it probably would... and the pitcher would win since the batter has to be set in the box within a set time but i dont think it says that the pitcher has to be set before that time. As long as he can switch his glove and get his motion started in time I think he'd be golden
I think it can be done, Venditte switches before every at-bat anyways and if a switch hitter does step up, personally I would force him to go to his weakest side (if he hits better righty then force him lefty vice versa).
I don't think it was a weakness. Switching hands allows you to pitch at a specific angle. But the batter also knew how to bat both right and left hand.
Unfortunately the rule only insists that one person has to indentify their side but the other is still allowed to switch to make it harder but BOTH should have to indicate at the same time
People may say it's unfair on the pitcher as it's such a rare gift but a batter will usually have a poorer side so the pitcher can still pick the side to induce the hitter to hit from his weaker side. Think Lance Berkman, he was much worse batting righty
Ambidexterity is such a valuable gift, most people don't realize. It can be trained, but will only be completely natural to those whom brain is wired a certain way.
i personally don’t have it but i have a friend who does and he says it feels a bit awkward since he’s so aware of both hands and doesn’t have a non dominant one to directly support the dominant one, but he does say it helps with many most things like how skilled he is in so much stuff so i guess you win some and you lose some edit: it’s been a while since i’ve talked to him but that’s what i remember from a convo we had a bit before
It is possible to train it, I have done it with the shot put and in basketball but one side is always slower when reacting to a fall, for example, and I have never been able to change that and some doctor says to me that bad for my cordination.
it can also be forgotten, i used to be able to do it naturally and without issue. I got forced to pick a hand and stop switching while writing, so i can't do it anymore.
My wife studied early child development and has worked with many different children (including autistic children) at several different preschools, including a Montessori preschool. She says it is possible to teach a very young child to be ambidextrous, but at a certain point it is simply too late and becomes almost impossible. You have to start before they develop fine motor skills.
Again MLB has ruled in favor of the hitter. Switch hitters have been coming to the plate and choosing which side they want since forever and the one time a pitcher takes that away, MLB gives it right back to the hitter. You should celebrate a player with this talent not hold him back so the mediocre can compete! One way that hitter’s can combat this is do your homework and find out which side the pitcher is least effective and hit accordingly, but I guess using your head is against the rules. The league is run by the owners and the owners are a jealous lot!
@@poluticon because that would be fair. If they can force an ambidextrous pitcher to choose pitching hands, then a switch hitter should be forced to pick a side.
@@garthrogers2269 how many ambidextrous pitchers have there been in the history of MLB? Last I checked there have been 2 since the start of the 20th century. Now, how many switch hitters are there? I think it's safe to say this rule is fair.
@@poluticon The number of switch pitchers doesn't matter. Even if he was the only one ever, it's hardly fair to make one give up an advantage without making the other side do it as well.
So when he switches his glove at 14 seconds and starts his pitch and the batter just walks over the plate because he wants to switch too, what happens?
@@thatMexicanOTsnameisVirgil the game would fall apart completely if they kept switching with the pitcher clock on top of that the pitcher will always have the advantage. The rule is fine the way it is. You can change after every batter
There’s no rule against it. If he faces a switch hitter he can still use the numbers to see which side is better for him. He just can’t adjust to the hitter’s stance which I think is a fair compromise.
I literally had just thought about this last night watching the mariners lose to the Yankees and was like "can someone good at pitching with both hands switch mid pitch to throw the team off?"
ridiculous - if you can pick up the ball and throw with either hand in the field of play to your advantage, you should be able to do the same pitching. BAD rule change.
This is so cool to see. When I was young, my coach told me I had to pitch right handed only. Why I asked, because thats what baseball is all about, only left or only right, not both. Hahaha wish he was alive to see this.
@@DEADGrey-fm8js but switch hitting is different how ? Why shouldn't the batter have to choose 1 when approaching the plate ? First time he stepped into box he made his choice.
True, but as of 2023 it's no longer an issue. With the pitch clock, they can only flip back and forth for 20 seconds before the batter gets an automatic ball.
Exactly they should’ve given the pitcher the advantage since it’s so rare. Switch hitting is rare too and it sucks to give one the advantage in an off chance like this but I feel like they should make the batter commit to one side if they are gonna make a permanent rule because that decision takes away the pitchers advantage of switching easily for any other batter and teams already have to face lefty pitchers and the rest of the guys who arent able to switch hit or bat lefty are at a disadvantage all game. Plus if they just made it so the batter had to commit to the first side they chose they could still switch whenever they wanted for lefty pitchers. They overreacted to a very rare problem
Would be way more fun to have the batter be the one that chooses. Would be a real treat to watch a pitcher switch pitching hands in the middle of an at bat.
My father was forced by my very old school hardass grandpa to learn how to pitch with both hands from the time he was a child. He played for UPenn and an MLB farm team during the late 60's/early 70s. He eventually left to finish his degree at the school instead. But, imagine spending your entire life practicing a skill to have someone create a rule just to bring you down.
@@HowlingDoom but was he creating the issue or was the batter? I'd say it's kind of shared fault, but why can you have a switch hitter but not a switch pitcher?
Only an issue when facing a batter who is also ambidextrous. Apparently this issue rears it’s ugly head every 150 years or so. Hardly a problem or a rule to “bring down” said pitchers.
Just set a switch limit of 3 for both the pitcher and batter in a plate appearance Why limit the athletes other than to force a decision after say 3 switch attempts
For the sake of the fans enjoyment I say give the batter a better chance to put a ball in play. It’s already a very tedious game to watch unless your in the stands with a beer and a hotdog.
The only thing the picture knew was "free ride wheee". That's why he looks so butthurt when the batter switched on him. The batter went to bat KNOWING he was about to ruin this hack's CAREER. AND HE DID. And for that we applaud the BATTER. Fuck your pitcher.
Right, But the eule was set in place for a reason. The pitcher shouldn't be able to switch back and forth because he's a crybaby who just wants an advantage.
Even the best hitters only get on base less than 50% of the time so pitchers already have the advantage over a batter, why give them even more of an advantage?
@@unkledoda420 Only fair call is to force both batters and pitchers to let officials know ahead of the game which hand they'll be using. Cricket simply requires the bowler to tell the umpire before their first delivery, and before any subsequent change, which arm they will bowl with and from which side of the wicket. The batter is then free to respond as they wish, even switching hands when the ball has already been released.
I have never seen a bowler who can bowl with either arm. I don't think there's ever been one, at least not in 1st class cricket. Do you know of anyone? I'm genuinely curious.
@Armadillito I don't think whether you bowl left or right arm is mentioned in the rules. Yes, you must inform the umpire of your intention to bowl over/around the wicket, but I think it's just assumed that you will bowl only left or right-handed. There's likely never been anyone who can bowl both.
@Castle Anthrax, you have to let them know which arm you're bowling as well. Also, the side over/around switches when you switch hand, i.e., right armer's over is left armer's around. So you can actually tell the arm of the bowler by his side.
@Some guy 9999 I'm actually surprised that it's in the rules, and according to rule 21.1 1, "The umpire will ascertain whether the bowler intends to bowl right handed or left handed..." I wonder if this was actually put in the rules BECAUSE of someone who could bowl either, or if when the rules were written, they had the forethought to cover that situation if it ever arose.
All they would have to do is ask each one separately "bat left or right?" And "pitch left or right?" Then make them lock it in for that at-bat without the other knowing.
Kind of like "rock, paper, scissors" but with left/right. Make them both lock in an answer without the other knowing, then reveal your choice. That makes it fair for both every time.
Its kind of a shame Venditte has only ever been a fringe big leaguer because his skillset would be insane if he was extremely effective with each arm instead of just MLB replacement level. It's so unique and cool and I wish he had found more success doing it at an MLB level.
IMO there’s no way to become a MLB level switch pitcher. It requires you to develop both arms and throw in the same time every other pitcher is developing their one arm and throw. Making it nearly impossible to reach that level because having a one lefty and righty pitcher will be more effective than one guy who’s decent with both arms.
@@bradyhill2136 It is not so hard, Dennis Reyes, who spent a number of seasons with the Reds was originally a right hander pitcher when he was a kid, then he broke his pitching arm and had to learn to pitch lefty. After medics removed his cast he could pitch as effectively from each side. He just chose to be a lefty because good LHP are rarer than good RHP.
Perhaps he should have chosen one hand and worked on that, might have been more successful. Every pitch right handed is one less pitch perfecting his left handed pitching, and vice versa.
He is… just not against switch hitters. It’s actually dumb to overlook that without this rule switch hitters can’t switch hit against him. oh. no no my friend. the most interesting event was when the Rangers and Blue Jays had an all out brawl on the field in 2016. that whole game was filled with tension that led to the fighting.
And it actually happened in México with Venditte before it happened in the minors. That mexican league then created a rule in which once the batter choses then the pitcher decides, if the batter decides to change side then the pitcher could too, but only once in an at bat. Then MLB changed it to favor the batter.
Switch pitcher is way more difficult and impressive. The pitcher should have the advantage in a switch duel. Batter can only switch once. Pitcher can switch twice.
Took my sons to a kids/pro day where pros have a clinic on different positions. Pat was there giving advice to kids. When a lefty or a righty stepped up on the mound, he would switch his glove and coach them with the same arm. Very cool to see.

