My favorite song on one of my favorite albums. The South African musicians he worked with were so marvelous and two of the best who were the core band for about half the album are on this track: guitarist Ray Phiri and bassist Bakithi Kumalo. "Losing love is like a window in your heart/Everybody sees you're blown apart" is so sad and so true.
When I was in high school my family drove to the beach for a summer vacation in a convertible Mustang GT with this album the only tape in the deck, we listened to it end-to-end, over and over, and to this day when i listen to it I can smell the sea air, see the oaks covered in Spanish moss as we made our way east, feel the backseat breeze and taste the shrimp sandwiches from the Shrimp Shack just off of Hunting Island, SC. Even if this album was not absolute magic for me, it would still be a piece of art. I am lucky enough to have been imprinted by this album for that magical summer, and it's been a part of my life ever since.
In an article at American Songwriter, Paul Simon gave an interview in which he stated that he'd not wanted the song to be about Elvis. "However: I’m going to Graceland / Graceland / Memphis Tennessee / I’m going to Graceland, the lines go, detailing an urgent need to be at the late Elvis Presley’s Memphis estate... Paul did go to Elvis's Graceland and: "He finished the tour and went outside where he spotted Presley’s grave. “It said ‘Elvis Presley whose music touched millions of people all around the world,’” Simon recalled, “and I read it and I just started to cry, I mean this guy was loved by everybody.” "He compared going to Graceland and waiting with the crowds to a religious experience, a pilgrimage people from all walks of life take, gathering together in remembrance of their common god, Elvis." Paul was a fan of Elvis's music; he stated that as far as he was concerned, Elvis did the best version of "Bridge Under Troubled Water." High praise from the man who wrote the song & recorded it with Art Garfunkel. Irrespective, it is a lovely song.
I think this album was made working with black South African musicians at a time when some artists in the music world were highlighting & adding pressure to the apartheid laws in S Africa in an attempt to undermine the regime
Paul is an absolute treasure...a legend. So diverse
Eclectic.🔥💃🌹🔥💃🌹
Nice.
The entire album is a work of art! You need to listen to every track.
One of the best albums ever made. It is fantastic!
Great reaction to a great song, thanks Stan!
Paul Simons lyrics should be in a book format as poetry. He is brilliant.
Absolutely. He deserves the Nobel Prize as much as Dylan did.
Well said, a genuine reaction.
