- 20 dollar Stainless Steel Wood Gas Stove Field Use Review. This stove is available in Ebay for less than 20 dollars shipped if you shop around. It looks like a copy of the Silver Fire stove. Works great and is 14 oz, I foraged a meal off the land for this test.

To properly load the stove, choose sticks about the diameter of your thumb (.5 inch) and break them into lengths the width of your palm (4 inch). Stack the fuel in the stove vertically. The inner holes at the top need to be visible so the wood gas can enter the burn chamber. Always light it from the top.

Yes @ Jas Holden... Well I hope you will not take offence MegaWoodswalker: - I do feel that it very much looked like an overstuffed wood stove, and will always be a pain in the butt; this just proved it watching it..lol
However if one splits the twigs with a knife, and snap them shorter to make them smaller; you will have less fuss and it will be more like the wood pellets.

I bought one of these stoves last year and love how well it works. It's very efficient and I don't run out of fuel. It works well even with dried grass. The only thing about grass is to make clumps by twisting it together. If you don't do the twists you'll be feeding the fire every few seconds with not much time to cook. Great video!
Very impressive with the wood pellets . 30 + mins for 12-14 Oz . Quick light and up to full burn very cleanly . Good test to show us the difference .

I did a review on that wood gas stove a while back, its a great stove, works very very well. The little thing on the bottom can be used to hold an alcohol stove inside or to keep your ashes from burning the ground under your stove. Never thought to use wood pellets, but it looks like they work great too.

Thanks, so much, Kevin. My hubby surprised me with one of these stoves today and I came here to figure out how to use. :D
I have one made by LIXADA, I sometimes work in rural and remote areas so always keep it handy in the vehicle. I burn small pieces of foraged wood, if I can't do this I keep a bag of wood pellets ready to burn, you can also invert the ash pan to fit a alcohol burner in it too.
You need the full flames to boil water quickly, after they die down to embers it continues to burn with an invisible blue flame on reduced heat that is still ok for general cooking. Load it up fully, and burn from the top down gives you about 30mins of water boil time. Then it keeps the embers going for about another hour. Add more wood if you need the higher heat. 2hrs of cooking will reduce the wood down to a pile of ash that is smaller than the palm of your hand. Unbelievably efficient and genuinely smokeless once it gets going.

I have the same stove & left a comment about a month ago, since then been using it more often so to update...
yes I use wood pellets as they are much easier, load it up then light it from the top and it burns between a half hr to a full hr depending.
When using wood as fuel if you break up the wood small it will load similar to the pellets and will start up almost as quick.
Having long sticks is a pain as you have to wait for them to burn down before using the stove.
You can also put a trangia alcohol burner inside it by inverting the ash pan.
For a quick brew use the trangia in side it,
For a lunch break use the wood pellets.
For a longer stay camp use local wood you find on site.

Wood material has to be below the primary air vents or else it'll smoke considerably. I don't think it was too much birch bark. Just too long of sticks.

Good video, brother! These really are amazing little stoves. I picked one up on fleabay for $12.97 shipped! It's great to be able to just pick up your fuel right around your camp instead of packing canisters of butane or bottles of alcohol in with you. Some have complained that it's difficult to sit their USGI canteen cup atop these and I found a solution to share. I picked up a $6 stainless steel Peerless shower drain strainer at Wally World and just removed the outer rubber gasket. Once you get her burning, just place the piece on top of your 3 little prongs on the stove and you have a great flat platform with holes to sit your cup on. I imagine you could even use it as a grill top if you wanted. I suppose, for the sake of the less-than-intelligent folks out there, I should point out to remove the piece with a stick or while wearing heat proof gloves when you're finished. It cools down as quickly as the stove does too. Great piece of kit.

Ive had one for about a year and done a lot of camping using it in all weathers and its not put a foot wrong for me. The only thing cheaper would be a bean tin.

Looks good. Quick cooking tip. The way you had your fish prepared, just stuff the onion grass in the cavity of the fish. More flavor as it cooks and it won't turn black in the bottom of toy pan. Good video.

