Last I checked, MAME still couldn't run it. Maybe someone has a standalone emu for it, like Time Crisis 5 and House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn 🤔
This arcade cabinet was absolutely everywhere. Easily one of the most common 90's arcade games found. I really loved Area 51 back when it came out, and I did buy the PS1 port when that released. However, I did not have the Konami Justifier. Toys R' Us (where I bought Area 51 at) had the MadCatz "Fazor" for sale to go along with the game. As bad as the Fazor looked, it actually performed good enough to get the job done, and was compatible with both the PS1 and the Saturn.
Bro i was just reminiscing last night to myself about playing this bad boy at Casa Bonita for my birthdays back in the 90's. Glad to have found this video, my friend.

I remember one day he had save a crap ton of quarters over the year. We played the game together till we beat it, since we had a nearly limitless supply of quarters.
I used to play Area 51, MK1 and 2, and TMNT whenever I went to my old local "Time Out" arcade. They were my go-to arcade games... this one was my go-to shooter! I had come home on leave to visit family after being in Germany for a year. During a trip to the mall I ducked into an arcade to play a few games and this was one of them. As we went inside we passed a Marine recruiter who was trolling for possible recruits. I settled into this game and tore it a new asshole. The recruiter noticed and was ready to hand me a business card when my mom stopped him. "Sorry gunny, the Army got him already." The Marine smiled, hung his head and moved to his next target.
13:41 "Entering hanger complex 1 8." is a nice little Megadeth 'Hanger 18' reference! 'Area 51' would make a great Arcade1Up cabinet, especially if they include 'Maximum Force' and 'Site 4.'

This is a game that brings back a lot of memories in the arcade. There used to be one in the mall that was near me growing up. You could hear this game blasting thru the halls of the place and the sound of the aliens "URGH" is deeply embedded into my brain haha That same mall was also used for the movie, "The Lovely Bones!"

There were a couple of places in my area that had Area 51 machines. I've dumped plenty of quarters into it in the past. I remember seeing a copy of the PC port at K-Mart back in the day but it had a ridiculous $80 price tag on it. A few years ago I managed to find an unopened copy online for around $30 and bit the bullet.
I don't know how you do it man but you always pick so my favorite games to do deep dives into. I really appreciate it I've always wanted to know the background of this one and it's so hard to find Details
I never had the chance to defend Area 51 from the alien invaders in this arcade game, so thank you for the detailed history of this Area 51 arcade blaster game. The full motion video was something. I do remember reading about the reboot Area 51 in gaming magazines back when it was made. Thanks, PatmanQC!
Wonder where Terry is now. How cool would it be to forever be able to tell your kids and anyone else that you're in an arcade game, especially one as cool as Area 51. And holy shit at the absolute most bizarre trivia imaginable...the dude who did the stop motion animation for this game was a part of the Flying Burrito Bros !!?!?!? haha that is such a random factoid and as a huge fan of that group, amazing to learn. Fucking wild!
Whenever my friends and I were having a weed-smoking session and the pipe/bong we were smoking from became empty, someone would inevitably start chanting, "Reload! Reload! Reload!" in the same tone/pace as the game voice does for reloading your gun.
I love this game! It's been like 20yrs since I last played this game in the arcades, but while watching the video, I still remember where everything is. What a game.
Worked at a theater ages ago on the overnight cleanup crew that had one of these cabinets. A few of us would waste our breaks messing on it. Lots of lost quarters. One of the few arcade games I got to see the end screen.
Been playing this on the new retro shooter lightgun kit. Runs great and the sequel too! Who else had area 51 with the playstation GUNCON back in the day?
I used to play this two-gun kid style at my local Fuddruckers while waiting on my burger during college. I never beat it because my food was usually ready before I got there. I really liked playing light gun games using both guns. I even developed a pretty good system of ensuring that my reloads were offset, my left hand was offense and my right was defense when needed and everything. More than a couple of times, I melted the minds of elementary kids who never even considered using both guns at the same time.
I remember dual wielding and having an accuracy OVER 100%, how you ask? I had a 100% accuracy and then I use 1 grenade to kill more than 1 enemy. Damn I was good.
This is one of my all time favorites for arcade, apart from time crisis and among other legends. This game is truly a staple of its time. It’s beyond nostalgia when you play it, it’s like your time traveling back to the early 90’s.
Ahhh, one of my favorite games ever! The memory of grinding this game at Qzar, a lazer tag place in Rohnert Park, Northern CA, Ill never forget. The secrets are what made this game legendary.

