Cam - I REALLY hate to tell you this but this wrong…..I literally was taught by the man himself on this kit AT his house how to play it properly- it’s “kinda” left for lead per se but your first note is the Right foot - I played it on this kit right here in his video -go to --7:18-- and you will see him start with the Rt foot- and I just asked Charlie yesterday cause we’re on tour with Anthrax and he plays it just like I said. ua-cam.com/video/TZr478YTJhA/v-deo.htmlsi=h_AE8cmN_z6jPxpR
Furthermore, the popular video that people always rely on - ua-cam.com/video/xhFIG6VtWgQ/v-deo.html - could be misleading because the audio isn't in sync with the video properly, making everybody think it's the left foot, but If it's slowed down to 0.75, it will show that he starts on the right.
That's bang on dude, I actually had the privilege to meet Vinnie and ask him how he played this, he said 4/4 left leg, triplets right leg, awesome mate!
That's what up bro. That's the way to do it when learning and playing covers. Some people just don't care and as long as the main beats are pretty close they'll be happy playing it like that. I guess it depends what you're going for. Like some drummers may need to learn 25 songs in a few weeks or so to play bars or clubs. In that case I guess just keeping a good on time beat and nailing a few signature fills does the trick.
Just found this video on my recommendations and subbed to your channel. First time I heard this pattern was actually on the Pantera home videos and I just about collapsed in awe. I knew I wanted to play drums, never been able to nail it properly so going to practice it again. Also in the studio Vinnie actually used wooden beaters and taped a quarter to each bass drum head so when the wooden beaters hit the coins they sounded like triggers. Genius. Keep up the great work mate and thanks to Dime and Vinnie for the music they gave us. Changed my life and many others as well.
That's more correct or else you would be playing three notes consecutively with the left foot. If you're ending on your left you by all accounts should be starting on your right.
@@joetroutt7425 I don't think so because beginning with the left, you've got all the eighth-notes so it makes sense (or all the quarter-notes with an another tempo as said by S. Cook).
@@DeathMetallus if you're playing this beat and stopping like he is at the end of the pattern it is easy but if you are playing it continuously it would be better to lead with right so you can always have a loop where it ends on the left and starts on the right thus keeping you from having to do 3 beats on your left (L LRR........LRR L)
Leads with his right. Here's a video of him doing it at 4:34. ua-cam.com/video/WH2_Yq0wm3I/v-deo.html I don't care how you play it if you make it sound good that's great. It might make a difference IF you weren't triggered. You can get the sticking wrong and still sound good, but if you're a stickler for accuracy and can't cover the groove it's gonna sound bad.
3:07 The notation is correct but what i hear is not triplets tho. What is played here is 8th-16th-16th instead of triplet. In fact, the only spot where the feet are played as the notation are at 0:50 through 1:02 . Next example switches to 8th-16th-16th pattern. It's a very minor detail that 95% of people playing this song misses... the actual triplet feel
Glad I'm not crazy in noticing this either. I know the notation is right, but the way he played it was lacking the triplet feel. Not to dismiss the guy's talent, he can obviously play it both ways. Im just not sure why he's playing it that way with straight sixteenths.
This is fantastic stuff. I've always wanted to play double bass, but suck soooo bad at it. Do you have some decent videos on developing control and speed? This was great. Vinnie was my fav.
Thank you! Ive got a couple playlist on double bass drumming for free. If you're interested in checking out my 6 week double bass drumming course you can here: www.cameronfleury.com/doublebassendurance
Just keep practicing but also I recommend looking at patterns for stick control, and playing then on the feet. That's what I do when my double bass control is lacking. Also always practice to a metronome
Vinnie does lead with his left foot. But he doesn't use triggers in a studio. Here is him playing it with no triggers. Sounds clear as day. He did use triggers live though to cut through the mix. ua-cam.com/video/xhFIG6VtWgQ/v-deo.html
Vinnie Paul led with the left foot during double bass patterns because he was used to keeping time with his left foot on the high hat. There's no need to do the same if it's uncomfortable for you, just swap the left and right feet in the pattern.
Yeah, I just switched to right foot lead. I also use heel-toe to shag the last two notes of the triplet so that my right foot is just constant 16th noted.
What I want next is how to write drum parts to songs, when I try to write it ends up coming out like ass. Edit- I can play this but not the foot pattern because I am a right foot lead but it sounds similar.
Hey man, great video and explanation! Another song that seems very difficult is the beginning of "The Smoke of Many Fires" by Be'lakor. I've tried tackling it myself but it's difficult to really understand all that he's doing. Thanks!
Randomly got recommended this and it’s always bothered me not knowing what his feet were doing. I’m not a drummer but it was a excellent breakdown of how to do it.
What trigger setup are you using/do you recommend Cameron? Sounds great! Also, thanks for de-mystifying this pattern, as you put it; I've always been curious about this one.
Nice work. Those triplets need to be evened out though. Your right-foot double is becoming thirty-second notes when up to speed. Sick groove. Vince RIP
This whole time I've been doing 4 stroke rolls instead of triplets LOL so much harder, and WRONG personally I'm not doing these doubles though. I already alternate my triplets lead foot so I don't need to do doubles.
Ummmmmm no. Its like saying Hey wanna make a pizza? Here are the ingredients. Will I make one? No. Its too complicated at those temperatures. IF YOU WANT TO DO...DO. DONT SAY HOW, SHOW HOW AND THEN DO IT!

