And i agree with you about the regeneration it's not up to it, and the tugging on the wheel so basically i agree with all you have said and your review is the best I've watched so far 👍👍
They need to make the "driver assist" stuff so that it takes the hint if you fight it even if the lane keeping gets fixed. Touch screens in a cold climate can be trouble. Your exactly bang on like a tasty bit of appealing cake you bite into it and then are disappointed. So wanted to like it for a purchase with all the pluses you mentioned. But how someone signed off the software for this. The throttle progression the regen and braking just don’t gel. I felt sick too and so glad to get in the smooth MG again. Even the dealer agreed. Omoda have lost a lot of sales I imagine over these issues. Thanks Sam👍
Nice review, thanks. I’m looking to test drive one myself in NZ soon. With regard to the software issues and the opinion of possibly being fixed with an update, have you spoken to Chery about it? I’d be interested to see what they say and if they plan on addressing the issues in the near future.

For those who don't have solar, does Australia have a system whereby it is cheaper to charge EVs (i.e., use electricity) at night or during off peak hours?
because we have such high solar uptake, the wholesale price can be negative during certain times. Some power companies leverage this to offer $0 electricity for 2-3 hours around midday if you have an EV plan. I have free power 12-2 which is enough to put ~12 or so kWh into my EV on a 7kW charger
Think chery is the most practical with spare wheel charging port location and infotainment display seems better all in one than two separate screens But probably need to wait maybe a model or two down the line
Sam, good criticisms and observations. As you probably know I drove that exact car about 500km during my week with it including my test loop where I concluded its real range is about 350km, and you picked up a lot of the same faults I did. While we did like some aspects - notably the ride and the interior, other critical things - the software calibration for regen, electric steering, throttle delivery and numerous other things were only half-finished. All things that Chery can fix with a software upgrade (shame the car doesn't support OTA updates) but at the moment - it feels like nobody at the factory bothered to test it and no way can I recommend this car. Here's our review in case you missed it: ua-cam.com/video/VHChZJJqdFs/v-deo.html
I think in my country this car sells good with no user complaints about driving comfort. Regen braking mostly used is 1 or 2 because with just release of Trottle pedals it slowed down the car smoothly and with very light additional brake pedal press just touching the brake switch ,it will activate more regen braking without using the brake pad. This is the way fot smooth driving. Regen level 3 is not usefull, to strong. Electric steering and trottle delivery is normal in my country. everything works smoothly . Maybe software version is different.
In order to be compatible with the driving habits of traditional fuel vehicles, Chery prohibits the accelerator pedal opening to control the strength of kinetic energy recovery, but can set three levels of kinetic energy recovery strength. When the accelerator pedal is completely released, the kinetic energy recovery strength can only be carried out according to the set value. Omoda E5 uses the IPB brake system provided by Bosch. If you need to continue to strengthen the power recovery strength, you can adjust it by stepping on the front part of the brake pedal. This kinetic energy recovery system of Chery is very easy to use in actual use. When testing vehicles, reviewers like you should read the driving manual more and understand the performance of the vehicle, instead of self-righteously throwing out your own naive opinions.
@@kindness-villain You wouldn't say that if you'd seen the driving manual that came with the car. 280 pages of Chenglish. Clearly written in Chinese and loosely translated and not proof-read by a native English speaker. An no mention in the entire thing about regeneration, how to select it, change it, how it's used, what it does. So I politely suggest you can skip the "self righteous" comment unless you've done your homework. Which in this case it seems you haven't. And as for "the front part of the brake pedal"? As opposed to ...? What other part of the brake pedal would you like the driver to push? Back? Middle? Left side? Top? Look it's not a bad car in many ways but the Regen system needs calibration. It needs work. Bosch or not, It's not good. It's nowhere near good as many rival vehicles. Mainly because of the jerkiness and that it takes too long to respond to driver inputs. It's not technique related Mr Kindness-Villain. The good news is - it's probably just software so easily fixable. But Sam is right - Max level Regen is unusable.
@@inCARnationAustraliaThe difference between the third-level kinetic energy recovery and the first-level kinetic energy recovery is not so obvious. I have said it very clearly. The third-level kinetic energy recovery strength set by the system in the Chery electric car is only auxiliary. The strong kinetic energy recovery strength is adjusted linearly by the pedaling amplitude of the brake pedal. This is also the most suitable braking method for fuel vehicles. Just because you can't adjust the power recovery strength through the brake pedal does not mean that others will not use it. Why didn't users of Omoda E5 in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Spain mention this problem? I have been driving the Chery Exed LX Phev for two years and I am very satisfied with its power recovery method. The only dissatisfaction with the braking system: when the vehicle speed drops to 8km/h during braking, the kinetic energy recovery will automatically exit, and only the mechanical brake will continue to work, and the car will nod.
Sam himself reported BYDs coming to Oz with rust in panels of new cars. Who makes cars without galvanized metal these days? BYD evidently. My point was that 600km road tests show very little about the longevity and quality of a product; even crash tests will be of the best of the vehices they make; they are not going to submit vehicles with missing welds for example when perhaps 20% of the vehicles they sell to the public are getting out with such terrible flaws - this is due to a massive lack of QA in chinese car makers part look up Statistical Quality control or Deming and you'll see why Japanese companies have risen to be the top quality brands.
Chery is currently selling very low quality in Mexico, the omoda are the worst, transmission, engine, electrical issues and dealerships aren't able to fix them
All the models that Chery sells have been tested on the road for millions of kilometers. Moreover, Omoda E5 is not the first electric model produced by Chery. It has more than ten years of experience in the research and development and production of electric vehicles. I think the questions raised by Viking are because they do not fully understand the characteristics of the model and have not communicated with Chery engineers. They are all very subjective.
I'm sorry but you're understanding of regen breaking is incorrect. When you apply the brakes you are taking manual control of the regen breaking as illustrated on the plus minus power meter. Brake pads don't apply until regen brake not adequate.
