  • There's a HUGE shift happening in the 3D community and it all starts with Blender! More and more artists are discovering just how powerful this free, open-source, software is and making the switch from expensive suites like Cinema 4D and Zbrush, to Blender. Today we're going to talk about the most useful features of Blender, what it's capable of, and why artists are using Blender for 3d animation, 2d animation, compositing VFX, rendering, modeling, sculpting, and so much more! This software is packed with features and hopefully, by the end of this video, you'll have a clear understanding as to whether or not learning Blender is worth it for you!

I started Blender in 2010, with 2.49 version. At that time, specially with the 2.5 version, I felt that Blender was the future. More than 10 years later I'm even more certain of that.

Same here - I dabbled off and on preferring the updated UI to the original.
What finally forced me to come to grips, (and fall in love w/Blender), was when HardOPs and BoxCutter were released! I just HAD TO HAVE that hard surface modeling workflow!
      I haven’t looked back since!
With the CAD modeling addons in the works, I’m hoping to be able to eventually drop Fusion 360 as well, for my hobbyist 3D printing endeavors!

I'm sure people thought that even before that. But I felt the same, and I started around 2.5, or 2.7, don't remember. I’m using 3dsmax solely because it can translate Solidworks to fbx files that I can use in Sketchfab and Twinmotion. If Blender could do that I would take the time to learn it. One of the many things I like about Blender, is that it's so gloriously stable compared to a lot of other well established open source software. It is quiet rare for it to crash, and also very rare to run into more minor bugs that won't necessarily cause a crash.
One area I wish Blender would work on however, is the image texture painting. It's still capable of basics, but it's not well polished like other features out of the box.
And I have run into some annoying bugs when painting a model, like the brush being unable to paint a certain bit of geometry for no apparent reason, but only when the camera is within a certain range of angles. I can usually get around it by finding a different angle, but it takes trial and error to move the camera around and find an angle that works for both the brush stroke I want to use, and that doesn't run into the bug. This breaks my work flow, slowing me down, and is just plain frustrating.
So anyway. I hope texturing gets some TLC.

Great breakdown, like many others I started on Max, then moved to Maya for a few years, and now have been trying Blender off and on, trying to get upto speed for production. My personal experience is I find the modeling toolset in Blender much more robust, then plug in some addons and it goes into nitro mode - love it! If I had to compare one aspect with Maya, I would say the UV editor could use improvement - coming from Maya I find the UV editor there pretty powerful and would love Blender to have a more solid toolset for UVs as right now it seems to be a little lacking.
However, I also prefer the material/shader system in Blender and the realtime rendering features of Eevee are so damn cool. The fact that we get this all for free is a godsend. With the advent of new hair systems as well, Blender will only get better and better. Will likely see more and more artists move from Autodesk products, hopefully more studios will pick Blender up in the near future.

This is changing pretty fast with WB Animation studios and Weta FX among others having job listings where experience with blender is now part of the prerequisites especially for 3D modellers/sculptors and it will become more and more common in the future.
Also most studios have internal proprietary tools and plugins that you actually can not know in advance and that simplify the workflow A LOT that you learn when you start working at the studio.
If you want to have a solid base that covers most things I would recommend Blender , Nuke and Houdini and learning Python knowing your way around those (not necessarily mastering them)

This is super important to understand, I think. Not just with Blender but any software/toolkit with a huge capacity and so many features. If people want to get working with something like Blender, I'd recommend maybe doing a couple introductory tutorials just to get a rough feel for the UI then dive into trying to make something.
Everyone is different, but I find if I try to go all in on the learning and try to understand every possible tool in Blender, Photoshop or most recently Unreal, I end up bogged down with hundreds of tutorials with no payoff. Just info overload.
Just try making something. A model, a scene, a short clip, whatever you want just give it a shot. You'll struggle, it'll take forever, you won't know how to do it but that's fine! Pick up tutorials, documentation or tips for each challenge as they come the move on to your next problem. I find it funny when people compare Blender to Maya, Houdini, or other expensive software out there arguing that those program are better. I mean, of course they are. They invest millions of dollars into their software. They should be top notch; however, what makes Blender gain a special place into people's heart, is that Blender has an amazing set of tools and capabilities that can rival those from other expensive software. And Blender does it with a lower budget and with the help of the amazing community behind it. This is why Blender is considered to be among the best software by artist around the world including me. I acknowledge that other software out there may have certain tools that are "better" or have a "better performance". I, myself, invested on zbrush to texture my characters, but like I said, that is just expected. With millions of dollars on the line, it would be a shame if these other programs could not deliver something relatively better. Believe me, if Blender optimizes the polycount and allows the subdivision of models to go higher like in zbrush, I would stop using zbrush right away (even though I paid for it).

