Lyrics:
They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on earth
But instead, it just kept on raining
A veil of tears for the virgin birth
I remember one Christmas morning
A winter's light and a distant choir
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell
And their eyes full of tinsel and fire
They sold me a dream of Christmas
They sold me a silent night
And they told me a fairy story
'Till I believed in the Israelite
And I believed in Father Christmas
And I looked to the sky with excited eyes
'Till I woke with a yawn in the first light of dawn
And I saw him and through his disguise
I wish you a hopeful Christmas
I wish you a brave new year
All anguish, pain and sadness
Leave your heart and let your road be clear
They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on earth
Hallelujah, Noel be it heaven or hell
The Christmas we get we deserve

This is simply a track of pure beauty. In 1975, when I was eleven years old I announced to my Mum and Dad, sadly no longer with me, that this would always be my favourite Christmas song. And for once in my life, I was right. 46 years later, it still is. I don't mind admitting that the beauty of Greg's performance and the memories this evokes, never fails to bring a tear.
Thank You for sharing this with us.
Toyah Wilcox did a good version of this in the early 1980s.Track it down.Fantastic.
Mine too
Same for me Christopher only I was 15 in 1975, but totally the best Chritmas song.

Yaaaassss!!! Well said, Sir.
It's my miracle song. I suffered a miscarriage on Christmas Eve. At the hospital they confirmed this and scheduled a d&c for later that morning. I was set up to start the procedure when the doctor examining me said "you're still pregnant!" Say what? I guess it was twins and only one died. The other was born on7/4/86!

Sadly when you search this song on most streamers, the original Greg Lake version ranks below the covers. This is a true masterpiece and one of the best Christmas songs ever written. RIP Greg Lake.
He has the dubious honour of having died in the Great Cull of 2016.
Could not have said it better myself
Honeymoon Suite does a very worthy cover. Johnnie Dee hits a homer with the vocals!
Could not said it any better, you hit the nail on the head, as a none Christian this tells the truth.
Im not into Christmas songs, but this has a edge, great lyrics and true, as a non Christian this makes sense.
I'm 62 years old, been listening to this song for years and it still makes me cry, every time I watch the video, especially towards the end. RIP Greg and Keith

When I was 16 years old, in 1983, I sat in my car and listened to this song and cried. I had grown up, childhood was gone, the fairytales and promises had all been broken, but I was hopeful too. Very typical of Gen X, we grew up fast and saw through the lies early on, and this song summed it all up for me.... and I still remain hopeful all these years later. Merry Christmas everyone. Sending love and joy and prayers to you and yours!
This boomer wants you to know these feelings are universal. Every generation goes through them. We are so much more alike than different, never let the divisions of age, ethnicity, gender, nationality, or any other "difference" keep us from working together to right the wrongs and make our world a better place. There ARE good things happening, but you'd never know it when the media makes more money from doomscrolling. Blessed be!
... your post just made me cry

One of the most under-rated Christmas tunes out there. This is such a Masterpiece from the late Greg Lake.
@pandadarts180 You did actually listen to the lyrics, didn't you? It's not a traditional Christmas song by any means. It's melody and arrangement is a Trojan Horse that pulls the mask off Christmas and its phony trappings.
Jingle Bell Rock (The male version) is more underrated than this
Ahree
For sure
RIP Greg Lake. 🌲
In my humble opinion this is the greatest Christmas song ever written. It stands head and shoulders above all else. I'm a huge ELP fan and was lucky enough to see them live a couple of times. His voice was as good live as the recorded version. RIP Greg Lake, you had the voice of an angel.
One thing to note, though, is that it was built in the shoulders of a giant. It took the main theme from “Troika” by Prokofiev
Dont be humble........this is the best ever.....nothing comes close.

I felt a huge loss when he died bc he truly had one of the best voices of our lifetime.
I was at a Christmas concert once long ago and a middle school girl who looked very mousy and introverted who soloed this song with the choir backing up the chorus parts and she sang like an angel and she nailed it big time. Honestly, I guess my story is a bit messy compared to the ones I have read here BUT:
I was 12 years old and my Dad was working on a 1976 Monte’ Carlo. I “Borrowed” it on Christmas Eve Morning 1983…….. and drove around for awhile smoking cigarettes and being “cool”. It was raining that day and I I was sitting at a stop light crying my eyes out listening to THIS song. I am now 52 and still cry to this song. Merry Christmas and May God Bless ALL OF YOU AND YOURS. Peace friends.

The line "All anguish, pain and sadness.Leave your heart and let your road be clear" gets me every time. Isn't that what is really important in life? No how many presents you may get at Christmas, not material things. Having a life with less stress and more happiness is everything. Still the best Christmas song and a memory of childhood Christmases from the 70's and 80's.
Certainly the most powerful Christmas song ever recorded.
I was 11 when this was released. A new young teacher at school gave an assembly using this record. With the hall in near darkness except for the christmas tree lights, this played as we filed in. I had never heard anything so cool before. Brings a tear all these years later. Thank you Mr Baker hope youre safe and well wherever you are. I pick up my guitar and I play this tune every Christmas. My kids say “oh you’re playing that song again”? Let’s hope they learn to enjoy it as much as I do
keep playing it. When your kids get older they will associate the song with Christmas at home. The voice in their head will say "You know? This song of dad's is really pretty cool"
This is insane - pure genius. First of all, just to have conceived a song like this, then to go out and execute it so brilliantly.
He didn’t purely conceive it. Prokofiev wrote the main catch “Troika”. Though he sampled it well, I’ll give him that.
As a child of the 70s, I always loved this song - listening to this now, at 53 in 2023, the words truly hit me ❤

