      My primary reason is masochistically playing games online, losing, and hating myself. The truth hurts. Also losing hurts.

    Chessmetrics has Marshall at #4 in the world in January 1907, behind Maroczy, Schlechter, and Tarrasch. Lasker was at #9, even though he was the best player, just because Chessmetrics takes points off for inactivity, and Lasker hadn't played in a while.

      Remember, Em. Lasker took his PhD. in mathematics, AFTER he became World Chess Champion. The man was definitely multi-faceted. I think it's fair to say that Em. Lasker played both the board and the opponent.
      Fischer, impetuously, called Lasker a coffee house player. Later, he changed his tune. IMO, NY 1924 tells the tale. At a somewhat advanced age, Lasker won the tournament. The order of finish: Lasker 1, Capablanca 2, and Alekhine 3. A very tough field, indeed.

    Ben, Game 3, Lasker played Ne4 You didn't mention the trap Marshall had prepared. If Lasker had taken the c pawn Rxc3 then White plays (2) Qxc8! Rxc8 (3)Rxc8 ch Kh7 (4)Rh8 ch! Kxh8 (5)Nxf7 ch White wins.

  • @danielgautreau161
    @danielgautreau161 2 роки тому

    At 13:34 White can play QxN. Later he can give up his c-pawn with Rd1 & the d-pawn's threat to march is very strong, as the other Rook can manoever to the e-file to reach e5 or e6. I think Black will have to take the perpetual check.

    It's funny how when you're a late-beginner/early-intermediate chess player, if you spend too much time on theory the first person who plays wild and crazy might end up completely crushing you. Not if they don't know anything about chess, like if they don't know about discovered attacks and pins then you'll win. But if they're a competent chess player who improvises, it's very jarring and then you have to be creative on the spot.

    At 16:00, White could play Rb5 followed by d5 to stop Rh5#. The problem is Rb5 Rxb5 d5 Rb2! with unstoppable Qg2/h2#. Ben should have mentioned this variation, but he's the coolest so I forgive him.

    Here's my hypothesis. Marshall is down 3.5 to 9.5 and has lost two games in a row. He's demoralized and maybe hit the Scotch a little hard the night before, or even the morning of.
