The fact that you could buy this to go camping and not spend $10k on a 12v setup, but still be able to run all appliances from home, makes this very attractive.
@graemeanderson7294 10k is ridiculous but for $500 your ain't running induction cooking ect. I spent just over 1k aud with the cheap kings stuff. That gives me 240ah of lithium and a 3kw inverter. The battery system doesn’t impede on the space, the battery sits between the beams. The rear motors sit in between the beams and there is no tail shaft. About time a range extender was back, the old hybrid stuff is silly. The clearance might be correct, since the only thing coming of the centre axis at the frame to the hub is the independent drive shafts.
It’s success is going to rely on the government extending the PHEV FBT exemption past April of next year - BYD dealers I have spoken to don’t seem to think it will arrive in time.
More of a recreational vehicle than a work one I think. The main problem is its size. It’s bigger than a Ranger/Hilux, so good luck parking it at the local shopping centre, where the car parks seem to be getting smaller and smaller. Anyone who’s had to park beside a F150/Silverado/Ram can attest to that. So it may struggle to gain utility as a city runabout. I think its tow rating is to keep the GCM within limits, as the vehicle itself is quite heavy. Towing something that is heavier than the tow vehicle isn’t a great idea anyway. Just wait until the Ranger PHEV comes out. I expect it to be $20K dearer, have less electric range, be no better built and have less appointments than the Shark.
There is nothing like this on the market in Australia, it potentially is amazing. So i think the pricing is good. It will come down if and when there is some competition.
in Mexico, BYD Shark starts at $53K USD equivalent while the base Hilux starts at $20K. Even Toyota Tacoma Hybrid in the US start at mid $40K which is where the Hilux tops out in Mexican market
Will it break the Hilux/Ranger duopoly, or will the need for towing 3 boats across the Simpson desert while camping on the daily commute habits of hilux ranger drivers be to much?

@@johnwayne8475 actually one of the features is that the drive train can be switched around - in the shark the front wheels can be directly engaged by the petrol engine. And when I think about it, if the battery is not able to be used because it is empty, but there is plenty of petrol - then the petrol engine is ultimately the source of energy (or the petrol is the source actually). Surely it is more efficient to output the energy in such a way as to most directly drive the wheels? What advantage in efficiency could be gained by going from the petrol, to the petrol engine, to the electric motor, to the wheels, as opposed to going from the petrol, to the petrol engine, to the wheels?

At least I don't think so - happy to be wrong. (That setup I noticed quite a few times last time I drove that road; and they were sitting on a 110kph. Hope the caravans weren't overweight...)
There's an Aussie in Mexico that purchased one of these. He does updates to give us the heads up on what to expect. He has depleted the battery through in experience. His experience thus far into ownership, the battery power is not an issue, the truck never loses power after he altered the percentage of charge. Hope this helps.

Yeah what was base price falcon or commodore base Ute back in the day. 80k for a Ute and it’s a bargain because of the current crop and its HYBRID. Cost of living crisis is real. Tradies should be able to afford it I guess.
When is the full EV version coming? Cramming two technologies into the same space is a rubbish idea and only done to appease petrol heads that don’t have a clue!
Looking at the trims they still uses it’s suv segment and design in pick up trucks but lacking its suv horsepower. This isn’t going to sell for ordinary pick up truck consumers, just ask ford or traditional pick up truck manufacturers. You know what, they lack jeep type of horsepower for rural usage. Chinese car makers have relatively good infrastructure back in rural China so they don’t understand how crucial it is to have horsepower and towing in pick up trucks, it isn’t simply about towing stuff on flat ground, Subaru forester with a hitch can do better on these rural flat lands. What it needs is cybertruck type of demonstration to drive on mountains, marketing and design done wrong, money wasted.
You have a point but you have to compare it to the upcoming phev ranger rather than the ice version. Rumours have that at close to 90k before on roads. So this should be significantly cheaper.
There are no competitors for this ute in the segment - None have a similar powertrain. Edit: I'm wrong, didn't realise the Ranger PHEV was also coming in soon, but this will under cut the Ranger's price significantly.
BYD is the world leader on this kind of hybrid technology... no one is close, not even Toyota who are licensing this tech. to use on the Hilux - and so why would it be cheaper? no one can do it but BYD. I dont even like BYD but they have little competiton among their own Chinese cousins and so the can ask a high price because their battery and hybrid tech is unique. You kind of have to ask yourself why someone like GWM is so behind...

Would love to get this for myself and our guys as a work truck.

It will come down if and when there is some competition.

do you have any continuously ascending road longer than Tibet? Bao 5 are everywhere there.
I think you are missing the point of this hybrid system, the petrol engine is there to charge the battery rather than for propulsion.
@@yanbolyb the bao looks amazing but a ute should at least sometimes be more fully loaded. Anyway looks like something to be tested, it will be fun to find out. At least I don't think so - happy to be wrong. (That setup I noticed quite a few times last time I drove that road; and they were sitting on a 110kph. Hope the caravans weren't overweight...)

the fact Toyota have licensed this tech for the Hilux says it all - I think when all the Chinese brands move to a 'generator' PHEV system it ends the Toyota style hybrid system for good.
Is there two models or just the one?
It seems like it gonna have two variants. You can check the specific review from Carsauce. They test drive it in China with the exact same right hand drive model which will be in Australian market soon.
Needs to be sharper pricing 2.5 ton a drawback
This is the first truck, i think it can do more but they are being sure, so they dont get sued, but their next will have to tow more, look up byd commercial vehicles, they can make cars that can tow.
