Finding More Cast Iron at Brimfield: May 14, 2022

  • May 14, 2022: Back to the Brimfield Antique Show once again, in picture perfect warm weather, to search among thousands of antique vendors for cast iron cookware. If you want to build a special collection of cast iron for your kitchen, or simply to see an uncountable number of amazing sights and items to tempt you, then a visit to Brimfield is a must!
    Why did I spend the entire day browsing and only buy one single piece? My collection of cast iron is already too large, and I didn't have any reason to acquire five, ten, or fifty more Wagner and Griswold skillets. But, I hope to show here that even when most of the brand-name cast iron pieces are sold at Brimfield at exaggerated prices, you can still find quite a few unique and special pieces for yourself, if you do some digging and have patience. And yes, there are still bargains to be had, even if you're on a low budget. It's a lot of fun simply to browse there and see some incredible pieces of rare cast iron...and that makes it even more special to score something unique, at a price that won't break the bank for you.

    A great place to find cast iron is your local scrap iron place just found a 10" chicken fryer, a 10 " regular skillet and another 10" skillet plus a lid that will fit either of the skillets. I paid .30 cents per pound and it only cost me 6.00 dollars for all. Happy hunting.

    The ”Unknown stovetop cooker” at approximately 11.00 minutes looks VERY VERY Swedish!!
    A very common old style of Swedish stovetop cooker!

    I had some new Lodge and a big set of American Camper cast iron back in the 80's but wasn't really to impressed with them and knew some of the old stuff was just better and found many old cast iron at thrifts, etc. Didn't know about brands, just quality of cast and a smooth cook surface. I found a good bunch over time, but lost all but a couple of my American Camper and a Griswold dutch over with out a top, I use that mainly for making tortillas and have thought of cutting down the sides as they only get in the way, but not knowing if it was a collectable, never did. It's a bit sad they've gotten more collectable as they were often only like $2.50 each, years ago. I am going to start looking again and I'm sure deals are still to be found. I think a couple of the last ones I'd bought in the early 2000's were still under $5.

    I love Griswold as we all do but I'm getting so fatigued with the inflated pricing. Anything with the large block logo is automatically $125+ in my area regardless of the size or condition.

Maybe bc you got mainly what you desired already? You prep'd up when you found that fish cooker though like always. I had fun on this ride alone. Tkx.

    I enjoy watching all of your Brimfield videos as well as this latest dive into cast iron. But I’m left wondering how you manage lugging around all the iron you’ve purchased. Do you use a backpack? Wheeled cart? From all that left arm exertion, for our benefit, hopefully you iced it up when you got back to the car.

    I thought the diamond marked skillets (one of the 1st ones you picked up) were Chicago Hardware & Foundry?

    • @castironchaos
      @castironchaos  2 роки тому +2

      My understanding is CHF bought out Favorite in the late 1930s, and those "number in diamond" skillets were among the last pans produced by Favorite. Or so the theory goes.

    This was a nice collection of cast iron items. But the price on these cast iron items is ridiculous. I would like to share a bit of news with you and I can speak with a long history of knowledge. An, Old cast iron skillet/pot/pan at $100 from whatever manufacturer will cook NO better than a brand new Lodge at $25. Deny all you want, that's OK. Either way, Old or New there is going to be some work on either one (old or new) to get it the way you like. Good Luck.

    I need some advice please and be brutal but honest...It seems everyone thinks Griswold is over priced but are the prices we all see at flea markets actually realistic? I have 3 of them numbers 3 6 and 8 the 3 say number 709 under it and number 6 says 699 and number 8 says 754 I also have a Lodge number 6 has 65k on it and 8F and 8z on lid...then a Wagnerware sydney 0 number 6 and 2 weird ones, one says classic and its a number 6 and the other says Emeril size 10 could you tell me values please and what I should put on pricing Thanks in advance, Tom

    What is the point of buying old rusty cast iron at these prices, when new is cheaper and does not need the work required to get them ready for use? Interesting video though.

    • @castironchaos
      @castironchaos  Рік тому +2

      In many cases, it's actually less expensive to buy new. The panbs seen here are (usually) vintage antiques with a high collector value. They're also seen by many people as being of better quality than modern day cast iron pans. I disagree with this in terms of quality; but there's a real appeal to owning and using vintage cast iron. Similar to the people who put huge amounts of time and effort into rebuilding old cars.

    Do the dealers actually get the high prices? or do they come down any in price to make the sale.It's one thing to ask a lot of money but do people buy at those prices ?

    • @castironchaos
      @castironchaos  2 роки тому +1

      Haggling is a way of life at places like Brimfield, and you can usually get the dealer to drop his prices slightly.

    It's nonsense that they are asking those prices at Brimfield when you have so many guys selling so much within steps of one another and they are asking full on internet prices. Like more than what they would get on ebay after fees...I doubt elephant's trunk flea is any better...

      There is certainly can be vintage Asian cast-iron. Asian cast-iron has been imported into the United States since at least the 1960s, and probably the 1950s.
