Great video! quick FYI for anyone seeing this in December 2022, PlayStation moved the 3D audio options from the main sound output menu to their own menu so you wont see them under the output to headphones area anymore like in 6:41 in the video. everything else still applies of course.

@@GearsAndTech i watched your troubleshooting guide before this video. I did what you did on your TV, but mine’s only has two options (bitstream and PCM) I set it to PCM and my PS5 also I set it to PCM, do you recommend me staying with those settings? I also have the arctis pro w gamedac.
On the ps5 set it to Dolby
On the tv bitstream may be the correct setting, but try both for a bit. One should sound better than the other
On the ps5 for sure have it set to Dolby though

Yes. I think a lot of people don't realize how much the tv screws with the sound when it can.
Trying to make it dumbed down for everyone generally makes it work but not the best

I’ve done this with my Xbox series x optical cable from tv to mixamp and I’ve also set it to pc mode instead of Xbox, with headset format set to Dolby atmos for headphones and the hdmi audio is set to Dolby digital and it sounds great 👍

I bought the lg c1 top of the line nr1 gaming tv 120hz 4k all made for gaking has it's own build in gaming channel & options by using a nvidea chip... just use optic it works just like straight into the ps5 no diffrent i tested it out on multiple games

unfortunately this method is not perfect. it introduces delay if you set your TV to game mode. The lag is around 200ms and is unbearable. Why did Sony have to get rid of the optical port to save few cents :( .
I think that's your tv introducing the delay.
No matter what setting I use on my tcl tv I never get a delay.
Game mode is much better for frame rates though

Great information , I was able to use this advice to get my sound blasterx G6 working perfectly on my Ps5 thanks to you. I had retired it since updating from my Ps4 due to no optical out from the PS5. Now im able to use mic monitoring which i really need due to my noise cancelling headphones. Subscribed

I actually used the splitter on my ps4 for a lot of years. Never even thought to check the tv for the optical cable.

My Samsung TV doesn't have output format RAW and doesn't have pass-through. The only format I can use is PCM, what can I do?
Same situation here. I’m starting to think pcm may be the best one because pcm is unprocessed audio which the mix amp would then process right?
@@breakyoseofsucka I think so. I use pcm for the output format, on the mixamp I use the astro presets because dolby digital sounds with echo.

I have a CX OLED and have Astro a50s. The adapter Astro suggested to use in order to use them slapped my tv down to 1080p at 120hz. I’ll just use the optical cable on the back of my tv. I didn’t pay over 2 grand not to use the HDMI 2.1 4K at 120hz lol

The "output audio to astro" setting makes perfectly sense because it's ONLY the chat audio. You don't want your chat audio to be surround sound. Basically the PS5 sends the surround sound via optical, and chat as normal stereo to the mixamp through usb.

Personally I would use the Dolby setting. But you can do it based on preference

PC is looking more tempting lately. The cost of all the modifying to make headphones work and the cost of good compatible TV’s and good compatible AV receiver etc makes it almost not even worth getting new gen consoles or maybe just go with a monitor instead which still won’t resolve al the headphone and up to date AV receiver issues.

Im using a monitor and only has an audio jack out, so using an audio cable to run from my Monitor to Astro A50 docking station and then follow your steps. That can be another way to bypass the HDMI adapter

So if let my TV handle the optical part can I still use my arc soundbar when I'm not using headphones or will this stop the signal? Single player games is soundbar and multi is headphones that's how I play... Basically I need 2 sound signals... Any insight on this?

Let me know if you've ever seen this. All of my settings have been correct and mixamp working beautifully. Now when I get on no sound. Output device auto switches to av amplifier from Mixamp Pro. When I change it back there's no sound. Still can get stereo if I set it to all audio instead of chat

I have the Sony XR 90J.. for the digital audio out setting on the TV it has 3 options, which one would I choose out of the 3?
1. Auto 1 (Output compressed audio without change)
2. Auto 2 (Output only compressed audio for multichannel content without change)
3. PCM (Always output in PCM)

