I remember the Halloween of '98 fondly. I thought my trick-or-treating was being cut short but my mom told me we were going to the local Putt Putt Golf because something special was happening. My mom often took me there and was a light gun game enthusiast while I only liked House of the Dead. I get there, hyped on sugar and candy, to see the CarnEvil game where the old Area 51 was. My mom and I spent two hours on that game (and maybe over $10 just on Hambone) and got the high score for a while. I'll always remember that night and my mother's love of light gun games, I'll have to link this vid to her!
That is awesome and thanks for sharing. I love hearing memories of parents especially kids bonding with parents over videogames. I used to play Atari bowling and baseball with my dad. Cheers
The thing about this game that makes it incredible? The amount of enemy variety. There's over 40 different monsters in the game. Up to this point, most other lightgun games had recycled their enemy designs. In addition, Carnevil required each monster to be 3D rendered as well. Having a dip-switch to apply cosmetic changes to a boss is quite unique.
When I was a kid our local arcade let you buy there machines if you paid them enough. My parents got me this for Christmas and I still have it. Best gift I’ve ever received! Still have the machine to this day
This game freaked me out so much as a kid. Just going to bowling alleys or arcades and seeing the cover art shook me to my core. I just remembered this game like 10 minutes ago and looked up the title to see what all younger me’s fuss was about.
I was in the same boat!! Way to scared to ever dare play it as a kid but I couldn’t help but watch the intro video every time I walked past the bowling alley arcade.
That ryhme at the opening attract scene for this game is pure genius, chilling, yet informative. This carnival has a shockingly good amount of wordbuilding and im here for it!
Thanks for making this; this was great! I love the atmosphere of this game; definitely one of my favorite arcade games. I always thought the concept would make for a fun movie!
There used to be an arcade that was connected to a movie theatre here in Louisville Kentucky. I remember going to see Pokemon: The First Movie with my best friend and mom, and afterwards going over to the arcade where I first played this awesome game. I bought the flyer that advertised the game off of eBay years later. Really wish it would have gotten a home port instead of having to emulate it every time, but hey, at least it's still playable.

I have a very loving memory of this game. I only played it once when I was a kid and on vacation, and it was the only arcade game I've played with my late father. I remember getting the sensation of being in front of something very different, and it stuck on my all over the years. Great video man!
You are a a true treasure to all of us game fans. Thank you for continuing to educate all of us about the games we all love. Even the games I didn't know I loved
Its odd. I never realized three of my top five favorite lightgun games were from Midway until then. This, Terminator 2, and Revolution X. I played this once or twice a week (whenever I visited my then local Walmart) for a few months until I moved to the town I live in now plus I played it in many arcades and Pizza places. Edit: I hate the ending. I saw it three times, and the second and third I and whoever I was teaming with were trying to figure out how to unlock a good ending. After beating the game without Betty taking a hit and still getting the same end (It was a rumor one of my friends told me that claimed doing so was the path to the good end.) and still getting the same ending I gave up. I played the game more times but never bothered beating it again.
It's strange, aside from the Easter eggs there really isn't any alternate paths or different endings which kind of hurts the replay value. With that being said still fantastic creepy shooter
On a trip to Bend, Oregon with my son, we discovered this game in a retro arcade that was downtown. $5 an hour for unlimited play, and we blasted through Carnevil's entirety
I can imagine that meeting "They don't like shooting the baby.", "But it's a giant monster that vomits acid?", "Even still let's think of an alternate option." yeesh.🙄
My girlfriend and I found this game during a random stop at an arcade during a road trip, we were shocked that we had never seen this game before anywhere else

Midway now is a whale fall of what it once was and a game dev scene has formed around that corpse. Sure it became nether realm now but a bunch of the former talent aren’t in the game dev business now but I am grateful for what has laid the groundwork for my local game dev scene
I discovered this at Galloping Ghost recently and it's one of the most fun light gun games I've ever played. I'm shocked that they never ported it to consoles. It's true about how fast things move, I still feel like this video introduced me to a lot of things I hadn't seen!
Honestly, I think they didn't port it cause it was in that kind of weird era of technology, where no one really knew what it would land on due to being too well speced for the consoles already out, but not enough of a draw to justify porting to something newer. Is a great game, and beating it is a lot of fun.
