US, Vietnam strike partnership in face of looming threat from China | DW News

- Vietnam and the United States have upgraded their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership. US President Joe Biden traveled to Vietnam for the occasion as he sought to move beyond the 'bitter past' of the Vietnam War. The focus of the visit is to expand avenues of cooperation in trade and technology, and also to boost Vietnam's capacity to fight regional and transnational crime. But there’s also the looming threat from China in the region that formed the backdrop of the visit. Vietnam has territorial disputes with China and the US is a big power rival to Beijing. President Biden clarified where the US stood on that.

As a Greek I have immense respect for the Vietnamese people. Just like us they've spent their entire history fighting to stay independent from large empires and now wants nothing more than to live in peace.
Well, to be fair, for 1000 years of its history Greece WAS the largest regional empire (Byzantine). But if you look at the last 500 years or so, then you are correct.
@@flopoz2575 to be fair though Byzantium was the result of greek culture absorbing the Eastern Roman empire which originally conquered Greece for millennia. It's common for culturally influential regions to absorb their conquerors it happened in Britain and France and the Vikings that settles in mainland Europe
@@cravingtuna1561 True. Still, it was called "the Greek Empire" in western Europe for a reason. Greek language and culture were dominant, even if its political origin was Roman. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard that the word "Roman" actually means "Greek" in Greece to this day? In any case, most nations have periods of prosperity and expansionism, as well as subjegation and fighting for independence in their history, so there is nothing strange about that.
@@flopoz2575 Well that until the Balkan Happen. Especially when Serbia and Bulgaria started it would be best if they start their own empire while also attacking the other in same area.
To be fair with you the Balkan is more of a mess than us south East Asian conflict with each other.

Liberal democracies aren't just about elections.
It is about clashing ways of life. China accepts only absolute control it is directly contradictory to our way of doing things and it goes both ways. I dunno if you noticed but up till now the US has been only too happy to look the other way for profit, they would continue to do so if they had any other choice. Doing so this long has actually enabled this outcome. You can't pretend these guys do not want to expand their borders as they build up militarily more than Germany did before WW2.

The United States had been very helpful to China in nurturing its economy and training hundreds of thousands of Chinese students in the Science and Technology fields since 1971 at the time when China was experiencing hard time feeding its own people. And look at China now, it has become the world's second largest economy. For chip manufacturing, a high level of discipline is the key, and most Americans today don't possess it.
They call it “forced labour"
Taiwanese media reported on August 2 that TSMC claimed the production holdup at its Arizona facility was caused by a shortage of trained American labour and that they had sent staff from Taiwan to assist with the factory's development. Labour union officials in Arizona, on the other hand, criticised TSMC for exploiting this as a justification to bring in "low-wage foreign labour."
Possible for Vietnam working on chip.
For last 15+ years those factory worker are train by the Chinese.
The working atmosphere are different from U$A.
And can be “forced labour"
American and European workers are lazy when compared with workers from Asia, very different work ethics.
“Threat from China” 😂 is this just becoming a tradition on every news that is reported? Where’s the threat? Why isn’t “threat” mentioned but exists on headlines. Why not “American threat” 😂😂😂
China also use Vietnam to export Chinese goods
@@C-lp6jbVietnam for China as Mexico for America.
America also invaded Mexico but that doesn't mean Mexican hate America.
The Culture and history connected two countries
@@jackytang3683 Completely different contexts. Vietnamese people aren’t ignorant and hate all Chinese people, but it’s more so that the government is seen as a threat and highly disliked. The thousands of years of history between Vietnam and China outnumber and leaves a bigger impact than America to Mexico.
@@C-lp6jb there's no way you can shut that. even now when you 're building factories in vietnam, all the parts are still originated from China.
At the end Vietnamese will have work. Everything will be started from beginning so was China back then@@leezhieng
Apart from economic and trade cooperation, Vietnam will not have any military contact with the United States.
I never realised the Biden is so tall.😊
are you saying Vietnamese is short? lol
Vietnam is all good, but that microphone better changed for a Chinese one.

China is an equal competitor in the international trade and economy. Basic rules of business and Capitalism in general. As for the disputes in Asia, i think all sides should stick to agreement
"China is an equal competitor"
You mean you think China should obey by the UNCLOS agreement it signed? Good luck with that!!!
NSA DW Indians ask America to ship more Agent orange to destroy China, Deutche Welle used Curry English
The USA is interested in Vietnam and India for containing China. That is the only reason for this partnership for the US.
Vietnam has comparatively cheap labour and a great geographical position.
That’s a valid reason, isn’t it?!
@@Ka-hs4yc Valid for US only.
@@gaustsgreat geopolitical location to contain China. Yes
@@gaustsnope . Vietnam is under china control
Biden should have done what Willy Brandt did in Warsaw. He should have been photographed on his knees at the memorial to those killed in the American War against Vietnam as a sign of contrition for US war crimes!
this actually really good news for china ,since china also move some industry to vietnam because cheaper labour there , remember china is largest vietnam trade partner . china benefit lot from this , they more easy export product to usa from vietnam
I trade with US I got USD, I trade with China I get toilet paper/RMB Chinese yuan. You chose
U trade with china u get money
U trade with usa u get bombs
Hmmm usd is under loan from china btw since china created it
Great to Vietnan 👏🏻
I hope US don’t push Vietnam to war with China like Ukraine war😂

Don't worry. This will not happen.
THE REAL QUESTION IS WHY THEY CAN'T SEES ANYONE ELSE DEVELOPING OR GETTING RICHER OR BECOMING ADVANCE FOR THEIR PEOPLE???
Well for China elites, they fear that the common people getting more wealth will undermine their rule.
They're not trying to contain China, they're just trying to contain China.:D
As if the USA can contain China… Anyway, for those thst don’t know, Vietnam is cooperating with China in trafing…so you may buy an item “Made In Vietnam” but it actually is “Made in China” 😂😂😂😂
Your so clever!!🤪🤪 Not!!!🤓🤓
It's funny if Chinese companies think this matters so much they pay Vietnam to relabel it. But no one actually cares about that. They only care sometimes if it's made domestically.

And the late senator McCain
is there 2 I can feel.
What would Ho Chi Minh think of this? :) how time changes the perspectives of people, once enemies now strategic partners.
I think he would be glad as Vietnam has bitter past against China since ancient times than US with just few decades
Probably okay with it. He was quite fond of America in certain ways, he spemt time living there, and identified strongly with the African American struggle. He also tried REALLY hard to get Americas support in the war of independence against France. That soured relations when America obviously didnt intervene.
If you study history, you would know that changing alliances has always been the order of the day among nations.
funny you mentioned, at this occasion, they reminded the time when Ho Chi Minh reached the US for help at the end of France colonial era in Vietnam, but the US former president ignored. History had all opportunities to change between the two countries.
Same as Eisenhower, JFK, Johnson, haha
America should have never went to war with Vietnam, very glad to see the two countries becoming closer
Vietnam should not be carried away and they should also know who help them when these pretenders slaughter Vietnamese.. China was there for them they should ever forget..
Then China invaded Vietnam in 1979 😂
We know, we still being neutral to all countries because we understand both China and the US are the biggest jerks anyways. None of them will be “true friends” for Vietnam.
Finally!