My dude most TVs in the past like 1080p TVs even s 720p majority of them especially the 1080s before even 4K had optical line out you know optical cords have been out since the PlayStation 2 era and there was an optical port on the PlayStation 2
So I have the astroa50....the ones with the blue sliders and bigger base station. So basically I get rid of the base station and buy an astro a40mix amp and just follow these steps. And this is a one time thing and I dont have to mess with anything after that moving forward whether I'm using a headset or when my son plays and he doesn't use a headset when he plays. Your base station has the mixamp built in. So just hook that up the way the video says. Then it'll be good

Bad luck , my Samsung TV only has one hdmi 2,1 and that hdmi port don’t support raw , only the Earc hdmi port supports that but the hdmi Earc is just 2.0 … 😞

The problem is that the 3d audio is not available via HDMI. The only way to get the 3d audio with Astro A40 is to plug them into the controller with 3.5 mm jack.
It is available through usb as well. So you can pump it through the mixamp and get more volume.
I got new TV samsung tu8000 it supports 120 hz but dosent have hmdi 2.1 wonder if this would work ?

Dolby 5.1 is not the "full experience" anymore... 3D audio is...
Multichannel "surround sound" (dolby or otherwise) is a cinema technology being shoehorned in to video games... Games are 3D, they need 3D audio...
MAN, i can’t thank you enough! i was without my astros since launch (ps5 ) since i didn’t like using them without having dolby, i just got a new tv so i looked up set up videos again and i’m surprised i didn’t didn’t this video 8 months ago. This works great but for some reason whenever i finish a match online on COD, when i go back to the lobby after a match, my tv goes back to HDMI(ARC) and leaves Optical Out. i have to toggle Optical Out back on every time i finish a game it’s so weird (i have a LG C1)
try connecting your HDMI into a different HDMI port (non ARC). See if that helps.

Shouldnt the audio output device stay on hdmi tv? Basically its sending the audio signal from the ps5 to the tv by hdmi and then the tv sends the audio signal from the ps5 to the mixamp from the optical port. Also if im using my arc port on my tv for my av reciever do i need to switch the audio source on my tv to optical or will it switch automatically? Thanks
I finally managed to snag a ps5 yesterday. This is my exact question as I try to get my old $350 Astro tr mixamp to work with my ps5.
I have my TV audio going via ARC to my receiver. Do I have to keep switching from the toslink to HDMI?
Sorry I haven't tried that configuration so I can't say for sure.

Sound like I have an obstacle. My Samsung Q80T has only one HDMI 2.1 port, that works with my PS5.
Searching the options on TV, about digital sound output, it shows that transmission option will only work if the signal comes by an HDMI-ARC port.
The problem is that this port is HDMI 2.0.
What do you think?
Cool video, one issue, when you go to Chat Audio instead of All Audio there is a delay. It’s noticeable.
If you have a delay then you need to turn of all sound enhancers on your tv. It causes the delay.
Just turn all audio features off

But by doing this the sound also still comes out of my soundbar that's connected to my TVs arc hdmi. Is there a way to stop this without muting my soundbar everytime I use my ps5?
No, you just need to mute your soundbar.

Is that setting being adjusted on your tv or the ps5?
The tv is adding a delay as it tries to process the sound. If it's not the tv then try changing the tv setting, not ps5 one

I just had one question, did you revert the HDMI Device type back to TV after your unlocked the channels to 5.1?
I've been experimenting a lot and personally found that when set to TV, Linear PCM and enabling 3d audio for TV speakers the spatial awareness in some games significantly improved.
I don't use 3d audio at all. It just doesn't sound good to me.
Actually I connect my creative sound blaster x-fi 5.1 usb to ps5 , it work on optical cable bypass output to 5.1av amp ,but I not yet try dts games, so means av amp just 2ch front for game without dts
Actually, the USB only outputs 2 ch sound all the time.
Your device doesn't have an optical line in, you need one with optical in, and set it up like I show in my videos. Then you will get surround sound and it will be a lot better

