Great episode ! Provisioning a sailboat for extensive travel has always fascinated me. I bought a book, " The Essential Galley Companion " just to help me wrap my head around it. There is so much involved and Grace, you did a killer job of explaining that. You must have been thankful for the help you got. It's the organizational skills your mom possesses that I lack, I wish I could plug into her brain and get some of it😀. Hey Bill how ironic you change out all those blocks and it's the seizing on a halyard clasp that bites you in the ass, what? Also I tried complimenting your narrating skills but apparently someone in upper management feels a little coaching may be in order😅. I tried buddy, I tried 🤣🤣 Good stuff guys!! Be well !!!
I know you are already there but wanted experience the pre- voyage preparations. We’ve been building a house this year and has consumed so much time and energy. Love you guys and as always thanks for sharing your journey 😊
@@CalicoSkiesSailing Charlotte, Vermont . Closer to the lake closer to the boat and smaller though I did put in a designated shop to better tackle projects.
We found a Seal-a-Meal and O2 absorbers helped a lot with keeping dry goods fresh and free of critters. With careful use the bags can be used several times. O2 absorbers will kill critters in Tupperware as well. Beer is one of the hardest to store. Cans are not very strong on their sides and there is never enough room. When a can bursts, it's such a mess. You're underway at this point. Safe travels.
Provisioning a boat for an extended crusie has to be arguably the worst job. Hats off to you Grace for pulling it all together.I see Bill took care of the beers. 👍
So overwhelming! Great job planning and finding space. Amazing what you accomplished! I was a bit surprised to see some items (I.e. cookies) that were left in cardboard packages. I also realize Rubbermaid like items, takes up space - so it all comes down to utilizing packaging that can be used for a multitude of uses and keeping the creatures out. I’ve watched a couple of your crossing updates and am so excited for you. What an adventure of a lifetime. Stay safe and enjoy.
thank you for sharing such an informative video! I really appreciate seeing what you stock up on and how you store it all, very impressive. It must be a challenge to know what to do with leftovers, etc. However, I must say that seems like an alarming number of ziplock bags which will become trash in the beautiful South Pacific and some of the most pristine environments our earth has left. I love my washable and reusable silicone zipper containers but when funds are limited, those ziplocs you have can also be easily turned inside out to wash and dry, then used a dozen times!
5:13 Hey Bill, go up the mast and fix that shackle seizing! 😂 Laughing with you, not at you. If only we could drop back in time! lol I heard yawl made it. Congratulations 🎉🍾🎊!
Really helpful provisioning tips and method. Thanks for taking the time to film in the midst of all the chaos. I have a similar size boat. I'm wondering where all the spares and tools are stored. It seems every nook and cranny is used for food and beverage.
Buying is easy, putting it away is a little more difficult 😂... Good luck , can't wait for the journey to start , Delos just left the Marqezas ... you might run into each other down the road..Stay Safe ..
I have no idea where I'm going to stash my provisions on my tiny boat. Collapsible containers like you have under your table is an awesome idea that I hadn't thought of before. I'll have to do some container provisioning before I do my boat provisioning so that I'll have someplace to put it all.
Loved this episode. Grace at the risk of sounding creepy, you look younger and more beautiful lately. We go through life being our own worst judge staring into a mirror. I do it too. It is why I try to tastefully compliment people when and where I can. Regards from South Africa.
French Poly has everything, but its all in one place, Tahiti. And, expensive ? OFF THE CHARTS ! Especially things you can definitely store on the boat, Coffee for instance ! Vegi's, there's a secret, you go to little farms that aren't even advertised, are somewhat secret. That sailbag sure looks good !
In order to reduce critters in pasta, rice and flower you need to freeze all of it for a few days and then divide everything in portions so if one bag gets contaminated the others should be fine.. A bit late now, but it is something for the future... Have a safe trip!!
Great Video-- I was taking notes as I'm heading off around Australia soon(ish) and will be heading into pretty remote parts. I like the layout of your spreadsheet and would love to see a video of the type of food you prepare both at sea and at anchor. btw, you made me think about my blocks and whether they need replacing.....