@@GHMYahooka it was super innovative... I was not a big fan of most light gun games because there was no way to dodge the incoming bullets and it made those games cost soooo many quarters at the arcade.

Love playing Area 51 and timeless classic shoot'em up. My best friend and I use to rock playing this at a local billiard ions ago. Another excellent video Patman.
Still love this game, even though it came out a few years before I was born. Love giving it a whirl whenever I find one at a local barcade. Warner Bros. should really consider a rerelease cab of the old Atari Games titles or even just an arcade 1up.
Mirrored cab doesn't have anything to do with the screen being too close to work, that why most of these games have a setting to flip the image. The mirrored cabinet creates depth, regular is cheaper to build. it's personal preference.
Love your channel Patman! I'm surprised there isn't some tie-in with Resident Evil since the main character in this is pretty much in STARS and dressed exactly the same. Would be neat to have Capcom say that aliens are also a part of storyline!
Play this one several times at my local arcade back in the day and it was really cool to blast aliens and zombie scum while hearing the booming sound effects every single time. A definite arcade classic in my book. Thanks for the video PatmanQC
At the time this came out I was already obsessed with the real Area 51 and aliens so naturally I played this to death. The Playstation version with the light gun was near perfect to the arcade for me.
Loved this game. Was one of my go to games whenever I was at any arcade, if they had it. It had so many power ups, bonus, and bonus stages that I never had the same experience twice.
incredible timing. just the other day i was thinking about which arcade games i put the most money into and area 51 is definitely up there for me. it all made me want to take a stroll down memory lane and watch a playthrough or maybe just learn a little about the making of and lo and behold here comes patman to scratch those itches :)
I owned this game on the PS1 when I was a kid and played it 100's of 1000's of times! Makes me super nostalgic. A local old school arcade bar near where I live, Pinky's Revenge in Taylors, SC, has an Area51 machine and it was the first time I played it in on an arcade. Brought back memories, as did your video. Thanks for this in depth look at the history of it!
This was in the arcade of my college campus back in the day. I couldn't play it as much as I would have liked, but it was so interesting that I'd stand there between classes and watch others give it a go.
I was super into this game when it came out for some reason 😆 what a classic. I even rented it for ps1 and didn’t even have the light gun and still found it fun
Stephanie Grant aka Kim was also the inspiration for Jill Valentine from Resident Evil. Even going as far as having STARS engraved into her pistol and her outfit alone. Pretty cool that a game with little budget and passion could inspire one of the best franchises in the gaming industry.
Another excellent video, Pat! This game was seemingly in every arcade back in the day no matter the size. My friends and I dropped a lot of quarters into this. I would love to see some type of modern re-release for it!
Finally I subbed with this account. After years watching with my personal one I finally remembered using this one!!! Now, to the video. (Which I am sure will be great as always)
Such a great game! I didn't play it much in the arcade but I had it for the ps1 and loved it. Great job with the vid and I would love to see another video on the other game. 💪🔥🙌
I love the full-motion video actors in this, it did get to a point of over-saturation with some games, but there's something fun about the whole thing, same with the cutscenes in Command & Conquer. Not sure if it's the same people, but Target Terror is another light gun game that came out that also uses live-action actors, and the pre-rendered graphics look similar, only this one came out in 2004. Might be worth checking out, just for the cheesy fun, haha.
I didn't know "site 4" was a sequel. I think it either used the same cabinet art or similar so I thought it was like a "turbo" or update to the original. Nice history video!
This games was so much fun. I spent a lot of time trying to find all the secret rooms. I always wondered if it influenced Resident Evil, STAARS vs STARS as well as a few other similarities.
They used to have this game in cici's pizza buffet , great times indeed ‼️early 2000's like 03

