What a breath of fresh air! An EV without gimmicky flush door handles! I'd go with Chery for sure! The infotainment screen looks cleaner than ugly BYD stuck on rectangle in the middle as well.

E5 is already sold in Serbia ,yesterday on Serbian TV (there is also on UA-cam ) was test between Omoda E5 vs Omoda Gas version , on race track E5 won ,also won in brake test with big margin which is kind off surprising considering is heavier

Hey Viking, love your videos. Can I ask that when you review new EVs for Australia that you detail the local support that is set up to serve owners of new models here. I ready to be impressed by increased range or faster charging, or lower prices but most buyers need to know that the importer has a solid support presence in Aus too.

One thing i notice good thing about Omoda 5 is it has spare tire
negative thing? It a multi platform, has ICE/Hybrid version so it has its own drawbacks including what they did with battery, not that different than Citroen but how BYD do theirs are way superior.

@electricviking….you do a great and thorough job on EV updates…one thing though…with Canadian/US tariffs and to a lesser extent EU tariffs most of the EV’s in China will never make it to our shores.
Added to that, shrinking sales even in China mean that the majority of these companies won’t make it.
It seems lots of good info coming but relevance starting to lack more & more. Just a thought.

Fast charging when you can otherwise charge at home is not that important - charge off peak over night, or limit it to what your solar can output during the day. In the 12 years of driving electric, I've only needed to charge external to my home 2 times. The fast charging is nice, but if I had the choice, I'd much rather the ability to charge at 22kw AC on 3 phase; I'd use this every day. That would be far more useful.

It seems the channel has transformed itself into a China centric EV information source; I guess it makes sense for an Australian website. I really enjoy the updates on the battery technology even if they do come mostly from China.

The rear passengers have more foot space under the front seat. That makes sitting at the rear of the E5 more comfortable than Atto 3.

I, too, do not understand why people want larger wheels on BEVs. The manufacturers persist in putting them on cars, reducing the range and often the comfort. I think the other motoring journalists must take the blame. They always talk about large wheels looking good. I think thin tires look ugly myself.

Hello Sam, thank you for your reporting.
I have a question, what about rental cars? In America, the rental car companies have decided electric car rentals don’t seem to be popular, and they’re getting rid of their EV’s.
I own an EV, but would never take it on a road trip. We rent ice cars If we have to drive any distance. Is it similar in other parts of the world?

    • @mearino
      @mearino 3 місяці тому

You have a few parts to your question. I drive my model s to canberra from melbourne with no issue because the supercharger network is so good. If you own a non-Tesla, that may be why youre afraid to go long trips because the charging options have been so poor, but improving with access to Tesla network. Rental problems in US had several dimensions: falling value of EV fleet due to price wars meant depreciation hit was bigger and made company finances look worse; lots of people renting EVs had no education so messed up charging; EVs being so quick led to higher accident rate; lack of after market spare parts for Tesla meant repaira were costlier.

The Omoda E5 is nicer and cheaper. Interior is just superb, and in the gasoline version, it is noticeably quieter. It has double-glazed windows.
However, Chery is that regional government-owned business (Anhui Province) that is pretty gaudy and still penchant to shamelessly copying design. No matter how pro-China you are, you still can't help but see a lot of Lexus IS in their Arrizo 5 Pro (The 5 Plus has previous gen Hyundai grille style). You can see Wikipedia or CarNewsChina on what models they churn out - a lot of them are still copied (e.g. VW front fascia). It is difficult to understand why they need to do this, when they can design something as original as Omoda or Tiggo. Must be that provincial Chinese boomer shanzai mentality. That alone easily made me pick the more expensive and slightly weirder Atto 3 over Omoda E5.
BYD is Shenzhen free trade zone-based, private owned business, and they hired Wolfgang Egger of Alfa Romeo fame to design their cars.
In Indonesia, Omoda E5 became the best selling EV in H1 2024, dethroning Wuling/Baojun Air EV - that is when BYD still haven't been delivered to customers yet. It is 5-star Euro NCAP rated, well-built car (unless you count those Malaysian model with faulty wheel axle).
The software is a bit superior to Atto 3, much fancier driving assists like auto blind spot camera switch on with 3D model of your car, whenever you flick the turning signal and there are objects outside your rear field of vision. Kinda like having a video game-like side chase cam view while you perform a difficult maneuver. So you can see where is that sneaking motorcycle/bicycle or pedestrian in relative to your car's position. It also tells you in centimetres, how much distance you have with the wall or other car when you park in narrow space.
