    Listen, I'm not one of those people who claim veganism cures all diseases but bear with me:
    I'm 23. Was diagnosed at 21, suspected I had PCOS since I was 19 but have been experiencing symptoms since I was 12. PCOS has been the culprit of some of the worst times of my life.
    Excruciating period cramps - to the point I couldn't move;
    Extremely heavy flow - to the point nearly all my jeans have permanent blood stains;
    Severe anemia - a doctor even told me I needed to go straight to the ER after getting my blood results;
    Severe anxiety;
    Mood swings;
    Hair thinning on my head but growing strong everywhere else;
    Several months on a row without periods;
    5 weeks long bleedings /on a row;
    Tendency to gain weight, no matter how little/healthy I ate;
    Believing I was not feminine enough.
    Let me tell you that my diagnosis came around the same time I stopped eating animal products and it wasn't intentional. (I'm here primarily for the animals). I made some adjustments to my diet along the way, when I was figuring out how to eat properly. About 6 months into veganism, once I started eating only whole foods, no sugar, no gluten... PLEASE BELIEVE ME when I say I had some of my best periods EVER.
    - virtually no pain, just some discomfort but like a 1 out of 10.
    - dropped about 5kg without actually trying
    - regular periods, to the point my app would accurately predict them
    - 3 to 4 days periods instead of 7ish onward
    - light flow WITHOUT those huge clots
    - last week I got some blood tests and I did NOT have anemia /finally!!!!
    Of course I eventually learned about junk vegan food but I SURE notice the difference within one or two months and it takes me as long to get back on track.
    SO PLEASE, if you've been told to just take the pill and endure PCOS until you want to get pregnant or reach the menopause, just give whole food plant based diet a try. Take it from me, some symptoms can/will be harder to tackle but WFPB completely changed my life and my relationship with my body and my menstruation.

      Hey hun, hydrogen peroxide gets blood out if clothes like magic. It dissolves the proteins, and it washed right out. I've used it on all my clothes with no bleaching or damage to them. I've not tried it in wool or silk (silk is just proteins and water anyway).
      Glad you're periods are under control now. Cheers!

      @@1000wastedwords yes, I've tried it mostly on my underwear. Sometimes I would get stains while at school (I commute for an hour and a half) and the blood would dry and leave that yellowish hue on the stitched fabric inside the jeans. Oh well!

      I’ve had PCOS all my life. Going WFPB did not cure it. I went vegan for the animals so that’s fine, but, it doesn’t work for everyone. Also, across the board every single doctor will tell you to eat little to no carbs to fix it. So it isn’t just people picking what they want to believe, that is what doctors tell you, and since PCOS causes infertility as well as a TON of other really distressing symptoms that affect quality of life, people want to fix it and they trust their doctors to help. If you don’t have PCOS then maybe you don’t get how hard and frustrating it is, especially to get any medical advice at all besides “cut carbs NAD take birth control” and the idea of going to a diet that is mainly carbs, when you’ve been told by every single doctor that carbs are wrecking your health, it’s a hard thing to consider. It’s not the same as believing that bacon is health food. It’s people’s health and literally monthly misery, not to mention infertility. It’s a big deal.

    I’m of the opinion that some conditions can be cured or helped by diet, and some can’t. BUT . . . eating vegan is never going to make a health problem worse if you’re doing it right. And you’ll probably help some of your problems, if not all.

    I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 15, so for HALF MY LIFE, I was suffering with all the symptoms. They got really bad a couple of years ago. Birth control just covered the problem, but didn’t actually fix it, and then made it worse. I refused medication, deciding instead to actually treat the cause and not the symptoms through diet and lifestyle. A vegan diet with some intermittent fasting and stress management (mostly meditation and things like yoga and ballet) and my PCOS symptoms-all of them- are gone. My hair is thick again, my skin is clear, hirsuitism is gone, my energy is back, no insulin resistance, no cysts, normal hormone levels, and I’m able to lose weight when before I was just trying to stop gaining it. All with no medications.

      With your hirsutism, did you see the thicker, course hairs you had start to become thinner or did you pluck them and they just never came back? Thank you for the video Mic. There definitely needs to be more videos made about this topic. I have almost all PCOS symptoms and it's one of the most frustrating things ever. I went vegan for the animals but I also hoped that a plant-based diet would help me drop some weight and overcome PCOS. I went whole foods, high carb, low fat and I gained about 15 pounds in one year. Super frustrating. What I have been moving to in the last few months is a lower-carb, higher-fat plant-based diet. I haven't noticed many changes besides that I burp a whole lot less and I feel that I have more energy. PCOS is a spectrum and some women do well with high carb and other's not so much. It's about listening to your body and trying to find what it needs. There are many women that do very well on a plant-based keto diet but it really makes eating restrictive. I find it difficult to stay in ketosis while eating plant-based, but it is possible. I hope all you ladies out there that are struggling with PCOS know that you are not alone, know you are loved and you are not your symptoms.

