Barsk, though teeeechnically not a standalone, it is wrapped up really well as if it is one. It's a sci-fi about elevated animals and follows an elephant that can speak to the dead.
With all these mythology retellings, how could you not mention Circe by Madeline Miller? ;) I also suggest Sistersong (Arthurian inspired) and The invisible life of Addie LaRue (though this is not precisely a typical fantasy, but I would not know how else to categorize it).
This might be cheating but I would add Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky to the conversation. It is really short at just under 200 pages and technically sci fi, but falls in to the category of "what if your science was so advanced that the native population thought it was magic?" It handles some fantasy tropes, particularly that of the wise old wizard, in new and interesting ways IMO.
Great list!! I saw some of my favourites on here and also discovered some new reads to check out :) Thanks for the list and your well thought out descriptions of each. I always find your descriptions so helpful for me in choosing new books to read. You’re absolutely fabulous at being able to recommend books to others that weren’t necessarily your own cup of tea. I really appreciate that about your videos. Keep up the great work! You’re very much appreciated!
This video couldn't have come at a better time. 🤩 I have been in a reading slump for a while now and just today I was thinking of reading a fantasy standalone and now I have so many to pick from. Thank you! 💜

The wolf in the whale by Jordanna Max Brodsky is criminally underrated, it follows an Inuit person born with their fathers soul in their body so it covers not only an interesting mythology as we start with inuit and have Norse raiders, but Omat has to come to terms and fully accept their genders (they choose both depending on their tasks as at the time it’s very segregated). I just read it last month after having it for years and I can’t believe I waited so long
It's an interesting read! However, please read it with the fact that the author is a white woman writing about a culture (many parts of which are closed) that she is not a part of in mind
I didn't realize Sword of Kaigan or Best Served Cold were stand-alones. They just moved up a lot on my TBR! I'll have to feature them on my channel once I read them!
While Best Served Cold is a standalone you're gonna miss a lot of context if you haven't read the trilogy before. Like it's possible but you're gonna be left wondering about things

Thanks for the recommendations 😊 Some of these I already read them but I'll add the others to my TBR that with every of your videos is getting larger 🤣
Excellent and better researched than most of these, thank you. I would also recommend other Neil Gaiman novels like Neverwhere, a total delight, and The Graveyard Book, a Jungle book retelling. I just read Piranesi and that would fit the bill in many ways. The Rithmatist, a middle grade by Brandon Sanderson, has such an interesting “magic” system. The invisible live of Adie Larue by Schwab also comes to mind. And I plan on picking up The library at Mount Char next, fingers crossed, it seems hit or miss with many.
I really enjoyed Sword of Kaigen and Never Die. I also recommend Pawns' Gambit by Rob Hayes. I have ordered Ariadne. This isn't a standalone( I thought it was when I bought it) but I did really enjoy Blood Scion too.
Didn't realize Sword of Kaigan was a standalone. Have been really interested in reading it but knowing it is not another series makes me even more interested.
I'm writing a standalone and I'm 16 years old. The book is called Journey Over Snow (haven't decided yet lol), but I'm in really important exams and I just cant help write instead of study. Even though I'm in the young adult category, I'm trying to make this adult because I'm more into adult fantasy
I love standalones! Does it matter whether you read Spinning silver or Uprooted first? I've heard some people say that you should start with Uprooted because they liked it better but Spinning silver speaks to me more😅
You already know how I feel about Sword of Kaige, everyone should read it, especially moms who like fantasy! The Witch's Heart sounds great, I pre-ordered it when it came out and still haven't read it though.... Need more time in the day for sure!
The inheritance of Orquidea Divine was good, but it wasn't what I was expecting. I didn't realize it was magical realism when I chose it to read so it was a little bit of a let down because I wanted more fantastical elements at the time of reading. Ocean at the End of the lane is really great too, Neil Gaiman books are always a vibe and most of them are stand alones.
Wait so Never Die is a standalone? I remember i was interested in it, and upon searching for it i found out it's part of a series called Mortal Techniques. Is it one of those "series" where all the books are standalones but happen in the same universe?
You will find a lot of fantasy authors create a universe and place stand-alone novels there. Terry Pratchett, David Gemmell and Andre Norton all did this. Marion Zimmer Bradley did a number of stand alones in different universes if memory serves.
I read this recently and was absolutely enchanted which was wonderful because I so nearly didn’t bother with it. Easily one of the best and most life-affirming books I’ve read in a long time.
Temple of No God (Hall of Smoke #2) follows Hessa, the main woman from the first. It looks like #3 doesn't and follows a different character, so maybe they meant that one was the companion?
I feel people don't give Elantris enough credit because it isn't as good as the Stormlight Archive, when *many, many* books are not not as good as SA. It's kinda unfair to judge it that way. Like, it's a lot of talking and not much action, so that's a fair criticism, but overall, I loved it. 😁
Elantris is a _good_ book, and yes it isn't action packed, but many people like books that aren't too action packed, including me, literature is best when we explore characters and themes and enjoy the writing, and yes Elantris is fast paced and Sanderson's a bit more amateur work, as it is his first book, but it is definitelly a _good_ book. Because Sanderson is a masterful writer people compare it to his other books but I agree that Elantris is a good read!
I am in the middle of Elektra and enjoying it. Reminds me of The Silence of the Girls as far as telling the story from the female POV during the Trojan War.
I enjoyed it and I think it helps to flesh out why Patroclus would love Achilles bc I know you felt that was an iffy storyline in The Song of Achilles (I still need to read that one!).
Lately I'm getting vibes that you throw out the same videos with almost the same books but add 1 or 2 different books into the mix. I understand content creating around books can be challenging when there is only a certain amount of books to go through that are your favs/recommended/classics/popular etc. I really enjoy your videos and I don't want this to be a negative thing, its more of a critique and I hope you understand. *Edited* Not saying you don't do different book content videos. I'm meaning more about the videos like 'Beginners to Advanced Fantasy Books' and 'Fantasy Standalones' 'Fantasy Recs' and then you go and watch them and its like watching your old videos all over again or you've mentioned the same thing in a different video etc. (Again I understand it would be very hard as a content creator to make things fresh and appealing for people like me who have watched you for a while and I appreciate the effort you put into your videos!)
An Indian subscriber of mine said it’s pronounced differently (not saying you’re incorrect, just that I’ve had other subscribers tell me different pronunciations)
this is like the second video of yours that i watch, i think, so i checked all your entries and looks like you focus on fantasy, but in this list you kingfisher that i know she writes more horror stuff and also that book from gaiman that is kind of horror, i dont get the horror on most of gaiman horror writting tho, so short story long, can you please do more horror, im sick of people doing list of horror books and the entire list is s. king books, wich horror i also dont get to understand. p.s: pls excuse my awful english.
I'm interested in reading "the Wolf and the Woodsman"- I'm half Hungarian and as I read the sample, I noticed the author used a lot of real Hungarian words...it makes me curious and hesitant at the same time. As far as I know the author is not a native speaker, and it can be tricky to use a language that way. This is supposed to be a fantasy made-up country, right? So, using a real-world language can pull the reader out of the fantasy if they understand the actual words. Don't know if I explain that correctly. For example, she uses the word "Ördög" and explains in the same sentence that it is the God of the Underworld. And in my head, I'm just like "yeah, I know- it's literally Devil in Hungarian." I don't know if it will bother me as the story continues or if it fizzles out.
I am reading Electra it is SO GOOD! Plus the witches heart ♥️ too so good xoxo 😘 🤍💓❤️♥️💔📖📖📚💞❤️🔥❤️🩹💛💓🖤🌈📖📖🌈💜💜💔📚📚💜📖🌈💜📚💝❤️💓💛🖤❤️❤️🔥🧡❣️❤️🩹💛💖💖❤️🩹❤️♥️💞💔📚💜🌈📖📖🌈📚💞💞♥️🖤💓🖤❤️💝💝🧡❣️💛💛❣️💘🤎💙💗

