Can I successfully locate THREE fan pics in one vid? [GEO DETECTIVE #22]

- Опубліковано 15 січ 2024
- Geo Detective is back and we begin the year with a trio of fan photos; two warm ups, and a tougher one to finish off with. There wasn't a whole lot to go off in this waterside snap besides a blue boat. Will that boat hold the key? or will I be plunged once again into an endless map search?
For those new to the channel, Geo Detective is a series in which I (GeoWizard) attempt to pinpoint the exact location of a photo, be it a fan or something different, using my skills on google earth, google maps and my questionable googling skills. So far I've only failed once, but there's time yet...
Don't forget to subscribe: / @geowizard and please give the video a quick like if you enjoyed it! Cheers :)
Keep them likes coming folks I really appreciate it.
Hope you all have a cracking year too by the way. Set yourself a goal and get it done 💪
So we're still able to submit selfies of us in obscure places for you to pinpont?
EDIT: You said "keep them *likes* coming" - I thought you just wrote "keep them coming," as in, keep the selfies coming.
Cheers.
How do you send in photos ?
@GeoWizard . Win or loose. I have a picture of me that I think would be hard to find the location. If you find the location I will donate £100 for you to give to your favourite charity and if you can’t I will still donate £10 to your charity
Keep the GeoDetective coming lad 💥
GeoWizard's first reaction when he sees a building that *he* doesn't think should be there:
"Has that been demolished!?"
Classic Tom;
“It’s not Venice, it’s too landy”
I mean, true lol
Yes, it's back! Just a note though, I don't think anyone is flipping their images, that's just what the front camera on phones does on standard settings
Ah yes, it's coming back to me now 🤦♂👴
@@GeoWizardGrandpappy Tom finding out about modern day technology!
Jokes aside, you're a legend, Tom! Thanks for all your effort:)
I remember by default on iPhone it used to show you the mirrored version when you were taking the photo and flip it to be unmirrored once you actually took it.
At some point over the last 10 years they changed that as the kids got used to Snapchat and instagram and tiktok which didn’t do that.
@@muhilan8540 always with the 'kids these days' 🤣 they don't flip because it's supposed to show you how you look in a mirror, because mirrors flip things. Flipped images are how people most often see themselves because of mirrors. Simmer down grandpa
@@scladoffle2472It’s not a kids these days, I’m only 22 myself, I just found it interesting how it changed. And fyi the iPhone always showed it mirrored before you pressed the button, it only flipped it back the right way round after you actually took the pic
can't get enough of these classic geo detectives
for real
Brilliant search for the boat. I thought that was totally pointless looking for it and that there was ZERO chance he was in Chicago. That's why you are the best! Very fun watch
See, as soon as he found the Chicago tour boat, I was immediately 'Oh my god, that's Navy Pier in the background'
@@stetre83 My immediate reaction was "that looks like Navy Pier", then I thought it couldn't be Chicago. Because of the tall buildings. But I guess I have to trust my gut.
The little red placard is very “Navy” and the guy has a Navy haircut. Also the equipment on the pier right next to him looks exactly like pier services we had in Hawaii. I knew this was near a Navy installation, but I didn’t consider Chicago at all.
@@davidgrimmer7264 the Navy Pier hasn't been a military installation for a long time. It's just a tourist and entertainment center now.
@@davidgrimmer7264 Good instincts, but this place is totally non-navy related now. I'd guess the haircut is just a coincidence. Nearest Navy installation is Great Lakes Naval Base, which is closer to Wisconsin.
I reckon that one on the bus in Torquay was taken immediately as he read that Tom was originally asking for submissions. He just opened his camera app, took a snap, sent it in.
The GeoWizard's quest to document every persons location on Google Earth continues.
Just 8.085 billion or so to go...
