    Hiya Folks! Apologies for the delay, but I felt I needed to go a bit extra for the finale! The culminating moment Arthas becomes the Lich King is Warcraft’s most iconic scene. I edited quite a few parts, trying to fix things here and there, as best I could. It’s a dream of mine to one day see a full-fledged movie covering Arthas’ story from Crown Prince Paladin of the Alliance to Lich King bent on scourging the world. Hopefully Blizzard makes one in the future and does it well.
    In summary, Warcraft 3 as a whole is testament to the creativity & passion of the original developers and gave birth to the phenomenon known as WoW and its multiple expansions. Again, Reforged is NOWHERE near what it could’ve been as shown in 2018, but it was a “decent” graphical update, and a nice way to replay & deliver the lore of Warcraft 3 to you guys. Hopefully most of you enjoyed it. I could use a rest, after playing 8+ campaigns and editing videos for each. Looking forward to Shadowlands, and hope it’s on par with (or hopefully surpasses) Legion.

    • @Hust91
      @Hust91 2 роки тому +13

      @@Servellion I wanted a WoW season that was more like a Warcraft 3 campaign, with the players part of enormous armies. With a desperate struggle as the legions of undead basically successfully invade the rest of the world with only a small glimmer of hope from some factor that to The Lich King would be new and unexpected, such as sorcery or technology brought by the Draenei, or demonic knowledge or technology retrieved from the Burning Crusade. If Arthas/Ner'zhul the Farseer who sees through time was to be defeated, it should not have been by him being a secretly suicidal idiot who can't predict that bringing in a bunch of players to face him in single combat was incredibly risky. And of course that Ner'zhul actually be fused with Arthas in such a way that Arthas does not have the ability to get rid of him, since Ner'Zhul's farsight would forewarn him of such a possibility.
      Or don't defeat him in WoW at all and instead make a movie or separate game better suited for such grand stories that can be ended in ways other than the villain bailing on villainy.
      That he kills the raid matters little since he still decided to allow them to slaughter their way through all his most important forces and get close enough to him to deliver a killing blow.
      You beat a world conquering threat by bringing strategic advantages they don't see coming. Maybe a grand ritual like the one Illidan did to summon the entire Frozen Throne out of Northrend altogether like they did Dalaran, or crashing a piece of the Draenei city into its side, a move born of desperation as they cannot fight the undead hordes face to face, so they try to circumvent it.

      @@velenvskaelhas What do you mean? I’ve never heard that before.
      If you only go by episode 1-3, he’s gradually falling from potential greatness to darkness, through both circumstance, like losing his mother, and manipulation by Palpatine. Whatever darkness he had in him to begin with is nothing more than any other human has to overcome?
      The difference is what he went through that led him down a path which nourished things like fear, anger, hate and suffering. Everything Yoda warned Anakin about in Episode 1 turned into his entire life, because he always had fear of losing those he loved, thanks to never letting go.
      It certainly didn’t help telling him he was special, because that only made him believe he should have been able to save anyone. And so he blamed Obi-Wan and the Jedi for «holding him back», when he lost his mother.
      Jedi and Palpatine are both to blame for his downfall, but Anakin himself made the choices that eventually turned him evil.
      He was obviously flawed from the beginning, but I’d say not much more than anyone else. What he went through and the choices he made turned him evil, not the other way around.

    Common misconception, Arthas doesn't actually kill Illidan on the mountain. He defeats him and Illidan is forced to retreat. The original devs gave an interview and said that their biggest regret was not making the fight between Arthas and Illidan a true cut scene in the original game. Since they did it in the normal game mode they were locked into the death animation for Ilidans character so everyone assumed Illidan died and then they were all up in arms when it was announced that Illidan would be the final boss of Black Temple during TBC.