The Resurrectionist was a really cool historical fantasy(ish) horror that I enjoyed.

The wolf in the whale by Jordanna Max Brodsky. About a viking like culture invading Inuit lands.
The highest circle of heaven is reserved for fantasy authors who write standalones. We seriously need more of these!
Exactly. I def perfer standalones
There are plenty but you need to look to older writers like Terry Pratchett, Terry Brookes and earlier.
Neil Gaiman

Sword of Kaigen is INCREDIBLE .
I'm always excited for more fantasy standalones
Haha, me too 😆
Thank-you for so many wonderful choices! You've given such varied choices too, which is even more helpful.❤️
The Bone Orchard sounds super interesting and wasn't on my radar! Ill be adding it to my tbr
I hope you like it! It’s definitely very different. It might’ve been a little too different for me personally, but hopefully you’ll love it 😄
Yay more recs I’m curious to try Naomi Novik one of these days 🤔
I'm 60% into the Priory of the Orange Tree and I'm loving it so far.
I adored The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina! I don't hear very many people talking about it. I also absolutely love the TJ Klune and the Naomi Novak books. I need to pick up some of these other books.
Both of the books by Tj Klune are really good! I enjoyed both of them!
You rearranged your shelves again! Thanks for this great video and list :)

This is a great list! I'm really interested in the mythological ones.
Guy Gavriel Kay (GGK) is my personal favourite Standalone Fantasy Writer!
I know a lot of people love Tigana :D
This is an excellent video! such a good topic as a fantasy reader who doesn't always have time to read long epic series!
Came here because I needed some Standalones to read. Left with five 😄 Thanks!!
Sword of Kaigen was one of the BEST standalone fantasy books I’ve ever read! I 100% recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy.
Yay! It’s great 😄😄😄
Love your book recs but can never read quick enough to keep up!!
Hey, that’s ok! I just hope you find books you’ll end up loving 😄