@@paulc6766The kinetic energy recovery system of Chery Automobile adopts Bosch IPB system. Due to the major safety hazards of single pedal mode, Chery prohibits the use of it. The intensity of energy recovery can be controlled by the pedaling force in the front part of the brake pedal travel. The mechanical brake pad will only intervene when the brake pedal travel enters the middle part.
The key problem with short reviews even 600 miles - is it tells you nothing about the build quality and longevity of the vehicle.Example: Chinese makers are under pressure to use chinese made bearings - so? So they are not durable; China is unable to make the high quality steel and bearings that help make a car last. In 600 miles; you would hope you would not need parts or service - is there any? Many new Chinese brands have zero service stations or parts for repair them with; so you can't evaluate their service. Even Tesla has very limited repair and parts capabiity. It's like trying to judge a book by it's cover - you can't judge the key matters.
You know nothing about Chinese cars. The bearings used in Chery cars are all provided by nsk and skf The body frame, which is very important for car safety, uses more than 80% hot-formed steel and high-strength steel, and is provided by Germany's Benteler. The paint automatic spraying equipment is from Germany's Durr, and the body paint is supplied by DuPont.
In my country chinese car has been around for 6 to 7 years. And no problem within that period. Chery engine also has 10 years or 1mio km of warranty here. Lots of my friends are happy with their chery.
@@hadisoewoyo8739 Im not really addressing BYD or Chery except for BEVs - Chery and BYD make cars other than BeVs - plusCherry isn't public so you can't tell if it makes any money. They are considering going public and having stock. China made this problem. It gave 1/3 Trillion to incentivise new BEV companies. They initially had 500 BeV startups and still have 100. These are dragging down Chinese car quality in general but bEVs specifically because they are trying to survive by low price cutting every corner to try and survive - very bad situation for all.
I would not want an EV if flooding comes back as it did in Brisbane a few years back. This has been highlighted by the recent hurricanes in America. Burnt out EVs everywhere.
So you are willing to sit in a metal box with an 800-volt power pack under your seat sitting in water. It was worse when storm surges brought salt water into contact with the battery. Also several cases of people drowning in submerged EVs due to door locks not functioning. One was a Tesla in America that reversed into a pond on a ranch. A female driver sadly died.
This is why I'm glad you guys (in AU) can beta test the Chinese cars, it will take them years to get the details to work, like Tesla needed years to get the car features like parking assist and all the other stuff that needed to get better.
#cancerawareness month . just a reminder .. Carcinogenesis begins right Here,,, Why are so many young non-smokers getting cancer? The main toxins found in vehicle exhaust include: carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), benzene, formaldehyde, hydrocarbons, and depending on the fuel type, some levels of sulfur dioxide, with carbon monoxide being considered the most significant toxic component in exhaust fumes.
This is not a finished product. This is the fear I personally have about point to point Chinese cars. Chinese cars should be sold through established brands like Toyota and Nissan. The way Buick and Volvo are doing. Those companies can fine tune and weed out problems like re-gen. They will also provide an established service network. After fine tuning the Chinese brands can stand on their own. Cars like this are going to give the Chinese a bad reputation.
@FrankiePo89 The Chery Omoda 5, introduced in China in the second quarter of 2022, has experienced varying sales figures over the past two years. In 2022, a total of 8,258 units were sold. However, in 2023, sales declined to 3,538 units. In May 2024, Chery reported a significant increase in sales, reaching 188,556 vehicles globally, a 35.5% year-on-year rise. Of these, 92,481 units were exported. While specific sales figures for the Omoda 5 in May 2024 are not detailed, the overall growth indicates a positive trend for Chery's vehicle lineup.
@FrankiePo89 Exactly, that's my point-while the Omoda might do well in markets outside China, it is clearly not equipped to withstand the intense competition in China's automotive market.
High-mileage electric car usage is working out almost twice as expensive as petrol What’s promised isn’t always what you get with electric cars - my 11,000 miles in Ford Mustang Mach-E proved it’s far from an EV panacea This is the headline from one of the Telegraphs writers. And even better, he would rather drive his Honda Civic Type R since it is more efficient and better on the highway than an EV. Oh and EV owners in the UK are being told not to use portable heaters in their EVs since they lose so much range in the freezing cold. Gas wins again.
@ not here it won’t. And most cities around the world realize that so they won’t be bringing that in either. And think about it, if delivery companies can’t get into the city, how fast will they and those companies that rely on them pack up and leave the city? It’s already happening in Toronto and other major cities, how fast will those cities stop with those bans? They can’t survive without those businesses and delivery companies
I can’t speak to your exact circumstances but here in Australia I’ve done 48,000 km of mostly freeway driving in 18 months in a Tesla model y. Lifetime usage is 162wh per kilometre which works out at $4.20 per 100km or about 1/4 the cost of fueling a similar size car. Superchargers work out at about $9 per 100km which is still cheap. Tyres cost a little more but I have saved a lot on service costs. I would be wary of media reports as one can structure a test to achieve any outcome desired. Here in Australia the daily mail did a test using one of the worst ev available and compared it a diesel version of the same and also didn’t have access to the only comprehensive fast charging network and complained about slow charging and excessive electricity usage. I was rather impressed at the amount of research they would have done to find the outcome they were looking for. The only issue being having done the research they would have been fully aware of dishonest nature of the story being told.
@ last December a news reporter from Chicago wanted to see his daughter in New York City and he took a model Y. A coworker went with him to document the travel and charging time. He recorded the Tesla was lying about the full charge. He would spend an hour at the Tesla charging stations along the way and the car never got the estimated range. It was always half of what it said. 300 miles, he would travel 150 on a full charge. 200 miles, he would travel 100 miles on the full charge. It took them an extra day to get to New York City. Absolute crap of a vehicle. It shows Tesla is not a car manufacturer but a software manufacturer.
@@kevinW826 So the westerners keeping the city clean brouhaha are just a farce? They've spent so much of your taxpayers money all for nothing? Are you fuming and did you bring it up to your representative?
Stick with Tesla. Chinese ev brands are inferior in every aspect. The price differences are insignificant. Consider that the model Y is proven as the safest vehicle and reliable.

