    Watch the scene again when he gets to Allegra lane. He remembers while he is drinking the water - music changes, facial expression changes, he makes the cognizant decision to let alone. He found her and was ok with it. He was done. This was so subtle and only able to be successfully done because of Ali's extraordinary acting ability. They didn't need to heavy hand it.

      I don't think that's what they were going for. TV shows are never that subtle. His forgetfulness was handled exactly the same way as when he really forgets. There was no cheeky nod to the audience, so to speak. And he wouldn't have given the address to his son.

    Unlike the previous seasons which are about darkness and evil, this particular season is about loss, tragedy, and the crime isn't really grounded in something sinister. I liked it a lot.

    • @JackHandysideMusicUK

      Jarrett Mazza I caught this too. There’s something really interesting to be said about bureaucracy being mistaken for conspiracy too. The woman interviewing Wayne for the TV show creates all these half baked theories as to why the case wasn’t solved and how it may have been similar to Rust and Marty’s case. But the reality is far more tame than the dark conclusion everyone was expecting

    • @JarrettMazza
      @JarrettMazza 5 років тому +72

      @@JackHandysideMusicUK It was a great decision for this season, and the direction that it took was very surprising. I think Pizzolato's intentions were basically, everyone hated Season 2, everyone loved Season 1, and maybe I can use this, pretend like the conspiracy is similar, that will get everyone super-interested, which it did, and then take it in a very different direction, which it did as well. I also think it is a nice critique of the idea of family, and how losing family, in whatever way, can be monumentally damaging, as literally every character suffered from this throughout the series. I think Hoyt really emphasized this point, because, at the end of episode 7, you're expecting a dark man to emerge from the shadowy car, and instead, you're given a look at a grieving man who was clearly uninvolved from the get go, but is in immense pain. You also think that the parents of Lucy and Will are "bad", but they aren't either, neither is Harris James, or for that matter, Junius and Isabell. What Isabell did was wrong, and what Junius did was wrong, but they weren't "sick" or "deranged", just people who lost something and were doing whatever they could to get it back, much like Wayne in the jungle, the last scene which brings the show to a wonderful close.

    • @ProtoScott26554
      @ProtoScott26554 5 років тому +171

      @@RumbleFish69 I gotta disagree with that opinion. Ambiguity is what breads discussion and let's audience members extrapolate their own meaning from a show, which can be more fulfilling than just having an answer given to you. Theorizing, and looking for the deeper meaning is something that can make a show greater, and more enjoyable. Similarly to how Wayne and Amelia discuss the poem about time and what it means early in the season. They both have ideas about the poem, but neither is really right or wrong. That kind of room for interpretation allows the audience to pull their own meaning from an art form. Authorial intent can often be shallow and unsatisfying in comparison.

    I think he did remember her and why he was there as he sipped the water. Remember when he told his son that there's no point in telling his wife( son's wife) that he was cheating on her as that would only be a relief for him from his guilt but a burden to her.
    If he told Julie that he knew her, it would have been for his own sake, feeling of accomplishment, relief but she would be left paranoid that she had may be found and would have to move her family again. Also, there was a change in music as happens when he remembers and his eyes shifted and he gave her a weird look as he drank his water.
    She also seemed to recognize him, perhaps intuitively like when you see someone you recognize but can't pin from exactly where or when.
    All in all, great great performance from Mahershala. Super impressed!

      Not a good season in my opinion. Not a shocking end either. What would have been really good is if we found out that Tom actually did kill himself! Sure, it's implied that Harris found him in the pink room, but during Harris's death beating, they should have had him reveal that he let Tom go after he beat him up and that he later killed himself. That was the problem with this show, everything was predictable. I thought the end would be Wayne finding out that his wife was involved in order to create a story for her book. She had a "messed up" period in her life and she never seemed quite normal. It should have been revealed that his son also solved this and Roland also had suspicions so he moved into seclusion years earlier. There were so many ways they could have gone. And why introduce the idea of a pedophile ring and introduce Rust and Marty if they weren't going to make an appearance?

    I like to think that at the moment when Wayne remembers the night he reconciled with Amelia, that his dementia was taking full form. The maid for the Hoyt estate mentioned later in the season that the basement was pretty much off limits and quarantined from the rest of the house (I.e. around the time Julie arrived). So it’s likely that Junius didn’t interact much with the outside world. Besides, the case was shut down shortly after it began and Wayne was transferred to a totally different unit in the 1980 timeline. And by the time they could’ve found Junius in the 1990 timeline, the case was shut down yet again and Wayne’s family was threatened.