1:09, fun fact, I actually lived in the county of Nevada where The Bunny Ranch is located.
LOL you are the first person to mention it
I remember playing the crap out of this game at my local Walmart back in the day. RELOAD! RELOAD!
Fantastic. I am scratching nostalgic itches all across the world :-)
This game and die hard arcade..
Absolutely, thanks for watching
Pat should do Time Crisis next, also greetings Pat from the UK
This was in the arcade of my college campus back in the day. I couldn't play it as much as I would have liked, but it was so interesting that I'd stand there between classes and watch others give it a go.
I was super into this game when it came out for some reason 😆 what a classic. I even rented it for ps1 and didn’t even have the light gun and still found it fun
Yes, still lots of fun
Lots of memories in the early2000s playing this at the arcade down the shore. Thanks for the awesome documentary. *subbed
Awesome! Thank you!
As a kid, this was always my favorite arcade game, and luckily it was everywhere! Pizza parlors, movie theaters, actual arcades, and even gas stations
You mean stars from resident evil?
we had this game at the town rec center i WORKED at 2003-2009, I played the HELL out of this game when no one was around
That sounds fantastic
Stephanie Grant aka Kim was also the inspiration for Jill Valentine from Resident Evil. Even going as far as having STARS engraved into her pistol and her outfit alone. Pretty cool that a game with little budget and passion could inspire one of the best franchises in the gaming industry.
WOW! I was wondering which "STAARS/STARS" came first. Definitely very talented assets!
Yes, very cool indeed
A local bar in my area still has one. I haven’t been there in awhile but I played this game about a year ago
Awesome
Loved this game in the arcade. I would play 2 player and dual wield the guns as well.
That was the best way to play but a bit expensive :-)
Another excellent video, Pat! This game was seemingly in every arcade back in the day no matter the size. My friends and I dropped a lot of quarters into this. I would love to see some type of modern re-release for it!
I prefer this baby over Maximum Force.
Where I lived, this wasn’t a game u typically saw at the arcade. You always would find them at movie theaters.
They were at the theaters long after the left the arcade around here
I played the crap out of this game. I think I finally got good enough to beat it in about 2 dollars in quarters. Lol.
Excellent!
I remember this game! Awesome video Patman!
Thanks Steve
This is easily my favorite arcade game. I still have the PS1 version with the original Namco Guncon just to play sometimes.
It's really good
Legend has it, that you can play as one of the aliens if you can figure out how in the Area 51 game.
Yes I talk about it in the video and show clips
Played this one often
So did I
I never got to beat this game but it was so cool watching this one guy way back use both light guns at the same time and beating the game.
That was the best way to play although it was expensive
Stallone not in? PFFFFF
That arcade game is so nostalgic I played it all the time when I was a kid
Yes it was a lot of fun
Patman always putting the hotties in the thumbnail
Was it that obvious? :-)
“Sgt. Major Marcus Bradley”
No dang sergeant major would ever be in the field, in a combat zone, fighting aliens and zombies lmao
LOL
Finally I subbed with this account. After years watching with my personal one I finally remembered using this one!!!
Now, to the video. (Which I am sure will be great as always)
Such a great game! I didn't play it much in the arcade but I had it for the ps1 and loved it. Great job with the vid and I would love to see another video on the other game. 💪🔥🙌
Thanks a lot
this is a fantastic channel can you do Carnevil next? my dad and I use to go up to the mall and play that game when I was a kid.
Perhaps for Halloween, thanks
Great documentary, you pretty much nailed the entire development cycle.
Coming from the man who created the product that is high praise indeed. Really enjoyed your game and spent countless hours playing it. Thanks so much
Great video! I'd love to see you cover the San Francisco Rush racing games at some point.
Thanks, it's on my list
I love the full-motion video actors in this, it did get to a point of over-saturation with some games, but there's something fun about the whole thing, same with the cutscenes in Command & Conquer. Not sure if it's the same people, but Target Terror is another light gun game that came out that also uses live-action actors, and the pre-rendered graphics look similar, only this one came out in 2004. Might be worth checking out, just for the cheesy fun, haha.
Thanks for the info
Great vid as always, ty! I always loved hearing the screams of the dying aliens across the arcade or movie theater.
LOL, so did I. Thanks
I didn't know "site 4" was a sequel. I think it either used the same cabinet art or similar so I thought it was like a "turbo" or update to the original. Nice history video!
Thanks a lot
I haven't thought about "There is currently a line for Time Crisis" in years! This is a serious blast of nostalgia.
This game is at my local arcade! Play the hell out of them back in the day. Hell of a lot of fun
Yes, I always had fun as well
This games was so much fun. I spent a lot of time trying to find all the secret rooms. I always wondered if it influenced Resident Evil, STAARS vs STARS as well as a few other similarities.
It's entirely possible
I always played both guns too on operation thunderbolt and aerosmiths revolution x
That's the best way to do it
