Aw, so nice to see a lady on here. I've just finished decorating my loft. Last thing to do is caulk the skirting. While I would prefer to have a lovely man do these things for me, I have to do it on my own 😂 UA-cam is great though, fixed a running toilet the other day. Its nice to see I'm not alone on this DIY journey. God bless.
Third times charm. As a woman , I have never even looked at one of these- until I needed one. Your explanation of all the points and opening was great. Thank you.
I'm one of those people who didn't know how to use a caulking gun! I figured out how to put the tube in the gun but that's all. I didn't know about the cutter, I didn't know about the plunger, and I hadn't thought about the plug coming back up into the spout on the next use. So keep on producing those DIY videos for 71-year-old women who have never caulked before. I worked in computers my entire life all over the US and the world. NOW I have time to enjoy some DIY projects in my gorgeous TN mountain retirement home! I was trying to install some lovely cork from AMCORK and they sent me the product, their recommended glue, and the glue gun. They also sent super instructions on preparing the cord, the wall, and how and where to apply their glue. BUT they assumed I knew how to use the glue gun! Thanks to you, now I do know how to use it. FINGERS CROSSED.
I am an grandma trying to do most of my own household maintenance. Thanks for this video. I never used one before and i need to caulk some windows. Now i think i can do it.
Thank you so much for your video. I am a senior lady working on some projects. This video might be very basic for some but it really helped me out. Keep up the good work!
43 year old man here and until today I'd never used a caulking gun - found your video and REALLY appreciated the way you described everything. I'm not a smart man but I can follow directions and this helped me not look like a complete idiot - so thank you very much !
I am a novice he knows nothing about caulking guns. This is a great video. Now I need to learn how to correctly caulk the tile on my fireplace surround. One step at a time. Thanks so much
Thankyou so much for taking the time to show how to use the gun. I had no idea what to do until your tutorial. It’s been great for a complete novice. I can now carry out my project with confidence thanks to you ❤️
Shannon as a first time reno DIYer, every time I look up video's for the next step, if there is one from you (and there practically always is), I go for that one first. Then I watch more and come back to see yours again before I start. Once again, you did not disappoint! Your explanations are so clear and thorough. You have helped me through so much so far and I thank you!!
I knew nothing about caulking or caulking guns. After watching, I'm now confident I know how to buy and use one. Thanks for the simple video for a newbie like myself.
I actually just bought a caulk (well, at least i think so) and i cut the tip of it. The caulk juat wouldn't come out. So i pushed and pushed and nothing came out still....well, i was pishing with my finger. I decided to watch the video....oh my! I need a caulking gun! Jeez. Am i dumb? I have been laughing at myself all day. So I'm off to the home improvement store tomorrow to buy a caulkibg gun. Luckily, i can get one for abt $10.
So glad to find you and especially the tip of releasing the pressure and sealing with duct tape. Great succinct presentation. We old ladies need all the help we can get.
Hi Shannon. There's many people on UA-cam teachings these kind of home building lessons. I have learned the most from you and your style of teaching and the attention to detail you always present is great. So, I just wanted to say thank you.
Keep up the good work. What you do is greatly appreciated. Your very proficient and do this kind of work everyday and may not realize how very helpful you are. Until next time, be well.
This was really helpful. I've never calked anything before. I just bought the stuff and decided to go online and learn how. I'm glad I watched your video first. I feel a lot more prepared now. Thank you!
Thank you Shannon. Now I know not to cut too far back on the spot. I always waste too much caulking/silicone and just make a big mess because too much comes out! Thank you. Stay safe.
Here's a laugh for you Shannon. 72 years old and I've been using caulk guns a LOT of those years. I knew about the seal poker but I never knew there was a spout cutter on the guns. I went out to the garage to check mine and sure enough, there was an ol dirty sticker right there by that hole that said "Spout Cutter" 😁 How bout that!!!
I never knew about the cutter. I watched your video to see how to release a tube that was left in there for years and I don’t know how to get it out. I was about to just go buy another gun, but told myself to watch your video first to see if you mentioned it. You didn’t, but you showed how to put one in, so that gave me a clue on how to do it. I also learned about the cutter, so your video was very useful. Thanks.
When it comes to the different types of caulk guns I do have a preference. Sometimes the construction adhesives can be very thick and require more pressure. The cheap, weaker framed ones will bend or allow the plunger to push the tube out sideways. Having a more ridged frame helps a lot. The trigger grip also can have less strain on your hand with some of the fancier models.
I HAD TROUBLE WITH THAT PART. I HAD TO HAMMER THE NAIL TO BREAK THE SEAL. IT WAS A REAL PAIN. THE WHOLE JOB WAS A REAL PAIN FOR ME ACTUALLY. IM CERTAINLY NO HANDY WOMAN.
- THANKS ! My husband‘s busy with other projects and I wanted to caulk a shed that we have and I told him I would do it so he wouldn’t have to. He just gave me a quick rundown how to use it, but I was not confident enough starting so I thought I better find a video before I made a huge mess. SO HELPFUL! Thank you !!!