    After it broke the lashes of Kil'jaeden, Lich King became self-aware. This all-knowing being completed its plans and threw Frostmourne out of its frozen cage in order the sword to come back to his master. The two breaking points in this story are Arthas' finding Frostmourne and coming back to the throne.
    Frostmourne's power is to capture souls. Its first scar was upon Arthas' soul. The moment he grabbed the blade, the human Prince Arthas Menethil was no more. The ''champion'' of Lich King was born. Because Lich King dominated Prince Arthas Menethil's mind first. Frostmourne was an extension of it and the blade was now his champion. I can never blame Arthas after he grabbed the sword. He became just a shell at that point.
    In this story, Prince Arthas isn't the villain; he is the victim. My favourite scene is during the champion climbs the stairs. The human, Arthas is almost entirely gone and the only things he can hear now are his worst deeds, his closest victims. It begins with Uther's council to him ''...turn to bloodlust, we would become as savage as the vile orcs...'' And after his last bit of conscience screams everything at Arthas, the last thing he remembers is ''...your young prince will find only death in the cold north...'' Later, death and terror comes from north.
    The main villain of this story, Lich King is a beautiful characterization and really good depiction of ''The man who sits above all else''. Its location is on one of the most difficult geographical areas with harshest climates. It sits at the top of the highest tower. Even getting such a place is an issue for an army. Controlling everything from a throne is a nice concept of a dictator. And with the two powers of soul capturing and dominating, you can be a really powerful being.

      Erm... If I didn't remember wrongly when I played the old Burning Legion, Arthas took the sword willingly. He even killed a Mountain King who tried to stop him from getting Frostmourne, because the Mountain King actually read the "instructions" on the sword or the tablet near the sword and know that the sword is a cursed sword. By that time, Arthas had already been corrupted in both mind and soul, fueled by his desire for revenge against the Undead Scourge, only to be consumed by it. So he is by no means a victim.
      According to what I can still remember, Arthas was a Paladin that was sent on a mission to investigate or stop the Scourge from spreading in a city. The Necromancer, under orders from Lich King, kept egging Arthas on. Turning his people into zombies right in front of him, spreading the plague and turning a whole city into zombies right in front of him. The Necromancer kept luring and taunting Arthas deeper and deeper into Blighted Lands and nearer to Frostmourne while letting him witness more and more atrocities, all to fuel the rage and hatred in Arthas. When Arthas ordered an entire city to be purged, that was when he started his fall from grace as a Paladin. The time when had completely fallen was when he murdered his friend the Mountain King in order to get the sword for power to get revenge against The Necromancer.
      The Lich King Ner'Zhul chose Arthas as his champion and his new body right from the very start with the omniscience ability he gained by becoming the Lich King, but ultimately in the end, Arthas was the one who made his choices and chose his path in life. If Arthas did not give into the desire for revenge, he would still be a Paladin, quite possibly married Archmage Jenna and had taken over his father's kingdom as King instead.

    I am actually still tilted they did Arthas like that. Out of all the characters to redeem, they don't choose Arthas. The one dude that CARRIED THE FRANCHISE. Imagine against the jailor, Arthas became the key to defeating them. Maybe he's the last bit of strength to kill the Jailer. And maybe somewhere along the line his old self returns, where he remembers what it was like to be a paladin--to love and protect the innocent. And through a final sacrifice, saves all of Azeroth like he always wanted from the very start. That IMO would have gone over amazingly with the fanbase, since the last thing they have shown to dislike was girl power Sylvannas.

So much more potential to finish the Arc of Arthas. However, for me it should not have been a happy one. Sometimes characters in fiction are no longer able to be redeemed.
      Also the way Sylvanas was redeemed was also too cheap.

    • @ВладиславШаклеин-ч7м
      @ВладиславШаклеин-ч7м 2 роки тому

      What exactly did he do to deserve redemption? Arthas has shown himself a ruthless fanatic stepping over dead bodies for his own selfish reasons even before becoming a Deathknight, and for all the crap you give Sylvanas - at least she *was* a good person in life. And all that happened aftetwards has little meaning, since virtually anything he could do can be attributed to corruption and influence, rather than being his own doing.
      Put down your pink glasses and grow the fuck up. Even Garrosh has way more depth than Arthas as this point.

