Operation Black Steel: Strategy | Then & Now
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 бер 2019
- The black community has spent a lot of time harkening back to our history. And, I think that's important, and it's good we know it. However, I think an obsession over history can lead to some backwards thinking in regards to how we can reach people. Get a message across.
Despite the delay, this video was designed for Black History Month. Mainly to explore this idea of how the black leaders before us were successful, and what we can learn from them. This is the importance of strategy.
My bad for the delay. Guess, I was working in CP time.

Jesus was anti-establishment. He looked at the operating systems around him, saw the harm, and vowed change. Same as Muhammad. And Buddha. And Moses. Prophets are revolutionaries of their time.
It's the wildest thing to me too. A lot of religion is praising prophets for being revolutionaries of their time. It's why the conservative politics of many of the groups can often confuse me.
@@TheStorytellerAJ Aint that the truth, watching the messages these prophets preached distorted and fucked up
“Prophets are seldom appreciated in their own time. And if man is made to fear liberty...so much the better...a brief moment of chaos will remind them why they crave obedience.”
Hans Hanzo how did he criticise capitalism before it existed?
Twisted Skeng it would probably make more sense to say he criticized classism in religious beliefs. A rich Jew would be guaranteed heaven through their works even if they lacked true faith. While the poor Jews were destitute and doomed to be sinners sentenced to hell since they had little attachment to their god that pretty much doomed them to eternal torture from birth. He gave the poor the chance to seek happiness through faith that they otherwise couldn’t get before he came around to spread the good word. Jesus is a commie confirmed. Although at the end of the day none of it mattered cuz the romans turned the religion into the most rigid hierarchal and classist faith to ever grace our absurd little planet. At least Martin Luther did something about that.
Tbh I don't watch Operation Black Steel for the three reasons mentioned.
Why I watch it: to learn the intrinsic nature of being black and the portrayal of it in the media. I'm learning this for a series I'm working on with a black character that tries to learn his place in the world and how being black affects that.
What initially brought you to the channel? Why did you click the thumbnail?
@@Jaigarful I've watched all the videos, I just find the topics interesting in it of itself
@@Pensushets same but what's your project called is it in the works ?
@@isiahalcindor6278 the working tittle is Orphan Flock
Juan Ernesto Rodriguez hey since im seeing this 6 months after it was posted, hows your series going? is it somewhere i can watch?
Milestone Comics is a best example of this. A black owned comic company who had a lot of mean that was actually better than Black Panther, but no one really care or took the time to read their comics to they was bought by DC comics then everyone start to care.
Okay, you know what's wild? Milestone is what inspired Aaron to draw. It's, inadvertedly, the reason he started learning to draw The Boondocks. And, before The Boondocks was picked up for a TV show, he worked on a pilot for Milestone as a 1 hour drama. According to him, "It wasn't picked up because it was too black."
@@TheStorytellerAJ Wow didn't know that. Nice to know.
You talking about the creator of Static Shock?
I was on that when it first came out. Had the first issue of Icon & Rocket, Hardware, and Static Shock. If there were any others I don't remember them.
Huh... I just realized the best thing about the part of using the type of media that the people use to properly interact and cause change, is by making this video you're actually practicing what your preaching.
I love this channel, it's not often do I see a actually see a man that actually successfully does that
The reason I started watching operation black steel was after your video on homophobia, especially what you said about conditional and unconditional love
I am not black and I don’t pretend to know what it’s like to be black. But this channel helps me understand a little bit more in a way that is engaging. Thank you.
It’s almost racist basing what you know about a race and culture on UA-cam videos.. just stop worrying about us we’re fine you’ll be fine
Aaron McGruder almost seems to get smarter every time I hear him talk.
Much love to you both!
I've always felt so ineffectual and inactive for thinking and writing more about how to win over people who disagree with me via media than actually going out and being in a protest. I never understood, debated getting more involved with some on the ground movements but now you've reminded me why I was never interested: it doesn't work. Thanks for clarifying and keep up the fantastic work.
I think you can involve yourself in ground movements. But, understand there's a limit to how effective a march is, as opposed to investing in a business is. A lot of social issues, inform economic issues. For people to understand these issues, they need knowledge. But, it's 2019 and people don't read books like they should. So, we need to look into different ways of providing knowledge through entertainment.
wow really called us out there on clicking for boondocks lol. i'll be chewing on this topic mentally for awhile.
