First and foremost, the music is fantastic. But I feel compelled to comment on Greg Lake's physical presence. So masculine, so magnetic; simply a beautiful looking and sounding man.
Having already been a huge ELP fan as a kid in the 70’s, when I got this album as a Christmas gift it “blew my head apart”. No one saw me for the rest of that day. Hearing it now for the umpteenth time, it still reminds me of that day.
September, 1977, Little Rock, Arkansas, Works Volume I tour. They started the show with this, played about an hour, intermission, and then came back one at a time and did the complete double album. Then 2 encores. The best concert I ever attended, out of a couple of hundred. Springsteen in OKC, and Steve Miller and Fleetwood Mac at the Cotton Bowl came close.
I saw them at the Palace theater in Albany, NY in the later 90's. They were still fantastic and the most humble, sweetest band I've ever encountered ( and I've been to alot of shows) they actually came outside and signed albums, hugged fans... Just truly gracious. I still remember Greg Lake shouting " anyone got a shaaapie?" In his accent. A sharpie was quickly produced. Great great memory!
humble and nice. Or British, in other words! Lived in London 77 to 83 with a musician and 99% of all the other musicians where nice and humble. Lemmy, from Motörhead f.i., was the nicest, standing in a bar at the one armed bandits and buying drinks for anyone who approached him. Just one person, Brian Robertson, a guitarist, had the "don't you know who I am" attitude.
I was 10 when this was out. I heard them on radio and maybe they influenced me in my subconscious. Now I listen to "The Greatest Band Ever". They blended The symphonic sound to rock. Others tried but this is the closest, thanks to Keith, May you rest in peace MY DEAR SIR!
Saw them for the 1st time in Toronto in February 1978 with my friend and have not been able to shake their genius out of my head ever since! Thank you E, L & P for immeasurable enjoyment.
The work and talent they put in was phenomenal..It set the precedent for other bands..Todays music is more of the same ole stuff..Bring back creativeity..
This is one group I really regret not seeing in concert...what a powerhouse, with only three members. If I could go back in time, these guys would be the one, never mind Zeppelin or the Stones, but since I was a tad young at the time (15), my parents weren't about to take me to a rock concert.
I was fortunate enough to see ELP twice in smaller live concert theaters in the early 70s in my late teens and early 20’s at The Asbury Park Convention Hall in Jersey and the Orpheum Theater in Boston while studying as a piano major at Berklee College of Music…Emerson blew my mind with his virtuosity and over the top flamboyance as a theatrical performer…and both Lake & Palmer were both equally impressive…all performing the most technically complex classical & jazz influenced Rock music ever created with such ease…This inspired me to study & practice intensely developing a level of proficiency that served me for over 50 years as a professional performing keyboardist & vocalist…the level of musicianship in popular music in the 21st Century is pathetic in comparison and the level of creativity is no where near as close to what it was in the 60’s, 70’s and to some extent in the 80’s ….like most everything else in America and the Western World in general except for the creation of technological advancement, Humanity has become fat, lazy and steeped in moral decay…and our obsession and dependence on digital technology is at the root of it all…its very sad to see the mess my generation has made of it all and left to our children & grand children God Help Us 🙏🏻
@@petergeorgemusic At least you brought back some good memories... I brought my nephew to his first concert at the Asbury Park Convention Hall to see my favorite Jazz guitarist (who also just happens to be part of the Berklee College of Music Alumni) Pat Metheny/Pat Metheny Group. Check him out if you get a chance.
I really wish Emerson Lake and Palmer would get a Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame induction, but you might not know it, a lot of people just weren't too crazy about the group. Shame too, because From The Beginning is one of their best singles. Hopefully they'll see induction before Carl Palmer dies. I actually own Emerson Lake And Palmer, Trilogy, Works Volume 1, Works Volume 2, and Love Beach. In fact, I've been playing more guitar since Greg Lake died.
I saw them at the Hartford Civic Center that summer of 77 during the Works tour... I remember them doing Pirates and these cannons rising up behind the amps and firing confetti. I remember Emerson and his flying piano .. All in all an amazing concert.!!

I saw them in B'ham AL on this tour. If memory serves correct it started with a full orchestra which had to be dropped due to costs. The show must go on...and on it did, in glorious fashion.
Absolutely correct. The musicianship is apparent, in this video. My classical guitar teacher said, if you wake a master guitarist up, in the middle of the night, they can play and record any piece, just by muscle memory. WOW!
Only got to see them live once; Madison Wisconsin (I think). Would have been 1976 - 77 ish. Fantastic show. I remember Keith Emerson on a keyboard / synthesizer that rotated vertically - he was physically upside-down at times while he was playing and never missed a note.
The "Big O" is not far from where I grew up but I was just a kid then. No one around me knew (or talked about) Emerson ,Lake & Palmer. Oh well. I've seen other show and the live album is one of my favorite/ first. I like how Lake deliver it here. Good live groove. Not "pushing" like the studio version. He have a full show to deliver. But deliver a great and entertaining performance.
I only got to see them once but it was absolutely unforgettable. They featured a couple songs from Works, Vol. 1. It was an amazing amount of sound from three musicians.
Happy Birthday Carl Palmer born on March 20, 1950. He is an English drummer and percussionist, credited as one of the most respected rock drummers to emerge from the 1960's. He is a veteran of a number of famous English bands: the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Atomic Rooster, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and Asia. Inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1989, he was awarded "Prog God" at the 2017 Progressive Music Awards. - @t

This was my first concert and I think you are correct. This was "Karn Evil 9". I think the Works tour was also called, "Brain Salad Surgery." The opening act was Journey. I will never forget Greg Lake doing "Lucky Man" acoustic.
Dolly Parton makes the Rock and roll Hall of Fame and these guys don't something's wrong saw them on the Brain salad surgery tour stood about 12 ft from them fantastic show wish the hell they were still here I also hope that I can see Carl Palmer if I get a chance to I will I bet it's a good show be safe be peaceful

❤Greg was literally amazing in every way intelligent creative talented and just such an angelic ❣️ sexy man
Keith and Greg are often the focal points but Carl Palmer was and is an incredible drummer, period!

Paul, I agree that Carl is incredible! But Keith is second only to Jon Lord as a keyboard player!

How could ANYONE not like this song?
Agreed. You are beautiful.

Amen Andrew! Same thing happened to me!!! Saw them live numerous times and can remember like yesterday.
Keith was the JImi Hendrix of the synthesizer, Carl was a monster, and Greg added the melodic lyrics. Glad I saw them live.
Pete Sinfield Dont forget Pete !
I was at that show , was 16 my first rock concert, one word come to my mind WOW, elp addict after that date august 26 1977.

To me this song describes this world we live in to a tee.

One of the great progressive rock bands! The triple album was and still is one of my favorites!

I saw them on this tour in kansas City 1977 and they were fantastic - I was just in high school and it was my first concert experience - what a show!!
