    I love using this stuff I painted my 74. Charger monochromatic but with matte black to accent trim, I used Eastwood's jade green metallic for the main body..... Matte black for bumpers, mirrors. Stainless trim sand blasted And primed with self etching primer, And old school slotted wheels all matte black it really makes the car look mean. I do love chrome but as today's environmental rules make it really expensive to have redone..... And usually it gets done out of the USA..... I.E. Mexico and still costs a pretty penny it's an affordable option to go matte black . I have a 71 charger which is going original B5 blue and the plan is the same. And a 77 440 Cordoba that's going all matte black murdered out to the extreme!

    Great work, looks great! I love how you get professional results with the setup you have. I don't know how you keep over spray off your shop tools ;) If you haven't made one already I would be interested in a deep dive discussion about paint ratio's. For example if a paint is say 4:2:1 (paint reducer, hardener) and you decide to add more reducer say 4:3:1 do you also have to compensate adding more hardener because you added more reducer? Gun setup, needle choice, fan pattern, etc etc. Keep up the good work.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  4 роки тому +11

      You can always add the reducer to your liking - you don't have to add more hardener. i.e. if the paint:hardener ratio is 4:1, it stays 4:1 no matter the amount of reducer. I'll do a video on that exact topic - thanks for asking that question. Have a good week end :)

    Mate i was always taught to start a bonnet spray starting from one side going to the middle then coming back to the middle then going to the other edge. You get no dry edge in the middle of the bonnet...Cheers

      I'm not sure if I'm getting it correct. Would one side get double spray or would you do the first one to the middle sort of light?

      Start at one side, spray to the middle, then go around and start spraying from the middle to the outer edge, that way your leaving your wet edge behind you.. Cheers

      same for me, was going to ask why Jerry started in the middle. Not too bad for matte paint, but for clear 2k will show a dry edge everytime, unless you are using a very slow hardener and reducer. Check this one out, might help ua-cam.com/video/2ko2flnOOqw/v-deo.html

    How are you not transferring oil from your hands onto the surface of the hood? A tack cloth is not going to remove any oils left from your skin. Or are you not concerned about your bare skin touching the surface? A lot of "professional" painters consider that taboo. Just curious.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  4 місяці тому

      A lot of "professional" painters in magazine, internet, and blogs. In a shop though your hands are always bone dry, there is no oils on a body mans hands or a painter. They're using thinners, wax and grease removers, working with fine dust, etc. You are always touching your work (have to) but you keep good shop habits - no eating, using hand lotion, working on mechanical stuff, etc.

      You wont get a dust free job if you just use the panel wipe - I promise. Never any fish eyes from doing it this way and always dust free jobs. The dust you get in your paint job is dust that's already on the panel - not from anywhere else - really.

      @@LakesideAutobody I did have an idea just based on what I've seen in a bunch of videos. I don't have my car yet but my idea was to try to make my paint strong. If I use a truck bed coating as a base, sand it smooth apply my primer, base coat and clear, would that give it some durability? I'd also like to apply a ceramic coating after I buff and polish the clear. What do you think of this? Would it work in your opinion?

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  3 роки тому

      @@StoneyBrownTV Cars rust from the inside out so nothing on the outside can stop rust - period - end of story. That being said, if you want tough paint get a good urethane BC/CC, use a good 2k primer surfacer and a sealer before you paint. That will easily take care of the outside. Now the inside - see both of these vids for what goes on inside: ua-cam.com/video/NXAo5IfMtPM/v-deo.html & ua-cam.com/video/DqxMHCizkUE/v-deo.html You can have it rust proofed professionally too - I think the wax based stuff is really a good way to go because it never hardens and self heals. Let me know what you're thinking :) BTW - you're idea about the truck bed liner is good but a lot of guys are using it on the "outside" over the factory paint - Line-X - It's the toughest stuff out there. I'm not a big fan of doing that though because again, cars rust from the inside out - starts where the bare metal is pinched together at the factory and welded - there's no paint protecting that when salty water gets in there at the bottom of your doors, fenders, hood, deck lid etc.

    • @StoneyBrownTV
      @StoneyBrownTV 3 роки тому

      @@LakesideAutobody okay thank you. I want to use a good bc/cc for sure. I just thought the truck liner would've given hardened surface to paint on but not so must rust protection. I don't encounter snow very often but I do expect to be in it at some point so I'd likely protect under the car with it at this point. Thank you for the input. It helps a lot!

    I have a problem I can use some advice on. I’ve done some bodywork that I am very happy with the outcome, thanks to your tutorials, but parts of the car has had previously been painted. I suspect that it is lacquer about 20 years old and I can’t feather the edges it keeps gumming up. I’ll drop down a couple of grits start again slower speed and bang gum again! How do I get out of this muck! Paint in these area’s is checked and cracked. David

    • @LakesideAutobody

      The only cure for that is a bondo hog with 36-40 grit on it and strip it all off. I've run into that before and it's a real bummer. Here's the tool - www.amazon.com/s?k=Ingersoll+Rand+328B+Heavy+Duty+Air+Geared+Orbital+Sander+-+8-Inch+Pad&i=tools&ref=nb_sb_noss
      There's other ways to strip paint but this is my preferred method if you only have to do a few panels. Hope that helps :)

    I just got my hood paint in satin black but theres some particles on the paint. How should I sand those areas to remove those particles and bring back the same black satine shine without over doing the rest of the hood. Thank you!

