  • How to fix a running toilet.
    1. Check the chain (if your toilet has one) it may be too long and getting caught under flap, or too short and the flap can't close.
    2. Check the flapper (may be worn out or has cracks, you can replace for under $5).
    3. Check the the water level and overflow. Is the water level too high?
    4. Adjust float to lower level of water.

    Thank you! I’ve taken over the water bill and I was wondering why it was so high... a running toilet. This saved me a visit from the plumber and money every month.

    We had two bad toilets that keeps on going, but my looking on UA-cam, I could not find the same interior toilet not until I came across your video.I got up and used the one downstairs, but i could hear the one up stairs running really bad, so after watching your video both were fixed, and it is 6 O'clock in the morning. Thank you, so much for the early morning fix!

    You rock, girl! Guys sometimes make a big 15-minute This Old House type production out it, but you showed me how turning a simple screw could stop that infernal running toilet noise. And it only took 3 minutes. Thanks!

      Jay Mac Thanks so much for the great feedback! I'm sure some people hear a girl's voice and automatically change to a new video. I'm glad my simple tutorial helped you fix it!

    Omg thank you so much! It was my chain. Somehow it moved and needed to be lowered like you stated. I watched a few videos and that issue wasn't mentioned. I tested the toilet twice now and I'm good to go. Thank you so much!

    For me, one of two things happen: 1. I'll adjust it so that the water level is below the overflow tube, then the toilet won't refill when I flush it, or 2. I'll adjust it, so they the water is level with the top of the overflow tube. Then, of course, the toilet will keep running.

    I have the same type of toilet (Mansfield), The flapper seems to be just fine but I've adjusted that screw for the float like playing with an old fashioned carburetor and damned if it still leaks the tiniest amount of water still in the bowl. If I turn the screw too far (down) it shuts off the water flow. In addition the float arm has an adjustable piece midway down the arm (it's two pieces) that you can raise or lower the float end. Still no good. I'm torn between either calling a plumber or digging a straddle trench in the back yard like in my old Marine Corps days.

    Thank you for the video. what if the toilet flapper isn't always suctioning and causing the toilet to constantly run?

    • @HandmadebyHaley
      @HandmadebyHaley  7 років тому +1

      Senica Lee You will need to get a new flapper or adjust it so that it is getting a firm seal.

    My toilet bowl has a constant small stream running down into the water from the very front of the toilet bowl. It never used to do this.. My b/f changed the flapper. Still no improvement, in fact now he messed with chain length and it gets stuck and runs in the tank loud, lots, and without ceasing until I jiggle the handle. He is out of the picture. I have to figure this out and fix it myself.

  • @voyeurette1
    @voyeurette1 5 років тому

    I did put in a new flapper. It is dropping okay and seems to seal. I lifted the bulb and the front stream stopped for now. I guess next I will try the screwdriver. Do I turn it counter or clockwise. Boyfriend says he lowered bulb about a 1/4 inch. As I said it got worse and now runs intermittently long and hard. I checked the chain and it was not caught. Next time it runs that will be the first thing I look at. Thank you.

    • @HandmadebyHaley
      @HandmadebyHaley  5 років тому

      Counter clockwise. Good luck! I'm sure you will figure it out as you keep troubleshooting!

    that worked for me about a week ago on one flush. I turned off the toilet valve until could decide what to first. now flows even with the toilet valve off so then I had to turn off the main water valve to the whole house... what did I do wrong?

    Good tutorial - I know my toilet works like this on the inside. The problem is there’s a built-in counter that goes over the back of my toilet connected all the way across to my whole sink vanity (stupid condo builder!), and I’m pretty sure that I can’t get a screw driver to that screw. I have to check. My toilet is 27 years old, so maybe I need to replace the whole inner workings?? Bonus that it’s a video from a woman!! 👍🏻

      Check out this tool! Should fix your problem! And thanks for your comment! I often worry people dont trust me as much with home repair videos because I'm a woman. But I keep hearing great feedback. I should add more videos! www.lowes.com/pd/craftsman-3-piece-steel-handle-multi-bit-screwdriver-set/1000596621?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-tol-_-google-_-lia-_-216-_-screwdrivers-_-1000596621-_-0&store_code=2293&placeholder=null&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=Cj0KCQiAsbrxBRDpARIsAAnnz_OJS45cNezR2lezSkLOrcvfIBAjDhSC-aIsd3j5jY5OKkeewJF9Ya4aAgJSEALw_wcB

    What do you think might be wrong with a toilet that runs only intermittently when the water is full? That is my issue? Thanks.

    • @HandmadebyHaley
      @HandmadebyHaley  5 років тому

      So it's only happening occasionally? I go through the troubleshooting steps on here. I would guess the chain is maybe getting caught sometimes or the seal needs to be replaced.

    • @nevadawolf619
      @nevadawolf619 5 років тому

      HanDIY Tutorials I think it might be the seal because it happens throughout the night, then stops and then starts again after an hour or so. Thanks again.
