This resonates with me. Honestly looking at the history and how this approach turned out, i don't see a future where we are liberated by "leaders". We need to liberate ourselves, nobody can do it for us. To think otherwise is to reject the very principle of power to the people🙏🏽

The more I see; the more I'm of the mindset that movements will have "leaders" in that some people will find themselves in situations and positions where their actions gain more attention and garner more clout than others, and naturally others will latch on and push that momentum. But those people are still just people and fallible. Additionally, the best ones seem to be the ones that find themselves there organically, simply by way of doing the work they are doing their way.
Putting folks on pedestals or intentionally organizing around them or expecting them to Lead(TM) a movement is guaranteed failure.

As a black anarchist, the revelation that MOVE turned into a cesspool of abuse hurt me because they were my first exposure to the very possibility that black people could be anarchists and that we really should be. However, it matured me that groups or communities shouldn't be treated as "leaders" either for the same reason why a singular person shouldn't be given such weight or idolization. It also taught me that there needs to be an end to the separation of the individual and the collective because, as it turns out, numbers don't provide safety, strength, or health, but positive, trusting relationships do.

I too was inspired by Huey from the Boondocks when I was just in Middle School. That was my introduction to skepticism about tradition and culture. I think characters have inspired me more than people because characters are the sum of their ideas and themes. Personal hopes can be projected onto them rather than being tied with the goals of the artist too.
Currently reading the Dune series and the 2nd book is called Messiah.

The focus of "leadership" for non-formal communities has always seemed rather odd to me. How do you determine who a leader is? There's no voting done after all. And just pulling famous celebrities is rather silly, the celebrities are often famous for reasons completely unrelated to leadership skills.
And even if there was somehow a vote among every single member of a marginalized community, they certainly wouldn't agree on who the leader should be. There are lots of diverging views among any community, even a group with 10 random people would have a wide range of views, so when the groups reach millions of people in size there's never going to be a consensus.
And yet despite this you constantly get people either claiming to be a leader of a community, or people dismissing a community using one of these so-called leaders being bad as a cover for their bigotry.
You also see this among other bad faith criticisms about communities not "policing" themselves. But why should one member of a marginalized community be responsible for another to begin with? Because they share the same skin color or sexuality or any other trait that you want to be bigoted over? Nonsense, they owe no such responsibility whatsoever.
That's of course not to say that people can't rise into informal leadership roles to some degree. Organizers of protests and other events, popular political writers, and supported activists can certainly be a leader for some portion of a community, but the idea of them as a representative is always going to be lacking to me. Most people aren't out there running background checks on an event organizer taking place in a public square after all. There's also concepts like role models in media that can impact people as well.
But these people don't control or guide the community, an event someone organizes is only as big as the amount of people who choose to attend, the writer is only as popular as the amount who choose to read them. They can't issue "attention everyone, you must attend this protest" like the leader of a company or a band or other formal groups are able to do.

_"And even if there was somehow a vote among every single member of a marginalized community, they certainly wouldn't agree on who the leader should be."_
i mean...that's democracy. we're not going to agree on everything, the idea is that we satisfy the needs for the majority of people possible. that means you're going to have to fight and hash out your ideas, but hopefully the end goal is one where as most people are happy with a decision.
also we are responsible for one another. i don't really know about the skin color or sexuality argument of this, but if we're at a protest, and someone tries to assault another protestor, i'm going to try and stop them. that's part of community policing and it's important to do.

GX Season 3 is fascinating to me cause it's about toxic relationships and obsession. Judai is pushed as a leader unbeknownst to the responsibility that comes with it. His friends become too reliant on him, and when their rosy image of him is tainted, they reject him and everything he embodies before being killed.
Sho is obsessed with Judai. Yubel is obsessed with Judai. Judai is obsessed with Johan. Kaiser is obsessed with his final hurrah. It's a whole season about how toxic relationships, responsibility and agency. And in S4, it's properly reflected in Judai letting his friends solve their own problems and becoming "respectfully" distant to all of them, cause he recognises the danger of it. I really dig it. Judai's arc is about playing the hero, and learning that he isn't actually ready to do that, and finding a new path. Love GX.