Both times I've been to Galloping Ghost the lightgun games were all waaaay off as far as the guns' accuracy was concerned. How did you compensate for that?

The only game I’ve seen actually use this style instead of having it due to technology limitations is this one, and the Gregory Horror Show. Which is a shame, I honestly want more stylized polygon horror games. :/
My gawd. My whole crew really thought this Arcade was haunted! We believed it appeared outta thin air at the Arcade like in some Episode of Goosebumps and if you played it and loss- you died forreal. Sounds crazy now but trust me… you just had to be there!
I took my dad to the arcade to play this with him. I took my kids to the arcade to play this with them. I've taken dates to the arcade to play this with me. I've completed this while duel wielding the light guns. I want to have one of these in my living room someday.
Everything about this game scared the hell outta me! I remember this back in the Tilt arcade at the mall back in June 2003, the attraction mode of showing the kitchen showing the blood splattered everywhere including the body parts and zombies, I couldn’t get that scene outta my head for weeks! 😂😂 It’s good though to see this game coming back and getting more recognition!
My fondest memory of this game was discovering its existence when I visited a movie theatre in another town to see Erin Brockovich with my mother in 2003. I was wow'ed by the scenery and the amount of quality the theatre itself had including some badass arcade machines. (My Local theatre didn't have those at the time.) And saw CarnEviL for the first time. It's the small touches that stick with you in a good way. :)
Absolutely which is why I mentioned a 4K release. There are so many details in the backgrounds that the developers put in but they are kind of hard to see.
Dude, back in 2000 or 2001 my local pool hall got this cabinet in and I played the shit out of it! I’m a Zombie fan too so the “Super beast” intro brought me in and I stayed. I was friends with the owner so he let me keep the key to the cabinet and I played for free
Love this game and the lore behind it. I wish it could get a remaster/remake. Today's technology, an indie developer could possibly work on said project 🤷🏻♂️
i spent countless hours playing this at the local arcade before they closed. I've considered saving up to buy this cabinet but if i can go to chicago and check it out hell yeah
Super interesting facts! Been giving this great game a go with MAME and couldn't help but check out some nice history behind it. Thanks for the vid, this is comfy to listen to!
Love love love this game. I do have to wonder about the “Salty Jack” doll display in the game. Did the makers of this game make an amalgamation of the Cracker Jack logo character and Robert The Doll, the famous haunted doll in Florida? Robert is also dressed in a sailor outfit and is usually enclosed in a glass display case, which of course they claim is for the public’s safety. Kinda seems like a mix of both.
I mean, they went out of their way to have the “Cracker Jack” sign above the display and the color on the costume is definitely more bold than the one Robert has. It’s just a nice little detail most people would never notice being there in the first place unless they were scouring the background for details.
a local hockey rink had this, I spent so much of my dads quarters but never beat it, then the screen went and it sat there forever with an OutofORder slapped on it.
Great video as always, thank you! Glad to hear that Midway moved a lot of units, but I think a lot of people missed this one since it was released after the height of arcades' popularity and never got a true console release.
Wow I am 100% in on the VR game. The provided link does not work btw. Great video! I used to love this game as a kid. My pizza place had it right next to The House of the Dead and Time Crisis 2. Good times
Hi Patman! CarnEvil, just in time for Halloween! A great look at the history of this creepy Halloween themed nightmare firing game versus evil monsters. Cool to see some of the horror sketches for the game. Great documentary, thanks!! Cool also there is a planned VR inspired CarnEvil game, which reminds me of PSVR1's Rush of Blood VR, which has the player on a cart ride blasting away at demonic monsters. Cool to see the audio issues have been resolved. Great video, Happy Halloween, Patman! Thank you.
8:35 I never knew they could be called "hayrack rides," before this video. I had assumed it was an error so I looked into it. I love learning new names for things or just different things in general. Cheers
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries o nice, I bet they have refined the hayrack ride into an art form there. Sadly I only have been able to go on a few as a kid in California. Now I live in Alaska where they are pretty much unknown which is too bad because the ones I went on were a lot of fun
love CarnEvil. it was so different. really wish these arcade games would be re-sold digitally. everytime these videos come out make me want to relaunch mame.