@@jlt131 plenty of content to come :)
Glad to hear this is going to be more common now! It's a great concept I love to watch. My favourites are when you are doing a "service" rather than a simple "challenge" (like finding the meaningful location of a grandparent's childhood snap or some-such). Still continue to really enjoy your other Geovids as well, of course.
I'm in agreement but also torn - I like the satisfaction of knowing for sure he was right on the tricky ones, but the historical ones have so much interest as well, and pose an extra challenge when so many buildings and landscapes have changed!
I'm in an office building right now 5 blocks away from where Tim Ponsomby was standing and Chicago never crossed my mind. I've even been to Navy Peir loads of times. Tricky one. You are teh GOAT sir.
For real! I live in Chicago and it didn't even register this was a possibility at first. Maybe because I'm literally surrounded by snow right now so seeing anything green is throwing me off. Overall, this is a perfect photo for GeoWizard. It's a very famous location, but taken from such a different angle that it doesn't register what the location is. His head blocking the ferris wheel definitely took away a big clue too
Hey Tom! I don't know if you will see this, but I think a fun addition for these geodetective videos would be that in the beginning you try to guess the location like a NMPZ geoguessr round. In the end it would be interesting to see how far your initial guess was.
Bologna had roughly 100 towers in the 12th and 13th centuries. Nobody's sure exactly how many, or why they were there. They often had fortified gates, so they may have been places for rich people to hide while the fighting happened down at ground level. There are more than those two left, and some fortified gates.
They were indeed for the rich. Its was basically a show-off by the wealthy and powerful families of the City. They also served as a defense against the others
It was a prestige thing. All the major noble families in the city had one, and yes, they compared sizes
I remember seeing something similar in Assassin's Creed 2. Looked it up again, it's a town called San Gimignano. Not as crazy as it's on a much smaller scale but the "towers per capita" seems about the same, and many of them are still standing.
A nice video from Shadiversity explains this. Search for "The forgotten medieval CITY OF CASTLES"
Luckily San Gimignano still have them ❤️🇮🇹
@geowizard I live in Florida, moved here from Chicago 6 years ago. I was convinced Tom was standing in front of the ICW. I’ve been to navy pier many times and never thought that was the back drop. I think the lack of the Ferris wheel is what got me. Well done!!
I’m still baffled, been there plenty of times but I’ve never seen the pier from quite that angle without the Ferris wheel
@@user-xk1zt2ds4b i am fairly certain his head is covering up the wheel based on the angle
I thought it was the pier right away. And with the fuzzy "NAVY" light there, it was a dead giveaway.
i’ve been to chicago countless time and couldn’t believe it was navy pier lol
In Tims photo I think you can actually see the reflection of the building in the water. That google earth image did make it look like it was about to be demolished though.
I came here to say this! But to be fair I only did notice after the tall building was revealed.
@@oagersnap Same I wish I had thought to look at the water sooner.
It would be very funny if one of these times on Google Earth you find the location, and the street view shows the actual person in question you're trying to guess getting their picture taken.
Many Italian cities were littered with towers Tom.
During turbulent times they were defensive buildings for the wealthy.
They were also mostly a dick measuring contest
What's wild is how they're littered all around the center of the city like skyscrapers. Usually when you see these types of towers they're located on an outer defensive wall. I also thought this was a wild fantasy of the artist when I first saw that pic. Interesting!
I believe@@samandmax42, this may have been due to not having a single powerful mayor/lord/whatever, perhaps like the Medicis, rich enough to fortify a city.
More probable though, these ancient places were just too ramshackle. As such, it was more cost effective for each international trader to simply protect their own families and wealth. Plus, who doesn't love a big phallic status symbol?
san gimignano is a good example of this, although on a smaller scale.
Incredible as always, Tom. The funny thing is I’m currently in Chicago traveling solo and I’m scheduled to take an architectural river tour two days from now! I’m actually staying only a 20 minute walk from where that pic was taken. Even funnier is that I was traveling solo in Italy a few years ago and took almost that exact same picture in Verona. I guess my next logical solo adventure will be Torquay.