And Watts waited outside Wayne's house several nights in a row, enough for Wayne to notice ONLY this time around?? . Ever since the Hoyt motorcade parked outside Wayne's house, Wayne would be checking for out of place things around his house. Do not forget that his demeanor is one of paranoid suspicion and fear for the lives of his wife and children. If the same strange car parked around Wayne's house for several days every year for 18 years, Wayne should have then noticed much earlier, run the plates or confront the driver, who was a ONE EYED BLACK MAN. In fact, if Watts had done that for 18 years, anyone else in the neighborhood would have spotted him and call the police.

    I thought about the ending for a long while, with Wayne waking into the jungle, and have my interpretation of it in which I'm very satisfied with. His final memory he has of his life was the one which he asked his love to marry him and it is nice because he spent so many years haunted with the mystery which not only consumed him but caused so much drama with his wife. He ceases to exsist as he knows it after we see this memory and his walking into the jungle is symbolic for him slipping fully into alzheimer's. I thought at first he might have died but then connected him alone in the vast jungle as his battle with his disease. I think this is a little foreshadowed with the daughters comment about already missing him. Wayne's son still has the location of Julie so ultimately he will become aware his father found what he was looking for. Wayne's story arch is complete at this point. Once this all settled with me I liked the finale just fine. Good season.

    The name Junius is far more ancient than 17th century England. The name "Junius" comes from the Roman family the Junii, who are remembered for their two most famous members. First, Lucius Junius Brutus, who in 509 BCE helped with the expulsion of the Roman King Tarquin, and who after helped establish the Roman Republic. The second famous member, and the one people are most familiar with today, would of course be Marcus Junius Brutus. As a member of a conspiracy of the senators who self-styled themselves the "Liberators" Marcus Junius Brutus participated in the successful assassination of Gaius Julius Caesar. The act alone achieved him immortality but Shakespeare certainly helped Brutus with his famous plays. Though he is best remembered as Brutus, for our purposes it we should remember his family name Junius.

      Rust final quote doesn't mean light is completely filling up the night sky, even Marty points that, the sky is still full of darkness, yet there's always light to stop it from taking over completely.
      Season 1 dealt with a decaying world, which is also the pessimistic vision Rust had from the beginning of the series, but in the end, he finds out there's always some good in the world to stop that decay, which is analogous to how him and Marty stopped the cult. It's not only a good ending for both of the characters, but it's also an extremely optimistic one for sure (Even relying on the audience looking at the bright spots in the ending), which really contrast with all the pessimistic ideas the season dealt throughout.

It just ends which is what it most audacious to us as viewers but it serves as a reflection on life ever ending the way we would like for it to. The first season even touched on this subject. True Detective is my favorite show, all seasons. However, I feel like we deserved more at least in terms of the thing that kicked it all off. "Just an accident" (and the thing itself) was pretty cliche and a big cop out. The all slow-motion depiction of what pretty anyone could have guessed would happen is what I mean. I'd have given anything to see one bad guy get blown away in the finale. While I thought it was good, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want more. The fans came up with the best endings for it, the whole anti-climactic Michael Rooker appearance was disappointing, less a few lines, and the fact that the primary bad guy was already dead was, well... a popcorn fart tbh. Nic P. could've done more with Harris James, and he at least could've helped us better understand Tom, and so forth. Heck, how many times did they drop the "Who's Julie's father?" thing, only to totally ignore it towards the end. I haven't rewatched it yet, but I'm guessing (?) Tom killed Dan O'Brian, although where he was found would contradict that. S3 had a bit different pace, which is fine, because the temporal aspects gave us a different type of story entirely; yet, the final episode felt hurried and rushed. Mixed emotions, I guess.

You spend all season analyzing these EPs and "who done it" theories, only for the conclusion to be a story no one watching could ever have guessed. I realize this could happen in real life, sure. But on TV, the thrill of these types of shows comes from the audience trying to figure out who took her...thinking that the evidence was always there. But it wasn't. And that was a disappointment. They pushed the red herring paedophile ring theory way too hard ...only for the story to turn out not having anything whatsoever to do with that theory. Hope this makes sense.

    Wayne NOT TAKING Roland with him to Allegra Lane (Julie and Mikes house) was the out-of-character, immersion killing, moment for me.
    There is no reason Wayne wouldn't have mentioned the theory to Roland as soon as he could. He had done so before out of fear of forgetting, demanded attention even.
    Roland would've cruised with him despite the seemingly out of the blue hunch his dead wife told him (Wayne had already told Roland he sees his dead wife so, he isn't in fear of being judged or what not).
    Absolutely killed the tone and immersion of the two, and the whole story.
    Two detectives totally intertwined became; "Nah man I'm going solo on this one despite my memory being that of a goldfish and I know this".
    Also, why would he write just the address? Couldnt afford the extra lead on the pencil to write "Julie lives at.."
    Bit of a shame. Like the writers went out of their way to do the Tony Soprano-Schroedinger "twist thing".