Love the stove. Built one very much like it for about $6.00. But there was one concern. Before starting the fire, even in a shove like this, clear burn able material away from the area, maybe about 4 ft. No forest fires should be started while producing these videos.
There were no forest fires started when making this video. It was a rainy wet day. Wet leaves don’t burn. In fact they totally suck as tinder. That said fire safety is a good topic and more so given the horrible events in California. Thanks for watching.
Good video. I have one of the silver scout knock off too. I use wild sticks to make charcoal to help purify water then after 200 gallons I will set it in my plants or us it to bbq. Best for trout is set your sinker about 6 inches from your hook. Use worm blower so bait will float. Cast near shore. Works wonders. Raw bacon for crayfish

Years ago I bought this prototype. It came from England with a nice sticker and a pack of skittles with British lingo. Kind of cool, but weird that they sent skittles. But this stove is called the Wild Stove. I believe it’s the original. A few years later I stumbled across the same prototype but only a slight change in the pot stand design and it was called The Scout. Not long after, the solo stove came out. I love the solo stove and now the wild stove (aka, your gasifier here) has joined my museum of collected stoves :) My guess is the little bowl is to collect ash and coals that might slip through the grate. It probably helps reflect heat too. Can’t beat the price! Hey, love your channel. Thanks. (I may have commented on this vid in the past. If so, sorry).
You want to keep the wood below the top set of internal holes to get the full gasification out of it

You are so correct.
It amazes me that they either don't supply instructions for these stoves or
most Utube posters can't read.
Many overfill the stove and the others light the fire in the bottom and then
have to add wood all the time as it gasifies too fast
This is s TLUD = Top Lit Up Draft stove
the fire burns longer and more efficiently if wood is packed in and lit from
the top like it is designed to be used. The fire then only heats and gasifies
the wood near it and heats the sides of the internal metal cylinder causing the
vents to let out warmed air to ignite the rising wood gas. This gives an even
and controlled burning process.
If bottom lit, the fire heats ALL the wood rapidly gasifying
it giving off more gas than the air vents can cope with.
This results in lost/unburnt wood gas = lost potential heat
= short lived fire = very inefficient fuel use

Yeh, it won’t gasify if the wood is above the inside holes. The way he stokes the wood stove is killing any true gas burn zone at the top.

Walker you are the only review I've seen that has done it rite.These are stoves that burn from the top down an not the bottom up as tradition states.Once it gamified, life is golden with little or no smoke film.Nice review pilgrim
Never listen to a reviewer that has a sparkling clean stove. I can tell yours has been used a little. Thanks for the honest opinions. I have had one of these el-cheap-o china knock offs for about a year and it works fine. Biggest gripe is it taking a few minutes to get going. But fuel is abundant.

I bought one but the wood I used was a bit damp, typical winter conditions. I put a Trangia alcohol burner in it with methylated spirits and it worked great. You can start cooking straight away and metho is cheap, as is the Trangia burner approx $25

and theres no reason not to break found wood into smaller pieces. gasification occurs in the smoke, so needs more room at the top. then you can also burn top down resulting in a more efficient burn actually using gasification from the beginning.

did you know that the stove that you have there nests perfectly in the MSR stowaway/seagull potthe 775 ml pot they come in a few different sizes you need to 775 ml pot for the stove to nest into it

16.99 amazon ( free shipping with prime), Odor of wood fire from twigs, sticks to the bottom of the pan/cup/pot. Pellets seem to have less soot and odor on the bottoms of the cooking utensils. Mine works just like seen on the video. cheaper than any pocket gas stove and free all you can pick up fuel (twigs) at my house.

Even if the sticks burn longer the pellets were usable way faster. The pellets are dry, weigh very little and for a day hike would save you the time of looking for and picking up breaking down the twigs.

The extra tray/bowl is to catch the burning embers before falling on the ground. I don't have the Lixada version but I have the identical stove to your original. I used a spare aluminum lid as my ember/ash tray. One thing I found was that in a stiff wind the flame would actually downdraft and come out of the bottom.

That little 'bowl' will hold liquid fuel, or hexamine tablets...I've got the same stove, if you just want enough heat ( burning time ) to boil up some water for a cup of tea or coffee ( or some soup ) its ideal.

True, but this thing has its own qualities and some outrun any gas stove. Mostly because the fuel is either dead cheap or free, at home and on the road.
But I myself also enjoy the benefits of a clean, fast and consistent gas stove.

