It is encouraging to know that Titanic's fate did, in some ways, contribute to saving lives of her sister ship. If people are going to make mistakes, it is best to learn from them. That being said, a lesson to be taken from Britannic: "Don't panic."

Fun Fact, the wreck, even though it was only in 400ft of water, was not discovered until 1975. Jacques Cousteau was the discoverer. Jacques Cousteau was also famous for his exploration of the wrecks of Truk Lagoon.
A lot of that is because of where it sank. The area of the ocean it sank in is far different from the area that Titanic sank. It also helps that it's in such relatively shallower water. You can actually dive to the Britanic which is something that's impossible to do with the Titanic.
@@pyrerock well you can't free dive or scuba dive down that deep. You can only dive around 130ft, whereas the ship sank around 400ft. But it is a lot easier to get to for sure.

Titanic split between the 3rd and 4th funnels Britannic, at the surface, was intact and then at the ocean floor its bow broke off..

No, you'd need completely different equipment than a normal dive. You'd need to be tethered with oxygen and hot water continously pumped into your suit. Even with Nitrox you could only go 110ft commercially. I'm a dive master. Regular suit, regulators, and tanks would not be sufficient to make such a dive.

The olympic class did have a hard time but the Olympic herself had one hell of a career, she garnered the nick name "Old Reliable" by Canadian troops, in Halifax they have the Olympic garden named after her. she has a Submarine kill to her name, she rammed it with her bow first then her Prop did the rest. she saved sailors of the French ship Provincia. the captian was critized for the move since stopping the ship to take on survivors with enemys in the area was dangerous. a large ships best defense is their speed.

The Titanic is a great example of how important a good story is. The Britannic and Olympic were the same as the Titanic, but Titanic has such a powerful story tied to it that most people never ever hear about it's triplet sisters. Still, it's a HUGE shame that after Britannic and Titanic sank and Olympic survived EVERYTHING, that it was scrapped. It's a tragedy that ship was tossed away like that.
It was the Great Depression and the trans-Atlantic trade was winding down for these "older" ships. The newer ships at that time (in the 1930s) were faster and more elegant/practical. The Olympic was probably worth more to the White Star Line as scrap than she was as an ocean liner, or siting at a dock somewhere. You can find pieces of her all over the world though as a lot of her furniture and fixtures were sold off before she saw the scrappers torch. I believe the cruise ship Celebrity Millenium has a restaurant onboard that is finished with wood panelling from the Olympic.

Yes probably. Some claim the captain made mistakes, i doubt that. He made decision to run for the beach wich is the most logic thing to do and stopped when it turned out to be wrong. In my opinion he would have made it if he did not need to stop because of the first launches and stop.
I watched the real time sinking and in my mind, she looked pretty stable, until the engines restarted, when the bow was a bit over water. Probably she would have sunk anyways but she got pretty instable and it could have saved time. Thanks for the video
@@manuelhuber194 captain did what he thought bestin the crisis. He was probably un aware of all the open portholes. Thise caused a massive amount of water rushing in. It was all a matter of unfortunate events.

IMO I believe not much would change except for the amount of people onboard saved, seeing she had more lifeboats. The sinking would last longer seeing the bulkheads had been moved, because the Titanic didn’t have such a list. Thats my beliefs, I have no proffesional knowledge about the ships.
@@svuntekarlberg In a previous video it was mentioned that having a coal bunker fire actually partially helped keep Titanic afloat for much longer due to the ships crew having moved the coal to the opposite side, therefor keeping the Titanic stable while she sank instead of listing.
It would of stayed afloat and not sunk. Brittanics improvements allowed for 6 compartments flooded Titanic had 5 so the bow would of dipped down a bit but wouldn't of sunk.
My guess would be that the titanic would eventually sink, but it would take here much longer to do so, with the extra lifeboats and gantry davits everyone could have been evacuated and the carpathia may have shown up with time to give aid.
Wow....look at those numbers compared to the Titanic's death toll, and in less than half the time it took to sink. White Star does deserve credit for updating safety so much that had this been the same sinking situation as Titanic, almost no lives would have been lost. That's kind of incredible.
The improvements made to the Britannic's design after the sinking of the Titanic makes me wonder, what would have happened if the ships had traded sinking scenarios. In other words, what would have happened to the Titanic if she had struck a mine, and what would have happened to the Britannic if she had struck an iceberg?
So, scenario: Titanic strikes a mine in a warm, shallow sea... then few people would've died, not 1,500 Britannic hits an iceberg in the North Atlantic, many many succumb to hypothermia... Then, logically put the Britannic would've received the fame - it would be the other way around, HMHS Britannic is more famous today, Titanic gets no credit, goes crying in the corner... * Meanwhile, RMS Olympic, enjoying a vacation in the Irish coast before the scrapping.
@@danieldoo1821 actually due to Britannic being refitted to survive more compartments flooding, if Britannic hit the iceberg even the exact same way it would've been crippled but the ship would've been able to limp to port. Titanic would've had its B Royally F'd by the mine that Rocked Britannic. Weirdly enough Olympic probably wouldve shrugged off both like "What is there something on my face? Is my hair messed up or something?" This of course uses both Titanic and Britannic, respectively as exactly how they were structurally and mechanically the days they sank.

