I used to get the Impression that Many Folks don’t Appreciate the Beauty of 0-4-0 Holdens & Pugs and Denigrate them as “Pocket Rockets” accompanied by various other Sneery Comments, however I find them to be Fantastic on my 8x4 layout which is why they are the Dimensions that they Are. I Recently Ran a “4 Wheeler Weekender” filling up the Dozen Sidings on my Layout with interesting 4 Wagon/Coach Consists and filmed “Shorts” to Post on various fb pages, which to my Surprise Generated a lot of Positive Interest and Supportive Comments. I’m Always keen to promote the idea of using these as Entry level to the Hobby as they are So Cheap to acquire & Easy to Maintain, also a Great way to Learn Detailing Skills without the Worry of Destroying something expensive if it all Goes Wrong. Thanks for Featuring this Unsung Hero of Hornby 🙌🏻👍🏻✨

Good morning Donni, great to hear you had positive comments on your short videos, are you going to publish some on UA-cam? I think you're absolutely right these items even in there day they were relatively good value for money and an excellent way for anybody to get into the hobby and develop an interest, there can be a bit quick off the mark but I think the general target audience there were designed for this really isn't an issue. They are great fun items with many to choose from and a nice way to get into collecting at a sensible price point, plus plenty of bits and pieces available for experimentation and repairs.
      Take care.

Ah yes, right at the end. Was curious what motor Hornby fitted in the originals, but as comments mentioned ‘zippy’ I guessed it was what I call a ‘slot-car’ motor. That motor is more substantial than the ones being fitted now, and recently, which is a compact version (as in my HO slot-cars from the 70s). I’ve got four of these 0-4-0s. The motor/gearing is based on ‘Formula One’ practice, but I can manage to run them slow, it’s a smooth start which is tricky. Inadvertently Hornby produced a winner. I knew it was a ‘one-off’, but didn’t know it was originally oil fired, and that system was designed by James Holden… the locomotives designer was G J Churchward. One never stops learning.

Fantastic video for the Sunday morning. The GWR freight set was one of my first Hornby sets. Still have it and run nicely, have a trio of the coaches as well with the silver seal wheels. Thing Hornby did a special for GWRs 150th birthday. So nice seeing these 040 trundling around layouts, little thing but bring a huge smile to one face. Thanks again for the memories that these may bring back as a child hood. 1978 was one of my favourite catalogues. All best from Marc; Leighton Buzzard

Great video. Like many kids I began railway modelling in February 1980 (I was 12) with one of these Holden tanks and the 3 GWR 4-wheel coaches . . . these cost £1.95 each I believe! Later in the year I got the LMS Jinty and a set of freight wagons . . . and was hooked. Before long I had the Hornby classes 29, 25 and 08 and Caley Pug, a used Tri-ang-Hornby Britannia, Lima classes 33 and 08, a Wrenn R1 tank and dozens of wagons and coaches. At this time I was using Super 4 track and a H&M Clipper that my dad had helpfully bought for a good price a few years earlier. The Holden and Pug were great little locos that ran well for such simple and inexpensive models and never gave any problems. Amazing to think that a lifetime of involvement with model railways began with that little loco and set of coaches from a local toyshop almost 45 years ago.

    Hi Oscar,
Lovely GWR 0-4-0 and coaches. These little tanks add a great atmosphere to country and urban branch lines.
The HD tank in the intro is without doubt a reassuring model, I have the 2-rail version and it is a treat to run.
On another note, the bluish tinge on the roof is interesting. Having spent a lifetime in print I was always told to make a white whiter add a touch of blue. Remember the TV soap powder ad Bluinite Tide for whites…I digress 😀

Hi Oscar, lovely little starter set there. I suppose this set replaced the Rural Rambler set as the basic passenger set. That set had the blue version of these coaches and the blue 'Polly' style 0-4-0 tank loco.
Hornby, and other manufacturers, used a lot of artistic licence back in the 1970s dreaming up fictitious combinations of liveries, locos and coaches/wagons which we don't tend to see so much in today's models. It was all about capturing the imagination of us 1970s youngsters, it must've worked eh?

Good morning Oscar, it's Martin from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. I hope you are OK. Just watched your excellent video of your four wheel GWR Tank locomotive. I really like the look of these little engine and it's coaches. They may not be based on the real thing, but they are a representative of the many little branch lines that wound their way through Great Britain many years ago, and as we know, if we had kept a lot of our branch lines maybe our roads may not be as bad as they are now. Sorry I was digressing a bit again, Lol. But yes, Hornby did a wonderful job of bringing out many various types of the 0-4-0 locomotive and coaches. I think they are excellent. I have many of the four wheel coaches in the different liveries that Hornby made. Well, a big thank you thank you again Oscar for a wonderful video again. Well it's that time again for my cup of tea and a toasted tea cake ☕. Keep safe Oscar and ill see you next Sunday and have a good week. 👍🚂

Good morning Martin it would be interesting to see how the country looked now had all the branch lines stayed open and what effect that would've had on private car ownership/independent transport and how that would've affected the choices of where we live and where businesses develop. I wonder if any computer modelling has been done a fascinating subject. Great to hear you've got a number of these 0-4-0 and four wheel coaches in collection they certainly seem to have made quite a number of variations.