I got mine ( in the UK ) for the princely sum of.... £10.99 / $13.39. Having seen similar stoves for much more I was 'slightly' dubious...but figured it was worth the risk of buying one...and I'm amazed at how good it is. I've tried many different types of stove over the last 45 years ( gulp...yeah...that old )...and I can honestly say this is one of the best ( if not THE best ) stoves I've ever used. More so when you don't 'have' to carry fuel with you.
the wonderful thing about these stoves is that it's still burning blue flames that you can't see during the day light after the red flame goes out so it will stay hot for awhile even after the red goes out.

the little tray is for alchol turn burn insert ove fill tray and light.also works great to catch ash mix ash with your soap and scrub unit works great for stove clean up. (Lye in ash boost cleaning of soot peels it right off

havent read comments, and don't want to. sure some might bash or maybe not. here is my take, going on a motorcycle trip. I have a really cool small stove with the small gas tank. Have used several times and love it. I am going to get this stove only for a small :fire pit.....small and efficient and will fit on the bike with the gas stove for cooking. Maybe others have written the same, but this little metal jar might also be for catching sparks or small, glowing pieces of wood, from the stove in dry, fire risky, environments? Just place it under the grill/ burn chamber, so to say, if some stones, rubble or such cannot be found to place the stove on? Just a thought, maybe not so, but?
I've also purchased two of these Chinese knock-offs. They're great, aren't they?! Since they are patterned after the Silver fire, they fit perfectly inside a 775 ml MSR Stowaway pot. By the way, I like your enthusiasm on this video!

Sharil Sharudin I just use the stuff sack the stove came with. The MSR Titian Ti kettle is fantastic but not sure this stove would fit inside. I never tried as it does not look like it would. Here is a link to the kettle which is far more expensive than the stove.

great stove. I find that you have around 15-20 minutes of cook time before the ashes clog the vents. have cooked sausages and pancakes enough to feed 4 adults (scout dads), on many an occasion.

I found vents clog fast, then have to dump it to have another proper burn. I think pellets clog faster as they turn to a finer ash then wood chunks as charcoal.

Those white fumes are flammable, they contains flammable gases like carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and others. The second stove did not burned clean because it was overfilled and the woods were wet.

The cup thing is an ash plate that you place underneath your wood chamber. Alternatively you can put the wood chamber into the stove upside down, put the plate on top of it and fill it with spirits to use it as an alcohol stove...
What did you use to start the wood pellets? Do you think some fuzz zticks made from fatwood around an 1" long litten and dropped on the pellets would work? Super helpful video!
If you find the bags of woid pellets expensive, you could try certain types of cat litter....they are also made from wood pellets

Here is a video I did on another topic but used the stove to boil Pine needle tea. I packed the stove in maple sticks with fuel mostly below the vent holes and it easily boiled the water. Here is the link. In this video I over stuffed it however once burned down did a great job. Home this helps bro.

Loved the video, but one issue I have is the way the sticks were loaded. Hard to compare burn times when the stick stove didn't even become usable for close to 30 minutes. You couldn't put a pan on it. I did like how long the pellets burned. Great for a 1 or 2 person day trip. Hard to bring enough pellets for several meals though. Nice part is you can get 1 easy burn from it then switch over to natural wood. I'm still batting the idea of buying one around. I'm the camp cook so I'm usually cooking for a group and we almost always have a camp fire. might be a handy thing to toss into the truck bag or take out on the canoe when fishing. Gutted the trout. I forgot if what type of oil or if butter was used. I mostly use corn oil as it's easier to pack but the weather was cold and occasionally take butter. Just forgot what I used that day. Thanks for watching.
I drilled out the square holes on the base of the inner cup to round increasing the air flow to max and it burnt much hotter and cleaner .
So apart from your totally daft way of loading the "sticks" one (you have no idea at all how fires burn). The 20 dollar stove works as well as the more expensive one. We can assume? Assume as apart from burning sticks in it, you did nothing else with it!!!!

That collapsible/telescoping fishing pole was cool! Can I find it by searching shakespere collapsible fishing pole? I am not a big fisherman but, to have one of those seams to me to be a fantastic survival fishing pole & very discrete!!!

Not a good idea to have a como phone protector/cover...what the hell happens if you drop the damn thing in the woods ? Could take hours to find it. A nice bright yellow or red,for example, would do the trick. Unless you have a back up phone...Good vid and subbed.

