Why aren't there songs like this these days? We all need a bit of humour to brighten our lives. I loved this song in my teens and am so glad that you've posted it. "THANK YOU!!!"
I liked the BK's since their very first record, and had the pleasure of chatting to Duke at a show in Yeovil, 1996. He offered to buy me a drink - what a nice chap! RIP Duke - thanks for all the fun, I still love it all.
Used to listen to these guys back in the 1980s, was introduced to Cheech and Chong in the 1970s, always loved comedy and parody... always loved this song, and little white bum, but somehow I totally forgot about the Barron Knights until a clip showed up on my UA-cam feed a week ago of their Top of the Pops Christmas appearance in 1963...
Classic comedy from a time well past (pity). Such talent, it's good to be able to find it, here and reminisce the days when no Autotune etc. was needed or used. I have just been allowed back on u-tube so am commenting before I get banned again.
used to be stationed in the British Isles in the early seventies fell in love with this group you have been listening to them ever since wore out the album's I had wish I could find them on CD
My band and I were lucky enough to work with these guys as support act in Adelaide South Australia in the 80s we were a Beatles cover band. We learned a lot about showmanship from these crazy people. lol
OH WHERE DID IT ALL GO WRONG this is classic and from an era when this country had a sense of humour, When entertainment was about entertaining, and not about making people looking small or degrading them for public pleasure, Jasper Carrott Mike Harding, thank god for UA-cam subscribers who remember what it was like
The original "Les compagnons de la chanson" were good (within the limits of the recording technology then) too. [But of course whenever you hear the tune now, it's these words - especially "it wasn't there!" - that come to mind first! It's on a par with Flanders & Swann's "Ill Wind" (1964 ua-cam.com/video/VjA6bA1qtfQ/v-deo.html ), Flotsam & Jetsam's "Mrs. Peer Gynt" (ua-cam.com/video/PITQicDgOEA/v-deo.html ), Julie Covington's "Housewives' Choice" (1982 ua-cam.com/video/iC7QnDo-NPk/v-deo.html ), or Richard Stilgoe's "Minute Waltz" [anyone got a link to that?] (all of which you should look out) - once heard, you can never hear the tune without hearing those words.]
love the chapel lead is missing. Listened to lots of Barron nights when i was little.. didnt really understand a lot of the references or songs, and didn't appreciate how good they were at the time.
It's the song I remember most. I've written parodies for over 40 years now and I admit I cannot match the wit in this song. 30 years ago I had a 2 hour video of their shows. It was stored where I thought was out of reach, but my dear 6 year old son climbed up the wall unit & used it to tape cartoons! Grrrrrr. Forgiven, but NEVER forgotten. I have never been able to buy a dvd. Any help please??
My partner and I went to their 50th anniversary show at our local cinema! It was brilliant. My dear departed mum was a great fan, and it took me back so many years!
Since hearing this song the lyrics keep getting jumbled in my head as I try to remember them so my brain makes up lines such as..."She then picked up the toothpast..the missing bride was gorne" and other randomness lol, anybody else? I love this song...I think, stuck with it anyways ha
The line up has changed quite a bit over the years. I can't remember exactly when Barron and Dave left, but they've both been out of the band for some time over fifteen years (in fact, I think it's quite a bit longer than that), having been replaced by Micky and Lloyd respectively. Duke carried on until he fell ill and left the group in 2005; he died in 2009. From the point Duke left, the Barron Knights became a four piece and had to retire "Chapel Lead" and "Peace in the Valley" from their live set. Butch, another founder member, left in early 2007, forcing the retirement of "Hand on the Ear Folk Song" from their live set. These days, Pete is the only original member remaining, but they are still playing as a live band and are worth seeing. They still play some of their parodies as well as sixties and seventies covers. They're great live entertainment even now.
saw them as a kid in blackpool, signed our album, wont be lennon/mccartney prices but they way things are going,i'll get a free cuppa, great lads, good fun.
My second favourite track from the wonderful Barron Knights, but can someone please upload the live version of "Arthur Clarke" their version of MacArthur Park covered be richard harris in the earily 70's. I garurntee youl cry with laughter..............
Takes me back to sitting on Dad's knee listening to the old vinyls... I think my fave album was the California Girls one... Don't think that's what it was called though.. I still can't sing the real words to Space Oddity
Covered by almost anyone who could sing (Mireille Mathieu and especially Nana Mouskouri did it in several languages), and many who can't. But once you've heard this version, their words keep popping into your head (especially "it wasn't there!!). Like Ill Wind (and the others I've mentioned in another post here).
Happy memories, we need more songs like this, Baron Knights absolute legends 👍👍😂😂😂
Just come from my brother-in-law's funeral, he had requested this to be played there! Got to love his sense of humour! Rest in peace Ray.

Got to be the best track the knights ever did.
why doesnt todays youth seem to have the sense of humour we had in our youth? i was a big fan of the Barron knights in their heyday
Too afraid of offending. Too many offended by everything.
You can't even laugh at yourself these days.
Hey come on guys, don't just us all !
So was i and still am
haven't heard this for years, just as good as ever
Used to listen to these guys back in the 1980s, was introduced to Cheech and Chong in the 1970s, always loved comedy and parody... always loved this song, and little white bum, but somehow I totally forgot about the Barron Knights until a clip showed up on my UA-cam feed a week ago of their Top of the Pops Christmas appearance in 1963...
Can't get better than the Barron Knights for a laugh, this is one of the best.
I saw these guys live once. Damn we laughed. Virtually the entire night non stop.
Brilliant, I remember this like yesterday, superb precise harmonies, gives me goosebumps every time!
The words are hilarious - I've just listened to it twice! But also: the _singing_ is excellent, too.
Classic comedy from a time well past (pity).

