    So what did you think? What gear set up do you have for long-distance hiking?

    • @planning.purple
      @planning.purple 4 роки тому +1

      My favorite pieces of gear are my pack (Osprey Ariel Pro 65), our pot (Sea to Summit 1L Alpha Pot), our water filter (Katadyn BeFree) and my hiking poles (Black Diamond Distance Carbon FLZ). Also our Sea to Summit head bug nets are life savers this time of year 🦟 🙅🏻‍♀️.

      Hey, buddy thanks for watching! Yeah, your right, I (Kev) need to pull my finger out and do my kit video soon. Hopefully, it all falls into place allowing us to attempt the PCT in 2021. Check out our website Get-two-it.com, which has my lighter pack link on it. 😁

    Thanks for the video! I attempted the WHW (solo) in late September - however never thought much of my backpack weight, which was just under 30KGs! I hurt my knee pretty bad (ironically in the same underpass that Kevin went under in your video), and had to turn back. Plan is to try again in the Spring, but this time with a much lighter set-up - so this video is perfect for showing me where I went wrong! All the best to you both from Andy in Glasgow (p.s, hearing your pronunciations of some of the Scottish names is hilarious!)

      @GETtwoIT  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Andy. Thank you for watching! Sorry about your injury on the WHW. There's nothing worse than an injury taking you off the trail. Your backpack weight is ever-evolving. We are still finding things to remove or add and always trying to find that perfect comfort/weight ratio. Yeah, will never get these Scottish names pronounced right lol.

    A nice and informative video, thank you! We were planning a trip to Scotland to do the West Highland Way in the fall. As you say, there are bigger problems in the world right now than having to reschedule a trip. 🤷🏻‍♀️ We are fortunate enough to be able to head out for day hikes and short backpacking trips close to home, so we have much to be thankful for! Hopefully we will be able to hit the WHW next spring or fall. Speaking of, when would you recommend, April-May-September-October? Keeping in mind we don’t mind the cold at all, but we do mind the crowds and the bugs, and we wouldn’t mind having the least possible chance of rain, knowing that we will get rained on no matter how little the chances are! 😂 Our pack totals are 27 pounds for me, 28 pounds for my partner and 2 pounds for our dog (including all consumables for two people and a dog for about three days). We do carry a bear canister for safety purposes, it’s mandatory in a lot of areas we hike in, which makes lowering our pack weight a bit trickier. Our base weights don’t mean much either, as my partner carries the bear can with all the food, so I carry all the basics (tent, cook kit, first aid, etc.). However, I don’t think we’ll need a bear can for the WHW, and (sadly) we won’t be with our pup, so we’ll be able to shed at least 4 pounds each! I’m looking forward to more videos from you guys. Sending warm hugs from Canada! 🇨🇦

    • @GETtwoIT
      @GETtwoIT  4 роки тому

      So sorry for the late reply. Firstly thank you for watching! So best times to hit the (In our opinion) WHW would be Spring and Autumn (May and Sept) due mainly to a generally low midge count (pick up Skin so soft to counter them). Its Scotland so you will most definitely experience wet weather, so bring good rain gear. Crowd wise, we did the WHW in Sept and it wasn't bad at all, we spent a lot of time by ourselves. You definitely dont need a bear can, nothing carrying you away like that here. You won't need to carry a week's worth of food either unless you are hardcore wild campers. The beauty of the WHW there plenty of pubs to wet your whilste and fill you up. I hope you manage to experience the beauty of Scotland and the WHW soon. Love Katie and Kev x

    Great video, and a good setup! One small point: the Leatherman Skeletool kbx has a locking blade, which makes it illegal to carry in the UK. I would recommend getting a different knife - you would not want to be caught carrying that in built up areas.

    • @GETtwoIT
      @GETtwoIT  4 роки тому

      Kev: Good point! Just looked into the legality of the knife and it is a messy grey area on use. I didn't give much thought to the locking mechanism due to the blade being less than 3ins and being foldable. We will look to get a foldable non locking knife to be on the safe side 👍

    Hi Guys. My partner and I have just come across your channel recently. Great to see your exploits,warts and all . We're interested in some ldw next year so we'll watch more and hopefully pick up some tips. We liked the kit video especially . Any particular reason you don't use hiking boots..?
    Stay safe .