This is probably my fave arcade game and I wanna own a cabinet one day. I remember when it came out, Midway had desktop wallpapers for it and it used to be my background but those have sadly been lost to time it seems.
Update i took it upon myself to own the LLC of carnevil you guys are now looking at the new own cosmicwave studios has plans to include this game with polybius a cosmic horror game dont worry its in good hands wont be the same at the original but more gory and insane.
I remember trying the arcade and experience to myself also it was really hard but I did put enough quarters to beat that game overall it's one the best shoot them up games and one of the best survival horror games of all time
I used to go to the corner score in my neighborhood with my friend, he'd have 30 bucks form mowing a lawn so we'd get some snacks and blow like 10 bucks trying to get as far as we could. I wonder where that friend is now? Wish we could of kept in touch, he was a good dude. I saw this at Circus Circus years later as well.
I loved this game, but it was a rare one where I live. Only 1 arcade had it, and no one else I know remembers it. Also thank you for showing the ending, I never had enough money to finish it, and the emulator kept crashing for me.
i didn't know there was suppose to be a big baby in the game? We had Teddy in our Arcade. i usually don't give shootem ups more than a dollars worth of quarters as they use almost the same monster in every level, but this game had a huge variety of baddies coming at ya! So CarnEvil munched a lot of quarters out of me! Also has my favorite monster of all time, Krampus! Kind of cool to think they created something so good it was not converted to home consoles! But if it follows Horror Movies this will not be the final resting place for CarnEvil. Mwahahaha!
I would love to buy this machine but I heard its hard to keep in working order because of rarity of parts. Played the hell out of this game during all tou can play 20 dollar midnights at the arcade on friday night. My friends swore this was an ICP/Tim Burton game.
I was just thinking i should stop by the ghost sometime to play this again. Then you showed a picture of Doc, great guy with an awesome place. The ghost is expanding as we speak
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries they started putting up new walls in the building to the left. If they keep going at this rate they'll need a new building
Man this is great This game was out right as j was a kid so i never got a chance to try it, but it always caught my eye and i was imagining one day getting to try it. Sadly, arcades started dying out long before i was old enough to journey out to them on my own, and now that im an adult, I havent even seen these at "retro barcades" to the point i completely forgot of it until i saw the clown on the thumbnail
Of course I always hoped we could have seen the boat ride / tunnel of love section that was cut during development. The concept art that survived looked fantastic. There is such a rabbit hole to go down regarding this game. It gets wild with theories about its development and developers. Still one of the best games ever created and the song Big Bunyan Ride was so catchy & morbidly funny, I wish a complete remastered game score would be released.
I remember seeing this on a vid about top gory arcade games, and this game came onto the list. Gave it a shot, and man, it was a blast to play. To this day, I have it on my PC running on MAME 64 bit, and have it running portably on my Steam Deck.

Sorry about the link, I've changed three times and he keeps reverting back. Try this youtube.com/@illuminatidad
Thank you.
The VR game looks pretty cool so you should check it out. Happy Halloween. Thanks
8:35 I never knew they could be called "hayrack rides," before this video. I had assumed it was an error so I looked into it. I love learning new names for things or just different things in general. Cheers
I grew up in the cornfields of Illinois and Iowa and that's what they were always called
Thankfully we have the emulator so we can play a few games every now and then
I’ve never heard of this game but I’m sure I’ll love the video! Patman is the man
Thanks a ton my friend
That game is almost living hell were you are alone player.
This is probably my fave arcade game and I wanna own a cabinet one day. I remember when it came out, Midway had desktop wallpapers for it and it used to be my background but those have sadly been lost to time it seems.
It's possible, have you tried the way back machine?
Tried that many years ago and no go. I suspect SOMEONE out there has then still.

4:05 Honestly, the initial concept reminds me a lot of Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion. Haeger was decades ahead of his time in that regard.
Yes he was
Wow I had forgotten about this game. We loved playing it back in the day.
It was a lot of fun
Update i took it upon myself to own the LLC of carnevil you guys are now looking at the new own cosmicwave studios has plans to include this game with polybius a cosmic horror game dont worry its in good hands wont be the same at the original but more gory and insane.
