Easy to be-Islam: Chinese Soup (Bak-kut-teh) shows mistrust between Malaysians and Muslims?

  • When the National Heritage Department confirmed that the Chinese Soup called Bak-kut-teh as a heritage food of Malaysia, some Malay politicians and professors opposed the move under the reason that it is unislamic and that the Chinese soup is not 'old enough' to be known as 'heritage'. In this video I take this issue to task using simple Islamic values and the idea of a shared history of the Malay world in the many multi-faith Kingdoms of the past in Peninsular Malaysia.

Well said. Prof who knows his heart, his religion, his God. When you know your true God and understand the teachings, you will carry it with you and not feel threatened just because of a dish, a word, a song, concerts etc etc. We cannot be living under a tempurung and not understand and accept the diversities of this world. In Malaysia, we all know it's full of sensitivities. Sometimes it is sad to see the contradictions.

Hello Prof Tajuddin, again the Muslim in this country is not truly Islamic when they (Muslim) prohibit the heritage food of Bak Kut Teh from being recognised as heritage in Malaysia. As Islam is a beautiful religion, it allows the non Muslim to practise freedom to eat their heritage food. So, I don't see the Bak Kut Teh being recognised as Heritage food pose any problem because the Bak Kut Teh dish is just a name " Meat Bone Soup". The meat can be pork, lamb, beef, fish, seafood, chicken & the soup is made from herbs. So, the Muslims need not be sensitive to prohibit the Bah Kut Teh being recognised as Heritage Food.

I am really impressed with Prof Tajuddin narratives of Malaysia’s issues on his videos.
Prof Tajuddin’s explanations and at times, sounded more like a mediator, is a good start to foster understanding.
For the sake of the nation, the root cause for this envy, jealousy, resentment, ignorant, and hatred need to be addressed.
We are debating about bak-kut-teh as a heritage dish where else other parts of the world is debating about AI (Artificial Intelligence) developments and its impacts.
I am very happy and grateful to Prof Tajuddin as he works on bringing the people of Malaysia together instead of tearing them apart.
This is very important for nation-building, and the ultimate goal is to be one of the greatest nations on earth.
I wish him all the best as he is a peacemaker for Malaysians.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, because they will be called the sons of God”.

THQ Prof..for extending your point of view or open-mindedness on this Bak Kut Teh (bkt) issue.. the problem with the negative comments from the Muslim sector of this country is that they are so ignorant that bkt can only be pork- base..but that is not so as other meat such as beef or chicken can be used...Malaysia needs people like you to understand that Malaysia is a multi- cultural country and respect dishes of other races which forms part and parcel of this beautiful country...

Exactly. I have a Chinese friend who doesn't eat pork. When she eats bakuteh, it is always chicken. There is no issue at all. Why make a mountain out of mole hill? 🤯😊 The company I am working with produces Bakuteh and it is certified halal. Because the ingredients are just herbs and spices, no meat involved. Malaysia is a beautiful country to live in 🎉❤😊

Bak kut teh means boney meat in herbal soup. 1. 'Bak kut' means boney meat (any meat) 2. 'Teh' here means herbal soup. There are many Chinese who eat chicken bak kut teh, beef bak kut teh or vegetarian bak kut teh. It must not necessarily be pork. It depends on one's choice of meat. There is unity in diversity. Today, there are many muslim restaurants selling chicken or beef paus, and chicken and beef dim sum. There is no problem about it. We know that paus and dim sum are originally Chinese dishes. Everyone is ok about it. So why now?
In the same token, many muslim shops are selling roti canai which is an Indian dish. Mind you, today the muslims are selling roti canai much tastier than the Indians themselves. I love the muslims paus too. In my opinion, they make better paus than the Chinese themselves in terms of taste and texture. It also goes the same with cakoi.
The Chinese had been here long before the British brought them. When Hang Li Poh married the Sultan of Malacca, she brought many Chinese along to this country. They were her maids, warriors, royal courtesans and dignitaries, and simple citizens too. LET US LIVE PEACEFULLY AND IN UNITY. LOVE ONE ANOTHER. LOVE OUR DIVERSITY. Camtu kan bagus.

Saya bukan hokkien tapi kantonis. Pada mulanya saya juga ingat bak tu daging babi oleh kerana dahulukala orang gunakan daging babi pada mula mula itu jadi sekarang kita anggap itu makanan tak halal dan bak tu babi. Sepertimana lampin bayi guna buang pampers. Rasanya ia jenama yg pertama, jadi walaupun kita pakai jenama lain kita panggilnya pampers juga. Sama juga mi maggi. Kita pergi kedai mamak, kita order maggi goreng. Walhal ape yg mamak goreng tu bukan maggi tapi mi lain. Kita panggil maggi sebab ia mi segera yg lama ade di negara kita. Kesimpulan, halal ke tak halal tergantung pada ramuan yg kita pakai.

Bak Kut Teh was one of my all-time favorite dishes, and to my delight I have had mutton-based Bak Kut Teh in a halal restaurant in Ipoh. Shame on me for forgetting the name of the restaurant.
My wife makes Bak Kut Teh for me on a semi regular basis, just last week we had tofu and lettuce based BKT for sahur throughout the week. Easy to heat up at 5am :)
    And slightly off topic
For those like me who miss the dish, I would suggest using lamb/mutton if you like fatty cuts of meat and using turkey if you like lean cuts.

If bak so mee can become a Malay version. Bak kut teh should not be a recipe exclusively using pork as an ingredient. The meaning of Bak kut Teh when translate is Meat Bone Tea. Nothing to do with pigs. Even if originally , they use pork. Food like Kway chap also instead of pork , they use other ingredients. There are many enterprising Malay Muslims who convert Chinese recipes to recipes for Muslims.

Prof. Bakuteh berasal Dari pelabuhan Klang. Kenapa Pelabuhan?. Orang Hokkien kerja angkut barang barang berat pelabuhan guna badan sendiri. Gaji sikit. Kerja panas hujan. Tiada mesin angkut barang. Semua pakai tenaga badan. Bandan Tua sakit badan Dan kaki. Bagaimana Bakuteh dijumpai ? Tetapi. Herba memang dari Singapore.. tapi Cara resepi campuran bukan dari Singapore. Resipi ITU di atas herba herba Yang terjatuh atas lantai perlabuhan Klang. Perkerja pelabuhan tiada duit Beli herba. Jadi kutip saki Baki herba Dan Campur sendiri. Sebenar ialah sup Tulang herba.

.ketidakpastian babi, ayam , kambing/ sembelih tak? Lagipon kita cuma tak setuju diangkat sbg makanan wariasan. Bnyk lg makanan lain spt nasi lemak , roti canai, rendang pon kita tak angkat jadikan makanan warisan cuma iktiraf sbg makanan Malaysia...

Actually most of the Muslims don't care about this, it is just like what Prof said, politician uses this as a topic. There's Halal bao as well. there's no need to make them think or anything, most of them don't care, they only know that food is food, as long as they are made halal, the name of the food doesn't matter.