I got my first period when I was 9 (I am 25 now) and since then it was life full of pain ( to the point when I was fainting because I could not bare it), throwing up, too much hair growth, acne that covered basically my whole body, sometimes my period lasted 6 monhs, sometimes I haven't seen it for 6 months, weight lose was hard... I only got diagnosted about two years ago and I have medication. It helped a lot, but since going vegan last year, all the symptomps almost disappeared. ☺️ I feel much better and I am glad to help the animals and the planet :-)

    Healed PCOS on a FRUIT based high carb low fat RAW diet! Multiple cysts on my ovaries, painful periods, heavy flow, acne, mood swings, and serious depression from this. I was on birth control for 7 years but when I went off of it to heal, symptoms got so much worse. I even water fasted for 26 days because I was done with the pain (do not try this at all ladies). Healing is possible but it just takes time and consistency especially if your body got used to synthetic hormones for years. Thank you mike for making others more conscious with PCOS and the wonders veganism can do to help.. For those with debilitating menstrual cramps and have tried almost everything, I recommend trying a low fat diet for minimum, at least the week leading up to your period.
    I had terrible periods my whole life and when I found out fat intake was closely linked with excess estrogen and prostaglandins (the inflammation molecules that cause cramps) I started eating about 5-10% fat in calories daily (down from 20-25%) five days before my period. EVEN THEN I massively noticed the difference and only had to take one painkiller instead of the usual 8 per dsy

    I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 18. I struggled with my weight , found out I also had hypothyroidism. Over several years I yo-yoed with my weight and periods, I was married at one point and we were trying to conceive. I was put on metformin and that gives you chronic diarrhea. I made a commitment to my health much later (also after a divorce). I worked in a factory where I essentially was doing cardio on 12 hour shifts and lost 80 pounds from 2017 to 2018. In 2018 I found that I was cured of my hypothyroidism, or at least not exhibiting signs of it whatsoever. My periods were mostly normal. I did conceive with my new husband, but lost the baby. No I was not vegan at that time, I have decided to commit to being plant-based again though. I'm not "trying" for a baby anymore, but if I decided to I will consult a fertility doctor. I wanted to thank you for addressing this topic. Though my pregnancy failed this time, I saw significant results on a plant based diet. You're right, It's not a magic cure-all. Though I do feel like I never would have even conceived at all if it weren't for veganism, even if I wasn't vegan at the time. I still reaped the rewards. Now I know what is possible.

    Mic, can you please make a video related to diet and endometriosis?
    There isn’t much research on endo yet, even though 1 in 10 people born with uteruses experience symptoms.
    The “endo diet” suggests eating plant based except for eating fish, which if I’m not mistaken will be horrible for endo symptoms as well as in general because of how unhealthy it is to eat marine animals.
    I believe this is suggested solely for omega 3 which can obviously be found in vegan forms.
    I would really appreciate a video on this, I experience the pain of endo and it is horrible - not many people address it, especially specifically in relation to vegan eating

I tried for 1.5 years before my mom told me to watch Forks Over Knives. That changed my life. 3 weeks later I got a period only 30 days after my last one! 6 months later I was finally pregnant! I probably could have got pregnant even sooner, but it turns out I have only one functional ovary and fallopian tube 🤷‍♀️

    Some things you only truly understand when you go through them yourself.
    And thats one of them.
    I myself also "cured" my pcos with a mostly wfpb diet, when prior to that, I would never believed the impact that food has on that issue.
    But I have to say, I think the mechanisms in wich the diet change works to regulate ones endocrine system goes way beyond insulin management.
    I think it has something to do with endocrine disrupters found in milk and also the high content of saturated fat and iron in animal flesh, because I do def notice a difference in my flow
    when I eat a vegan diet with more fat rich foods or when I take iron supplements versus when I do eat more lightly with less nut butter, oils and such.
    So, I think its more than just being overweight and having diabetes. Defently plays a role, but its more complex.

    It has been a goal of mine to go vegan. In my efforts I started eating much healthier and losing significant weight for the first time. I was shocked that got pregnant shortly afterwards. It’s so hard to eat right while pregnant, but I still try to change my eating habits and plan to continue striving towards a vegan lifestyle.

    My PCOS was diagnosed after having no period for about a year after coming off the pill. My doctor told me the only way to handle is by taking the pill again... I asked her about nutrition but she said I couldn't do anything. After doing my own research I went vegan, a few months later my period came back and now (2 years later) i have pretty regular cycles again.
    So sad the doctors don't know anything about nutrition...

Got pregnant within those 3 months.

    Can we hope for a video on menopausal symptoms? If you search UA-cam, all that comes up is keto. At a time when women's risk for heart attack and stroke drastically increases, recommending a diet low in carbs and high in saturated fat is crazy but that is what you find.

      Yes, it's called metformin; I'm taking it myself. It is used for high insulin levels/insulin resistance, which a lot of women with PCOS have - high insulin leads to high androgen levels, that's why metformin can help reducing PCOS symptoms.

