- Cast Iron Wednesday, December 7, 2022: Tonight we'll be having a discussion of cast iron size numbers. For many years the size number on a cast iron pan was not actually a description of its size, though that changed recently; in fact, there are many aspects of cast iron cookware that have to do with the size number on the pan. The size number is a marking on the pan that be used to identify it, especially with older vintage pans. Different manufacturers made their cast iron cookware with different standards, and because of this the size number could be inaccurate. And of course, different sized cast iron pans have different uses, and you can do things with a #14 sized skillet that you may not be able to do with a tiny #3 size skillet. There are many questions that can be asked about cast iron size numbers, and we'll be spending some time discussing this subject. We'll be working our way from the tiny #3 sized pans...and #2, and smaller pans...all the way up to the giant sized #14, and #16, and #20 pans and beyond. This is a UA-cam Live chat, and questions of all kinds about are encouraged...and answers are also encouraged. Feel free to comment, ask questions and answer them, as we have fun talking about cast iron tonight!

I just discovered your channel. You are an amazing resource to a new collector, like me :). You explained the reason behind modern rough surface that makes sense. I now have identified all of my great aunts skillets. Yes, i did have some BSRs as you said was likely. And my wagners are pre 60’s also! I treasure these skillets and was able to keep the old seasoning. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge!
Nice live CIC. Thank you again for having us in your new home. Funnn!!!
For me, I think continuing to use a CI skillet that was hand made by a millwright long dead, honors that person
My favorite and most used skillets are my 2 #7’s - 1 diamond 7 A and an unmarked Wagner.
Cic is groovy
I have a Wagner #1088 chicken fryer and I have had an impossible time finding the proper #1086 lid for the thing. I bought a #8 lid at a garage sale and yaaaaah it fit my #8 Lodge but NOT my #8 Wagner chicken fryer. Turns out after researching the lid it was made by Foster Stove and Range. But totally not compatible with the Wagner but fits the Lodge like a glove.
BTW, I dated a woman from Piqua, OH and she informed me the proper pronunciation was Fav-o-rite. I have only a #7 Favorite but it is smooth as glass and gets used all the time.
I didn't get notified even though I clicked to get notified
I can only say I don’t manage how the notifications are sent by UA-cam. I have had that happened to me too, I have missed notifications of video debuts that I wanted to see.
hello i am new own here i have a question sir i have a electric range it has a glass top would a skillit be to heavy for the glass .i have subscribed to your channel .
Don't overlook Victoria brand cast iron from Colombia, and of course there are several boutique low production volume USA manufacturers of cast iron cookware.
eBay should help people sell more pans
Is Stumpy a BSR?
Stumpy is a Birmingham Stove & Range "Century Cookware" series #14 sized skillet. He was manufacured somewhere bewtween 1967 and the early 1970s.
Oooff.. somebody’s F A B U L O U S 💅
I'm super, thanks for asking. 😜
I didn't know about the prison labor. But buying an 80-100 year old skillet is not supporting the practice, since everyone involved is dead. The people doing the exploiting aren't seeing a cent of our money.
I agree, it's not the same as the antique market for Nazi military memorabilia.
@@castironchaos Yeah. It's safe to assume that everybody mixed up in that is some kind of neonazi.
@@StellaWaldvogel I would disagree with this, but again it gets into a very messy subject. I'm just glad Nazi Germany never made cast iron pans with the swastika logo. If they did, then we would have seen many vicious arguments about them in the cast iron community.
@@castironchaos The messiest of subjects. And you may know something I don't, I honestly never delved into the market. But yes - it's wonderful that Nazi cast iron pans don't exist.
trade ya my #10 gris no damage, used twice, for your caldron. bring it with you to DC when you are driving south. i know you need a new gris to replace that old beater gris you bought off ebay, ....for $200...
I love my 20" Griswold skillet.