Thanks for this video Sam. I’ve been a big Titanic fan since I was 6 years old, and a Britannic fan since I was 7 and a half. Even when I was 7-8 my peers would have no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned Britannic and how it was the sister ship of the Titanic , but would know about the Titanic. Just one thing to mention is that right before Britannic struck the mine there was a crew change in which the watertight doors were to be opened for several minutes to allow engineering staff to easily walk from certain places of the ship to the other. Then Britannic struck the mine with all the watertight doors open, which allowed water to flood into the first 4 compartments. Afterwards the crew shut the watertight doors but as you stated the watertight door between Boiler Room 5 and 6 warped so it didn’t close. If the crew change happened earlier, if the hull didn’t warp, or if those portholes on the lower decks were closed, Britannic likely would have made it to Kea. Things just happened at the absolute worst time for them.
My great-great grandfather was a stoker on board the Britannic, & he was injured in an accident on-board. Sent back to his Army base to convalesce, that is probably the reason I exist. Great video!
Britannic was on her way to the Dardanelles to pick up wounded soldiers from Gallilopi. It was a good thing she sank before picking up those wounded men, because they would have all died below decks, turning Brittanic into a tomb. The only souls lost were those in the lifeboats that launched before the engines were shut down and were pulled into the propellers. It's amazing how well preserved Britannic is compared to Titanic, she is for the most part in one piece other than the bow. Rusticles have not destroyed much of her steel plates like Titanic, and all of the ship lies in a small area.
Thank you for making this video. I didn’t know that the captain tried those engines twice in order to try to beach it and I always wondered how the whole bow of the ship basically broke off. This is super cool to learn all of this!
There were a couple of people who survived the wrecks of all three of the sister ships. Sometime in the future, you need to do a story on them. They are fascinating.
Olympic didn't wreck, it just had a major collision (actually quite a few, including intentionally ramming and sinking a submarine). It's unfortunate that the ones that wrecked are better preserved then the one that lasted long enough to be scrapped during the depression.
I mean, credit where it's due! Only losing 30 people out of over 1,000 is phenomenal, especially when the majority of those 30 came from people who defied Captain's orders and essentially got themselves killed unnecessarily. The quick decision making on trying to beach the ship wasn't half bad either.
It's chilling to think that this could have been so much worse- imagine if this had happened when they were on their way back from Gallipoli, the ship filled with wounded who may not be able to evacuate themselves... It's awful that anyone died but it's amazing that so few did.
Why does the Titanic look and feel so much grander than any other ship, even the much larger ones of today? There is a romance and majesty about it that seems unique

The Olympic was the unsinkable. My favorite of the three sisters. Even when sent to a scrap she went under her own propultion. I wish they spared her. Imagine the fame she would have today. Titanic will dissapear completely in less than 15 years. I wonder if they can salvage the Britanic.

I hope he does this ship (Bismarck) another ship's first time at sea with tragic consequences. It's one ship despite being over 15,000ft (much deeper than Titanic) deep and having nearly 3,000 shells fired at it that is absolute remarkable condition and sitting upright leading to prove it was scuttled by its crew. The captain , ( Otto Ernst Lindemann ) opting to go down with his ship. Incredible piece of history.

Weren't other watertight doors also open due to a crew change. I also heard that the latest findings on the wreck find the open portholes didn't play as big as role as was first thought.

Anything on the _Britannic_ is amazing to watch. Those gantry davits, despite what people say about them, are really cool. Something not brought up was that, if a funnel wasn't blocking a gantry davit, it could theoretically pick up a lifeboat from the other side of the ship. It's a shame the only other ships that used them (As far as I'm aware) were the RMS _Arundel Castle_ and the RMS _Windsor Castle._ The only major error made in this video is justified, as it is a common mistake: Captain Bartlett did not know of the lifeboats getting sucked into the propellers, and only coincidentally stopped the ship, according to his testimony, when water began flooding Boiler Rooms 5 and 6. A more minor detail, which, admittedly, is nitpicking, is that Captain Bartlett and Assistant Commander Dyke didn't so much as leap overboard, so much as they walked off the ship as she sank out from under them. I leave you with this quote, which summarizes a more personal reason why Captain Bartlett tried so hard to save his ship: _"I had supervised over the construction and launch of the_ Britannic. _I skippered her. And I watched her founder. To have been able to witness a vessel her whole life, from birth to death, is surely a unique circumstance."_ -Captain Charles Bartlett, HMHS _Britannic,_ 21st of November, 1916.

