    I would be happy if the st louis chess club decided to abandon all the other teachers and turned their channel into the Ben Finegold show. This episode was pretty difficult I missed half of the jokes. Oh wait, the chess, yes that was excellent, but I understood even less of that! Those 15 year olds are dangerous because they can calculate like a machine, completely fearless and so aggressive.

    Looked at the second game with Stockfish. More or less all 0.00 until 37. Nb5. It's pretty amazing how such sharp positions can be completely equal - though of course it only takes one bad move to lose immediately, and Shirov was kind enough to demonstrate that for us :D

    At 20:31 after white plays Nc3, why doesn't black take what looks like a free pawn dxe7, opening up the d file for his queen in the process? Obviously I'm missing something, but I can't work out what it is, so any kind soul with a bit of understanding of the game open to sharing their thoughts would be appreciated!

    • @peterpap9604

      MsUncleKevin in that case black can play Nf5, attacking the white bishop and defending g7, and f5 is a great square for the knight

    Ben's lectures are always pure gold! His name is actually spelled "Feingold" in german, but they probably got it wrong when his ancestors arrived on Ellis Island. Well, it means "fine gold", so who cares?
    Anyways, I am the only one who got the nagging impression that Ben got the players wrong in the last game? It was actually Shirov, who made all the crazy queen moves with white. Btw, nice way to cover up this little detail by just talking like nothing has happened :)

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 3 роки тому

      Yes, the second game was Shirov-Sevian, not Sevian-Shirov. GM Finegold obviously got confused about this -- as you say, in the opening, he was describing Sevian as making the white queen moves but, towards the end, he seemed to know that Sevian was black and going to win.

  • @xExplizit

    how can you castle if a piece is attacking the square inbetween the rook and king?

    • @Radorf
      @Radorf 7 років тому +2

      The rule says that u cant castle if the king is in check or has to go to a square where he will be in check, but he never goes through b1 when castling (he goes through d1 and c1)

    • @xExplizit
      @xExplizit 7 років тому +1

      Ohh okay, so its only the king that cant be in danger, the rook doesn't matter. Thanks

      because the king didn't move through check , hence the move is legal

    • @JimLink

      Because Mike Kummer wasn't the arbiter.

    • @xsangrezulx
      @xsangrezulx 7 років тому +1

      You can castle when the piece that is being attacked is the rook (or the rook goes through a square that is attacked).
      But you cant castle when the piece being attacked is the King (you're in check), or when the King goes through a square being attacked (for example if there was a black bishop in a4 - attacking d1)

      When the position is opened and a lot of pieces potentially hanging. Tactical positions like those from for example sicilians or even king's gambits

    • @bonerici
      @bonerici 7 років тому +2

      sharp means it is like a knife. If you are not careful you will cut yourself. You must find the correct move and only that correct move. Dull positions are the opposite, it is pretty easy to make any move and you will be ok. Again this is in reference to a knife. Sharp knives can cut you!

    • @kevinbyrne4538
      @kevinbyrne4538 7 років тому +2

      Sharp = Risky, double-edged, highly tactical. Sharp can be used to describe moves, maneuvers, positions, and styles of play.
