I bought a similar one on ebay for $9 (US) A little grey thing with an antenna. It claimed to be a 300mbps long range wireless N model. The signal was really poor and it wouldn't break 45mbps. didn't get hot, just didn't work. meanwhile my old trusty netger 3100 v2 from the early 2000's gave me a steady 117mbps so i still use that to this day. Nothing has beaten it yet. I can stick it out of my window and pick up useable signals from down the street.
the model i use is an old one, the exact model is WNDA3100(V2) N600, it claims up to 600mbps (300/300), but I've never encountered any internet that fast out in the wild thus far. Maybe some day I'll stumble upon a google fiber honeypot, but for now it gets the job done faster then any of the other crap i have. I have the original WNDA3100 (v1) as well, It had lots of issues with it's drivers. would just loose connection constantly for no reason. I tried using different drivers, different operating systems. Even reflowing the board in case it was a bad soldier, nothing worked. If you still have any of those i'd love to see what someone with your expertise and equipment could figure out.
May be the antenna in the plastic tube is rubbish. I wonder is a poor antenna and bad SWR is causing it to draw more current, stressing and heating the regulator. Regarding the antenna connectors, the manufacturer probably finds machine placed connectors cheaper than a hand soldered coax connection.

+HypnicJerk The netgear 3100 still have 1 or 2 in a box somewhere, I did not bother to check the claimed speed but I bet it falls far short.

Has to be the antenna.Mod it with a colinear and apply small heatsink.
You shouldn't use a bong prong for a pointer.
antenna maybe to short
Interesting, maybe a wrong value inductor?
+Tradie Trev Maybe Trev or could be a fake or just a substandard part that had been rejected.
I got a alfa clone that would not work 3 feet from router.
😁
my eifi is 617 signal strenth very very strong