    I was diagnosed with PCOS at 21 but it started at 16. I have all of the symptoms and could be the poster child for this syndrome. The only diet that has ever helped me lose weight is a whole food plant based diet. I’m still morbidly obese BUT the weight has been on a slow and steady decline, but at least it’s declining! I think the anti inflammatory benefits also help with many painful symptoms that go along with this disorder. I’m actually having an ovarian wedge resection (similar to ovary drilling) to try and reset the ovaries and hopefully reset my hormones and hopefully ease my symptoms faster. Thanks Mic for bringing this topic to the table! There has been very little research on this disorder. Love your videos!

      I don't have PCOS but I feel you. I always feel nervous when vegan diet is presented as a cure to all diseases and people back up their claims with anecdotal evidence. Sure, it doesn't hurt to eat as healthily as possible but unfortunately it doesn't always help or erase the disease. To tell people that their symptoms will disappear with eating more salad pretty much trivializes their disease and makes them feel like shit when it doesn't work.

But my hormonal treatment in sweden messed me up even more. I wasn't obese and didn't have acne but after the hormonal treatment I got acne and gained weight...Also I started to smell terrible and sweat more.
    I had lean PCOS, there are different types of PCOS...
    Yeah and Birth control messed me up even more. I almost died taking it.

    I reversed my symtomes in 2018 by going vegan, avoiding oils and eating lots of vedgetables, fruit, beans and grains. After 8 years trying i got pregnant naturally after just 6 months on a wfpb-diet. After the pregnancy I for some reason stoped eating vegan and all my symtomes came back. Since everyone here (sweden) recomend low carb for treating pcos i get confused and have a hard time sticking to the vegan diet i know helped me before. Low carb never worked for me, I just keep gaining weight and symtomes get worse. I am now trying again going wfpb, day three now only so trying to look for inspiration to keep going. Thank you for your video, so helpful!

    Just adding another success testimony here- I had PCOS from sometime in my teens until I was 22 and did a high carb raw food diet for a little over two weeks. I had vegan-leaning diet for the year leading up to that, but a loose diet really. I got my period back after nearly 9 months of having none. I had always been irregular/skipping months here and there before that, and since that first raw food "cleanse," I've stayed regular.
    I didn't even do the cleanse perfectly when it came to "raw." So don't be intimidated, give it a shot!

    Do you hear often enough how cool it is to have a guy care about these things?
    My own PCOS reversed already as soon as I left out the dairy (most difficult thing back then!) and the crappy carbs, but as soon as I became completely vegan, I felt much better over all. Since I developed some weird intolerances against any animal protein a few years ago, my body also reacts more sensitively to vegan crap. Whole food vegan is the way to go, but to be honest, I slip up more often than I should, and I know better (being a nutrition councellor myself and all). Until I manage to do better, I'll pay the price and fight with cravings, overblown appetite and stress eating :-/

    Not cure it but it will definitely help and I’m living proof of that. I have pcos and I’ve always been chunky not because of how I ate but because of pcos. Never having a natural period I’d have to have birth control to have one. About 7 years ago I changed my diet. I love Soda so I only have 1 or so a day or tea. I rarely eat meat. I’ve always preferred a healthier diet but those couple of things alone helped me lose weight (45 pounds) And eventually I started my period naturally. It’s very very easy to gain weight with pcos. I have developed a gluten and dairy allergy. Also allergic to eggs. I didn’t want to be on medicine so I changed my diet and it worked for me.

And I would have a couple a day and cut it down to one if any at all but I drink water and plenty of it. Pcos is so different in everyone it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what would help this person vs this person. My best friend has it as well. My weight fluctuates drastically hers doesn’t. I know how to lose weight and it’s not as easy for her. I live a healthy lifestyle. I’ve been with my husband for 14 years. I’m 30 by the way..& even he has said to numerous people her lifestyle, eating habits etc don’t add up to her weight. It’s just different for everyone. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I live with it, I would know.

I distinctly remember her saying I had PCOS! I’ve been vegan for 3 years & in my recent visit I was told I did not have PCOS & that I was misdiagnosed. I’m not sure if I reversed it, or it I was indeed misdiagnosed. I was so shocked!! I told the doc to check again lol

    I was diagnosed at 17 with PCOS. They put me on birth control bc I would have heavy periods that wouldn't stop for months. I finally got regulated and then my doctor did the worse thing they could have done for me which was they put me on a low carb diet. They said it would help with my weight issue. It did, but my PCOS got worse. Fast forward to 2016 I was doing low carb again like had for a while and decided in December of 2016 I was changing everything bc I watched forks over knives. In January 2017 I went vegan. With in 5 months my facial hair was getting better, my weight was getting better, my hair wasn't breaking off any more, my cystic acne was gone, my periods were lighter and shorter, my eyebrows started growing back, and my a1c dropped from a 5 to a 4. My PCOS isn't cured yet, but it's 10000x better than it was thanks to a vegan diet.
