Ladysmith Black Mambaso and Ray Phiri were Mbaqanga musicians - a style of music in South Africa with Zulu roots.
On my list of a handful of perfect albums. Without pretense or artifice. A masterpiece.
Yeah, easy top 5 all time for me which is wild because I grew up listening to this in my mum's car. Nothing else really stuck with me from that kind of childhood thing into adulthood and into my 40s.
It is a PERFECT album. There isn't a bad moment.
" As if I never noticed the way she brushed her hair from her forehead " is one of the most extraordinary lines ever
This album is a trip. Every song is so original. Paul is the Lyric GOAT.
Paul's band during this era was freaking incredible.
As a kid this is the first album I ever saw. My father bought it at a Tower Records in Sacramento. The record sleeve had all the lyrics. I learned every word.
If you haven't heard Ladysmith Black Mambazo, you must!
Paul Simon gathered several musicians from South Africa to record this song -- Ray Phiri, guitars; Demola Adepoju, pedal steel guitar; Bakithi Kumalo, bass; Vusi Khumalo, drums; Makhaya Mahlangu, percussion; plus The Everly Brothers with additional vocals. Other choice cuts from the album include "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes", "Homeless", "The Boy in the Bubble", and "You Can Call Me Al". Also check out "Loves Me Like a Rock", "Kodachrome", "My Little Town" (with Art Garfunkel), and "Late in the Evening".
And not forgetting Ladysmith Black Mambazo
Yes, but they did not sing on this song and that list was specific to this song.
@@mikecaetanoyou did say that. I misread it. My bad. I was looking at your mention of Homeless and Diamonds On The Souls Of Her Shoes
"As if I'd never noticed the way she brushed her hair from her forehead" is one of the most extraordinary lines ever!
There are only a few artists in popular music who could be considered genius or close to it. I think that Paul Simon is among those few.
I LOVE the entire album. Every song is perfect. Paul Simon is the greatest American poet in modern music in my opinion. His lyrics are deep, beautiful and easy to relate to. He made this album either during or shortly after a painful divorce, which may have contributed to the "brokenhearted" theme here. Even though there was a cultural boycott of South Africa, due to apartheid, and no performers were going there. Paul wanted to make an album featuring the interesting and talented artists of South Africa to show his support of them. That's why some of the intruments sound foreign and heavily featured in other songs are the etheral cappella group "Ladysmith Black Mombassa" - their singing is heartbreaking. Please take a look at the Live version of "Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes" - it's really a great performance.
BTW - "Graceland" is the name of Elvis Presley's home in Memphis. It is now a museum and many of his fans make the pilgrimage there.
You mean Mambazo. 🙂
@@aleclewis9123 oops should have looked it up 🥴 Thanks
@@cindyfalstrom7231 that's alright. 🙂 Mambazo is Zulu for 'axe'. They used it in their group name because of how powerful and strong their vocals are.
I was listening to their 1987 album Shaka Zulu not long ago and it immediately captivated me. Definitely recommended. 🙂🙂
@@aleclewis9123 Thank you for the factoid, it's interesting and appropriate. They were mesmerizing.
“Everybody sees you’re blown apart…” Yup. We totally see it/feel it if we’re really looking, even if it’s hidden.
[next... *Kodachrome!* ] A lot of what you're hearing here are the rhythms, arrangement sand performances of the Sough African musicians he got together to make this album. Recordings took place in So Africa even though musicians were boycotting as part of the efforts against to end apartheid. Their music and vocals are awesome. The wikipedia actually has a lot of background
Graceland, Memphis, Tennessee, the home of Elvis. Paul was a big fan of Elvis and loved the way he sang "Bridge Over Troubled Waters". This whole album is really good. BTW, react to Elvis singing Bridge O.T.W.,1970 LasVegas. It is phenomenal. ❤
This is my husband's lucky album. He was gambling in Aruba and every time this song especially but any song from the album came on the speakers, he would start winning. It worked every time. Love this song
Losing love is like a window in your heart.....everybody sees you're blown apart... everyobody sees the wind blow. goddam that's pure feeling. thanks for the reaction!
Do yourself a favor and listen to the whole album. There's a reason it won a bunch of awards.
I agee, this would be a perfect album to listen to from beginning to end.