the utility of leadership is one that has clear upsides and downsides.
on one hand: a leader is a target. the second the king is taken the game is over, and if the leader were to, say, _fall into totalitarian demagoguery and begin exhibiting fascist tendencies_ then the movement is essentially lost unless they're quickly displaced...
    BUT
on the other hand: leadership provides a clear utility in _direction._ see while you idolize the energy of the 2020 summer protests, you also need to remember the issues--people were disorganized. agitators ran freely between peaceful bystanders. we weren't able to properly defend ourselves in unity from hategroups and the feds because we were a loose band of random people with some willing to fight back and some not--i.e we weren't the panthers. we had people demanding labor rights, people demanding indigenous rights (things i all agree with mind you but not particularly relevant to what the protests were about), people demanding blood, people forming weirdo segregated subcommunities, and people demanding police reform all right next to one another. TL;DR, we had no organization. with a leader comes the alleviation of these issues. leaders can have clear direct messages, strategies, and rules of engagement. had we been the panthers, we would have been able to defend ourselves from nazis and cops(also nazis) more effectively. had we a leader there wouldn't have been such a disorganized series of demands, and instead we would have had clearly defined and people backed ideals. potentially there could have been less violence as we could have rooted out agitators from the main group.
and this is a problem that extends beyond just 2020. a large issue of the last like 30 years is that we haven't had a strong black movement to focus our abilities on. the best we've had is blm which is a rather milquetoast(though still better than nothing) movement primarily focused on police accountability. we don't have any radical movement or ideals to inspire people. when you go to the hood what are the people doing? just surviving but not thinking about the next step; there is no revolutionary consciousness in the hood because there's no revolutionary consciousness to latch onto. it's like you said: we've taken the next best thing and now we follow celebrities. it's neutered us. how do we resist when most of us are still asleep? _THAT'S_ the utility of leaders. the ability to wake people up and get them to follow to the final point.
i'm a leftist libertarian leaning person, so trust when i say i'm mostly skeptical of power, but i also strive to be realistic. the way i see it, the key is a balance. it's like you said: be mindful of their position, and be ready to criticize them and watch from a distance. i think the first things that need to be laid out with a black leader, is the ideals of the movement. "knowing the gospel" and all that. once that's been codified, the role of the leader should be in keeping the movement focused and as democratic as possible, so should the leader be assassinated or turn heel, others can pick up the slack. leadership is simply a natural part of being in a group, but we don't need to have hierarchy. we can do this together, but a arrow with no head will do less damage.

    8:00. This reminds me of something;
When the Buddha was still trying to reach Enlightenment (ik this seems weird but trust me there's a point), he at one point was practicing extreme asceticism. His dedication and proficiency was very inspiring to a few fellow ascetics, and they followed him. Well, when the Buddha-to-be nearly starved to death, he realized that the whole asceticism thing wasn't bringing him closer to his goal. So he abandoned the practice. Later, he becomes the Buddha and he encounters his old followers. Turns out they thought of him as a quitter. They thought he had simply given up pursuing Enlightenment at all. So when the Buddha said he had realized his goal, they were confused and skeptical. Of course, in response, the Buddha simply asked them something to the effect of, "Did I ever say to any of you that I was no longer pursuing Enlightenment in general?"
They had to admit that, of course, he had not. Then they were taught the Four Noble Truths and yada yada yada.
Such is the same with many earnest people who become leaders/idolized...except many followers don't realize their errors and that's how blind dogmatism, gatekeeping, calling people grifters when they change their mind about anything ever, and all that shit like that comment happens.

Just to kind of address all the people pushing back on the idea of building leaderless movements, there is archeological/anthropological evidence, that you can read about in books and hear about in lectures, that shows the idea that we as an entire race were just helpless nomads till "leaders" came along that progressed us forward is very likely a myth. The historical evidence paints a much more complex history of humanity. One that shows that we have been theorizing and, most importantly, practicing different ideas for how to organize and live with each other for basically the entire time we have existed. These aren't recent concepts. They're as old as our species.

No one believes soms stone age messiah lead humans brought forth to all our innovations like Prometheus. People are saying that leadership provides certain qualities which are valuable to a group. First and foremost being organization. A organized group can function more effectively as they can work better together to function as a whole. If for say a Roman army would just break rank and charge at the enemy they would miss out on their general's Tatics that could win them the battle. The concept can be applied to movements as a unifying force allows them to function as a whole rather then disparate groups acting alone.

If people need to put in genuine effort to not huddle around a leader and not to idealise leaders then its never going to become the default. For the people who don't want to put that effort in, they still want and need a leader. If a leader isn't given then they'll huddle around people who are either unqualified or will abuse that power. When you step back because of genuine issues with leadership there will always be people who don't know or care about those issues happy to take your flock. Collecting a movements power and momentum behind a single leader or group of leaders is a big reason why so many leaders end up disappointing those who follow them. If we dont want our movements to have their feet swept out from under them, we must move away from putting power behind charismatic leaders and move towards a movement where power and influence are evenly spread out. It might not result in the movement being as popular or easy to follow but it will lead to a movement being much harder to stomp out or assassinate, metaphorically and literally

Leadership is a fluctuate concept. It always intrigued me how we praise and glorify historical figures for doing the bare minimum of moral acts. It shouldn't be an exceptional requirement for a select few people if it's something that anyone and everyone can be capable of doing and at the end of the day leadership is another label society will place on you based off how much of a moral responsibility you uphold. Leadership is not defined off your actions its established from the amount of influence you create in other people. A subjugated inspiration amongst the people that allow them to experience setting expectations by example. Idealistically the standard basis for leadership shouldn't be dependent on one singular person but rather the collective mindsets of a group as a whole. Acting in a sense as one hive mind link that lowers the risks of having brainwashed puppet figures acting as corrupt tokens derail the organizations initial agenda and allows more progressional outcomes and growth.