Oh, that’s brilliant!
So excited for more of this series!
I'm a Chicagoan, and when you first zoomed in on the photo, my first thought was "Well that looks like the entrance to Navy Pier." But I wrote it off because no ferris wheel! But the more you looked, I kept coming back to that. So I paused the video and had a great time finding the exact spot where the photo was taken!
I nearly cried when you decided it couldn't be Chicago and clicked away from it. Glad you got there in the end! Well done! :D
You nearly cried?
@sowianskizonierz2693 its an emotional game this geowizadry
The last round was phenomenal.
The key clue being something that's one of a kind. And it happens to pass through at the just the right moment the photo was taken.
The Verona map and finding the exact tree was nuts.
Bologna had plenty of high towers during the Middle Ages. At that time rich people used to buld those towers to demonstrate the wealth of their family. Today you can also find high tower in a city in the province of Siena(Tuscany) called San Gimignano. Very nice place in my opinion
Its always a better day when I see a Geowizard upload
I live in Chicago and I couldn't even recognize that as navy pier at first lol. What gave it away was the sea wall and Tim's shirt which one of my friends owns so knew there was a chance he bought it in Chicago.
Knew it was Navy Pier right away. I kept talking to the screen saying, "go to the right, go to the right. you're almost there, awww" Then you came back and nailed it. Great job.
I was just binge watching all of the older Geo Detective videos at about 5 o’clock this morning because I couldn’t sleep - talk about timing!
I'm so glad these are back since they are what drew me to the channel in the first place! I've started asking my friends for travel photos of theirs and it's been so much fun working on them and comparing my search techniques to yours. The sense of accomplishment when you finally zero in on a promising looking area after hours of searching is amazing. As good as any video game I've ever played. Keep 'em coming! I have enjoyed the mission videos as well and big props for producing your own music which is stellar!
For the last one after you found the boat I Googled "shoreline sightseeing" from the side as it clearly reads the same on the photo. That showed me that it wasn't a nationwide company with boats in different locations, instead taking me straight to Navy Pier, Chicago.
And even if it was, you can easily find the boat routes on their website! Goes for sightseeing buses too😁
I am laughing so hard at your disbelief about the medieval Manhattan that was Bologna (although that is very reasonable).
Those are indeed true palm trees Tom, dont know what you mean saying they are not real palm trees 😂
I know they’re real plants, what I meant was they might be a relative of the palm tree 🌴
diseased dwarf palm trees
@@GeoWizardyes they are in the same family as coconuts and other palms for sure, so they are true palms
@@GeoWizardThey are Chinese windmill palms, very cold hardy but true palms nonetheless
They are Trachycarpus Fortunei and real palm trees😂
I've literally been on that tour in Chicago, on that very boat, and I didn't recognize it 🤣 Great detective work.
Great detective work as usual Tom, love to year that we will get more GeoDetectives this year, definitely look forward to them!
I always learn something random and fun in these videos. I believe the reason those Florida and Chicago waterways look so similar is that they're a part of the Great Loop a 4000 mile stretch of waterways from Chicago to Florida. Would make an excellent adventure that I've only just recently learned about.
Recognised verona as soon as it popped up, been there once and stood in that exact spot! Makes a change as I've never known anywhere else on the detective vids! Great job!
Vamossss geo-detective is back and I'm all here for it! My favourite series of yours!
Tom still not understanding the selfie camera and how the image will be reversed, lol! Loved the video.
To be fair, most phones flip the image back to the correct orientation. Or have an option for it. Keeping the image flipped is barbaric
Hello Tom, I love this traditional style of geo detective and I have a question - what happened to "Hugo Dudesworthy" and "Josh Jerry Janulus" from GEO DETECTIVE #11 episode? I know you mentioned that you expect them to be difficult, but I was hoping you would get back to them eventually. I tried finding them myself, so I am excited to see how you will approach these pictures, but you keep skipping them.
