      Yet, for violating the laws of the Federation, commissioning an assassination and engaging in a criminal enterprise BTWT places him in the "Best" column, but condemns Captain Maxwell to the Naughty list for engaging in far less nefarious behavior for an equally noble reason. Just nonsense. Both Maxwell and Sisko were heroes of the Federation.

      @@bestoftrekworstoftrek Certainly, Captain Janeway is more deserving of being on the "Best" list that Rachel Garrett.
      Captain Garrett featured in a single episode and died before the sacrificial battle for which she would be wrongfully credited. The fact that you mention the upcoming Section 32 inclusion of Garrett speaks to a recency bias. Then there is the ridiculously small sample size you use to justify her inclusion.
      It's utterly foolish for you to exclude Captain Janeway because she made hard leadership decisions over the course of_six_ _years_ and _172_ _episodes_ , but you place Garrett on a pedestal for the _one_ episode she was scripted in (prior to the upcoming Section 31).
      Finally, your number 1 "Best" Captain, Jean Luc Picard, made equally controversial decisions as did Janeway (and Sisko) during the course of his multiple televised series runs, undermining your own "Best" and "Worst" arguments. You must hold all your Captains to the same standard(s) if you want to pretend there was any objectivity to your selections.
      Your disdain for Captain Janeway (and Sisko) is puzzling and clearly personal. Honestly, your inclusion of Garrett appears to be pure tokenism to avoid criticism for not having a more inclusive list, let alone a more objective selection and ranking.
      As an opinion, you are entitled to have your favorites, but when you pretend there was more substance to your lists than _your_ opinion you deserve, at best a 😏 and at worst a 💩

    • @bestoftrekworstoftrek
      @bestoftrekworstoftrek  7 місяців тому

      There is more substance. This is my opinion, my not "my" opinion. If you asked me who MY favorite captain is, I'd say it's a tie between Picard and Sisko, and Janeway would probably make my top 5. Instead, in this instance, I'm looking at it from the point of view of a Starfleet HR Review. You keep throwing recency bias around without understanding how videos are produced. If you think I threw this together in the few days the info about Rachel Garret in Section 31 was out...you underestimate the time it takes to put a video like this together. She's there, because without her, The Sisko doesn't get to play Space Jesus. There's nothing "personal", but you seem to take this list personally enough that you're all over the comments section as if you've taken a fun list meant simply to start a discussion, personally. It's great to argue who's better and not in certain circumstances, but there's no reason to be so demeaning. Have a nice day!

    Honorable Mention: Captain Data of the USS Sutherland. In his very brief, intentionally temporary command, he not only single-handedly thwarted the Romulan attempt to influence the Klingon Civil War, but he held up the highest standards of the Federation by intentionally refraining from vaporizing the three cloaked (read "unshielded") warbirds, giving them a chance to turn around.

    Agree with you on Ron Tracey because of his actions but he did have Kirk's number and routinely out witted him up until the last fight scene. He also established just how powerful a phaser would be in a primitive society. When he returned after the Yang ambush, he talked about killing hundreds if not thousands with a single hand weapon. If not for the shear numbers and really suicidal charge they did, he would have taken them all out. I also found that an impressive scene.

    • @deadmeat8754
      @deadmeat8754 7 місяців тому

      The irony of Captain Tracey is that he represented the Marxist Starfleet, but was condemned for siding with the Kohms (Communists) against the Yangs (Yankees). The fact that the Yangs worshiped a document which was identical to the USA Constitution indicates the planet had previously been contaminated with contact from earth, or was a lost human colony which invalidated any Prime Directive charges against Tracy. Defending himself and the group giving him shelter from violent attackers could be justified as self-defense. It is very likely Captain Tracey's trauma had resulted in a mental and emotional breakdown leading to his disturbing actions. He certainly seemed to be mentally ill in both versions of the episode.

    I'd have to say Sisko deserves a bit better. I mean, his war crime was more a bluff he went through on which ended with no casualties. The individuals on the planet were not exactly innocent as they obviously aided the Maquis, who for all moral debates were terrorists. Was it a harsh and controversial decision? Definitely, but Sisko was more at fault for forcing an evacuation, one the inhabitants had resources to achieve easily, not genocide.

    If Benteen had opened communications with the Defiant, how was she supposed to know that she wasn't talking to changelings?
    As for Sisko, he didn't destroy that planet's biosphere, much less commit genocide. He did render the planet uninhabitable for humans, but perfectly fine for everything else; the episode is explicit that Cardassian settlers will move there. And by that point, Eddington had actually harmed Federation personnel, so it wasn't a "white whale" thing: SIsko may have been emotionally invested, but stopping Eddington was absolutely his business.

    • @bestoftrekworstoftrek
      @bestoftrekworstoftrek  7 місяців тому

      There's a few problems there. Eddington didn't go out of his way to attack the Federation, just sidelined them from capturing him or taking down The Maquis. There was always the option of leaving him along. Like I said in the video "attempted" genocide. Just because no one was killed, the actions he took were enough to cast him in the role of the villain. And just because Cardassians can survive through it(somehow) doesn't mean it won't destroy or irrevocably change the existing plants and animals on the planet. It's very much a white whale thing, and every captain has one.

    Captain Ben Maxwell on your "Worst" list? The man was a hero to the Federation, but politics painted him a pirate. Captain Maxwell never should have been on this list, but your _opinion_ clearly differs from mine. You win a _Big_ Thumbs Down on this one.
    However, to answer your question (with a minimum of six canon non-Theatrical appearances corresponding to a contemporary streaming "season")...
    Best 5 (Best Appearances in parenthesis)

    "It's not surprising they had to bend the rules a little. They were a little slower to invoke the Prime Directive, and a little quicker to pull their phasers. Of course, the whole bunch of them would be booted out of Starfleet today. But I have to admit, I would have loved to ride shotgun at least once with a group of officers like that." - Captain Janeway on earlier Starfleet Captains.
    As for a "Worst" list, _how_ is "worst" defined? Is it incompetency, malice, corruption, or just "a single irredeemable mistake in a distinguished career"? Obviously, Star Trek hasn't built the franchise around bad Starfleet Captains. In fact, most examples of Starfleet Captains who exhibited incompetence, malice, or made an irredeemable mistake only appeared in a single episode on a single series, or movie. To that end, my "Worst" list will include Captains with as few as a single appearance across all televised and film productions as of 2023. I will also list why they are on my "Worst" list.
    Worst 5 (Appearances & Reasoning)
    1, Garth of Izar (TOS, Malice, actual genocide and insanity with violent tendencies)
    2, Rudy Ransom (VOY, 'Incompetence, malice, conspiracy and the unsanctioned murder of sentient beings/prime directive violations)
    3, Ronald Tracey (TOS, Irredeemable mistake resulting in the death of his crew, malice, corruption unsanctioned warfare/prime directive violation)
    4, Keogh (DS9, Incompetence leading to an irredeemable mistake which resulted in the destruction of his ship and death of his crew)
    5, Carol Freeman (LD, Incompetence and nepotism...if she didn't have an abundance of dumb luck and talented junior officers her ship would have already been destroyed)

      Pike is Recency Bias, because until Anson Mount assumed the role with a brand new show Captain Pike would have only ever been on a Jeffrey Hunter fanboy list. Honestly, I don't think it's legitimate to rank a Captain when their series is still active.