The entire Graceland album is fuego!! Paul Simon recorded it in 1986 during a cultural boycott of South Africa with local artists that wouldn’t have otherwise gotten such worldwide recognition. It’s an interesting story you should check out. The Boy in The Bubble, Gumboots, Crazy Love Vol. 2, Diamonds on The Soles of Her Shoes, I Know What I Know & Under African Skies are all great songs from this album.
Paul Simon's "Hearts and Bones" is the most hauntingly beautiful song my ears have ever heard.
Rene and Georgette Magritte with their dog after the war. 😍
This album absolutely shocked and delighted music lovers globally. What an artist, what a creative source of communication.
Way beyond impressive.... for the ages.
The thing that makes this album great is the fretless bass. It makes the entire album hop along.
"Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" from the "Graceland" album. You must hear this.
I believe Paul Simon loves music like a man loves a woman. He knows every inch of music, lyrics, and instruments. He knows how to handle music to make it do what he wants.
Funny you should mention break-up songs, cause Paul's got one of those too. "50 way's to leave your lover." 😂
I know you’ve responded to all the great instruments in Simon & Garfunkel songs, and that was always really Simon, as well as the poetic storytelling, and he’s developed it throughout his solo career. Graceland is the home of Elvis, and people make pilgrimages to that house/museum.
Love this take on Graceland
Same line blows me away! Even if "Losing love is like a window in your heart, Everybody sees you're blown apart..." means the broken one feels as the whole world can see, it's just such a poignant way to describe the pain of losing love. Same line got me from my first listen. Wonderful reaction"❤
One of my favorite albums over the years - love this song - the South African influence is so good - Another great song from the album is 'Diamonds on the soles of her shoes'
This song, among other things, is an homage to all the people who were (and still are) making a pilgrimage to Elvis' home in Memphis, which he called Graceland after his mother.
This album was so unique when it came out. I think it still is
Graceland, Memphis, Tennessee was the residence of one Elvis Aron Presley, and a major tourist attraction for the area. Managed to see Mr. Paul Simon in concert on the tour for this album, which is amazing from start to finish. The show also included the bands Ladysmith Black Mombazo and Hugh Masekella. Ladysmith was like a combunation of The Temptations and Greorian Chants, and Hugh was a master on the trumpet. Paul got the whole audience involved with his stage manner and talent and his music.
Make that Gregorian Chants, bad editing.
Paul is such a prolific songwriter. His lyrics are sometimes deep, sometimes quirky, always intelligent and distinct. "Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes," "Only Living boy in New York," "Mrs. Robinson."
Graceland is the name Elvis gave to his home in Memphis TN. This is a great album. If you want an album to react to...look no further.
Simon loved experimenting with rhythms. He featured Carribean, South American, and African rhythms in many of his songs. Both the album and the song Graceland feature African rhythms.
Hi @BizMatic although Paul Simon opposed the boycott of apartheid with the recordings of the record, it became a million seller. The entire album has become a masterpiece and the tracks from "Ladysmith Black Mambazo" are particularly worth mentioning with the title "Homeless". Thanks for sharing and best wishes @all from germany
Oh, pleeease do the whole album...! ☺
Graceland is Elvis Presley’s mansion, in Memphis
This entire LP is Excellent, one of the best ever I think. Treat yourself sometime and listen to this one from beginning to end. Thanks for sharing this track. 🙂
Paul Simon is great lyrically and musically. There is wide variety within albums and between albums. The albums are well produced.
He came screaming out of the blocks after S&G split, with his first solo album Paul Simon (~1972/platinum). It is my favorite although admittedly nostalgia is a factor. Recommend you go through his albums starting with that one.
Graceland is another standout album.
Great tune and lyrics. Yes at times you can see the emotions on people’s faces!
I agree with you BizMatik, as much as I enjoyed Simon and Garfunkel I much prefer Paul Simon on his own. Simon and Garfunkel catered to the university folk crowd and that worked for many years but it started to wear thin approaching the mid-1970's and was pretty much done by the beginning of the 1980's. Graceland was released in 1986 and I thought it was Paul's best solo album. This particular song was always my favourite song from this album. You're right about the bass line, it's killer. Cheers from Ontario, Canada!
The connection between Africa and ALL of American music is right here. Hence Graceland (Elvis) and the African beats. Love this album. Do Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes!
LEGEND
For my money, this album is absolutely perfect. One of the few that is flawless from start to finish.
An all-time great album - forgot how incredible this song is....thanks!