Geometry nodes instances don't interact with physics, force fields or collisions, cannot communicate with particles to query a particle lifetime for instance. In C4D you can use a cloner on a cube, put a rigid body tag on that cube and it will automatically enable physics on each clone. So, no Blender isn't at the C4D level when it comes to motion graphics yet. Blender can do a lot of everything but C4D is still superior when it comes to procedural animations. But hey, Blender is free. I say that as a Blender artist myself. Blender has a long way to go to compete with C4D.

Blender UI runs on the same thread as most processing, so it freezes during operations. Adding custom buttons and toolbars are mostly done with short python scripts, though I'm sure that could be made easier, yes. In the rendering field, inclusion and exclusion of objects from lights can be done depending on what you want exactly, exclude just shadows / reflections / refractions / specific rays ?

What it can do is amazing, provided you can figure it out. Almost every tutorial I watch has a point where it tells you to click on such-and-such, which I can't because it's not there anymore, or won't appear if you didn't start by doing something they didn't tell you you needed, etc. The interface is needlessly difficult, clearly written by coders for other coders, and not for normal people...there's no reason why it should be necessary to plug a dozen nodes together in order to make light pass through glass, when that should simply be a default setting. Someone needs to come in and do a "common sense" pass on the interface.
    But hey, it's free.

I realize that everyone’s experience is valid, so I can’t say you’re wrong, but my experience has been the complete opposite. I’m not sure what other artistic software you’ve used, but I’ve dabbled in dozens of programs for more than a decade and haven’t come across anything remotely as user friendly as Blender. I started using it about 2 years ago and I now use it for things I’d normally do in other programs, just because it’s so customizable and has so many quality of life features.
Yes, you’re going to have many times where you don’t know how to do the thing you want to do, but that’s not unique to Blender. That’s comes with any software, especially the more tools it comes with, and Blender is absolutely loaded with tools.
In case you haven’t tried any of these things, here are a few of my suggestions:
      1) Take some time to study the basic hotkeys of your preferred workflow.
      2) Watch/buy a couple lengthy tutorials. They might time a few days or weeks to get through, but you’ll come other the other side with a much more efficiently workflow.
      3) Add Stack Overflow to your bookmarks. Go there to find answers to questions you have, or ask a questions if no one has made a post before. I’d even suggest reading questions and their answers, just to learn some things you probably didn’t know.
      4) If you think some things could be more clear, then make a detailed list and come with some solutions, then go about trying to get them implemented. This is why Blender is open source, after all.
Or, maybe it’s just not for you. If that’s the case, I hope you find something that works for you.

So true. And they did that pass for 2.8 and it still has long to go.
But hey. It’s free as you said and they are going in the right direction now finally

@@maxleveladventures See, here's the thing: I expect not to know how to do things at first. I've watched plenty of tutorials...every single time I try something new, I watch tutorials on it. The problem is that after I do that, I usually still can't make the thing work. About nine out of ten times they reach a point where I'm told to check some box or click on some menu that simply isn't there, or I'm told I should see some effect happen that doesn't happen even a little bit. I've spent much of today trying to get some swaying trees. In not one case has the program performed the way the tutorial described. I just watched one on creating your own trees, and got to about step two, where they said "You should see a new menu down in the left had bottom corner." I agree, I should see that, but it's not there. What do I do then, yell at it? THAT sort of behavior, in my experience, IS pretty unique to Blender. I edit video for a living, and I've never seen a more scatterbrained program in my life. Every once in a while, I'll find a comment under the video mentioning that if you don't start by setting the such-and-such to this-or-that the whole thing won't work, but sadly, more often than not I just have to move on and try to find another one that hopefully is clearer in its instructions, and then hope that Blender cooperates.
As far as coming up with solutions goes, I'm not sure what you mean. I'm not a programmer. I can suggest things like "Make light pass through glass by default," or "It would be spiffy if that menu actually DID appear in the corner," but I couldn't write code for it if my life was on the line. If it didn't make such realistic images, I'd just walk away from it altogether, but 3D programs are so complicated that I just don't have the patience to start over from scratch yet again.

I was a Maya power user, had been using Maya when it used to be owned by alias. I switched to Blender when 2.8+ came out and never looked back. It has already a lot of good built-in addons. I also found some extra addons so I could still have the hokeys like maya so it has the best of both worlds being more affordable and imo just overall faster and more efficient.
I'm not some company that needs massive amount of licenses that provide 24/7 support or stuck in an archaic workflow pipeline that requires 3ds or or maya so its pretty pointless to pay for them when I can do better work in Blender with the amazing tools it offers. Already many AAA studios are supporting the blender foundation, its only a matter of time until Maya and 3ds will hopefully have a smaller market and can't charge dumb prices for subscription only offerings of their product. I'm not fan of renting my software.

I was looking into blender because I wanted to get into 3D art and making BJD's. I've been wanting to do this for a few years but didn't know where to start. I got a recommendation for Blender on reddit and its far more advanced then I thought it was. I'm overwhelmed but I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun.
