I remember being in 4th grade with my friends and staying up until like 3am playing this on GameCube. Parents coming in and yelling at us to go to bed, and us pretending to be asleep.
I remember the Slam dunk contest. I was playing as Jason Richardson and I was going against Lebron, Kobe, and Tracy McGrady. I was lucky enough to make it to the finals and I was going against McGrady. I turned off the game after that. There was no way that I can top that dunk.
The first time I did a 720 I actually screamed at the TV. I felt like I accomplished something. That mode made you feel like you were actually doing the dunk. Your timing had to be on point with the gather, jump, and dunk animations and twirling the joystick to do 360s, 540s, and 720s added another layer of challenge

I still have this game and everything about it is great, except for dynasty mode. That was kind of a disappointment in being realistic because there’s three things that I wish EA could’ve changed there. 1. The ability to fire and hire new head coaches rather than just always have the same coach on the sideline no matter how you perform on the court. 2. The ability to edit players names on all teams because the generic players in the draft just have a ton of unrealistic names, like I’d rather have a guy on my team named “Corey Alexander” or “Eric Johnson” instead of names like “Manu Murray” or “Odalfo Lawson” 3. The ability to control more than one team. Cause I played it recently where Tony Parker left the Spurs after the 2004-05 season to sign with the Lakers, and all CPU did to replace him at PG for the Spurs was sign Chris Whitney.

Don't know what it was about 2005 that made game developers go off and make some of the greatest sports games of all time: NFL 2K5, NBA Live 2005, MVP Baseball 2005, Madden 2005. What a shame that the sports game industry stopped putting in effort.
I loved that the player ratings were more spread out. Average players were in the 60s while great players were in the 80s and only a few players like kobe were in the 90s. Made better players feel special. 2k has everyone in the 80s and 90s

That dunk contest mode was like the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater of basketball games. Somewhat unrealistic but just close enough to pass and inspire future dunks.
There is also a level of basketball IQ from the ai in this game that gives real fans pure joy. My first full game I played after not playing for some time, the CPU was killing me with the hop step. I mistimed my blocks and every post attempt they did was a hop step that worked for about a quarter and a half. I caught on, got 2 or 3 clean blocks, and the CPU ai stopped doing hop steps and just went straight up immediately for quick layups. This was on rookie. But they noticed I caught on and I didn't see another hop step all game. To be from 2004, with that level of detail from Live was wild because this mostly played like an arcade style game for fun.
