I had never heard this song until about 6 months after the divorce.
This song is such a punch in the gut. That first verse just stabbed me and put into words a feeling I’d known for years.
Add in the line, “I don’t know what you loved in me. Maybe the picture of somebody you hoped I would be…”

I've been there at different times and oddly enuff u learn the Wizard was right when he told Travis, "u gotta find something to put ur energy into bcuz more or less we're all fucked." Focus ur disillusionment in the right direction bcuz like Iris we all need to be saved.

All the words had all been spoken
And somehow the feeling still wasn't right
And still we continued on through the night
Tracing our steps from the beginning
Until they vanished into the air
Trying to understand how our lives had led us there
    Looking hard into your eyes
There was nobody I'd ever known
Such an empty surprise to feel so alone
Now, for me some words come easy
But I know that they don't mean that much
Compared with the things that are said when lovers touch
You never knew what I loved in you
I don't know what you loved in me
Maybe the picture of somebody you were hoping I might be
    Awake again, I can't pretend
And I know I'm alone and close to the end
    Of the feeling we've known
How long have I been sleeping?
How long have I been drifting alone through the night?
How long have I been dreaming I could make it right?
If I closed my eyes and tried with all my might
To be the the one you need
    Awake again, I can't pretend
And I know I'm alone and close to the end
    Of the feeling we've known
How long have I been sleeping?
How long have I been drifting alone through the night?
How long have I been running for that morning flight?
Through the whispered promises and the changing light
Of the bed where we both lie
    Late for the sky

Like many, I tended to consider the relationship between Travis and Iris to be the cynosure of the film.
What you have done with your edit puts the focus on the love story of the film by using the most amazingly, painfully, beautiful music featured. That added a dimension to both the movie and the song that made me think deeply.
Very good work, you should feel proud.
Edit: after screening this several more times, I long for the scene in the coffee shop to be added; where Travis explains his right to ask her out, and she sweetly confesses her feelings.

Travis blew it. He took the girl who gave him a fair chance to a porno movie...a vile bottom of the barrel porno. He earned her contempt by his ignorance and lack of higher values. Then he quit under the guise of trying to save Iris. This is no love story...this is despair.

JB wrote the song when he was 16- he knew nothing of life other than to write down a bunch of words that rhyme and fit them together...it really doesn't say all that much. Maybe just the picture of a song you were hoping it might be?

@@nunyabizzness8 I don’t think Travis knew how to treat a woman. I don’t think he’d ever had a relationship, he was genuinely sorry when he saw how much he had upset and offended Betsy.
He’s a young man that has seen the horrors of Vietnam. He’s now left with chronic insomnia, paranoia, no friends. He just doesn’t know how to act around people, he doesn’t fit in anywhere as far as I can tell.

@@marks497 Fair point- but I never saw him accept, admit or learn from his mistakes... and then he turned darker. AS far as the Viet Nam thing-I wonder if there are more cases of PTSD during and after "unjust" wars? Every soldier must face complicated demons of what they did, were told to do, and why? It can't be effectively avoided. He self-sabotaged the date on some level as a result. That said...I encourage all who sympathize with the character to venture to the next level (the one that eluded Travis). Calling this a love story is silly....it's about loneliness, avoidance, PTSD, and the dark process of twisting the truth to make it tolerable.

Amazing Gene Siskel thought this film would have a happy ending when he sat down to review it. America was self administering Amnesia in various forms. So when De Niro walks into the office the audience at the time notices nothing distinguishing about Travis's jacket. Scorsese is subtle "Marines....me too." We see the VC Flag. We see the attack posture vs Albert Brooks...then the tension builds. The Wizard scene tells us that something is up but WHAT. Easy Andy is the turning point in terms of implied threat to credible threat. Betsy & Iris are the Catalysts of course. Late for the Sky-Taxi Driver is in the top ten for song to soundtrack.

    Michael McLoughlin
I was driving a cab in N.Y.C.when they filmed this movie.
Going down 2nd Ave. one night I saw a Checker cab on blocks.
Surrounded by Klieg lights & police barricades.
So iI stopped at the barricade & a cop told me what was going on.
I'd never heard of Robert DeNiro before.
But when the movie came out I thought him & the whole movie was great.
I really indentified with the driver-I'd go to any neighborhood at any time.
That was the job & the way you made money; But you saw alot of shit going on at
that time & at times it got to me too.
I started feeling as if I was doing God's work. You get close to the edge often.
It's easy to understand going over it.

    Lyrics:
All the words had all been spoken
And somehow the feeling still wasn't right
And still we continued on through the night
Tracing our steps from the beginning
Until they vanished into the air
Trying to understand how our lives had led us there
    Looking hard into your eyes
There was nobody I'd ever known
Such an empty surprise to feel so alone
Now, for me some words come easy
But I know that they don't mean that much
Compared with the things that are said when lovers touch
You never knew what I loved in you
I don't know what you loved in me
Maybe the picture of somebody you were hoping I might be
    Awake again, I can't pretend
And I know I'm alone and close to the end
    Of the feeling we've known
How long have I been sleeping?
How long have I been drifting alone through the night?
How long have I been dreaming I could make it right?
If I closed my eyes and tried with all my might
To be the the one you need
    Awake again, I can't pretend
And I know I'm alone and close to the end
    Of the feeling we've known
How long have I been sleeping?
How long have I been drifting alone through the night?
How long have I been running for that morning flight?
Through the whispered promises and the changing light
Of the bed where we both lie
    Late for the sky
And then Robert in the end says "So long huh"!

The only way this pastiche could have been improved upon, would have been to include the jarring - reversed cymbal - "double take" into the rear view mirror, at the end; indicating that his underlying pathology, "still remains."

If Travis just had been able to show off his well-trained body and gone to see some mainstream movie like Jaws, he would have not only f-cked Cybill Shepherd's hot character but also would have become a normal decent middle-aged man...
    That's my take.