Cool video and great catch. The stove that you were putting the wood scraps in, you over did it a little. You might as well of just made a camp fire the way you kept it so full of wood extending out the top. I think you are supposed to just fill the burn chamber and it will burn just like the pellets you put in. You will get the hang of it eventually. Thanks for the video. Cheers

I would certainly go with the wood pellets
The length of burn and ease of lighting from above makes the pellets a winner. I hoped and expected that available fuels would be superior for no good reason. The amount of pellets required was surprisingly small and very practical as part of your everyday gear in all your vehicles.
I see others saying what I've said about packing the burn chamber and keeping the burn below the holes around the rim. But it might go better if you light a small fire, protected by the walls of the chamber. To start with, it'd be an updraft, with good venting from underneath, but once it heats up and you start getting the downdraft going, I think you could use bigger chunks of wood that will gasify just fine. This would eliminate the one awkwardness of the design.
I say this because this is how you operate the bigger Solo Bonfire, which is 19 or 20 inches in diameter. Once you get the downdraft gasification going, with a small blaze, you throw as big of chunks in as you can fit, without much regard. This method would eliminate most of the smoke and fuss associated with getting a fire lit on top of a packed burn chamber, when you have a perfectly ventilated up-draft kick-start chamber shielded from the wind already there. I'd experiment with how big I could make the chunks, but I suspect that anything you can fit in that chamber once it's going, will burn clean, and the bigger the chunk, the longer the burn.
By their design, the bottom of the chamber will be oxygen-deprived and the burn will migrate to the top of the chamber. The heated and oxygen-injected wood gas being drawn from the bottom of the chamber and up the sides to ignite at the top, is being supplied much of its oxygen from above, and robbing the incoming air of its oxygen. So even though you started the fire at the bottom, when you stack fuel on top of it, it ends up most of the burning is above, and at the bottom, the fuel will switch from combustion to pyrolysis due to oxygen depletion.
You can really see this in the larger Bonfire, as the wood is definitely smoking when you throw the first big chunks in on top of your starter fire, but the smoke goes DOWN instead of up, then travels up the sides.By the time it emerges from the jets at the top, it's ready to burn, and MORE oxygen is supplied from above. You're going to get pyrolysis at the bottom of the burn chamber, regardless.
I'm not sure that'd beat what I've seen some Brits doing by packing the chamber, first and lighting it at the top. That's fine if you're in hardwood. In Western U.S., you're not going to get that. But once it starts to gasify, the entire burn chamber is oxygen-deprived. Most of the 02 it's getting is coming from above and it's being depleted because of the burning at the top. These units work because they breathe really good to get your fire STARTED, but once the fire is going, the design RESTRICTS the oxygen and overall airflow, so it doesn't escape before you've had a chance to burn it. Those vent holes at the bottom are great for getting an initial updraft fire started, but once it's beyond a critical threshold of heat and size of fire, it's damping that fire.

I am very much interested in knowing how it performed using denatured alcohol? And did you use the included bowl or did you try it with a Trangia alcohol burner instead? The little inner bowl for solid fuel tabs.
mine should be here today. along with the MSR alpine pot (750 something ML). The stove supposedly stows away perectly inside. I'm planning an upside down fire variant in which all the thick vertical facing wood will not extend past the gas holes. and it will be covered by smaller horizontal laying kindling stacked over the top rim for abundant fast falling coals. While not as automatic as pellets it should come close and require less attention.

I have one if those. it's ik, but would be better if there was a way tonkeeo,feeding it while cooking without removing pan or pot cooking stuff in.
also, I found that as you keep adding more fuel to still burnong full it hauls the cook temp diwn, u got to remove fry pan until it begins gassifying again. be nice if there was a slow self feed I like the square bix better as i can feed that
without removing pot or pan. also it diesnt get air clogged like that one u have there does. then u have to dump all the coal out to restart

Wood pellets are like under 10 dollars here in Canada for a 40 pound bag . So u get burn for your buck , or bang for your buck . Lol Over a hour burn time life is good . No fire pit needed.. Have heat right beside you .Portable and Light . Throw in your pie iron to and possibilities are end less .

To keep the gasification working you have to keep the fuel level below the top ring of holes , way too much wood in the non-pellet stove
Beautiful video but I felt sorry for the fish; I wish you would have put it out of it's misery quickly rather than let it gasp on the shore. I know, I'm crazy. My Dad won't take me fishing any more because I feel too sorry for the fish and let them go :-). Thanks for the review; I'm thinking of getting one of these stoves for bikepacking.