I guess that one guy in the valley was just to hard to ever beeing found
@@christianh2581 With the honest (and fun) way Tom is using, maybe you are right. When I was trying to find them, I cheated and used the reverse image search and to my surprise, the location came right up. It is crazy how powerfull tool that is. Also, who says that every location has to be exact? I think that educated guess after one or two hours of searching is perfectly valid option. (Hopefully that guy who sent the picture is still watching after 2 years to reveal the exact location if neccessary :D)
Still the best series on youtube. This was some stellar detective work. I wouldn't have even known where to start on the last one.
When you found that Chicago boat I just hit myself on the head. I have been ON THAT BOAT ON THAT ARCHITECTURE TOUR MYSELF and I didn't recognize it. What a brainfart. But I'll excuse myself by having huge jetlag at that time.
I was so frustrated when you initially wrote off Chicago because you hadn't yet looked at the pier, but I knew you'd go back!
Yep, that is actually how Bologna looked like in the XV century. Actually most of the cities in italy looked like that back in the days, cause richest family of the city were fighting to get the tallest tower in the city. The taller the tower the more money you had
Semi random fact, that amusement park was featured prominently in the move Divergent (which is set in Chicago). They were actually climbing on that ferris wheel, and the towers on the far right of the photo were the towers they played capture the flag in (I believe). I've actually been to Chicago once, but saw so little (mostly just the train station as I was passing through, plus a grocery store nearby), that I probably know more about Chicago from Divergent than being there.
I love almost everything you do, but Geo Detective is my absolute, all-time favourite. I'd stay subscribed even if you ONLY did these. It's something I do myself sometimes when I see a photo and want to know where it was taken, or sometimes even a shot from a movie.
Absolutely love this series, keep it up
lets go!! love geodetective so much! very glad you're going to be listening to the popularity and focusing on this a bit more this year, love that!
More of this please!
And the missions, of course.
Always love seeing the geodetective episodes, Tom! Thanks!
I think these are my favourite videos of yours, love a good detective work!
I love this series mate. Have been waiting for ages for it to return, glad to hear we're going to see more 👍🏻
Finally! This is what I love to watch. 30 minutes might be too short however! 😅
Love these geo detective videos. Great work!
Absolutely SMASHED your way though these. Get in!
Love this series. Excited for more.
For me, this is your most enjoyable content, so I'm really glad that it's back.
my favorite series. glad to see it back!
Geodetective quietly became my favourite series, happy to see it back
I've been in Chicago and walked literally on that pier and sat on that boat (!!), and I shouted for minutes to my TV that he definitely was not Chicago 😂.
Great to see these back. This is how I found your channel originally!
Every episode of this series is so epic
Yes! The best series is back. Great to hear that there's more to come this year too!
Really enjoyed watching. More please. And more collabs with Storror. Keep up the great work. 👍
Just amazing detective work once again. Well done.
I love these videos. Glad to see them back!
could watch the geodetective series all day i love it
GeoDetective. Best series on UA-cam. Thank you.
Regarding Bologna's towers, wikipedia says there were between 80 and 100, that's crazy!
Favorite series! Best ones are the human interest ones like trying to find where a relative is.
good call. this is a great series. human connection is powerful in marketing. so many ideas you can play on with your audience this series. excited to see what comes.
Love this content lad. Can't even begin to understand the intelligence you display in these vids, keep it up lad.
Two places I've been (Verona and Chicago) and I still didn't recognize the harbor mouth!
And yeah, medieval Bologna looked that insane but war and time took out almost all of those towers.
1.) How can we submit phots? and 2.) how challenging can it be? example, can the guess be non-urban? Some distinctive forest or mountain?
Loved the last one, I knew it was Navy Pier in Chicago immediately but enjoyed watching you search for it!