The Graveyard book is so good. I was so surprised I loved it as much as I did.
I love Elantris! Good tips for us! Ya fantasy is the hunter and the Legend of the Cauldron of Fire
oh hell yeah. cannot wait to watch this tonight.
Standalones!!! Love them!! Thank you for your recommendations🤗
You’re very welcome ☺️☺️☺️
I really love Clive Barker's novels Imajica and weaveworld. They're both really imaginative and great.
They are magical💜
Cool. Thanks for this, I am not a huge fan of series. Trilogies I don’t mind, but series’ can be daunting, especially in fantasy.
They definitely can be!
BRB, going to add all of these to my TBR! 👏🏻
I hope you find some you enjoy 😄
Read Nettle and Bone, great book ! thanks for the recommendation
Awesome t-shirt !!
Thank you! 😄
great video, thank you so so much!
Finished Sword of kaigen yesterday. oh man what a great read. Instant Favorite.
Yay! I’m so glad you liked it 😄
I really enjoyed Sword of Kaigen and Never Die. I also recommend Pawns' Gambit by Rob Hayes. I have ordered Ariadne. This isn't a standalone( I thought it was when I bought it) but I did really enjoy Blood Scion too.
I recommend The Girl Who Drank the Moon as a standalone fantasy (is YA but not I still really enjoyed it)
Didn't realize Sword of Kaigan was a standalone. Have been really interested in reading it but knowing it is not another series makes me even more interested.

I hope you enjoy it! I’m glad you loved Witch’s Heart 😄
Curious..when you read a trilogy etc do you read book 1 til the last book or break it up with stand alone in between?
Really enjoy your videos!
Because I already have 100 series I haven't finished and don't want to start a new one! 😂
I feel that, have read multiple first books of a series and don't know when I will get around the other ones...
Same 😅😅😅
Great video!
Hey Elliot, great list. Can you please make a video about some 21st century novels which have both science fiction and fantasy elements in it?
Loved Sword of Kaigen!
I love standalones!
Does it matter whether you read Spinning silver or Uprooted first? I've heard some people say that you should start with Uprooted because they liked it better but Spinning silver speaks to me more😅
Not at all; they’re totally separate stories.

The inheritance of Orquidea Divine was good, but it wasn't what I was expecting. I'm really excited to read Spinning Silver. Bought it because of you. Also, Ariadne's writing fell flat for me - anyone else feel the same way?
I really enjoyed the writing itself, but the characters at times REALLY annoyed me 😅
Battle Mage by Peter Flannery is one I'd recommend.
spinning silver is superior
To Uprooted? I definitely agree 😂

I read this recently and was absolutely enchanted which was wonderful because I so nearly didn’t bother with it. Easily one of the best and most life-affirming books I’ve read in a long time.
You missed one. The Library at Mount Char.
I love Elise Korva. Even her series are awesome.
I’m glad you enjoyed it so much! I get what you mean :)
I want to read Nettle and Bone so badly! It seems so cool
I hope you end up liking it!!! 😄
My favorite stand alone is Robin McKinley's only adult fantasy that I am aware of "Sunshine"
I am in the middle of Elektra and enjoying it. Reminds me of The Silence of the Girls as far as telling the story from the female POV during the Trojan War.
I haven’t read that one!
I enjoyed it and I think it helps to flesh out why Patroclus would love Achilles bc I know you felt that was an iffy storyline in The Song of Achilles (I still need to read that one!).
Could you suggest some vampire novels that are not romantically focused just business
Spinning Silver and Uprooted,...10 stars each.
(Again I understand it would be very hard as a content creator to make things fresh and appealing for people like me who have watched you for a while and I appreciate the effort you put into your videos!)
lol, how many times she said, "In this story we follow a young woman."
Isn't cerulean sea an expolitation of canafias 60’s scoop... Errrrrr
I love your videos!!!
Also, it's pronounced as Ka-yee-kay-yee 🤭
An Indian subscriber of mine said it’s pronounced differently (not saying you’re incorrect, just that I’ve had other subscribers tell me different pronunciations)
@@ebnovels makes sense, it's pronounced differently in different parts of India I guess.. where I'm from (South India) it's pronounced this way ✌🏼
this is like the second video of yours that i watch, i think, so i checked all your entries and looks like you focus on fantasy, but in this list you kingfisher that i know she writes more horror stuff and also that book from gaiman that is kind of horror, i dont get the horror on most of gaiman horror writting tho, so short story long, can you please do more horror, im sick of people doing list of horror books and the entire list is s. king books, wich horror i also dont get to understand.
p.s: pls excuse my awful english.
Thank you.
Elliot how old are you?😁
I'm interested in reading "the Wolf and the Woodsman"- I'm half Hungarian and as I read the sample, I noticed the author used a lot of real Hungarian words...it makes me curious and hesitant at the same time.
Maybe seeing the way the different groups “clash” so to speak would be something you could have more insight on 🤔

I just finished Warbreak.
It was very....meh.
It just seemed to languish. Not a bad book....but not exactly good either.
Sorry you didn’t like it!
Huh. Basically all female main characters?
Funny fantasy? No thanks
