- Val Doonican is often quoted as saying that it took him seventeen year's to become an overnight success. He was referring to his appearance, in 1964, on the top rated live TV show, Sunday Night at Th
Delaney's Donkey, Rafferty's Motorcar, Paddy McGintey's Goat.... memories of our childhood. Val Doonican was the fella with the cardigan, rocking chair & a gentle Irish brogue. Oh, and a catalogue of songs both funny & thoughtful (Walk Tall, What Would I Be.....) which led us gently along into his world.
Artists and entertainers such as Val Doonican are from a simpler, less frenetic world. Still missed.
I haven't heard this for years. I grew-up watching Val Doonican. He always cheered me up. You don't get entertainers like him anymore, sadly.
You can say that again mate

Right, I'm fortunate to enjoy this good stuff
You know your getting old when people you grew up with as a child start to pass away. These stars were our parents favourites, so you sat on a Saturday night you would sit there and enjoy. Oh to be a kid again. RIP.
So, so true...
Memories like these are always happy 💕 ones. Not like today. But the children of today will probably say the same 😁😁
well said m8
Aye
You read my mind, .. it’s kinda scary too, it’s don’t seem that long ago, yet in years it is of course.. he was kinda comforting then, no loudness, kids drifted off to sleep..
He was a great entertainer. Great shows. Modest and without ego! Wonderful TV. 👌👌👌
What fun, the lyrics, the tune, the singing. 100% something to lift your day.
And Val so enjoyed it.
Lively jubley
I loved this song as a child, brought up as the child of a mother who was a Van Doonican fan. I can see myself lifting the arm on the record player to play it over and over again.... Such a cheerful song decades before kids discovered rappers !
my dad played this every Sunday after mass, crying with the lovely memories
my dad did oh god i miss him wish i had you tube back then in 1991 it would have made him very happy SOOOO SAD
My sincerest condolences to the family of Val Doonican who has sadly passed away.
Val wooed millions in the 60's and 70's with smooth Irish charm. He was up there with
the best of the Crooners of that generation. Sadly missed, r.i.p. Mr Doonican.
Played this at my mother in laws funeral at the city of London crematorium. Very touching and amusing. Brings back fond memories of mum(Kay). Rest in peace mum. X 🙏👍
Absolutely fabulous 😀 xx
This song NEVER EVER fails to make me smile- the lyrics are so clever! Thank you
xxxx
Brilliant...So many words so easily delivered...
We will never see the likes of these type of singers again
An absolute gem...❤️
love Val Doonican singing Delaney’s Donkey since I was a wee nipper!
Can't believe it's 2023 and love this music
2024❤
October 2024!
Bless you Val Doonican for all the giggles, smiles and lovely songs.. RIP Big Man, rest easy now and sing a few songs above the clouds .. :0)x
Pure talent, clear voice, no voice sweetener required.
The one and only Val Doonican. A man and a GENTLEMAN. As laid back as it was possible to be and had a magic about him that chilled you out and made you think that we didn't live in a bad world at all. One of the first records I put on my first computer 8 years ago was this track and Paddy McGinty's Goat. They were funny and made me think what a great place Ireland must be.
The world is a worst place for this great man's passing. God bless you mate and thank you for the endless times of joy your music has given me.
+kevvome "and made you think that we didn't live in a bad world at all"......exactly!
+Brian C Cheers Bri.
Glad you agreed with my sentiment.

From Donegal,l loved Val Doonican, his shows were a treat and that "smile" ♥️
A good man and a well loved performer, far better than what we have now.
This is my 'go to happy song' - I can picture the scene the man's a bloody genius!!! Thank you Val xx
I loved this song and his other family favourites such as the magical toy, walk tall and so on. Saw him live 3 times and his shows were always a delight and a pleasure. Sadly missed. RIP Val.
Val Doonican was the first famous person I ever encountered when I was just 8 years old. He was a handsome prince of a man indeed! He's provided lovely, warm and funny memories, became an idol of mine and was responsible for many tunes to the soundtrack of my life. Those Saturday nights after bath time he'd be on the telly with real international music stars, I recall all those lovely Christmas shows and that wonderful Homeward Bound series he did for BBC One in the late 1980's. He came from County Waterford, Ireland, where my late father came from - of that fact I am indeed very proud of. Next to Gilbert O'Sullivan, Waterford provided not only a versatile entertainment legend but an all round top bloke. May the Lord grant you eternal rest, knowing that you have given pleasure to many millions left here!
Okay I’m 13 and I’ve known this song for as long as I can remember because of my grandad ❤️ he passed away 6 months ago 🤧 hearing this song makes me cry but also smile💓 I’m so happy he taught me these
Lovely to think someone your age knows these old songs. I'm sorry to hear about your grandad. Keep singing.

They don't make them like that anymore
I'M SO PROUD OF THIS SONG!!!
My middle name is Delaney.
I love the Irish!!!
watching this and tapping my feet to it a classic song and singer
Thank you for the fun you gave us from the 60's. RIP and my thoughts are are with your family. God Bles You.
The first record I ever purchased for myself was a Val Doonican one, and when we got a TV in the late 70s I would always record his show - on just after lunch in NZ - to watch later. I have been a fan for over 50 years and he is still one of my all time favourite singers. I just wish the songs he sung were still to be heard by modern singers today, they always make you smile and cheer you up. Thank you for the video.
I'm a Guitar Taecher and use this song to teach children Travis Picking. I loved it when I was a kid and it is an absolute delight to see children enjoying it for the first time. I changed the 'all committed suicide' line to 'all ran off home nd cried' just to be super careful not to upset any of them.
My Gran knitted us all Arran sweaters because of this bloke,,,ha ha
Rest in piece Val, I have fond childhood memories, because of your songs.
RIP Val, Some great songs and this is one of the best.

bonobo2go Well said pal!
I absolutely adore Val Doonican! I played his music regularly when I used to do an Irish music programme on hospital radio - alongside the likes of Enya, U2, The Saw Doctors, Daniel O'Donnell etc. Watching this clip brought back lovely childhood memories of weekend evenings when entertainment shows were chilled, relaxed and did what they said on the tin. I'm delighted that one of his songs is on an ad for a toy shop chain. I LOVE YOU, VAL!
amongst my aunts belongings i inherited was a picture of Val with his autograph. i still treasure it.

I remember listening to him on the Light Programme before tv,. He was a perfect gentleman and a lovely gentle singer.
My cousin Audrey Duggan was one of his backup singers for many years, so I know firsthand what a decent lovely man he was, 'Ireland's Bing Crosby', may he rest in peace, and sing with Bing in heaven!

When I was a kid Val Doonican was my favourite entertainer , I remember on Saturday nights as my mum and dad prepared to go out for the evening them telling my older brother " let him have Val Doonican on later " and as the program started sitting down in front of the t.v. And not moving until Val sang that last song sitting in that old rocking chair , great memories of a truly great singer and entertainer. RIP Val and thanks for the memories.

One of those shows which came on the telly and I thought, well what a waste of time this will be, but always somehow thoroughly enjoyed.
Another such was David Nixon if anyone remembers him.