      Idk why would you need to redeem Arthas at all, his story was a masterpiece.
      this was during early 2000 where "rebellious phase" is the trend. young Arthas underwent a really good phase, and most of the players playing, probably relate with Arthas' story. his naivety/innocence actually killed him. he was forced to turn his back on humans he wanted to protect, he also tried to kill every undead he doesn't like (killing their leader would make him the leader) while accepting that he is also an undead.
      it's highly similar to kerrigan's story when she was reborn as a zerg queen (she was also betrayed by her superiors, tried to eliminate the head of the zergs and took the crown for hers alone)

For the second we could have his whole campaign where he wreaks havoc over Lordaeron, invades Quel'thalas (whole movie arc on its own), fights Sylvanas, rezzes Kel'thuzad and ascending as the Lich King. Then as the third, we could focus on WoTLK’s story, Battle of Light's Hope, Wrathgate Tragendy, with climax as justice is brought to Icecrown itself, wrapping everything up beautifully. (Death Knights at Light’s Hope chapel, Tirion and the Argent Crusade, Jaina coping with her past love, the return of Varian, his childhood friend). Truly believe it'd a masterpiece.

    Arthas was being boosted by the Lich King after he came out of the tunnels; "I will grant you all the power I can spare." - Lich King 05:56
    Certainly that was quite a lot, even in his weakened state, together with Frostmourne. And I am guessing Illidan was also either cocky or underestimated Arthas, thinking he either was the same as when they met in Kalimdor or even weaker thanks to the assault on the Frozen Throne. Underestimating your opponent can be fatal, after all.

      @@Yolozaur69 Agreed, Illidan is easily one of the most powerful beings in Azeroth....and prior to ever being the glaive-wielding melee fighter that they depict him to be he was THE most powerful sorcerer on the planet. He really is the full package and I don't know who on Azeroth could contend with him at that point in the story. If they were going to use his hubris they needed to sell it way more imho

    Wow, ain't the difference in artstyle between the old and the new cinematics jarring.
    Almost as if back then Blizzard had the sense to make Frostmourne, and the rest of Arthas' outfit, look like functional if highly ornate pieces of wargear, and not like borderline unusable wallhangers.

    It’s not really the “evil” ending.
    I remember getting chills when Arthus and Illiden fought when I played the first time.
    But it always bothered me, the door was open, Illiden should have just made for the throne, not waited to fight

    • @MrDwarfpitcher
      @MrDwarfpitcher 2 роки тому +1

      Indeed, not really the 'evil' ending.
      The Lich King was created as a slave of the Burning Legion, it wanted to free itself of its control.
      Once it was free, it still had to deal with the enemies of the Burning Legion and then the Legion itself too.
      From the Lich King's point of view, it was a matter of survival.
      But about Illidan.
      What would he have done?
      Wack away at the Frozen Throne until Arthas stabbed him in the back?
      No taking apart the Throne takes more time, he had to fight Arthas.

  • @Archedgar

    5:20 This was the point where Arthas was lost forever.
    Jaina was the only one that could have made him see the error he committed in Stratholme and prevented him from going north. She was his last hope and when she walked away, it was only a matter of time before he became the Lich King.

    • @dragula131
      @dragula131 2 роки тому

      Idk, Jaina tried to convince him that he wasn't doing the right thing and he totally ignored her. Sure he had info that Uther and Jaina didn't know, but failed to indulge that before going on the destructive spree he did in Strartholme. If the city was going to need to be destroyed he could have given that info and waited until they started turning into undead to prove his point then he would've had all the help needed. Instead, he tried to "pull rank" on Uther (even if it was real he could do) and when met with resistance he declared Uther and his people traitors

    • @kamchatmonk
      @kamchatmonk 2 роки тому +1

      Arthas did what had to be done. There was no better option. Jaina and Uther simply washed their hands and did nothing, they selfishly chose clear conscience over greater good. Arthas took all the weight, all the guilt, and all the sacrifices upon his own shoulders, like a true king should in darkest times. And not a single soul acknowledged it. Not a word of praise, support, or comfort. Which is why Arthas turned to Lich King's side. No one needed him in Lordaeron, no one needed his sacrifices. But Lich King needed him, welcomed him, acknowledged him.