The Britannic was a tragedy of coincidences. Everything that could have been done right had already been done. The ship was designed to save itself from the same situation that killed her sister, but that wasn't the situation it found itself in. And the captain did everything he could to save lives, the only questionable decision on his part was to restart the engines, though his intentions were good. But no lives were lost on account of incompetent design or the Captain's decisions, unlike the Titanic. The lives that were lost were tragic coincidences that nobody could have anticipated

Newer knew anything about the rudder been damaged, or wires of communication collapsed after that mine explosion. Or even about captain's orders about several tries to put the engines back on and then off in order to save the ship. Thanks for this incredible info, Sam! no, atcually all the three Olympic-class ships' rudder were not small if you compare them to the other giant ocean liners in their time, like RMS Mauretania, RMS Aquitania. Titanic's rudder was pretty big

Have you considered doing a video on the Berengaria (Cunard), Majestic (White Star) and Leviathan (US Line). These were requisitioned German liners. It is a shame they were scrapped in the 1930s since they would have been of great use during WW2 in carrying troops across the oceans fast. Another topic - Normandie and the United States looking forlorn in Philadelphia.

Olympic was the least refined because she was the first one. She was the one who got to sail off into the sunset.

You can find pieces of her all over the world though as a lot of her furniture and fixtures were sold off before she saw the scrappers torch. I believe the cruise ship Celebrity Millenium has a restaurant onboard that is finished with wood panelling from the Olympic.
Especially considering that she also rammed and sank a U-Boat.

Some claim the captain made mistakes, i doubt that. He made decision to run for the beach wich is the most logic thing to do and stopped when it turned out to be wrong.

I watched the real time sinking and in my mind, she looked pretty stable, until the engines restarted, when the bow was a bit over water. Probably she would have sunk anyways but she got pretty instable and it could have saved time. Thanks for the video

Video Idea: How would the Titanic sinking have gone if it had been equipped with the improvements they made to Britannic?
IMO I believe not much would change except for the amount of people onboard saved, seeing she had more lifeboats. The sinking would last longer seeing the bulkheads had been moved, because the Titanic didn’t have such a list. Thats my beliefs, I have no proffesional knowledge about the ships.
Given why the improvements occurred the end result would be she wouldn't sink obviously
@@svuntekarlberg In a previous video it was mentioned that having a coal bunker fire actually partially helped keep Titanic afloat for much longer due to the ships crew having moved the coal to the opposite side, therefor keeping the Titanic stable while she sank instead of listing.
It would of stayed afloat and not sunk. Brittanics improvements allowed for 6 compartments flooded Titanic had 5 so the bow would of dipped down a bit but wouldn't of sunk.
My guess would be that the titanic would eventually sink, but it would take here much longer to do so, with the extra lifeboats and gantry davits everyone could have been evacuated and the carpathia may have shown up with time to give aid.
Wow....look at those numbers compared to the Titanic's death toll, and in less than half the time it took to sink.
White Star does deserve credit for updating safety so much that had this been the same sinking situation as Titanic, almost no lives would have been lost.

The improvements made to the Britannic's design after the sinking of the Titanic makes me wonder, what would have happened if the ships had traded sinking scenarios. In other words, what would have happened to the Titanic if she had struck a mine, and what would have happened to the Britannic if she had struck an iceberg?
So, scenario:
Titanic strikes a mine in a warm, shallow sea... then few people would've died, not 1,500
Britannic hits an iceberg in the North Atlantic, many many succumb to hypothermia...
Then, logically put the Britannic would've received the fame - it would be the other way around, HMHS Britannic is more famous today, Titanic gets no credit, goes crying in the corner...
* Meanwhile, RMS Olympic, enjoying a vacation in the Irish coast before the scrapping.
@@danieldoo1821 actually due to Britannic being refitted to survive more compartments flooding, if Britannic hit the iceberg even the exact same way it would've been crippled but the ship would've been able to limp to port. Titanic would've had its B Royally F'd by the mine that Rocked Britannic. Weirdly enough Olympic probably wouldve shrugged off both like "What is there something on my face? Is my hair messed up or something?"
This of course uses both Titanic and Britannic, respectively as exactly how they were structurally and mechanically the days they sank.