It was a pleasure to meet your mom grace, well looks like you guys are well on your way for that passage, your probably half way there by the time this video aired, safe passage Grace and Bill :)
Really nice that your mom could make it down, I'm sure there will be holiday trips home, but it's going to be a long time before Calico Skies is this close to the US and family again. During this episode while you were provisioning, I couldn't help but think what would be a good way to help stretch this haul of provisions even a little farther.... I know, catching a big ole Wahoo!
It's one of the things that I still need to figure out. I need to sit down and try writing out a weekly menu. Add some variety and then hopefully just scale up from there ? It's definitely a bit daunting.
At 3 minute mark in the market, I noticed a cross in the background. A good sign. What a daunting, but necessary task to take on. I find it amazing that you can find places to store all that food into such a small living space. Great job! I can’t wait to see the finished results.
You have to rent a boat stretcher. One day you will have a Calico Skies II. I have foreseen it. Who knows? Delos may be for sale soon. And please, allow me to say, Grace, you are such a KEEPER!
Wow! Your experience is showing. 😉 #Strategy Love that your Mom got to visit and help. Provisioning seems like such a challenge! Planning, estimating quantity, inventorying and STORING. I can imagine anxiety can get high,. Look forward to your passage.
Grace, may I recommend that you consider vacuum sealing of all your pasta and other dry foods. The lack of oxygen in the container or bag prevents any "gremlins" from hatching and your food remains safe. I vacuum seal food in bags as well as in jars. Vacuum sealing of food is a fabulous way of preserving your precious cargo over a longer period of time. Thanks for another great video. Love & light from Cape Town. ❤
Cheers to a job well done! Here is a recipe for Irish Cream (Bailey's) it's super easy to make if you have a blender and it's way cheaper than Bailey's. 1 can sweetened condensed milk, 1 cup heavy cream, 2 tbls. chocolate syrup, 1 teas. instant coffee 1 teas. vanilla, 1/4 teas. almond extract blend in the blender then add 1 2/3 cups whiskey blend again. Enjoy the adventure!!🌏🏜🏝⛵⚓
I’d love to be a fly on the hull the night Bill says he doesn’t want chicken tonight he would rather have pasta. Be ya he gets layered. Nice packing Grace, lucky you raised the water line.
It’s a mammoth task to do for an extended voyage, anyone who might think that you’re making a bit of a big deal of it hasn’t tried for themselves yet. Well done for the vid, the narrative kept it rolling along well, not always easy to do when covering a subject that some may find of limited interest. Not me I might add, provisioning has never been my strong suit and on too many occasions I’ve found myself with another few days to go ‘till access to fresh supplies, mulling over just how I’m going to make two tins of Borlotti beans, a bag of dried prunes, five tins of mixed chopped veg, two chicken cuppa-soups, a manky cabbage and a bottle of cheap Calvados, into a series of appetising and nutritious meals. ….And then Bill goes and reels in a decent sized Wahoo just to mess the job up. 😂 Hope that you’re still making good miles and enjoying the big beautiful blue. Cheers, R. 😎👍🍻
That provisioning is like planning meals for an entire Marine Battalion that is in the field on an exercise. Fortunately for the marines they have food service staff to haul and prep it for the marines. Im just glad I dont have to plan or provision like that. How cow dats a lotta food.
Love the episode....but don't think you have enough rum!...... I'm in awe of your planning process and the spreadsheet. I would have thrown up my hands and just bought as many cans of tuna and bottles of rum as I could fit in the boat...but I'm a guy.......and weevils.....isn't that just extra protein??
Peter and me would get along nicely, my GF hates shopping with me because I put everything were it is supposed to be...lol....she is aslo an erratic shopper...
Grace, we were wondering how this added stress of provisioning for 6 months effected your Health? My wife and I can't seem to shop for a week, let alone six months!
350 ziplocks? Seems like a lot of plastic. Have you considered an impulse sealer? You can cut right below the seal on packages and then reseal the package it came in for next time just a little shorter. It would drastically reduce your plastic consumption.
yo! Calico friends!! so fun to hang with you in LaCruz! Grace, I will pay you $5000.00 to do my provisioning in April 2025 before I jump....even pay expenses....u da bomb! Was fun meeting Momma too! Hope the crossing is going well.....Brian "Lawnboy" Wade....S/V Wades Aweigh!

