  • Today we have a decent looking but still used Atlas N scale SD35 in the Southern Pacific Santa Fe merger scheme often called "Kodachrome". This is a DCC unit that I picked up off of eBay for a decent price which is rare as Kodachrome units typically go for primo money. There were several listed by the same seller at the same time so I think that's how I got lucky.. Or did i?

Love this Shane. The SP SF merger was a failure. The merger was planned in 1984. The ICC( interstate commerce commission) shut it down in 1986 due to the fact that two railroads that serve the same territory could not merge. The SP was acquired by UP in 1996. The SP has a special place in my heart because I was born the same year UP bought SP. great find and atlas doesn’t disappoint! Keep it up Shane!

Nice review of this sd35 you have! If your talking about that southern pacific Kodachrome engine at the western pacific railroad museum (formerly the portola railroad museum) yes I believe it is still around there but idk for sure because I never visited that museum before nor if I visited California before. The number of that sp Kodachrome engine is 2873 a emd gp9.

I have the Atlas SD35 SP bloody nose scheme. The detail mentioned at @2:41 is suppose to be the bell, but it seems the bell on your model has snapped off.
These Atlas SD35's came with the SP SD38 nose, while the prototype SD35 were equipped with the iconic SP light package up front.
Overall, it's one of my favorite locomotives. It's a quiet runner with great pulling power for it's size. It outpulls my SD40T-2/SD45T-2's from Intermountain.

I have had fairly mixed results with my Intermountain stuff.

We have a kodachrome that still runs everyday out here. Was just used as a yard switcher but has gone out on the mainline a few times this year.

@@Trains-With-Shane SD40r, I read somewhere it's the last 6 axle in that paint scheme. The only other one is in a museum. I can't be sure of that claim though.

Nice loco. Typical atlas buzz. I’ve got a kato sd45 in that scheme. It’s a really nice livery. Sad it didn’t exist long. 😊
Re the phone throttle, I agree. I use it because it’s handy, but it could be so much better. The android app actually includes a sound function in the app, which is not great, but better than nothing, and I think a great way to cheaply have sound with non sound decoders. A better “slider” interface and sound features would get me to drop good money on an upgraded app, but the WiThrottle developer is not interested. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Thanks as always for sharing the fun.
    👍😊😊

If I were feeling fancy i'd have broken out the Protothrottle, lol. But, alas, I wasn't. I usually only feel fancy when I use sound equipped stuff. Which. I have a few of those I need to do Will it Runs on. Picked one up from a friend locally and one up from eBay. One Atlas with Loksound and one BLI with Paragon... I think 4.. either 4 or 3, doesn't matter.

@@Trains-With-Shane the new atlas with esu sound boards are really impressive. I love the gp38 and alco noises on them. I gave away an erie Lackawanna PA-1 from broadway limited because it was so frustrating. I think it was a paragon 3. But who can keep track!? 😊👍

I'm surprised the loco doesn't have a Keep Alive cap.

Hardly any N scale units come with anything like that. That's one thing I really dislike about N scale DCC. It's especially noticeable with sound units.

@@Trains-With-Shane If your electronically inclined, the TCS KA-N1 would probably fit I've seen pics, it's smaller than a dime), but you'd have to find out where the bridge rectifier on the decoder is and be sure to connect it correctly.