Years... Actual Years I've been looking for a definitive vid on Vince's footwork in becoming. Subbed.
No joke bro, me too!
Same here! 🙌🏽

I've been doing it wrong for 20 years probably lol I was doing 4 stroke rolls instead of triplets
Yes sir! I got the chance to sit with Vinny and he showed me how to play it and your absolutely correct! 🤘
Awesome! Thank you!
Vinnie was a Genius, and a machine. RIP Vinnie and Dime

great lesson, I love how you animate the notation under the video. Very easy to read and follow.
Thank you! Felt like a lot of lessons on UA-cam are missing that.
This kick (especially in the last :11 of the song) always reminds me of a muscle car with a big ass engine just idling. Classic 💯
Man I think you are one of the BEST drummers on youtube, you deserve more subs.
Thanks so much for the kind words!
R LRR LR LRR LR LRR L that is the way Vince played this song. Leading with left foot, but the very first note of pattern is right.

oh god! never in a month of Sundays, I'll just watch you practice this one dude! Great lesson, dankeschön.
😅 It's a tough one to grasp.
The craziness actually seems doable now. Great stuff, sir. Subscribed because of humor, and now I'm even more glad I did.
Thank's for the sub!
Thanks for this! This will be fun to attempt - "attempt" being the important part there.
You're quite welcome Luke! Took me a bit to get it right too, no worries! Have fun man.

On Pantera 3 watch it go! Home Movie there is a clip of Vince showing his feet in action ( drums only)
Sweet work!!
Reminds me of how Pat Torpey of Mr. Big did this for the song Colorado Bulldog.
Cool man
Amazing
But... The triplets dont sound like triplets
Right?
Double bass RULES!
Want to learn a specific thing on the drums? Let me know down here in the comments section! \M/
Do you know where I can find accurate sheet music for this song?
Cameron Fleury FUCKEN BAD ASS!!!..\PANTERA/!!🔥🔥😈😈..HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS!! ..DAMN I MISS PANTERA!!!!!!..STILL GODS OF METAL!!!
Hot for teacher intro van halen
The end fill/roll for the 46 & 2 drum solo. I cant quite hear or work out what Danny is actually doing?

Great cover Cameron!!!
so grateful!!!
You just got yourself another new subscriber!
Great vid, but why didn't you play it at 130bpm?
Yeap, that's the proper way. Good job mate
Vinnie was right handed but he was goofy footed so he was ambidextrous with his feet and just naturally used his left foot to lead , I'm the same .
Me too but I wished I learn to lead with right dominant leg.oh well some day I'll learn to do ✅right leading
Pretty weird that this was posted on the week of my pantera binge
Well, this album did just turn 25 years old! \M/

He is playing way too many bass drum notes
I had to replay the intro a couple of times. Lol Good stuff.
Did I talk to fast there?

I have a torn tendon in my left ankle. I've been able to play double bass better and faster with this injury than beforehand.
Vinnie actually starts it with R, L RR LR, LRR LR LRR ETC.. Not left, as you do here.
proof?
I agree 100% I just posted the same theory
that makes way more sense to me but yeah
Agree. I saw how Vinnie did it on "3 watch it go" video and he started with the right foot if I remember correctly.
Awesome channel dude
Hey thanks so much! \M/
and again, Vinnie starts with the right foot. ua-cam.com/video/z4bcJOEFsmY/v-deo.html
I heel toe the doubles on the right foot. So much easier
I know this is old comment, but of course heel toe is easier but without triggers its just not that powerful. Or my heel toe just sucks ass :D
What trigger setup are you using/do you recommend Cameron? Sounds great! Also, thanks for de-mystifying this pattern, as you put it; I've always been curious about this one.
Currently using foot blasters and a Roland TM-2
Thanks mate
Subbed!
Welcome!
Great video. But When i play it back to the track the
(L RRLRLRRLRLRRL) works better. Im still working on it.
Good tip!
🤘
Right back at ya! 🤘🤘
It almost seems, to me at least, that he was essentially "keeping time" with his left foot as you would on the hats
This sounds alot like the beat in hot for teacher during the part where it sounds like a model A Ford
If left foot move on hihat, it will be similar bonham style )
Vinnie used Danmar red wood beaters and metal kick plates-
Show us how to play painkiller
Already did that! Check out the playlist.
I don't know how I found it harder to play this than I did to play spheres of madness
Them bass drum sound like a kid pen tapping in math class.
I always thought it sounded like Tap dancing not a machine gun lol

this isn't correct, your right leg is still in 4/4 timing, Vinnie plays triplets
The key to playing this song is
RLRRLRLR
the way I was tought it was R L RRL R L RRL R L RRL R
You could just switch legs and invert everything in the video
You play so that it doesn't sound like a triplets.
Van Halen
The pattern is way more simple, why are you teaching the most intricate pattern?
Way 2 make it difficult man
Ummmmmm no.
Its like saying
Hey wanna make a pizza?
Here are the ingredients.
Will I make one? No. Its too complicated at those temperatures.
IF YOU WANT TO DO...DO. DONT SAY HOW, SHOW HOW AND THEN DO IT!
you got the rhythm wrong! that's not the right one!
Nope
Fantastic lesson please stop holding the sticks with " trad " grip that's so cringe bro
This is incorrect, not way it was played.