Well, keep this in mind. I ain't mad at it. It's the same for me too. If my videos were titled "Why Jesus was Black?" or "Eurocentric Beauty Standards w/ Black Women" or whatever, I probably wouldn't click em' either. It's all strategy. You gotta know the game. I'm a victim of it, and so are a lot of people. Now, is that positive? Maybe not. But, it's important that we know this when trying to reach people in the first place.
I am truly grateful for this channel. I am so happy that you uploaded this video. Best stuff ever! ✊🏾
Damn, you deadass just changed my whole outlook on life I honestly think this video could make me a damn millionaire
For whatever it's worth: I have never watched the boondocks; and I found your videos, and still watch them, for the analysis of social issues's portrayal in media.
Fuck, I'm not even american. None of the flair particularly appeals to me as elaborate as it may be. I'm here for the words.
The issues of black people in america are interesting and important to study from multiple stand points. I say this as a rural hungarian man who has seen at best 2 black people in his life.
This channel is what the world needs in 2019. Much respect to you, brotha. You lookin' out for our people ✊🏾
1) Thank you for uploading an actual video on April 1st and not a really shitty joke.
2) I've been really curious about the black panthers, but I know very little about them. Does anyone reading this know any books or documentaries I can check out to learn more about them?
Thomas Making you should read revolutionary suicide by Huey p newton, watch vanguard the revolution a documentary about the black panthers, and also watch the movie panther
You should also read Soul on Ice by Eldridge Cleaver. He was a former Black Panther
There's a doc on Netflix. It's not perfect, but i found it a good foundation to build on
Not strictly on the Black Panthers, but there's a really good book that shows how the Black Power movement emerged prior to the Black Panthers. The River of No Return: The Autobiography of a Black Militant and the Life and Death of the SNCC, by Cleveland Sellers. Sellers was front and center for much of the early 60s Civil Rights movement. It's a really good read, a true story, and an absolutely pageturner.
Their terrorists.
The main reason that this series is so appealing, is the core of this video. I appreciate the balance you achieve in entertaining and enlightening. It's not to distract or educate, just maintain the viewer engaged so the ideas presented have a greater likelihood of being digested. Processing the information as well as your interpretation in a more natural way; especially upon multiple viewings.
I gravitated towards this channel due to two out of the three reasons: The name and the boondocks. I stayed because of the philosophy. ANd it all started with that topic on sensitivity.
Came for boondocks, stayed because I learned and continue to learn. I love this channel because it gives me perspective that i as a Hickspanic american can't really have. Keep doing what you are man.
As a Black Man and an aspiring Creator, I watch Operation Black Steel for tips and nuance on how to create good Characters (especially Black ones). The Storyteller isn't the only Channel that does Content like OBS, and I make it a priority to ingest as many of them as I do.
As an African American Man, I watch OBS because I'm invested in the Social and Political Ecosystems around me. I thirst for knowledge, so I need to be fed. I also watch it because I like different opinions. I don't always agree with The Storyteller but he almost always makes good points that I can recognize and understand (I'm almost certain TS is either not American or his Parents weren't American because I'm noticing a trend of Black Men outside of America being more engaged with these topics and I'm fascinated by it.)
*But I would be lying to him and myself if I didn't admit The Boondocks was the thing that made click on it.*
Presentation will always matter the most. Whether it's right or wrong.
This video came out at the perfect time! I'm working on a short VN for my final at school about living while black and I've been having some troubles on how to make the issue appear to be important specifically because I go to a PWI and so most of the people who are going to play it aren't going to have to deal with those problems. Now I have tons of ideas that I want to incorporate into it so that it can be entertaining but also enlightening so seriously thanks for making these videos!
I always find my mind blown every time you upload an Operation Black Steel video. This channel really needs to have more than 15k subs.
r.i.p king steelo....I heard like water and teared up man..good video
I just ran into this series/channel.
I clicked on one of your videos because I saw the boondocks and thought it was going to be an in depth analysis of the episode, but it turned out to be much more than that. I’m ashamed to say that I may not have checked it out if I didn’t see the boondocks, but I’m sure as hell glad that I did. I used to be part of the movement many years back, and if the pen truly is mightier than the sword, I think I’m about ready to pick it up again. Thank you.