Been watchin for years, but I also enjoy finding locations of videos or pictures. Now if only I could make a living doing it.
Incredible dectective skiils there GeoWizard!
I'm glad you got there in the end, as a lifelong Floridian i knew the trees were wrong, not so much the deciduous ones as we do have some of those, (sycamores and such) but the spruces right beside those. Additionally, I don't think i've ever seen corrugated steel used for seawalls here, I wager it would rust too quickly.
I love the detective work and logic of the search. I would have have searched for hours for the Chicago location!
Chicago’s Navy Pier is one hell of a historical location: The 1893 World’s Fair introduced the first Ferris Wheel to 27 million people 🎡 Also, The Devil in the White City is a must read about this event.
The Chicago one looked like it was almost impossible at the start, but when you went to these lengths in figuring out what type of boat that was and where it was located, it was pretty much a walk in the park. I would never even have though of trying to identify the ferry, because it looked so...common.
Loved the Verona one..... thought Florence also. I've been to both and recognised it.
Hope you and V' are well sir and keeping warm.! Cold up 'ere in Rotherham.
When you found the literal exact boat in the picture, down to its name, and then found literal *tracking information* for said boat... and nearly wrote it off???? I almost lost my mind Tom xD Well done as always though!
Hey Tom! Your incredible score playing the world map 10s NMPZ inspired me to attempt to beat it and I recently managed a score of 24,849! Thank you for giving me the motivation to become better and setting the bar high.
Holy crap, your last guess was insane

@@gtjack9 it’s my most recent upload :)
Congrats and as always fun to follow 👍
Crazy. I thought the building in the background felt familiar. The instant you click on the Chicago River tour boat I said "NAVY PIER!!!" Of course my familiarity with my city and yelling at the screen didn't speed up the process at all.
Keep up the good work. I did notice in the last image (Tim Poncemby) that the water on the left hand side has dark patches, probably reflections, corresponding to the tall building which is just out of shot.
absolutely amazing how you were able to solve that last one based on that boat. You are an expert!
I screamed as soon as I saw a glimpse of the second photo😂😂😂😂 THATS MY HOMEEE THATS VERONA HECK YEAH
I try to race you to the locations once the video starts. Got the first one but you got me on the other two.
The medium-easy difficulty ones are my favourite for this reason
A new normal geo detective?!?! Very nice 🎉 more please 🥺
Just trying to make sure you see that Great Aunt's Painting is Pont Neuf, Paris and was actually extremely accurate!

@@MandyJonas97 Thanks! I've been posting on all the geo-detective vids hoping he will update it. I was kind of playing along with him looking for the spot and found it, and was very proud of myself! Hopefully he checks it out. It is actually a great painting!
youve had the best channel on youtube for the longest time! love all your vids
Tom should work for the pier’s marketing department. “It’s kind of an incredible looking place of fun.”
Hooray!!! Love this series
Worked at navy pier for a few summers, recognized the third pic immediately. first time I’ve ever been ahead of Tom!
I love your classic geo detective videos
Finding location of fans was the video that brought me to your channel. It is much better than the game.
Yay!!! Thank the actual Lord!! And Tom, GeoDetective flipping rocks!! 🎉
I have been to Verona and Chicago so that was special episode of the geo detective for me ❤️
I now play this game with my sisters, they send me random pictures of any location they have been on holiday and I have to find the spot. since I know in general what countries they have not been to, it is a bit easier, but still a good challenge , they have travelled a lot
They could make it harder if they could get their friends and colleagues to contribute….then you’d have nothing to go on.
@@dees3179 that would probably too difficult, we have a nice balance now
I started watching all of you previous Geo detective videos ❤
I love these series so much!!!!
The third one was well done -- both in terms of your searching, and in terms of how "Tim" framed the image! It really doesn't look like Chicago, and yet there's just enough to find it.
The first one would have been more fun if the street post had blocked the name of the building.
