      I’m thinking of getting that anamorphic lens to film a jungle thriller I’m writing, as it does portray things so cinematically - reminds me of some movies I loved as a kid.

      Everyone has exactly the same response as you after shooting anamorphic for the first time - the desire to sell all other lenses and ONLY shoot squeezed! :-) For me I rent Atlas if I need a set for a job, and I have the SLR 1.33 anamorphic adapter that fits perfectly on the Yonguo 25mm (great lens!) for quick and dirty personal use on my GH6. This lens looks interesting, but I think many more options are coming!

    You may think this video was wonky and disjointed,,, but above everything ,,you always convey your joy and knowledge of the whole modern photographic process. It's great to watch just how much fun you have making wonderful images,,, we'll always watch. You really should just make a long video of your work ,,especially with the acrobats and the fire dancers,,, set to music. I think it would be inspirational for the rest of us Micro Four Nerds

    I really like the cinematic colour rendition of this lens, but I can't handle the lack of edge to edge evenness of focus at all. 👀 You mentioned you shot in open gate, so I am concluding you were in the 5.7 K resolution setting. That image should look way better than it does ! 😳 You also stated you had some kind of effects filter on the front of your lens (???) It would be nice to see footage without that filter on the front. I own a 17 mm Laiawa MFT manual lens I use on my Z-Cam E2C and it's beautiful in its look and edge to edge sharpness is quite impressive.

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  Рік тому

      it was my usual ND filter which has a (very!) light mist effect, to be fair it doesn't add much to the image unless you're shooting into bright lights and it gives a little blooming sort of effect. on these overcast days I doubt it made much of a difference.
      I did relentlessly shoot wide open though, which is my assumption on why the edges are less sharp. I actually really like the effect! even though there is a loss of sharpness at the edges. I think that is definitely a characteristic of anamorphic lenses in general. Other Laowa lenses are super sharp in my experience as you say.

    Delightful, as always Emily!😊 I'm new to this type of lens and as usual you make the tech approachable. Do all anamorphic lenses have coloured flare? Or just this brand? Also, is there any benefit to using these for still photography -- to catch the funky flare, etc. -- or is the main use for video because of the squish factor. Cheers from Canada.

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  Рік тому +1

      They all have those styles of flares but some are white so a bit more neutral. The main use is for video, given the forced letterboxed aspect ratio, but I suppose there are no rules!

    What about to compare it with a 35 mm ( normal lens) filmed in 16:9? I know there will be much more less pixels, but maybe good enough for a 16:9 full HD? Have you tried that?

  • @Ulrich.Bierwisch

    The GH6 has an option for anamorphic stabilization. You can set it to 1.5 and in this case you don't have to take the squeeze into account. I think the stabilization is handling horizontal and vertical differently and if I remember it correct, the camera stabilizes no rotations because this looks wrong anyway.

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  Рік тому

      Interesting! I’ll have to look into this more. I kept the 1.5x squeeze mode on, and still had a little bit of camera shake. Nothing stabilisation in editing couldn’t fix, but enough to know I was doing something wrong!

    • @Ulrich.Bierwisch

    Th GH5 has an anamorphic stabilisation mode so I assume the GH6 would have as well.
    You could look at the Vormaxlens Compact 1,33x rev.5 for crop sensors. At $270 (plus $27 for the clamp) it's one of the cheapest options out there. For MFT you need a lens of 25mm or more. Works with autofocus and zooms.

    Very good, good work. A question tho.. there seems to be quite a bit of CA in the edges of the frame. I plan on shooting open gate myself with these lenses, just wondering if the larger sensor readout gave you any quality issues?

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  Рік тому

      I think a lot of this came down to me shooting quite relentlessly wide open when I didn’t need to. I’ve seen other videos where the results are much cleaner round the edges so maybe just stopping down ever so slightly would clean it all up

    You might be new to anamorphs, but I think there *is* one question you *can* answer: since you chose to check out the orange version, I assume you had discussions with the maker.
    So, were I to become able to afford a set, is it possible to order a "mixed set"? That is, maybe a 27 in silver flares, a 35 in blue and a 50 in orange, for example?
    Tah.