@@kindness-villain Hey thanks for reply. You sound like the guy who wrote the owners manual
Chery is currently selling very low quality in Mexico, the omoda are the worst, transmission, engine, electrical issues and dealerships aren't able to fix them
The software is still in beta, this is why they are many issue.
I know you don't like NIO's CEO, but could you give an honest review on ONVO?
Sam's confused: Kids, Chemo, Jet lag....Try again..or disregard.
Sam, you just busted a cherry!
They probably gave you the car to test and tell them where all the bug bears are .
Pickups in your country look weird!😮
lol i thought you typed Chevy
If you use the car while charging, the charging speed will be reduced!😅
I'm sorry but you're understanding of regen breaking is incorrect.
When you apply the brakes you are taking manual control of the regen breaking as illustrated on the plus minus power meter.
Brake pads don't apply until regen brake not adequate.
Are you talking about this particular car?
@@kindness-villain I'll accept that - go and list the chinese BEV companies that use German bearings - it will be a very short list wont it?
You might be totally wrong. A proper seal EV is more water proofing than patrol cars. Check the BYD yang wang U8, it can floating on the river.

The car looks like a toy with you crammed in.
Driving into people's backyard and pool. Lol
This car flopped in China for a reason, which is likely why the manufacturer is now targeting markets outside of China.
Please show.

Yes, I've read up on their sales increased. Withstanding the EV competitions in China itself is just crazy and not for the faint hearted.
@FrankiePo89 Exactly, that's my point-while the Omoda might do well in markets outside China, it is clearly not equipped to withstand the intense competition in China's automotive market.

High-mileage electric car usage is working out almost twice as expensive as petrol
What’s promised isn’t always what you get with electric cars - my 11,000 miles in Ford Mustang Mach-E proved it’s far from an EV panacea
This is the headline from one of the Telegraphs writers.
And even better, he would rather drive his Honda Civic Type R since it is more efficient and better on the highway than an EV.
Oh and EV owners in the UK are being told not to use portable heaters in their EVs since they lose so much range in the freezing cold.
Gas wins again.
And gas won't win in the cities when the no-entry kicks in.

Stick with Tesla. Chinese ev brands are inferior in every aspect. The price differences are insignificant. Consider that the model Y is proven as the safest vehicle and reliable.
Little do you know many Tesla is actually made in China.
Why would uass and eu be afraid of an "inferior" product and have to counter it with extreme tariffs?
Have you driven the chery exeed sterra et or the huawei luxeed r7? do you have any evidence that the tesla model y is better than them?
