    A beauty from Cosmo. Jeff really moved ELO on after their first disjointed album to provide us with some superb musical experiences. Yes it’s a sad song but such a melodic piece with a hint of the orchestral work to come later. Nice review.

    Nice to see you've landed in the early years of ELO. Just a matter of time before you will get to "Kuiama", my absolute favourite song from the pre-Eldorado era.
    I can't imagine Cosmo will leave that one out 😎

    Harri, sorry to bring you down with this poignant ballad. But I'm glad you were able to also focus on the beauty of the instrumentation. My absolute favorite part is the trading off between the violins and cellos, heard here beginning a couple seconds after the 4:16 mark. Just gorgeous. (As for John Lennon, yes, I could totally hear him singing this song. I don't know if he knew it or not, but if he did I'm certain he was moved by it, given the tragic loss of his mother, which affected him so deeply.)

      I could even hear delicate little runs of 'trills' being played in the background behind the violins and cellos by some sort of woodwind or something. Most songwriters wouldn't bother with these embellishments, but not so with Jeff Lynne.

    I really enjoyed listening to this song again, as well as your review. As an early teenager back in the late 70's, I never really appreciated the meaning behind the words. I just enjoyed the music and Jeff's vocals. This was prog. rock era E.L.O. and even their mid-late 70's releases have a hint of prog. here and there. Kuiama and In Old England Town are other progressive rock songs they released around the same time. Oh and also 10538 Overture with that heavy Cello backing - can't forget that one.

    On the UK release of ELO 2, this song was called "Momma", it was changed to '''Mama" on the American release. Kuiama from the ELO 2 album is an excellent anti-war track, running for over eleven minutes, Kuiama is ELO's longest ever recording.

    Sure, this is a sad song. But it's a powerful song. It doesn't tell us the fate of the girl. What it _does_ tell us, however, is that her mother gave her good advice - life must go on until the end. I'm not sure how to interpret the last verse, but no matter what, the advice is true: life is hard sometimes, and often when it's hardest, you find yourself alone.
    So while it's a sad song, it can be understood as a powerful and enabling song - positive, even. That's so typical of Jeff's lyrics. The dramatic _Eldorado Finale_ , in all its grandeur, is tragic. I think _Horace Wimp_ has an, if not tragic, then certainly reflective and contrasting ending "go out and find yourself a life!" You can never be sure about Jeff's songs. Like I said in a comment elsewhere, he can make _Happy Birthday To You_ into a funeral hymn. (And he did!)
    It is in my opinion very interesting to compare _Momma_ with at least two other songs, one much earlier, and one much later. Both about strong, admirable girls/women, trying hard to manage or succeed with their lives, and having hard times doing so. One is _The Lady Who Said She Could Fly_ from the Idle Race's first album The Birthday Party (1968 - which has a few fun tracks, but the fun tracks are just as sad and tragic as the others - their lyrics are not by your typical 21-year old - I'd compare him with Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd, or Brian Wilson, two other guys who seem to have had the minds of old men since their youth), and the other is _Moment In Paradise_ from the 2001 album Zoom. That's a span of 33 years, from a fairly young Jeff (21) with the mindset of an old sage, to a mature Jeff (54), with experience now confirming his unusual early wisdom. I say that's a very clever guy. Of course, Zoom didn't register much anywhere. So the old man does it again, when he's 66. Twice, just to make sure we know it's not luck, but experience, wisdom, and hard work and stubborn persistence.
    He's at the same time so extraordinarily human, and so completely from out of this world.
    That is the power that I find in songs like this, both to embrace pain, hardship, defeat, even total destruction, and to have, gain hold of, and retain, strength, trust, hope willpower. I could use quotes from most of his songs to show this, but one is "Nowhere to go but it's on with the show". I don't think I can say Jeff's song have saved my life, but they sure represent a philosophy I try my best to stick to.

    • @Cosmo-Kramer
      @Cosmo-Kramer 2 роки тому +1

      Great comment, lhp. I'm curious, which song from, Alone In The Universe, were you alluding to when you said Jeff, "does it again, when he's 66".

    • @lhpl
      @lhpl 2 роки тому +2

      @@Cosmo-Kramer Oh, I see how my comment is confusing. I didn't mean to imply that he had made the exact same type of song on the two latest records, although I do think there are songs that have a similar message. But I really haven't listened too them enough to be sure.
      There are other songs about strong/struggling women though. _Oh No Not Susan_ comes to mind, just to name one more.

We're actually very deep into the 50-song tour I've been taking Harri on of ELO's catalog. Once 50 is reached, I'm going to pivot away from ELO to other artists. But, I will periodically be submitting additional ELO tracks along the way.