That's why if you want to perpetrate any kind of message, you should read one thing or two about marketing strategies
After finding this channel boondocks has taken on a whole new meaning to me as a black person. There's so much behind it.
15:35
you a funny guy, i come for these funny lines too
I feel like an asshole, now, since I came to this channel for Boondocks. What can I say? I'm a sucker for a good analysis.
Anyway, I may have been drawn in by the milk, but I stay for the meat
This is the second video I've watched of yours, love the message brother. We will overcome this
I'm really glad that people like you are encouraging movement and working keeping Aaron's message alive
I just watch for the massage :) and i love your sense humor as well lol keep up the good work
Great vid, but I think you misunderstood season 3 (Fuck season 4). Or maybe I'm reading too much into it. At the beginning of Season 3, Huey says, "What's the point of talking if nobody listens." From that point on Huey takes more or less of a back seat in being an active character. He becomes more reactive. And when he does chyme in with some "Woke" monologue, it's usually very brief. And he says several times throughout the season that he's "Retired" I believe Huey became a tool for Aaron to vent about his frustration with his lack of success bringing light to many issues he tried to solve. In the previous seasons, Huey was much more active and preached his beliefs a whole lot more. He beat up a white man for yelling at Martin Luther King. I can't picture season 3 Huey doing that. You're not wrong that season 3 put humor over message. But I think you're wrong about the reason.
Thank you! I was feeling in a Boondocks mood
Ngl I started watching the series because of the eps featuring the boondocks
But now im just watching to hear you talk, your opinions and breakdowns
This stays forever as my favorite series
I am grateful for this channel. Was one of the steps to helping me wake up
Damn. I came for The Boondocks, I left with a better understanding of the world. Cheers!
Ay man, I am working on my own animated series and you're channel has given me so much to think about
Been waiting :)
Beg you keep doing what you're doing man
This is inspirational.
You have a lot of good points and made me think about how people need to work together not fight, Im a lover not a fighter but I have had to kick some asses
I really agree with this video, it's relevant in 2020 as well as Aron Mcgruder's speech, it's 2020 and what he said still matter, and I agree that what people are doing rn isn't working, and there should be a new way to make change in the age of internet, and mainstream media. Keep up the great vids dude
I'm grateful for FD signifier suggesting your channel 💛 your videos are amazing
Your videos are extremely underrated and it makes me sad please dont stop
This video really spoke to me 💯 Thanks man
I actually come for the content. Your information and your perspective.
Hey man, that's unfair. 15:12
I came here because you recommended a good animé in your Representing black women video!
There are handfuls of us, handfuls!
This is fun. I just like video essays. I found this because it got popular enough that when I went looking for a new essay channel, I found this.
I also like Boondocks, the editing, and the music is chill; but I'd have never found this thanks to the algorithm.
Your work is so inspiring.
Man I've been watching one or 2 of your vids that have popped up on my recommendations and I'm definitely subscribing. You are speaking the truth for our people in entertainment and medium and using one of my favorite shows and others as a base for it which I absolutely love. You keep pushing on my brotha
If I may make some suggestions on topics you could possibly cover in the future
Your accent makes me want to know if you have thoughts and discussion on the similarities and differences between Black Americans and Black Brits. you could def add some commentary to that I'd like to hear
Also would love to hear your thoughts on the evolving nature of black representation in media, particularly animation and gaming. Was wondering if you had thought on how good of a show Craig of the Creek is or how amazing Spiderman Into the Spider Verse was or thoughts on Mafia III or Watch Dogs 2 for example.
Thanks, man. I'll keep doin' what I'm doin'.
Black Americans and Black Brits suffer from a majority of the same issues, with some exclusives to each respectively. I promise to go into it in due time, since I think it's something quite a few people are interested in. As for the evolution of black representation in the media, I have a video recorded on Spider-Verse that I'm still on the fence about uploading for multiple reasons relating to copyright, how to acquire HQ footage and questioning the quality of the script.