Hi Oscar, the GWR pannier tank, the first new out of the box loco I ever had and then at the next birthday the GWR Holden 0-4-0 tank was the first ever new out of the box set I ever had. I got the freight set exactly as shown in the catalogue. I was 12 yo so I didn't think to keep the packaging but I still have the loco and wagons. All stored away in Tasmania for the last 30 years, it will be great to get back and get it all out and play with it again one day. With that open cab I added a little red grain of rice bulb to the firebox and it may have had a driver or I added one. Nice little budget loco that zipped around the layout at completely unrealistic speeds but it was good fun. All the best, Guy

Hi Oscar, Well I do have one of these 0-4-0s. Only because when you collect things there is always something in the collection you hate. This is my pet hate loco. I had to have one to make the collection complete. But only one. In comparison I have about 8 Pugs I much prefer the Pugs and other 0-4-0s But at least yours is a lovely runner and in nice condition. I have the same model as yours. I suppose it may be because they have released this engine in so many liveries that you would think in real life they made hundreds. But in fact only one was ever made. It is a shame that they did not make the valvegear to look line the illustration rather than the poor piece of pressed metal they used. Any way nice to see your running so well.

I remember that catalogue. Gosh, doesn't actually feel that long ago...
Hornby used to make some great sets. Robust, charming, and reasonably priced.
And one of the unsung things is that the cheap startset locos weren't that far removed from the high end stuff, so it was a cohesive whole. The premium duchess or 9f still had basic, but acceptably detailed, robust plastic bodywork. Lord Westwood had those very tri-ang piston rods, but none looked so far removed from the most basic starter loco.
Now buy a smoke Joe and then a dcc sound-equipped die-cast duchess and spot the price difference.
Anyway, Oscar, could you please do a little addendum to one of your videos, and explain your reasoning behind your points labelling. Blue stickers, yellow stickers, yellow with dots etc. And does the yellows refer to a specific location, or line, or passing loop etc? I'm very curious. About these things...
Cheers for the video. Neat to see

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  Місяць тому +1

Hi I think you're absolutely spot-on. The difference between a starter model and the top of the range models back in the 70s wasn't so great as it is today. Possibly everyone's come to expect the most astounding detail on the top of the range models, when you see these top range models for sale used, they are almost always missing quite a number of parts. The movement of some of these high-end models now is also quite interesting gearboxes and flywheels. Yes they are able to move very slow but I find that they are so slow. You can see them clicking from one tooth on the cog to the next. Interesting question about the colour dots and the point switches, the marking of the points is a temporary measure! On the last layout I use the colours to denote the different areas of the railway and then numbers so for the points within the blue section (all points associated with entering and leaving and moving around the station) for instance, were blue dot 1, blue dot 2 I and so on. Then perhaps green dots to represent or point work involved with the elevated section green dot1, green dot 2… and there were relevant colour and 1A and 1B for crossovers. It worked quite well and helped identify quite quickly which set of switches would work for area. It worked much better than simply numbering the points 1- 28 which is what I have done with the super four railway and I never could remember which Number point did what the dividing end was very useful with the system Six. With this current railway and the two different systems has brought some interesting problems. Now I have the Morley controllers I almost never control the railway from the controller itself and almost always use the remote handsets, so my plan is to have four control boards, one for each facing side from the operating well it gets more complex as we've got at least 24 sets of points for both the 3-Rail and 2- Rail, and point which looks very much like another but with colour dots with lines crosses or dots on them are a lot easier to identify at arms length with or without glasses on the numbers on the dots. When using a camera and trying to operate switches at the same time, it's easy to get things modelled up when looking out of the corner of the eye over or around a camera/iPhone. When I get the panels set up properly, I will divide 3-rail and 2-rail switching a little better as well. It's just sort of evolved just to get things going as it stands. The local electrical store used to sell coloured covers for the ends of the micro switches, but they've not been able to get them for ages. I should've bought more were available. Thanks again for looking in Hope that goes someway and answering question about the switching definitely not in based on any railway practices.
      Take care
      Oscar

@oscarpaisley thanks so much for your very comprehensive reply, Oscar.
It's funny how the modern review benchmark is how slow its crawl speed is. I'd much rather just have smooth starting, decent power, and above all, functions reliably I.e doesn't have quirky stops, doesn't suddenly reset or burnout its decoder, doesn't keep derailing for no good reason, and I can pick it up and not suddenly exclaim oh no the speedo drive/brake pipe/brake shoe/sand pipe has fallen off and blowed if I can see where it's gone. Anyway, moving on...
Very good to know the background of your points control. I thought the colours might denote some particular area of the layout. On my old marklin m track I've got about 16 electric points, and in a similar vein, using the marklin control panels which are in groups of four, I've got it "set out" semi-geographically, where (and this is where it's fortunate having one control area) its basically scanning over the layout left to right, as points rather conveniently seem to fall into groups of fours.
I don't always have a green for straight, red for curved, unless it's in station areas, points on the main line are green for the main route, whether on the curve or straight. I do like your coloured stickers, very visual, and doesn't require a stop to read numbers.
As an aside too; I find it interesting that many severely criticise the dublo deltic. It's shortness, less than detailed body to the point of crudity. I personally find it quite charming. It's sized very well with both dublo all maroon tins or super details, hauls anything you can hook up to it, growls like the real thing, and there's no mistaking it for anything else. And of course those critiquing well if you just want to play with toy trains rather patronisingly. We'll, yes. Yes I do. I wonder sometimes why those being so critical are in the hobby, as they seem to have decided what the aim should be of everyone in it, when maybe they should be just enjoying what they want, which might be completely different from what I want, and whilst I may admire their achievements, doesn't necessarily mean I have a remote interest in doing the same, and the same goes for what is considered to be prerequisite in modern locomotives. Which is why that 95 year old locomotive in my photo icon still runs like the brute it is.
      Thanks again :)