It can be trained, but will only be completely natural to those whom brain is wired a certain way.
i personally don’t have it but i have a friend who does and he says it feels a bit awkward since he’s so aware of both hands and doesn’t have a non dominant one to directly support the dominant one, but he does say it helps with many most things like how skilled he is in so much stuff so i guess you win some and you lose some
edit: it’s been a while since i’ve talked to him but that’s what i remember from a convo we had a bit before
It is possible to train it, I have done it with the shot put and in basketball but one side is always slower when reacting to a fall, for example, and I have never been able to change that and some doctor says to me that bad for my cordination.
it can also be forgotten, i used to be able to do it naturally and without issue. I got forced to pick a hand and stop switching while writing, so i can't do it anymore.
I’m not ambidextrous but I’m right handed but with certain things I’m left hand dominant and left foot dominant and this came with years of practice
My wife studied early child development and has worked with many different children (including autistic children) at several different preschools, including a Montessori preschool.

Cricket simply requires the bowler to tell the umpire before their first delivery, and before any subsequent change, which arm they will bowl with and from which side of the wicket. The batter is then free to respond as they wish, even switching hands when the ball has already been released.

@@castleanthrax1833 nope. I'm sure someone somewhere can do it, but I've not heard of it.
@Some guy 9999 I'm actually surprised that it's in the rules, and according to rule 21.1 1, "The umpire will ascertain whether the bowler intends to bowl right handed or left handed..."