Sounds really cool
I remember playing Carn-Evil at the arcade when I was in high school and my friend likes the game too.😀👍🎮
I remember trying the arcade and experience to myself also it was really hard but I did put enough quarters to beat that game overall it's one the best shoot them up games and one of the best survival horror games of all time
Protagonist:well that was a wild ride
I'ma play again.
Friends:da fu...?
But...we just got out of that hellhole.
The moment he got friend zoned.😂
It's a classic
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I agree it is a classic. 😀👍🎮
Looks great! Man, I wish arcades were more common in my country back in the day, but they were more or less nonexistent.
That sucks
Funny you should mention that ride, they had something just like it at West Edmonton Mall
That is cool
I used to go to the corner score in my neighborhood with my friend, he'd have 30 bucks form mowing a lawn so we'd get some snacks and blow like 10 bucks trying to get as far as we could. I wonder where that friend is now? Wish we could of kept in touch, he was a good dude. I saw this at Circus Circus years later as well.
Very cool, thanks for sharing your memories. I love reading about that stuff
I used to play CarnEvil all the time at my local Putt Putt. I was never much for horror games, but I loved this one.
It was so cool and unique
I loved this game, but it was a rare one where I live. Only 1 arcade had it, and no one else I know remembers it. Also thank you for showing the ending, I never had enough money to finish it, and the emulator kept crashing for me.
Absolutely, it was a tough game to beat
Omg I loved this game soooooooo much me and my friends would go straight for it at the arcades
It was so much fun
i didn't know there was suppose to be a big baby in the game?
I have read that as well
I was just thinking i should stop by the ghost sometime to play this again. Then you showed a picture of Doc, great guy with an awesome place. The ghost is expanding as we speak
Yes, Doc is extremely nice. They were expanding a couple of years ago when I was up there. Very cool place
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries they started putting up new walls in the building to the left. If they keep going at this rate they'll need a new building
Thank you pacmanqc
Thank you for Watching
Please do a series of videos on the history of Time Crisis by Namco
Late 90s? Dang, no wonder I missed this one. Arcades were mostly gone around here by then.
Yes they were dying off but still around in my area
The closest we might get is a game called happy funland for ps5.
I will have to check that out
I'm curious if you'll do a video on Namco's Time Crisis series someday
Zombies ate my neighbors was first to have you kill a giant baby.
Man this is great
This game was out right as j was a kid so i never got a chance to try it, but it always caught my eye and i was imagining one day getting to try it. Sadly, arcades started dying out long before i was old enough to journey out to them on my own, and now that im an adult, I havent even seen these at "retro barcades" to the point i completely forgot of it until i saw the clown on the thumbnail
It was quite the game. My brother in law and I played it back and forth at the arcade.
It was Truly something special
Great documentary on one of my favorite arcade games. Would love to see more games with this “dark carnival” aesthetic
Glad you enjoyed it!Thanks
Great video!
My suggestion for the next one would be Atomic Runner Chelnov
Thanks
Of course I always hoped we could have seen the boat ride / tunnel of love section that was cut during development. The concept art that survived looked fantastic. There is such a rabbit hole to go down regarding this game. It gets wild with theories about its development and developers. Still one of the best games ever created and the song Big Bunyan Ride was so catchy & morbidly funny, I wish a complete remastered game score would be released.
Wow, another youtuber doing a CarnEvil video in the same week.
The more the merrier
I was not aware there was another one. Was it a history video like mine?
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Yeah kinda, it was Bexx Reviews. You both cover stuff the other didnt though.
This should of been ported in the home consoles such as Dreamcast, ps2, Saturn or original xbox
I agree, it was a missed opportunity
Great vid
Thanks
The game's 25th anniversary is this coming Halloween.
Yes indeed, October 31
This game used to be at the arcade in my local mall when i was a kid. I was always to scared to play it.
LOL, that's not the first time I've heard that
I remember playing this game back in the day, it was pretty fucking good, the only downside for me was waiting in line to play
It was popular around here as well
I remember seeing this on a vid about top gory arcade games, and this game came onto the list. Gave it a shot, and man, it was a blast to play. To this day, I have it on my PC running on MAME 64 bit, and have it running portably on my Steam Deck.
Yes I have it on Mame as well and it works pretty good with the mouse