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  Рік тому

      you can buy each lens individually in whichever colour you fancy for a bit more total cost, but the sets are all matched to my knowledge. I’m sure I’ve seen a video on youtube that suggests if you’re indecisive on colour, you can get the silver one and change the colour of the flares in editing because they just come out white. Might be worth a Google!

    There is a lot of chromatic aberration in the footage. I would say that a lens with that much CA is unusable. How did you find the CA? The Sirui's for M43 are great in terms of CA (and cheaper). Could this be a bad unit? Great channel by the way and enjoy your content.

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  Рік тому +1

      I’ve been wondering if it is a slightly bad unit actually as the CA and sharpness is bad at the edges. I was shooting wide open the whole time so I’m sure a lot of problems clear up stopped down

    • @CUTSUK
      @CUTSUK Рік тому

      @@MicroFourNerds I have the Sirui 1.33x MFT for my GH5 & BMPCC4K and I usually shoot wide open on them. The CA is really minimal & not existent on the 75mm & 35mm. I think this might be a bad unit. This can happen on anamorphics when the blades aren't fully aligned. It could have had a knock in transit possibly. I'd definitely get them to send out another unit to try. I have seen some other examples of the lens and they do look really good and haven't noticed the CA before. In terms of anamorphic characteristics, the Laowa's seem really nice. Much more enhanced oval bokeh than Sirui's and the flaring seems a bit controlled. Nice you can pick your colour too!

    I'm having a love hate relationship with my Siuri 50mm anamorphic lens simply because I can't find the correct maths for converting my lens.
    Maybe you could help because my brain is going popity-ping. The lens is a 1.33x squeeze for a 16:9 sensor but we have a camera that does full-gate and I can't find the formula to convert a open-gate to de-squeeze. I've resorted to getting an Arri Alexa Test Sheet for aspect ratios with circles printed on it. And from there I eyeball the desqueeze on screen until I get, no giggling, big round balls.
    So far I have only done one project simply because I find it frustrating but I will try again.
    I've also learned that with a 50mm anamorphic lens, the rough equivalent full-frame desqueeze on the horizontal is 25mm. But I've read so much that my brain may be scrambled and that may be gobbledy-gook.

    • @MicroFourNerds

      I know what you mean, the aspect ratio hurt my head! I used this calculator, I basically had it open all the time in its own window while I was using this lens.

      @@MicroFourNerds No worries, just let me know if you ever want to play with the lens. I’ve finally worked out the optimal setting for it when editing in Resolve. I just increase the ‘x’ axis zoom only to 1.3 and all is good in the world.
      With a bit of trial and error I’ve landed on the 2:1 aspect ratio as a Jack of All setting.
      I’ve got an anamorphic episode for you to use as reference, should you change your mind.🤪

    • @geekinthegarden3927
      @geekinthegarden3927 Рік тому

      I purposely ignore all the tables and maths I've seen about anamorphics and try to keep it smimple.
      I have a 1.33x adaptor so multiply my horizontal axis of my image by 1.33 to desqueeze it (or divide the vertical by 1.33 gives the same effect) - actually I don't do that anymore as I use Davinci Resolve and go to clip attributes and set the pixel aspect ratio to 1.33 which sorts it out for me and I can use the zoom attribue to fit in frame/reframe as I want without having complicated numbers.
      On MFT uising open gate, the desqueesed 1.33x squeze ends up being 16:9 but at 4992 pixels wide instead of 3840 pixels for 4k. This gives a bit of space for reframing in a 4k time line.
      At 16:9 once desqueezed its (16*1.33):9 which is 21.28:9 or around 2.35:1 aspect ration (Cinemascope) as opposed to 16:9 being 1.77:1
      For field of view I divide the focal length by 1.33 to give me a guestimate - so a 50mm lens will give a horizontal field of view of about 37mm. Seems to be OK.