    • @GETtwoIT
      @GETtwoIT  3 роки тому +1

      Hey, first of all thanks for watching! Appreciate the feedback on the kit video, and happy that you found it useful. We should have our South Downs way video uploaded before new year's, so keep an eye out for that.
      We don't use boots for long distance hiking for several reasons. Trail trainers are lighter and more comfortable for walking 15+ miles everyday, not tiring you legs and feet out so quickly.
      Rigid, hard-soled boots generally don't flex with your feet and they wont let your feet breathe. Your feet will be soft from soaking in sweaty boots all day and that makes them vulnerable to blisters.
      If trainers get wet, they dry out extremely quickly.
      My advice is to go with what suits you best. Boots still have a their place, for us trainers work best for long distance hiking.
      Hope that helps.

    Hi, I love your channel. Inspired, me and my husband went for our daily exercise yesterday with a 5kg dumbell in our backpacks. We went for a 5 mile walk in the feilds near our house ( we are lucky to be able to do this ). By the end of the walk my shoulders were sore at the top where the backpack straps sit. Can you give me any ideas with this, do you just get used to the weight? We have done lots of day walks over the years, but would love to do the camping thing rather than a shepa van and b+b which is expensive. Thanks again for sharing your travels xx

    • @GETtwoIT
      @GETtwoIT  4 роки тому +2

      Glad to hear you can get out and about! By no means an expert with backpacks but I have found getting the right size is key and making sure the hip belt and chest belt are well fitted also. I tend to go for a female specific backpack as they are designed for the female form. It is a bit of a shock to the system carrying weight and something your body gets used to. Its nice to have a night of luxury but we enjoy the camping, adds to the adventure! And yes much cheaper! Stay safe x

    Hi Katie, your sleeping bag looks good for colder nights, we are doing the Cotswold way this summer, it’ll be our first self sufficient hike! We don’t know what temperature rating sleeping bag to get, would you recommend anything? I was looking at a 5deg one but wondering if that will be too cold? Any thoughts would be much appreciated, thank you 😊

    • @GETtwoIT
      @GETtwoIT  Рік тому

      Hello, our sleeping bags have a comfort limit of -6°C, 3 seasons, lightweight and packs small(ish). I like being warm at night (and do tend to feel the cold) so I would personally take my sleeping bag during the summer months but some may find it too warm. I also tend to use a sleep liner (sea to summit, thermolite reactor) which helps to add extra warmth if needed. What you could look at is the 5°C option with a liner then you have the option to add the layer. Also depends on you and what temperature you feel comfortable at. 😁

    Hi Katie did you ever try Zinc Oxide Tape for your feet. In the military we used it all the time on long Tabs (Tactical Advance to Battle) comes in all different widths and is great for taping up the parts of your feet your having the problems with, highly reccomend it. I used to keep it on for a few days at a time as it's an absolute nightmare to get off, especially us men with hairy ankles lol. Try it next time on one of your walks with a good pair of socks over the top, the tape helps to keep the friction of the skin of the foot. Mick. Northern Ireland 👍🍻

    • @GETtwoIT
      @GETtwoIT  4 роки тому +1

      Sorry, Micheal for not getting back to you sooner. Thanks for the suggestion. I've (Katie) tried the Zinc Oxide tape in the past but can have a reaction to them, which cause even more problems. Its been a long road to finding the perfect pair of footwear, but I think I've now found them in the Topo Ultraventure trail trainers. We've been out for lots of 20+ mile day walks, and my feet have been super cosy. Fingers crossed for our upcoming Great Glenn Way and East Highland way hikes I will have no problems.

    Out of curiosity how much weight does your hubby carry? Couldn't he share some of your bits n pieces like the cook system, toiletries & the tent poles? You're obviously capable of carrying them but they won't make that much difference to abig guy but would make it a bit easier for you x

    • @GETtwoIT
      @GETtwoIT  3 роки тому +1

      To be fair my husband does carry his fair share and his bag tends to be slightly heavier than mine. We share the tent between the two of us, i tend to carry the poles and ground sheet and kev has the inner and outer tent plus pegs. We each carry some toiletries, food, and cooking pieces, he carries majority of the electrical equipment. We also tend to use my water first which lightens the load.
