Truly an amazing episode as these seasoned sailors explore their inner most feelings arriving after a grueling 21,2 day voyage to French Polynesia from Mexico. We are all thrilled with delight that they conquered their fears to complete their dream aboard Calico Skies, such an unfiltered passage, one which has inspired us all. Thank you both for showing the essence of sailing the Pacific on a 36ft boat.

You really captured the thoughts that occur to anyone who, as Bill said, is not entirely crazy and doing a big passage.
The advice about not letting your guard down towards the end just because you’re nearly at the destination rang especially true and it is the same advice that my elder brother gave me 40 years ago, just before I left to do the big jump across to the Marquesas.
He’d done it nearly ten years before and they broke the gooseneck, thanks to an unplanned gybe as a squall hit when they were less than 24 hours from the end.
He admitted that they’d decided to have a “one day to go” feast, knowing that they’d have fresh food soon, and were all below while it was being served up, the only time that there hadn’t been anyone above deck since departure.
It hurt the main quite badly and ripped the lower 15’ of riveted-on track out of their mast. Not fun to deal with in 30ish knots of wind and much the same sea state as you encountered during the last couple of days.
He broke a finger and managed to dislocate his thumb in the ensuing sh’fight, so his warning was well validated as a lesson hard learned.
I made it across much as you did, beautiful conditions for the most part and just those iffy seas a day or two out from the end. I think they’re more or less a fixture tbh, a lot of other people I knew met them too.
It really is one of the most epic landfalls, made so much more intense by the absence of anything but the vastness of the ocean for such a long time. You captured it beautifully, especially the wish to just sit on the boat, finally peaceful at anchor, drinking it in with all your senses heightened to it by the contrast of the preceding weeks underway.
Well done both of you and thank you for making these wonderful videos that have allowed so many people to travel with you, some to relive experiences of their younger days, some to see the world through a sailor’s eyes and perhaps have the yen to travel the world by boat lit in their souls.
    Stay safe, well and happy.
    Cheers! R. 😎👍🍻

You made it and so did your friends. I understand why you would want to just sit and look .it is beautiful. I have a thought. you cook with flame in side the boat. why couldn't you of cooked the bacon and eggs on the grill outside it would of been cooler and not hot and stuffy 🤔 just a thought. use your fryin pan outside on the grill when it's hot down below.

    @WillN2Go1 7 днів тому

Terrific video. Good videos of the waves. After sailing 7500 nMiles last year, crossing the Pacific and being in 3-4 meter waves, I think one of the most dangerous things might be getting 'pooped' washed with a large wave from behind that shoots right down the companion way. In all those waves, distance, storms, we caught waves only a couple of times in the dinghy hanging off the back. Waves coming over the bows and even the saloon and dodger were common. So pooping waves seem to be extremely rare. The first one some sailors might see after years sailing might be the one that sinks the boat and them leaving no trace. I think it might be good practice to keep an eye aft and if the sugar scoop is getting washed pretty good -- maybe close the companion way -- just in case.
The digital compass might need a reset, or a readjustment. I noticed when I sailed my boat away from the marina where I'd bought it that the digital compass was 180° wrong. I googled and asked... No information. Talking with the previous owner... I'm pretty sure it hadn't 'just happened' when I sailed away. Finally I had some techs aboard. They looked up the Raymarine instructions online. (I could never find these, or even a mention that they existed. Calling Raymarine was utterly useless. Said my unit was too old (20 years). And yet the techs in less than five minutes zeroed it in.
I'm pretty good with math, but adding and subtracting 180° is just too difficult.
On my boat I have a 'Flux Gate Compass' it's almost directly below the binnacle and very close to the engine -- so I don't think it's magnetic. It's still a black box to me... but when I find some info on the blogs I'll come up to speed. This may be where your compass problems reside. (Don't forget your smart phone has GPS and a pretty good compass in it. If I was going to reset a major instrument using it, I'd restart the phone. Sometimes on my iPhone it gets out of whack.
On my new B&G chartplotter/radar package.... the chartplotter does almost nothing (it's like a weak version of the Navionics App but with radar. Trying to find out why the radar can't track targets, after ten days of Googling (Google is becoming almost useless. I found a $600 or $2500 unit that seems to be required. Also "Acquire Targets" has been replaced with "Watch Targets" but no where on their website or in the manual does it say this.
There's a GPS in the chartplotter, but... apparently I need something like the flux gate before any of it really works.
I'm beefing a lot, but I have four full months of 24/day sailing using B&G -it's still a complete pain. It's got 4-5 'menu' buttons some on the screen that all do similar things. It's not at all intuitive.
Autopilot is critical. I know a lot of people, some with very expensive boats who this is the bane of their sailing life. If it's over worked, doesn't have stops or cushions at the extremes, the autopilot will break. The most important first step is to balance the sails so the boat doesn't immediately head up or down. I'm lucky, the people who bought my boat from Hunter were engineers, a lot of upgrades including a Whitlock steering system -- all stainless steel shafts and gear boxes. A solid shaft for the rudder. No cables or quadrant. My old autopilot is bullet proof. They also installed a Hyrdovane. Good luck.