but in any case, respecto, sir: yes my parents are boomers too and i'm so lucky they've been here for all my years so far, wow, they made it look very easy when their parents passed away... i don't think i could handle nearly as well, a thing like that no matter how old i get to gettin'.. i'm already almost 58 and i think i'll never make it to anywhere near-their-age... nor do i think it's gonnabe real desirable _as-it-is-now-seen_ ... ha ha~
I still remember listening to this as a child and listening still today in 2023 great Christmas song
Greg Lake was probably the most unrecognised member of Emerson Lake and Palmer. For me this song shows off his talent, so much more than just a bass player. Listen to this song every Christmas (I'm 70) still loved still missed xx
No way was Greg Lake the most {unrecognized} band member; he was their “ voice “ for goodness sake, peace and carry on cheers :)
It wasn’t Christmas until this song was heard in our house growing up. 🥰
Yes same here what a song
I was born in 1972 and this song absolutely hits Christmas home to me. The instant I hear it I'm 7 or 8 years' old again.
I was born 2 days before Christmas that year. This is my favourite Christmas song.
72 here too. The year of the Rat. I remember hearing this as a young kid too and knew it was magic
75
i was born in 65 ,Memories bro Memories , pure feeling this tune.
I was 5 when this was out and my first Christmas that I could clearly remember. My Dad had spent hours, assembling a toy garage for me and I loved it for years. Bless him, all that and partially-sighted.
This song almost has me welling up now, some 45years hence, when I would love a brief jump back to see that particular time if only for a few hours so I could see my Mum again
THIS IS CHRISTMAS! Nothing else to add or diminish. Perfection of humanity found in the sublime art of the humble genius. Oh what a lucky man he was!
Also
A requiem for the peace on earth
RIP Greg Lake
"Hallelujah, Noel, be it Heaven or Hell, the Christmas we get, we deserve" !
Many years ago I was compelled to fill the instrumental break Troika during the outro when the child runs to his father with choral lyrics inspired by John and Yoko "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)". Please include them at 2:55
A very merry Christmas war is over only if you want it to be
Have a peaceful new year one without the fear
We can all live in harmony.
RIP Greg, wished I'd released these earlier I think you would've approved.
Thanks. I read those lyrics above (after the song had finished) and wondered if they'd left out words, but with correct punctuation, it makes sense.
Classic song..everyone deserves a good xmas...
So sad and cynical
One of the best Christmas songs ever written. The lyrics make you stop and think. Merry Christmas to everyone!
Some people are true visionaries, this guy proved that
All the modern christmas songs now feel like comercialized nonsense. There is no authenticity to them. This one you can really hear that he put his heart and soul into it. I enjoy how it starts with a simple tune and builds up to a roaring climax while delivering a heartfelt message.
4 years ago today he passed away. The best Christmas song but it doesn't get the airplay it deserves!. RIP Greg
This is THE song of the season this year! "Hallelujah Noel, Be it Heaven or Hell, the Christmas we get we deserve." Couldn't be more true of a statement.
We'll, Nick. We must not deserve much because most of us are getting royally fuct.
Feel blessed Nick! Blessings from Germany 🙋♀️
An abuse victim may be beaten into agreeing with you..
@@asnieres32 of course we don't deserve it.. human rats spreading this vial disease.
Amen!!
47 years old and still a timeless Christmas Classic, Enjoy 😀🌲🎅
i was 7 years old when this came out and it still makes me have a tear in my eye. i`m 6` 3` but still a softee for a great song.
Absolutely right
One of the best songs ever. This guy talked about how the world REALLY is. My Christmases.....from the beginning. I'm now 57..
Same age. And sadly so little changes every year
The father hugging his kid at the end just kills me. Tears.
Same here. I'm a Veteran and I think of all the Vets who shared this type of moment, and sadly those who never made it home. Peace my friend.
Peace to my fellow humans.
Christmas is upon us.

This is the first time I am hearing and seeing this ; Absolutely beautiful ; And , yes , tears well shed ...
Me too.
Thank god someone else acknowledges this moment, This moment still tears me up even to this day at age 19, That's what christmas is meant to be about, love and reunion
Greg actually wrote this, when he was a little kid. Shows you his genius.
There is no comparison with this song. Sums up all my childhood nostalgia.
My favourite Christmas song. The only one that tells the truth about the commercialism of Christmas. Despite the song's cynicism it leaves us with the message:- " I wish you a hopeful Christmas
I wish you a brave new year, All anguish, pain and sadness leave your heart and let your road be clear". RIP Greg Lake.
When this song first came out my little two years old niece was in hospital she had leukemia this was in the charts and it summed up what I thought about Christmas at that time. that was in the 1970's and that little girl is still with us. So anytime I hear the song that's where i am taken to a hospital bed with a scared little girl. God bless the NHS.
The first Christmas after my husband's bone marrow transplant (5 month ordeal) also for leukemia was a mixture of crying and laughing as we trimmed our tree. He was transplanted 1990 and also still with his family.
One of the best Christmas songs ever wrote and sang. Who else other than Greg Lake to perform this classic song. RIP Greg Lake.
This has always been my favourite Christmas song
its my LEAST favourate, bevause it calls the saviour a fairytale!!!!!!
@@ayounglivelysoulinanoldtir3512 To paraphrase John 10:37-38 slightly - ' If I am doing not the deeds of my father do not believe in me. If I am doing them and you will still not believe in me, believe in the work I do.'
18 when this came out still I cry…..
Brilliant, brilliant song. Doesn’t get the credit it deserves.
But we get the Christmas we deserve
Vincent haha - yes we certainly do.
Ask the average person about this song, the answer will be "Never heard"
Sad but true
There will always be room in my heart for Christmas 1975 xx
Lump in my throat at the boy running to his farther at the end x
RIP Greg...this is my favorite Christmas song...