@@TheStorytellerAJ I'm always so fascinated in hearing about the differences in how the black diaspora live. Much is the same naturally but I remember watching a short (Like one minute) vid from Daniel Kaluya that compared racism in the US and UK. Its fascinating and I like hearing from black brits and black French and black dutch etc etc
And I cannot wait to see if you do a Spider Verse vid, as a New Yorker that film was a legit dream come true. The moment I saw him in the Jordans bumping Swae Lee and Biggie I knew that was my guy. et you'd have some interesting foresight into that :)
i feel bad for smart black people, in this era anti-intellectualism has taken over as a mainstream ideal, something you mention in another vid i saw, its already tough being a smart person in general bc of this, but to be black on top of that ugh.
my mom is from mexico but is light complected so ive been called white and asian before ever being called mexican lol, lets just say that got me into race and culture.
youre vids are breath of fresh air bc no body is taking these topics seriously, like you are using cartoons and comics to make a point and that dont fly for the mainstream media or pop culture, regardless i really like these and will probably send these links to my family who really dont care. lol
otherwise you know, i just wonder what grassroots and community action will look like in the coming years. the lack of coordination and respect for authority really have us poor people in a bind. "every man is a chief" really doesnt work.
I'm here for the message
It's why malcolm x partnered with George Rockwell, malcolm x wanted to campaign for the USA to make a black nation and knew George Rockwell wanted blacks gone from the USA. They agreed to attain both goals peacefully. Somethings outside of that campaign lead to it failing.
I still stand with malcolm x.
malcolm post 1963 was so cringe right? 🐸
I show up for the Boondocks stuff, but I like the Boondocks because of its messages. I think I agree that if you didn't have the three things you mentioned then it would probably be a lot harder to get a following, but I like the way you use The Boondocks as a medium to get your point across. I like seeing your creative vision and I love your message. I hope we really can have a revolution.
Adding on to the jasmine example is when mr wuncler takes over grandads soul food and commercializes what is supposed to be a family affair so that he can buy the park next to the restaurant. Huey tries to tell grandad that he’s just feeding (literally) wunclers greed but grandad doesn’t listen cuz he’s a part of the system that he’s being told to get out of.
Hey, a white scouser here watching this a week before the general election and I've been moping about, good vid. Helps put things into context.
I've wanted to go hard in content creation for a while, but the message I want to spread is "stop mindlessly consuming content and go create something,' but I saw it as hypocritical that I might have people who mindlessly watch me. It's really been tearing me apart from opposite sides for around 4 years. Now I know, if millions watch me mindlessly, but my true message only reaches one person, then I've done good. Because the THE PEOPLE WHO NEED MY MESSAGE, WONT BE ABLE TO HEAR ME, IF THERE AREN'T THOSE, ECHOING THE WORDS I SPEAK. Thank you. I needed this. I'll consider it a birthday present because i was born on Apirl 1st. It's now 2020 and ill work my hardest to make my visions (what I will see) into reality (what I'm seeing).
This concept reminds me of Hidden Figures, when Dorothy Vaughn snuck into the room with the new IBMs and learned to use them so that she'd have the advantage in being chosen to be a programmer, as well as being able to bring everyone in her computing group with her. Taking advantage of new technology.
"Any upward movement is movement for us all" -Dorothy Vaughn.
Great video with a lot of applications, including the kind of "role-reversal" we've seen between politicians/news networks and comedians (relatively) recently. Love it!
keep up the good work
Yes another video
I love this channel and the message it brings👏🏾‼️
What are your thoughts on black tv shows today such as Blackish & dear white people and the message they present compared to past shows such as the Cosby show and fresh prince?
I got some issues with Dear White People which I'll get into at some point in the future. Black-ish kinda just reminds me of a "modern-day" My Wife and Kids. I liked some of what I saw, but it deffo felt like a family show, which I'm not mad about to be fair. Just not my sorta thing. They tackle the same issues in different ways, due to context. That's the main difference, I find.
Tbh it really about popularity which is sad.
Good video per usual
you do good work man
I don't really have much to say, you've said everything I've thought of and I'd only be repeating it. I do think people forget how important it is to make content that can appeal to a large audience while trying to not forget the message behind them.
I've seen many creators do this and end up exploiting their fanbase and in turn end becoming exploited by that very system. It's even worse when they produce great content but having nobody to share it with because nobody cares.
Playing a role to cause change is important but if all your doing is yelling at an empty theatre than its close to doing nothing at all.
