On 9/11/2001 my friend called and told me to listen to this song. We were in our 40’s, everyone knew this song. We had already been crying all day. But the part about dreaming of dying, flying past the Statue of Liberty… we can’t be forever blessed. It just felt like Paul knew America wouldn’t last forever. Or something like that. As someone who has covered Paul Simon and Simon and Garfunkel songs for 50 years, I would say that his best lyrics are in "Kathy's Song" and if you want to hear some really good acoustic guitar playing, listen to "Anji" which is a guitar solo. It has a fantastic walking bass line with two other parts playing simultaneously. His guitar playing is off the charts on that one.

Paul Simon is a national treasure. He is a Gershwin award winner for songwriting. He is now 82 years old and near the end of the line. There is a recent documentary on Simon strongly recommended: The Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon (I saw it on Amazon Prime) which was released this year, and features him making his most recent, and possibly his last album (available in full on UA-cam) - Seven Psalms, which continues his exploration of spirituality throughout his career and most recently as he approaches the end of his life. The documentary covers nearly all of his career from the beginning until the present day, and includes biographical information about wives, kids and relationships. I recently wrote an essay on the occassion of the 60th anniversary of the assasination of John F. Kennedy and led off the essay with a Simon song - The Sounds of Silence, which he wrote to capture the mood of the country at the time of the assasination. That song was also played after 9/11. It is featured in the documentary, along with many of his other great efforts. This "American" tune is actually German, having been composed about 425 years ago by German composer Hans Leo Hassler (though Paul Simon did add a bridge). The original lyrics were based on a medieval Latin text. They have since been translated into German and English. Thanks to Larry. I love this song. I have a strong memory of the first time I heard it and the way it resonated with me on that first hearing. "Still, when I think of the road we're traveling on I wonder what's gone wrong" This was the line that, for me, changed the focus of the song from personal to the direction America as a nation was going. With our current hour seeming even more uncertain, I find melancholy and comfort in this song still. It's one of several where I turn up the volume and its magic wash over me.
The great thing about this song is Paul and Arthur sang it together (for the first time) during The Concert in Central Park 1986?. Garfunkle's high vocals make that rendition a true fan favorite judging by the thunderous applause.
This time in the 70s wasn't a particularly uplifting time. The Viet Nam was wearing on everyone. However at this time, a beautiful red thoroughbred named Secretariat won the Triple Crown setting record times. He lifted the whole country's spirits when we needed it. RIP, Big Red.

The two best singer/songwriters (IMO) are Paul Simon and Willie Nelson. Willie was giving a small concert in New York I believe, and invited Paul on to the stage. Of course, the audience went nuts, as they should have, and they performed “Homeward Bound”. I was then transported to what I can only describe as Heaven. Paul Simon is a genius lyricist, second only to Bob Dylan IMO. He's also a great producer, arranger, musician and singer. He was the driving force behind Simon and Garfunkel, Art Garfunkel just had a beautiful voice. Then Simon went on to a hugely innovative and inventive solo career.
I watched this on SNL as an 11 year old and there was Nixon’s resignation, the Vietnam War had just ended, there was a huge disillusionment with the USA. This is my all time favorite Paul Simon solo performance. ❤

Giddens was the only individual singer to perform with Simon, and Paul simply accompanied her on guitar which was an unusual setup. Simon introduced Giddens by saying, "I made a new friend this week." So, I'm guessing this was his idea rather than that of the producer. Rhiannon has said that the change in lyrics moved her so much that she cried throughout rehearsal. She frequently sings American Tune now during her regular concerts.

IMO...This song, and most S&G songs I've heard, sound much better on the Concert in Central Park than they do on the studio albums. I think they perfected the tunes during their later live shows. This is similar to the Boss and other great artists. Thanks for all you do. Cheers!
Please complete your study of this work by bringing in one of the versions by the extraordinary Miss Rhiannon Giddens. Paul Simon rewrote the lyrics especially for her. If I had to pick just one, I'd look for the one backed by Francesco Turrisi & Martin Hayes. The others are important too because Paul Simon just stands back and lets Rhiannon sing. But the one I suggested has superior audio.
If you want to hear this song sung by a great singer, look for the live version he did with the magnificent Rhiannon Giddens. I cried, and that’s not my usual reaction to even the greatest songs.

It's only my humble opinion but Paul Simon is second only to Dylan in American songwriters. There are so many greats but the bodies of work of these two are, to me, the top of the pyramid.
Surely he's not just referring to recent immigrants. Almost the entire population of the USA is made up of immigrants from everywhere " they come on the ship they call the Mayflower" and then "the ship that sails the moon" to illustrate progress, a very clever line I always thought.

The finger picking and chord progression in this song is pretty complicated and he does it so well while singing the song.

IMO...This song, and most S&G songs I've heard, sound much better on the Concert in Central Park than they do on the studio albums. I think they perfected the tunes during their later live shows. This is similar to the Boss and other great artists. Thanks for all you do. Cheers!

Please complete your study of this work by bringing in one of the versions by the extraordinary Miss Rhiannon Giddens. Paul Simon rewrote the lyrics especially for her. If I had to pick just one, I'd look for the one backed by Francesco Turrisi & Martin Hayes. The others are important too because Paul Simon just stands back and lets Rhiannon sing. But the one I suggested has superior audio.

If you want to hear this song sung by a great singer, look for the live version he did with the magnificent Rhiannon Giddens. I cried, and that’s not my usual reaction to even the greatest songs.

Paul was the genius writer but Art was the voice of the duo. Sad when they split.
It's only my humble opinion but Paul Simon is second only to Dylan in American songwriters. There are so many greats but the bodies of work of these two are, to me, the top of the pyramid.

Surely he's not just referring to recent immigrants. Almost the entire population of the USA is made up of immigrants from everywhere " they come on the ship they call the Mayflower" and then "the ship that sails the moon" to illustrate progress, a very clever line I always thought.