Regarding trying to preserve an unfinished tube of caulk - one tip given to me was to let a little excess caulk out of the nozzle and then smooth around the end with a little bead. It then dries out and seals the nozzle. When you go back to it you sort of just pick the excess caulk and the bead off from the nozzle and it pulls out the bit inside that has also dried. Doesnt always work perfectly but I think it works just as well as any other method and its the quickest and easiest way I have found to do it.
Thank you for your video. I have never used a caulk gun, and your video was extremely helpful. I'm planning on caulking around the bathtub and the kitchen sink, and I want to get the best and easiest caulking gun, so there is less chance of messing up. Your video taught me a lot! Thanks again.
I spent about 15 minutes trying to “unscrew” the plunger which was a slow process. I find this video and Shannon mentions the release button. I could have save myself 15 minutes of wasted time if I had searched for this video before attempting to use the gun. Thank you Shannon for uploading such a helpful video.
Great video! I'm brand new to DIY home repair, and so many people who make these videos have forgotten what it's like, that moment when you have everything you need in front of you and you're all excited to get to work, but then your progress is thwarted early on in the project by some tiny step for which you can't get a straight answer! So you watch 27 UA-cam video explanations looking for that "missing link" of information, trying to keep up motivation to do the project at all, but eventually give up because in every video, the experts take for granted that one thing you need to know but as a novice, you don't know! No? Just me? lolol Thank you for showing everything from start to finish about how to use a caulking gun! 😃
I have difficulty with the clear silicone caulk drying up all the time. And nothing seems to stop that. I'm glad you confirmed it too. The only way to get around this is if you have many window panes to replace at once or sink basins to caulk using all of the same tube on the same day or so.
You don't understand how much this helped me! Couldn't figure out how to move the plunger then I thought my tube was too big until I put the base in first. Thanks!!!
Excellent video sir, very helpful for me since I'm about to use these things for the 1st time in my opening battle against the Carpenter bees that have garrisoned themselves in the unpainted wood that makes up my deck.
Thanks for video. Didn't know about tube cutter or release before you reach end of bead. I saw a video where you cut off finger on vinyl glove, put it over end of tube, tape it and squeeze until finger is full so caulking doesn't dry up.
You showed everything I needed to know about a caulking gun and your presentation style is entertaining as well. Enjoyed the blooper for this video! Please always include the bloopers, it adds entertainment value to your video.
You learn something everyday.. like the tube cutter and the seal poker.. wow.. all these years and never knew about those.. cheap is cheap as always and the cheaper ones will bend and lock up in the handle if you have to squeeze hard to get a lump out of the caulking.. the know-it-alls will always criticize your work or methods because their way is always the best lol..never mind them.. !!! .. my little tip is always wet your finger before smoothing out the bead of caulking especially if its right in view like a bathtub or sink.. thanks for taking the time for making informative and helpful videos brother, keep em coming !!!
You’re the first man who mentions puncturing inside the nozzle! Unfortunately I got frustrated because nothing was coming out and I cut the whole a little bigger which was a mistake I think. Then I watched your video and you mentioned it. Hopefully my caulking won’t be too wide. Thanks for mentioning it.
I recently found your channel. I have watched a couple of your videos. I think you are a really great instructor and I appreciate your videos very much. I lived in Alaska for 25 years and consider all Canadians as neighbors. You are wonderful neighbors. I mean this is a really complimentary way, I admire your accent! LOL. I was thinking why would I want to watch a video about caulk guns...Oh wait it's house improvements, I'll watch. Dude is the best at explaining even simple things.
how much pressure on the trigger, one needs to apply for scooting out the silicon material from the tube. I had a very tough time and ended up damaging the gun trigger handle. And hot little scoots of material.
Thank you for the video. My first time using a caulk gun. I could not get the sealant out. Simple but many of us do not know what to do. Simple once you teach us. :)😊
Just like the other comment, i never knew what that hole was for. (Wasn't labeled). I'm 74, been doing this for 50+ yrs. I just use my utility knife! Thanks for teaching us !! We are never too old to learn!
I am so grateful for this video. I'm unfamiliar with tools, and I know this is a really basic one, but I felt really stupid trying even to start to use it. I was too embarrassed to admit that and ask for a demonstration. Thank you for understanding that all tools deserve respect and responsibility while using no matter the size and simplicity. ❤
Thank you for making this video, i feel a bit silly having to search for this info but i am attempting to do some projects around my farm on my own so this is greatly appreciated, this is why i do love UA-cam 😊
Your Blooper moment is me like every minute, and that is why I don't do videos, lol. I have a lot of respect for people like you who put together good videos and make it look so easy. An older guy once bought a barrel drum from me, for the purpose of making a rain barrel, but had no idea how, and my explanations didn't make sense to him, so I agreed to make a video of the next one I make. I found myself having to record the same parts over and over again because I kept having brain farts, constantly hesitating, totally forgetting what to call the simplest of pieces, or just giving a different name all together (like, calling a "hole saw" a "hole punch", lol. After that one video, I told myself never again, lol. It's been several years since I last used a caulking gun, and this was a great refresher while learning new tips before my new project, thank you.