Hi all l think the culprits are Snowflakes not the youth.
Compared to some of the rubbish, this is what l call easy listening
Classic humour from a brilliant group..🤣
Simply fantastic. What a great find.
Love this piece. The a capella is done so well!
Ray Moore used to play this and 'D'wot?' on Radio 2.

I've not heard this for YEARS! Still a great funny song... =D
A 10 foot ladder on his shoulder, heavy hammer in his hand, what mischief had he planned? Complete with stripy jumper, mask and SWAG bag!
This songs has been constantly in my mind for the last 45 years. How I miss this humour.

Our Jim was in the cooler
Timeless humour and entertainment.
This was my Dads favourite Baron Knights song" as the rain was PPPouring Down" lol..... Classic....
What ever happened to the Barron Knights.....This takes me way way way back
This is still my fave Barron Knights of all.
It's the song I remember most. I've written parodies for over 40 years now and I admit I cannot match the wit in this song. 30 years ago I had a 2 hour video of their shows. Wonder how many people will be sat in church on Sunday morning with this song in their head.🤭
Got this on autoplay in the car, guaranteed to get me through any traffic jam!!
my dad had the night gallery album and the songs are just as funny now over twenty years later. MINT!
Yay, the long version! I have a shorter version, and it's been annoying me. Thanks for posting this. Now Get Down Shep!
They are still performing, just google them,I was lucky I got a 40th birthday card from them
My partner and I went to their 50th anniversary show at our local cinema! It was brilliant. My dear departed mum was a great fan, and it took me back so many years!
LMAO this is the first time I have heard them and all I can think is 'Oh what have I missed?'
Look for their "A Taste of Aggro" - but listen to Boney M/Rivers of Babylon, Father Abraham/Smurfs, and Brian and Michael/Matchstalk Men first.
Since hearing this song the lyrics keep getting jumbled in my head as I try to remember them so my brain makes up lines such as..."She then picked up the toothpast..the missing bride was gorne" and other randomness lol, anybody else?
I love this song...I think, stuck with it anyways ha
These guys were really talented.
Now, these were a bunch of guys i'd liked to have seen live. Love their mickey takes
Funny yet beautiful! :-)
this brings back memories
Oh joy!
Has anyone got "Call Up The Groups"?
Briliant ensemble!
Loved this when I were a kid
A wonderful parody of The Three Bells. My favourite Barron Knights song.
he also loved the fact that the collection bow was missing but the vicar can't be found lol typical Dave Allen type comedy
this is so damn good
Jimmy Brown worked at Armitage Shanks....I don't think he did it!!!!!!!
Love this song
I worked at Armitage Shanks, don't remember seeing him there.
i'd really like to hear the hamlet cigar ad spoof they done. it had some brilliant references in it. love it.
I got "Night Gallery" many moons ago.
Still have it :)
Wonder if this song was the inspirstion for the Only Fools and Horses episode where Del Boy stole the led from the church roof
Yes, I thought that as well
Actually it's a serious problem. According to the #ChurchTimes, organized crime is in on it.
I have the night gallery album (the first one pictured) and play it from time to time. Still funny
brill!!!
brilliant
I believe that this was originally the 'Jimmy brown song...
Not bad - the same 5 blokes for 50 years - sad that Duke (or Richard if you prefer) was lost so young!
The line up has changed quite a bit over the years. I can't remember exactly when Barron and Dave left, but they've both been out of the band for some time over fifteen years (in fact, I think it's quite a bit longer than that), having been replaced by Micky and Lloyd respectively.

so cool that was more Edith Piaf than the Browns love it just hope some one can post Boy Scouts Gone Camping "Uptown Top Ranking magic
The Barron Knights are still on the go... playing at The Memorial Hall in Cleethorpes on Monday 17th August. I'm hoping to go if I'm not working.
saw them as a kid in blackpool, signed our album, wont be lennon/mccartney prices but they way things are going,i'll get a free cuppa, great lads, good fun.
Saw the Barron Knights on the pier at Blackpool with my mum
My second favourite track from the wonderful Barron Knights, but can someone please upload the live version of "Arthur Clarke" their version of MacArthur Park covered be richard harris in the earily 70's.
I garurntee youl cry with laughter..............
Oh dear so silly!🙂
A great Cover to , The Browns !
Takes me back to sitting on Dad's knee listening to the old vinyls...
I think my fave album was the California Girls one... Don't think that's what it was called though..
I still can't sing the real words to Space Oddity
@simjem - for "There's a dentist in Birmingham", search for A Taste of Aggro. It's a "live" performance of it from Top Of The Pops.
I have this LP.Showing my age now.lol
Very funny and some impressive singing.
Still classic
Musical comic genius
The original french version was Les Trois Cloches sung by Edith Piaf and Les Companions des Chanson. Later covered by Ed Brown and the Browns
Covered by almost anyone who could sing (Mireille Mathieu and especially Nana Mouskouri did it in several languages), and many who can't. But once you've heard this version, their words keep popping into your head (especially "it wasn't there!!). Like Ill Wind (and the others I've mentioned in another post here).
very fitting these days,
I reckon "Call up the Groups" was the funniest but I'm not sure if it was the first one that they made??
Little Jimmy Brown
@simjem See I still end up singing "Birth Control to Ginger Tom"....
So funny.
Anyone know what year this was?
This is David Bowie (Davy Jones then) ???
What's the original song they're parodying here?
Brian Boyd The 3 Bells by The Browns
The original was “Les Trois Cloches” by Les Compagnon de la Chanson” a French group.
I know churchwardens like this... bad lot, all of them.
unfortunately good humour these days has to be PC
theres kevin bloody wilson but he is a bit crude lol
billy walker
And he still hasn’t got his ****ing bike from Santa. What a ****!