Hi! I noticed that you don't remove labels? some people remove labels form all cans etc to get rid of the paper and write on the tins and packets instead...is there a reason that you don't?

LOL Seems to be a popular video type!
I love watching people’s provisioning and long Pacific crossings, especially with Starlink updates throughout the voyage!
Glad your Mom could visit and help. What a monumental task the provisioning is. Looking forward to your passage. Thanks for sharing.
Super cool your mom was there to help. Awesome.
Yes it was!
Freezing those bugs and eggs eradicates them. Just freeze for a few days. Maybe alternate your bags or containers until all are done
I love provisioning videos! Great job Grace. I’d be interested in your meal planning.
Yay! Thank you!
That looks like an awesome grocery store , I didn’t do much exploring in La Cruz , great to know , what? A Costco too , super spot to provision!
It's so good!

you know there is translate text on google it uses your camera on your phone, I mention it watching you struggle with the ingredients

Nice job! Just curious what your go to meals are on a long passage ? Be safe out there. Cheers 🍻

LOL Calico is so heavy right now, could feel it shoving her off the dock
When you’re filling the boat with food and supplies does the weight of everything matter on what side or fwd and aft you pack stuff.
We keep the heavier things stored down low, our water line def sank down a few inches
Well done ! 👍🦘
Thank you! Cheers!
no peeling labels? thats were them bugs hide
Do you guys also, remove all the labels from tins to prevent bugs living between the label and tin? I saw it on Delos and wasn’t sure if that’s a normal thing to do.
We don't typically, we prob should but have been lucky thus far.
Great episode as always. Is there any chance you have a link to a provisioning or even better inventory list?
Thank you!! hmm good idea, too bad our website is down right now lol
Will the boat sit noticeably lower in the water? Will it handle differently?
She is heavier but we aren't seeing a performance change, monohulls are good at handling weight
Must be across the Pacific Ocean?
👍🏽
Did you guys replace any of the in mast blocks also?
We did replace them, Didn't recheck the seizing wire on the shackles ugh
Did Kazza show you some pointers? It looks like you did a great job!!
Grace and Kazza are both food hoarders HA
@@CalicoSkiesSailing Bet you are glad!!!
looks like you have lots to eat
Yep! Lot of stores
Wow!!!where you going to put all that stuff...i owned a 35 foot Hunter...that would fill it up...One Question? Where you gonna sleep???
LOL we got it all away somehow. Calico has good storage!
Hi! I noticed that you don't remove labels? some people remove labels form all cans etc to get rid of the paper and write on the tins and packets instead...is there a reason that you don't?
We should lol, we haven't had to many issue with bugs
@@CalicoSkiesSailing I see fair enough
Just ask chat gpt to write yr shopping list in future. Won’t be long before it knows enough to provision trip to french polynesia🎉🎉
LOL
It’s more stressful to watch than the sailing.
Hahaha yea such a mission!
🧿👍
You really screwed up on this one. When you come to visit I'm putting you to work organizing my closets!
LOL Max!
1,700 pesos is $1000
You and Kazza are the same
LOL both food hoarders!
Clearly watching too much of this stuff when you recognize people in the crowd scenes and have been in those same stores.
LOL similar storylines intersecting
Boring
You’re already in the Marquesas, how much food was left?
Plenty :)