Thanks. As a non professional, my biggest problem is always trying to find a way to seal up my caulking tubes so that they are ready to go again when next required, which can be several months. I will definitely give the tap a shot as I have nothing to lose
Thank you! I didn't know there was a sealant film inside, I kept pumping the gun and nothing would come out. I also didn't know about the hole to cut the tip. Thank you again!
My Caulking Gun was stock up with the sealant on it but upon watching this I applied the same pressure I did but with convictions and it releases the sealant. Thanks to you. The only problem now is the dry silicon because I only consume half of it and it hardened now.
Thank you ever so much! We tried squeezing a tube, but it’s hard on arthritic hands. We didn’t know what kind of gun to buy or anything. This beginner video is so important. Thank you ever so much.
I didn't know anything about this and I decided to take a little lesson about it and found an amazing instructor so I hope there will be no mo secret for me. BIG THANKS 😊
I am a single mother I had to caulk my kitchen sink I didn’t have the slightest idea before on how to do it or what to buy I could do the job just watching your video you are a great teacher I Thank you So Much♥️
This was a very useful video for me. I need to seal some stuff and was close to chuck the cartridge gun (that’s how it’s called in Australia), in the bin🤣. Thanks again for posting this.
Thank you for all of the detailed, thoroughly presented information. Unfortunately one of the main things about the caulking gun is that there needs to be pressure pushing on the caulking itself so it will come out. That little spring loaded thing doesn't automatically stay tight. I know there's something that needs to be done but I can't remember what it is, and whatever it is you didn't cover it in this video. I am still unable to use my caulking gun. Will keep searching for more info... Maybe you can upload a new video with that information in it? Thank you
That was exactly my question! On my gun the tube does not stay snug in the cage. The tube is constantly moving around inside the cage. I suppose I should just buy a new gun.
@@tsilveira5866 It isn't the gun (possibly) I had the same problem the two times I used mine and just fiddled around with it until it finally locked in place. I have no idea what I did right and how I did it!
So many of us single ladies appreciate videos like this to keep us independent and proud of our accomplishments. Thank you so much

Thank you. It is difficult to find BEGINNER VIDEOS. Great job. I appreciate that you assume the viewer knows nothing about caulking guns, a rarity.
Still relevant! Using caulking gun for the first time as new homeowner, thanks so much!

Well the caulking gun seems like a pretty simple tool but it to has secrets.
yeah I'm going to check mine out tomorrow, never knew of this either!
LOL I did the same thing and low and behold. A sticker that said spout cutter right on the side smh. Thanks bro
I’ll be dam im 67 and just checked mine there it was lol

A screw works beautifully to seal the tip for future use. Just make sure it's as wide or wider than the tip opening.

Thanks for this. I am about to use mine and your video is well done.👍!!! Upvote for you.
Thank you ever so much! We tried squeezing a tube, but it’s hard on arthritic hands. We didn’t know what kind of gun to buy or anything. This beginner video is so important. Thank you ever so much.
Thank you! I needed this information because I had no idea how to use this caulking gun. Very helpful information.
I didn't know anything about this and I decided to take a little lesson about it and found an amazing instructor so I hope there will be no mo secret for me.
BIG THANKS 😊
I am a single mother I had to caulk my kitchen sink I didn’t have the slightest idea before on how to do it or what to buy I could do the job just watching your video you are a great teacher I Thank you So Much♥️
Great video! I need to caulk my tub and saw the guns too. Had no idea how useful they are. Thanks!
Thanks
Thank you very much.
This was a very useful video for me. I need to seal some stuff and was close to chuck the cartridge gun (that’s how it’s called in Australia), in the bin🤣. Thanks again for posting this.
Thanks for the video Shannon, great as always.. 👍👍
Wasn't aware of the tip cutting hole, I will have to look at mine to see if they have such
Always learn something new from you, your the best 👍
Thank you for all of the detailed, thoroughly presented information. Unfortunately one of the main things about the caulking gun is that there needs to be pressure pushing on the caulking itself so it will come out. That little spring loaded thing doesn't automatically stay tight. I know there's something that needs to be done but I can't remember what it is, and whatever it is you didn't cover it in this video. I am still unable to use my caulking gun. Will keep searching for more info...
Maybe you can upload a new video with that information in it? Thank you
sometimes the rod gets worn and you need to rotate it a little to get a better grip
I just learned how to use the caulk gun from you. Very informative. Thanks!
Always learning something new from your channel. Thanks!
Easy and informative tutorial for a beginner. Thanks!
Thank you my first time re-doing my kitchen counter top.🙋♀️👍 Stay safe.
I did not know about releasing thr back pressure BEFORE finishing the bead. Good video
Thank you, just what I needed.
" This video is about how to use the gun " And I sure do appreciate it!