There had been plenty of other clues he had stumbled across up until that point that would've been way more justified to have him get too excited about the circumstances to forget recording, but there had been no indication of that earlier in the entire season and all of a sudden his character trait of being very careful and forward thinking about his bad memory is just completely dropped. Talk about having a show stumble at the finish line. They were doing SO well with this season up until this last episode!

      From a viewer's perspective the theory sounded like a longshot to begin with, the thoughts of an elderly man with a condition not able to pull himself out of the case and his imagination drumming up ideas yet at the same time wondering (the viewer) could this actually be what's happening, and it felt set up like this intentionally. I honestly didn't know which way it was going to go and that was quite a pleasant experience.
      All this to say is that 1. I agree with the comment above that acting impulsively and quickly on this revelation of possibly finally finding their girl is believable and 2. I immediately thought after seeing the conclusion of Wayne's theory with the points I made above (Wayne's mental condition, obsession to keep digging) that there is no way Roland would go for this. Seriously could you imagine Roland's face if Old Wayne was telling him all that?

    Hated the ending. Could have done so much more. They hinted at some sort of connection to season 1 when the woman interviewing Wayne referenced the events back then. That would have been awesome. They spent the entirety of season 3 building things up as some sort of big conspiracy, similar to season 1. Then they were like "lol nah jk." The idea they went with for the ending just did not have the payoff i was expecting.

    • @Nuke-China
      @Nuke-China 5 років тому +5

      The interview chick was basically a self-insert for the viewer. Trying to pry into the case and tie it back to some massive conspiracy, possibly link it to the events of the first season.
      I actually really liked the ending. The events were logical and fit into all the evidence presented. It was actually pretty realistic in the way that it didn't tie into some massive conspiracy like the first two seasons.

    • @SlothLoveChunk14
      @SlothLoveChunk14 5 років тому +5

      Until I did the math on the years, I guessed that the interview chick WAS Julie. The actress playing her is a big up and coming actress, it seemed a safe bet to assume she played a larger role in the show. But it seems the hiring of that actress was another red herring itself.

    • @DARKgirafa
      @DARKgirafa 5 років тому

      The conspiracy might still be there, but the Season 3 ending didn't require it in the least, nor could the two main characters realistically do anything about it by themselves. The threads are there, but it's up to someone else to carry on and do the work.

    PTSD from Vietnam. I took the final scene of him in Vietnam that he never left there mentally. I don’t think he died because the scene where the NVA stood over him at home is more of PTSD paranoia. He pushed hard to save the girl to fix what he did in Vietnam. A lot has been shown that has no real meaning to the story but it tells the story move vividly and there are a lot of questions that can be answered in different ways. But the truth reveals itself to be not as spectacular as the theories. The hole in the wall, the way the boy's body was left in the cave, the 911 phonecall from Julie to name a few. I liked the combo of West and Hays and their struggle with the case that binds them through eternity. In the end there are no mysteries just missed opportunities. And a lot of subtext to read into. It's not a tv dinner kind of show. I like the way it keeps lingering in my mind. Great season!

    10:38 personally I thought the reference to season 1 was genius. Like Cohle remarks in the final episode, “it’s all ONE STORY man: light vs dark”, True Detective at its essence is about the abuse that the powerful inflict on the powerless, especially those in positions of institutional privilege. The Hoyt family is allowed to simply get away with abducting an killing children just like the Tuttles were, and thus the comparison that Elisa draws between the two cases is apt. It doesn’t need to be a direct connection (eg. that the Hoyts were involved in the same pagan cult as the Tuttles), it just needs to be about the message

    I think this is actually a pretty dark ending. I see nothing to indicate that things are better other than being reunited with his family. In his last moments we see him regressing to another past memory with Amelia (albeit important) the show doesn’t end with them walking into the light together. We see Wayne deeper in the jungle, why assume he’s on his way out? As far as I can tell he’s completely lost, just like when he found Julie. The case was solved in a sense, but Wayne is never getting out of that jungle.

And I liked that they let One-eye behind rather than answer to everything with violence. But I also feel that ironically Hays' son taking the paper means that he will become burdened with what's in that address and becomes like his parents, obsessed with the case. The only thing that confused me was the jungle ending and this told me nothing about it.
