So interesting. And succinct. Chipmunks are present, constantly scurrying across our patio and backyard, yet I never bothered to find out much about them.
One (unusually) has been chucking (I now know) atop a discarded board leaning on our bbq - for hours, all morning! Surely the aerial predator is long gone…

10/11/22.......just today I learned my neighbors hate these adorable creatures. I seldom see them,..maybe once I saw one in my wooded backyard. My neighbor's hate them,....and they tell me chipmunks are destructive to their yards, and that they undermine patio stepping stones, they burrow under concrete garden ponds, and even damage in-ground swimming pools. I have never heard of so much rubbish. My neighbors were very unkind to me, when they found out I didn't share their hatred of this tiny creature. I love them and would never want to hurt them. I have never seen them damage anything in my yard.

If you love them so much, why dont you pay the repair bill once. You will hate them then

@@coreybartlett9902 Lots of animals have damaged my house,...from my pets who clawed the woodwork, & peed on the hardwood floors, to raccoons & squirrels, who have gotten into my attic, damaged my shingles, & insulation. Yet, I don't hate them. Having children, you can imagine all the damage they do. From broken windows, furniture, valuable heirlooms, & cars. I don't hate them either. You just have to deal with it...(at least with chipmunks, gophers, & rabbits, that burrow, you can sometimes catch them & block them. (and in worse case scenarios, kill them.)

@@AlphaPoe I've been wishing for years that came into my yard. I have a yard I think they'd love. Lots of shade trees, piles of old tree limbs. Plants to nibble on,....I guess my trees are Sugar Maples, and they don't drop acorns, or much in the way of seeds. I have Red Bud trees and they have seed pods. There are no predators in my yard. No local dogs visit. It is relatively quiet. New to our area are random deer visits,......I saw my first and only skunk visit,...a couple of years ago. There are Opossum,... & squirrels. I'm thankful You Tube has tons of videos of humans enjoying their encounters with them.

👍 People probably hear chumpmonks a lot, and just assume its a bird chirping; but once you know their sounds; you can distiguish between.

I don't recall where I read it, but you're right - they don't actually hibernate per se. They sleep a lot! In winter for weeks at a time (torpor?) but wake up at times, to hit that larder they keep for a "midnight snack." Even in summer they sleep 18 - 20 hrs most days. It's very important that they stock that larder to the brim and some obviously make that task #1. (that's why they have those pouches). If they underestimate, and the larder gets empty they will briefly lam out in winter to find something to eat. It's very dangerous. They are conspicuous in snow and there are hawks owls and eagles just waiting for them to show up.

I feed at least 3 chipmunks at work. They do take peanuts from my hand. They sometimes chirp at me of I ignore them.
I call them all "Chippy" When I was asked why, I said, "They are like cats and don't answer to names"

Chipmunks are soo cute. I would never hurt one, but the thing is they are destructive to our property. Any suggestions on how to deal with them without harming them?

Chipmunks did not get their name from the chipping sounds they make. That's a common myth. In actuality, the species name "chipmunk" came about from the English corruption of "Chitimon" the Native American name for chippies.

Oh.. Let's not mention how incredibly destructive they can be. Let's just pass them off as cute and cuddly little fur balls...🙄
Yeah they may be cute.. But keep things in perspective folks.. THEY ARE RODENTS!!!
Would you let rats run wildly in and around your home???