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  2 роки тому

      You can't. All you can do is wet sand it and paint it again. All of the dust in a paint job is already on the panel when you begin painting. That's why I feel for the dust as shown in this video - lots of folks laugh at that but it's why this hood turned out dust free. What ever method you choose, you have to make sure there's ZERO dust on the panel when you begin painting. With shiny paint it's a bit different as you can cut and buff - not satin or flat paints - Jerry

  • @eksine
    @eksine 2 роки тому

    I'm learning how to paint too, but it looks like you're not consistent with your spray pattern, you jump around a lot and I didn't see much spraying inside the hood scoop, but than all of a sudden at the end the panel looks perfect even though the first 2 coats were really uneven coverage. and it looks like you're spraying too far back. your paint comes out good so I'm trying to figure out if we were being tricked or if it even matters how basecoat is put on?

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  2 роки тому

      You're not being tricked. If you spray in a booth you can see a lot better therefore put it on wetter without worry - you can see EXACTLY how it's going on - which you need to do. If you are in a garage with poor lighting you change your technique a bit to avoid runs or super wet areas. Basically I shoot a coat by feel and now that is a bit wet, all I have to do is go over it again and hit any dry spots. Don't let these guys fool you on the internet/tv/magazines. You have to paint in the way that works for you, your gun, your paint, your garage, your compressor, on and on. BTW the distance from the panel came from getting used to spraying single stage metallic paints a lot in the 80's By spraying from a distance you get less mottling as it would even out the flakes better (think crop dusting) - for me at least - some one else maybe not. Depends again on a lot of things. Please - ask as many questions as you want even if they seem real simple - Jerry

      @@LakesideAutobody thank you I will keep it in mind, I'll subscribe, thanks for the explanations. I can relate to spraying it your own way because the technique I'm using best suits me too. I use 17 PSI, a tekna prolite and 4-6" away using a massive amount of overlap and a quick speed. that also seems to reduce mottling because all I practice with is metallic base coat and mottling is a major problem for me. not any more, now my biggest problem is dirt even in my homemade spray booth

      No reason. Just used to doing it that way. Tiger stripes sometimes happen if your pattern is too wide and the ends of the pattern are heavier than the middle or vice versa. Too fix that you can give it a drop coat or mist coat on your last heavy coat like this - ua-cam.com/video/yGCpM6Cwhb0/v-deo.html Basically, you crop dust it to even it out or even any metallic flakes which there were none in this case but it still has the same effect :)

      This is automotive paint so yes it does have protection from sun, ultraviolet rays, and other elements. I am focused on making videos right now but a body shop would charge anywhere from maybe 1000 on up depending on condition of the original paint and body. Urethane satin black automotive paint is a bit cheaper to spray though 'cause 1) it's black and 2) it's single stage (does not need a clear coat) so you may get a decent price somewhere.

      Awesome question! Unfortunately you have to leave whatever nibs are in it. However, that hood came out with no dust because of the method I demonstrated on making sure the dust is eliminated before spraying. You won't get fish eyes if your hands are clean and dry - that's more of a "book" thing. 99% of the nibs and dust you get in a paint job is from dust that's on the panel prior to painting it - not from the shop, the floor, cracks etc. Hope that helps :)

    • @lcar9871
      @lcar9871 4 роки тому +1

      Sounds like you are having an issue with water vapor. If your compressor is running hot, especially on humid days, it will make a ton of water. The water is exiting your compressor as water vapor, which will go right through most water/oil separators filters, so you need to condense it. First, make sure your compressor isn't tight to a wall, under a bench etc. Air needs to circulate around it. I know one guy who has his in a little 3-sided shed off the back of his garage. Second is piping. I have about 70 feet of 3/4" iron pipe between my compressor and the water separator/regulator. Any water vapor exiting my compressor gets cooled into droplets and is caught in the separator. You can run pipe along the ceiling or, if the garage is small, build it radiator-style, up-down-up-down-up-down on a wall. Be sure to add a drain valve. Here's a link that may help: www.tptools.com/Modular-Metal-Piping-Kits,2035.html?b=s*air+line+diagram Note: Like Jerry, I also use a disposable plastic air filter at the gun, just in case...

    Couple questions.. Once you get dirt in your final product, it's there to stay, correct? And, I don't see a lot of dirt in your paint job... what are some of your techniques to eliminate this? I'm amazed!! Great job

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  4 роки тому +6

      True - once you get dirt you're done. The dust you get in your paint job is the dust that's on the panel before you spray the 1st coat. In other words it doesn't come from the floor, the ceiling, outside, etc. If you don't make sure every speck of dust is off the hood before spraying then you'll have dust in your paint job. Watch as I blow the dust and wipe with my bare hand at the same time - don't stop that process till you feel nothing but clean smooth surface. Final step is wipe with tack cloth then paint. People will say you are going to get fish eyes but I never do and have used this process in body shops all my life.
      As a review: Wipe clean w/ wax and grease remover, blow and wipe clean with clean dry hand, wipe with tack cloth, paint - Hope that helps - let me know if it does, I'd love to hear how it goes - Jerry

    Does primer matter or just no primer on matte colors?

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  2 роки тому +1

      You can use primer under it. You can use matte colors over properly prepared OEM paint, primer, or sealer and it's going to look the same. Hope that answers your ? 😊

    How does this matte hold up to UV exposure

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  3 роки тому

      Excellent - the car has sat outside all summer in the hot sun and looks exactly the same as the day I painted it. It is an auto quality paint so it should hold up for a lot of years. I plan on keeping the car for a year or two so we'll see - I think it'll be fine though.

    How much did you sand it down before paint

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  2 роки тому +1

      Just till it's smooth. You can DA sand your hood with anything from 220-320 and you should be fine