I always tell people to know your audience before creating anything and using whatever advantage it takes to reach them like social media. There's nothing wrong with using as many resources as possible, just as long as you're reaching someone.
I wanted to know what an operation black steel was, but the music does make listening at work very easy
Wow, you have enlighten on me something huge about strategy.whats the point of having events and seminars talking about our history and culture and how to improve as a people if you can’t be relatable to the person. No point of talking to someone if they don’t care. Even they pretend to care the same thing. Thanks TheStoryTeller you for this.
J Cole has this bar where he goes "We learn from Rappers, not teachers. Cause' if we can't relate then how the hell you gonna reach us? Surrounded by crooked cops and preachers." I think it speaks to what the young respond to.
For what it's worth, I'm white, started watching you for the Boondocks and stayed for your opinions on struggles of black people
I know I'm super late (new to the channel) but I thought those prison r*p3 jokes were crucial to the episode. Its become basically accepted that this happens to men, black men, in our "justice" system. Its become an expected part of the punishment. Boondocks talks about it in a crude way, but you can't talk about the horrible exploitation in u.s. prison systems without talking about r*p3 imo.
... Amazing dude. Your amazing
i watch the video for the reason that I wanted to know more about a culture that was not of my own (im mexican by the way) and I thought it was interesting watching a video about another culture, since I don't know much about my own.
I would love to see a new season on the stuff that has been going on these years.
They're currently working on a video game for their comeback.
Man that was a good commentary on the subject. I'm white so that gave me a lot of understanding and stuff to ponder. Much love.
thank you just thanks
The medium is the message
I loved the op of your videos 👌✨🖤
Hold on now, I was only interested in the name and the perceived title of one of your videos and you delivered (the one on misunderstanding sensitivity)......ok and it was also because it had the boondocks there too but still, I was there for information and you provided.
I feel like this video wasn't meant for me in particular, but it was real interesting what I took away from it. You see, I write, but I've always done it solely to be entertaining. I've never really had a message to send, aside from the ones that just inevitably end up worming their way in as I attempt to piece a plot together.
This video made me think about whether or not I do actually have something to say. Great stories often have something to say, rather than just being fun to read. I'll definitely sit and think about that. Is there something important to me that I'd wish to state through my writing?
The only reason I started watching this channel is because I liked the boondocks so much. In my early 20's back in 2008, I became big into the whole libertarian thing, almost to the extreme end. Yet the thing that ended up pushing me away was the unwillingness to have any impurity, the unwillingness to compromise the ideology a little bit to yield some actual results.
We live in a world of extremes, where the middle-ground doesn't exist, where media companies use Filter Bubbles to feed us what we want to see.
I'm assuming the extreme end means anarcho capitalism or voluntarism. The logical conclusion of libertarianism is anarchy if you apply libertarian principles consistently. But there is this smaller sub idea within libertarianism called Hoppeanism where they seek to physically remove those who would enact a state or in their words destroy a "libertarian social order" That actually means that they want to get rid of anyone who disagrees with them. And to be completely honest with you, I think they're winning. Soon libertarians who seek to impose their will on no one will have to change their labels to get the normies to not associate their ideology with that. We already did that with anarchism because of commies and capitalism because of how it has been molded into a political term
I love it keep speaking the truth
In hopes when you listen

The Truth Surfaces...
weird I watch operation black steel for the music, the boondocks, and to learn about black culture in the US. I personally want to be an animator and a writer. I think that to make good movies, shows, comics, media of this type in general, you need to have knowledge about different cultures.
I know im a bit late but if any writers want to get together and create something let me know!
Again, I’m no black person :(
But even if I may not know how black feels or endures, I can appreciate this logical episode.
As of right now, I am playing this game too: immersing in the very thing(s) that I was initially against or how it was used: politics, stupid people, entertainment, and money.
Surely, strategy is going to be key to maintain my dignity while not sounding like a crazed fool with a message. But even the message falls on deaf ears who prefer to twiddle their thumbs on their smartphones, maybe even neglect their job, or even hate their lives, when they could be proactive in supporting things rather than their own mundane interests.
Perhaps this is why I chose to be a teacher, because improving my own communication skills will be a great leap in getting some positive messages across.
For now, I say thank you brother from another mother.