So you talk about the limitations of the splitter but you have a TV that doesn’t do 4K, 120Hz?? The splitter isn’t hindering anything at that point.
Yes, My TV only supports 4K @ 60 hz.
However, the splitter does introduce input lag to the TV which is a concern. I'm not a pro gamer by any means, but adding any delay to a game that counts on reaction time to succeed is a bad idea. In this case there is a solution that keeps that input lag away, and it allows me to get the best image my TV can offer.
Also, the game Im currently playing (warzone) only supports 4K @ 60 hz anyway. So in this case, the setup I am showing is the BEST setup youll get, even if the TV did support more.
Great video. I am currently running A50s on my PS5 connected via optical to my TV which has been working fine but I just realized I dont think the built-in mix amp feature is working. It feels like it only adjusts the overall volume. Any ideas?
Yep, go onto the settings. Tell it to send only voice chat over USB and audio to the TV speakers.

But my TV does have a optical port , so basically you’re saying I don’t need the audio extractor at all? I could just plug the SteelSeries box directly into my TV with the optical cable? There should be no change at all in sound quality. The hdmi cable carries digital sound to the tv. The tv splits it off and send it to the mixamp

Make sure the mic is plugged all the way in. And make sure the headphone cable is plugged in the correct way

How do you get the microphone to switch over to USB HEADSET (Astro MixAmp Pro)? I’ve tried many things and nothing seems to work. Only the microphone on controller option shows up
I have a monitor samsung g7 28 4k and steelseries it seems there is not audio extractor for 4k 120hz. There is a solution for fix this issue. I can't use full potential of the headset because I'm connected the dac through the USB. Please help me I'm getting crazy. I used the head on the ps4 pro and the sound was fantastic now is ok but nothing compared of my previous experience.

its not a really big deal.
But if you wanted to run 3D audio just switch the output to headphones from CHAT, to ALL AUDIO. That will unlock the 3D audio setting if you want to use it.
Mine was working just fine and all of a sudden it wasn’t and I had to switch to all audio. That’s the only way I get sound now any other way it doesn’t work. Do you have any ideas what it could be to get me back to being able to use the mix amp? Thank you in advance

Unfortunately I don't have an xsx so I can't help with the settings. But yes, you should be able to do the same
Problem 2: yes, you can watch on tv volume still or headphones. When on headphones you need to turn tv volume down.
@@GearsAndTech hey i just managed to buy an PS base station to test your settings on my PS5 but it doesn’t work. First of all I have a Astro A50 and a Samsung TV. The A50 has 2 optical plugs (in/out). The TV doesn’t recognize the optical input and I cannot change from PCM. However I have sound over my headset. If I turn off the power of my tv I don’t get sound anymore which is a sign that the sound doesn’t come via USB.
I have a question. I have a Samsung series 6 4K tv. It has the optical out but I don’t see an option for the raw setting in the sound settings. If you have any info I’d greatly appreciate it.

Try both. Bitstream should be the right one for the tv

Anything that uses optical line in for its audio source will work with this setup

I dont think UA-cam supports 5.1 channel sound. By that I mean, the videos can be uploaded with 5.1 or 7.1 channel sound, but UA-cam will convert it into stereo sound.
So, no, I dont think thats a good way to test it.
You could load up a bluray disc. The starting sequence for a lot of movies usually puts out full 5.1 or 7.1 sound which you should be able to hear the difference when your headphones are set to Dolby mode vs Stereo mode.
For me, when I had it working right and pushed the dolby button I thought the sound had stopped going through my headphones and was now blasting through my 7.1 Home Theater at full volume. It sounded that clear, with good spatial distancing.
I was SHOCKED when I pulled my headphones off and realized the sound was coming through my headphones the whole time!
In short, if its working, it should sound noticeably different from stereo mode.

@@GearsAndTech nope, so what i was planning to do is switch the optical cables back and forth. Sound bar for when i watched TV and headset cable for when i played. i had to factory reset my tv to get it to function again properly. Its like i had the TV confused because i was getting only TV audio also when i had by headset cable plugged in before i reset it.
I cant talk using the headset though. It doesn’t let me talk but i can hear.

Are you able to turn it off? If not, your other hdmi port on the tv should not support arc. Try one of those ports.
Usually the tv will have a sticker that says of that port supports arc or not