One of the best records ever made! You'll love it all! Great reaction
Put this exact title in your UA-cam search and show us your love by letting us watch you react to it. It has to be this video. With this full title. You can thank me later.
Paul Simon - Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes (from The African Concert, 1987)
My word, got this actual album decades ago for Christmas when it came out. There Goes Rhymin' Simon is a fantastic album, too.
You're right that the Grammys are b*******. A perfect example is the year 1967 which saw the release of the Doors' debut album, The Beatles" Sergeant Pepper, Jimi Hendrix's debut album and a psychedelic masterpiece by Jefferson Airplane called Surrealistic Pillow. Even with all those groundbreaking albums, The Fifth Dimension, who are an ok vocal group , won record of the year
This song always chokes me up
Oh, PLEASE listen to, "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes".
Definitely worth checking out this whole album!
The LP is a lost art! This album is easily in the conversation for top LP's ever, any genre!
This live concert was off the chain!
When you're done with the Graceland album check out Paul's "Rhythm of the Saints" album!
YES RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS IS A GREAT ALBUM
start with: She Moves On
and
Born at the Right Time
……such a talent !! Great reaction Biz 💯
Biz, it makes me happy just seeing your smiling face. ❤ Edit: especially when I know you’ll dig a song. If I were a bigger Elvis fan, I’d have been to Graceland many times already.
An absolute masterpiece!!
This was my first concert at 10 years old in 86'. Hundreds of concerts later, it's still one of the best.
This whole album is really great.
Graceland is in Memphis. It's the home of Elvis.
Such wonderful sounds
This was such an amazing album’s and Graceland is one of my all time favorite songs!
Willie Nelson willie nelson, doesno, sir mama, do not, don't mama, don't let your baby don't laugh at you. Babies grow up to base COWVO. I. Yes. That's what Willie said, mama. Don't let your baby screw up to make cowboys out of her hathe boys are right question mark
The importance of this album can't be overstated. This is the first true album featuring the sounds of South Africa after the fall of Apartheid. This album is perfection with every note played.
I don't know if you've done it already, but you'd love diamonds on the soles of your shoes❤️
For those who have a Spotify account, there's a real treat for you on the 25th anniversary album of Graceland. The last track. 'The Story of Graceland by Paul Simon'
One of these albums (there are quite a few, but still rare considering the number of albums released during the decades) that doesn't have a single bad or even mediocre song on it. Jewel after jewel.
Never mind the flack Simon got back then for dodging the cultural boycott on South Africa by making this record. It is one big celebration of colaboration without borders. Lifting music over any difference that may or may not exist.
Graceland was Elvis’ mansion. Many people make a pilgrimage to Graceland to see Elvis’ place. It’s an Elvis museum now.
my favorite Paul Simon album. and i been listening to him since the 60s. this whole album is good. not a bad song on it!
This album is an entire masterpiece
Simon wrote ALL the songs that he and Garfunkel recorded together. I think the difference you're hearing between Simon's solo career and Simon & Garfunkel is just his evolution as an artist. You could compare "Graceland" to songs off the two previous albums, "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" and "Paul Simon". You'll hear him exploring new musical themes on each album. You might try
"Loves Me Like a Rock" (ua-cam.com/video/CjFzw8AxSBA/v-deo.html), or
"Peace Like a River" (ua-cam.com/video/CgsAmUbrCnA/v-deo.html).
To me the main reason for grammy awards being bullshit doesn't mean the winners are bad songs or bad or undeserving, just that there are so many to choose from and they are almost all great. Might be interesting to see who beat Graceland that time around. Then there is commercialism but that's a different (maybe) discussion. In any case, wanted to say, this song and this album so often still give me a chill sometimes, often in fact.
Thanks for all you do! Great artist. Cant go wrong. Lots of great suggestions. I'll add a suggestion. React to The Bangles Hazy Shade of Winter, written by Paul Simon.
This album is all about the bass!
"Tenderness" or anything on There Goes Rhymin' Simon, worth a listen
Great pick!
The whole album is great, check out Diamonds on the soles of her shoes from same album,
Graceland in Memphis Tennessee is Elvis Presley's mansion, but he's punning with the idea of 'state of grace'
You've been grabbed by quality, and it was good to see. It's African influence. Listen to the album. Thank you.
Gotta do the whole album!
If you get a chance, check out Paul Simon-Under African Skies. That was a great movie/documentary