Thanks for this video Sam. I’ve been a big Titanic fan since I was 6 years old, and a Britannic fan since I was 7 and a half. Even when I was 7-8 my peers would have no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned Britannic and how it was the sister ship of the Titanic , but would know about the Titanic.
Just one thing to mention is that right before Britannic struck the mine there was a crew change in which the watertight doors were to be opened for several minutes to allow engineering staff to easily walk from certain places of the ship to the other. Then Britannic struck the mine with all the watertight doors open, which allowed water to flood into the first 4 compartments. Afterwards the crew shut the watertight doors but as you stated the watertight door between Boiler Room 5 and 6 warped so it didn’t close.
If the crew change happened earlier, if the hull didn’t warp, or if those portholes on the lower decks were closed, Britannic likely would have made it to Kea.
Things just happened at the absolute worst time for them.

My great-great grandfather was a stoker on board the Britannic, & he was injured in an accident on-board. Sent back to his Army base to convalesce, that is probably the reason I exist. Great video!

Britannic was on her way to the Dardanelles to pick up wounded soldiers from Gallilopi. It was a good thing she sank before picking up those wounded men, because they would have all died below decks, turning Brittanic into a tomb. The only souls lost were those in the lifeboats that launched before the engines were shut down and were pulled into the propellers. It's amazing how well preserved Britannic is compared to Titanic, she is for the most part in one piece other than the bow. Rusticles have not destroyed much of her steel plates like Titanic, and all of the ship lies in a small area.
Thank you for making this video. I didn’t know that the captain tried those engines twice in order to try to beach it and I always wondered how the whole bow of the ship basically broke off. This is super cool to learn all of this!
Without a doubt the best concise explanation of the wreck of the Britannic i've come across.
There were a couple of people who survived the wrecks of all three of the sister ships. Sometime in the future, you need to do a story on them. They are fascinating.
Olympic didn't wreck, it just had a major collision (actually quite a few, including intentionally ramming and sinking a submarine). It's unfortunate that the ones that wrecked are better preserved then the one that lasted long enough to be scrapped during the depression.
I mean, credit where it's due! Only losing 30 people out of over 1,000 is phenomenal, especially when the majority of those 30 came from people who defied Captain's orders and essentially got themselves killed unnecessarily. The quick decision making on trying to beach the ship wasn't half bad either.
It's chilling to think that this could have been so much worse- imagine if this had happened when they were on their way back from Gallipoli, the ship filled with wounded who may not be able to evacuate themselves... It's awful that anyone died but it's amazing that so few did.
You should cover the Empress of Ireland too. Because it happened in 1914, it is often a forgotten tragedy!

The Olympic was the unsinkable. My favorite of the three sisters. Even when sent to a scrap she went under her own propultion. I wish they spared her. Imagine the fame she would have today. Titanic will dissapear completely in less than 15 years. I wonder if they can salvage the Britanic.

It's one ship despite being over 15,000ft (much deeper than Titanic) deep and having nearly 3,000 shells fired at it that is absolute remarkable condition and sitting upright leading to prove it was scuttled by its crew.

Anything on the _Britannic_ is amazing to watch. Those gantry davits, despite what people say about them, are really cool. Something not brought up was that, if a funnel wasn't blocking a gantry davit, it could theoretically pick up a lifeboat from the other side of the ship. It's a shame the only other ships that used them (As far as I'm aware) were the RMS _Arundel Castle_ and the RMS _Windsor Castle._
The only major error made in this video is justified, as it is a common mistake: Captain Bartlett did not know of the lifeboats getting sucked into the propellers, and only coincidentally stopped the ship, according to his testimony, when water began flooding Boiler Rooms 5 and 6. A more minor detail, which, admittedly, is nitpicking, is that Captain Bartlett and Assistant Commander Dyke didn't so much as leap overboard, so much as they walked off the ship as she sank out from under them.
I leave you with this quote, which summarizes a more personal reason why Captain Bartlett tried so hard to save his ship:
_"I had supervised over the construction and launch of the_ Britannic. _I skippered her. And I watched her founder. To have been able to witness a vessel her whole life, from birth to death, is surely a unique circumstance."_

The Britannic was a tragedy of coincidences. Everything that could have been done right had already been done. The ship was designed to save itself from the same situation that killed her sister, but that wasn't the situation it found itself in. And the captain did everything he could to save lives, the only questionable decision on his part was to restart the engines, though his intentions were good. But no lives were lost on account of incompetent design or the Captain's decisions, unlike the Titanic. The lives that were lost were tragic coincidences that nobody could have anticipated

Olympic-class ships' rudder were not small if you compare them to the other giant ocean liners in their time, like RMS Mauretania, RMS Aquitania. Titanic's rudder was pretty big

Have you considered doing a video on the Berengaria (Cunard), Majestic (White Star) and Leviathan (US Line). These were requisitioned German liners. It is a shame they were scrapped in the 1930s since they would have been of great use during WW2 in carrying troops across the oceans fast. Another topic - Normandie and the United States looking forlorn in Philadelphia.