To be blunt, leadership (in a lot of ways) is mostly just idolisation. Cause' there's nothing a "leader" does that no-one else can do. Communicators are not leaders. And, there's equal value in what everyone does to contribute. And, until we start valuing our contributions equally, we're gonna continue to feel the need to have these "leaders" who lead the pack.

@@TheStorytellerAJ And I understand your points there and I do agree that everyone does have a part to play. We should value people's contributions equally. But at the same time I don't believe "Anyone" can do all that. Some people do have better skills to guide and communicate better and are able to organize people a lot better. This is probably the misanthrope in me saying this but most people don't want to think on their own and have very low view on themselves. They want someone to tell them what to do and what to think. So they want someone to well for a lack of better term lead them. I understand idolization does come to the play. Again I believe that as people (And this is for humanity as a whole not just black people) we need to hold these leaders accountable for their actions and not just go along with them just because they are on the top of the totem pole.

@@TheStorytellerAJ anyone can do what a leader does because anyone can be a leader. And leaders can be disappointing but unfortunately what they can not be is avoided. Leadership predates class society, predates humanity itself. The most horizontal organisation inevitably attempts to lead others and leaders emerge within it, the most disorganised group inevitability attempts to get organised which naturally causes a leadership to emerge. In other words, leadership is a natural phenomenon. It sucks that that's the case but that's how it is, and so the question of leadership is not whether we should have it or not, it's how to do we keep it in check. In my view, in the political sphere, the best leaders are easily replaceable, which is why the best "follower" is a leader in waiting. I disagree with the last commenters position that most people want someone to tell them what to think, but it is generally true that even the most independent thinkers often look for the leadership of others, even if they're some kind of leader themselves. It's just how organisations works, and getting organised is generally more reliable than being disorganised even if at times more disappointing.

@@TheStorytellerAJ leaders aren't "special" but that's fine. they don't have to be. the fact that anyone can be a leader is a good thing, but it doesn't mean there's no value in it's utility. some people are good at guiding and others feel more comfortable supporting. some people are good at speaking, some are good at punching, some are good at building, but even within all of those practices SOMEONE has to reign in the rest. leadership isn't necessarily about messaiahs, and that's the point i think OP was trying to get at.

But also glad that this video came out, after watching your last video with a friend the question that came up was do we need black leaders? And I think the answer is no, we need communities that is based around shared values and supporting one another in a system that never supported us... in my opinion of course...

For people to really understand how to move without leaders, and believe in the politics, not on the person, I remember a saying I wish more people understood: Believe in the ideal, no the idol. That issue is something I've seen come about a lot with the religious, and I remember many conversations about Darwin "recanting" his theories when he died, as though evolution wouldn't still be true even if he did recant. I think it's something that tends to extend from belief in Authorities in general. Kswiftly and Malcolm X talking about the people moving on their own can only come about when we start abandoning the desire and need to hear someone else before we act ourselves.

I still have to disagree with the slacktivism argument. It definitely does exist, but the main perpetrators aren't disabled or poor people, it's liberals and white liberals especially. Simply put, liking stuff on social media doesn't help the movement, we need more. You don't have to be on the frontlines at protests or riots either if you can't, I can't due to being a student and health issues. Fund the people who are, help organize or spread awareness through your community and tell them more effective means of supporting the movement. Performative Activism should always be called out though, I don't think it's healthy for the movement otherwise and it definitely isn't right to gaslight black ppl when there is a legit issue with people bit doing much more than giving lip service to the Black Lives Matter movement and other struggles rn

I feel like I see a cumulation of these recent videos in a possible meditation on Afro Futurism in Anime etc. As a Blerd our immediate goals seem quite sharp, whereas the where we *should* go somewhat divergent. Growing up in the American southeast I enjoyed the ‘Black Church’ video you had, but perhaps as consequence of also being an Atheist and or Sci-Fi nerd, at times I wonder if a prerequisite to where we’re going depends on that extra bit of *theosophical* Hope. The more we talk about the plight of Proletariat in general, the more we have to about Nihilism and what can/should remain as society collapses and possibly restructures. Questions as old as socialism itself to be sure. But Nietzsche never saw the Boondocks or downloaded a mixtape.

I believe a leader can be an important part of a movement, they can be focus the anger of the people at a specific cause, which can be very useful. Castro, Malcom X, Fred Hampton, Ho Chi Minh, and Lenin come to mind. But we have to remember, it's the people who create the movement, it's the people who elevate the leader. The moment a leader is ordained into a peoples movement, it stops being a movement for the people.

The issue is when Black leaders the likes of George Jackson, Du Bois, Audre Lorde are replaced by vague capitalist cultural signifiers (we get Beyoncé and BLM on NBA jerseys) and amorphous liberalism (as White capitalist hegemony as explained by Gramsci salivates over) - then a movement is neutered. Hortense Spillers said Black culture is critical culture - she then went on to warn against losing this to capitalism.

If not for the Red Summer of would many of the Church leaders have been so bold relative to their society. We need to focus on common cause among different melanated people. Also, we need to move past French ideals of revolution and get to ideas of renewal like Piye in Kmt.
