    Thanks Paul, I’ve looked at loads of those forum’s...useless...! You and Scotty are the only ones giving this advice to check and clean Mass Airflow Sensor for poor acceleration...what I call a flat spot...! Cleaned the MAP sensor on my daughters 2009 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Sxi and it as done the trick. I cleaned it with WD40 Contact Cleaner which worked but, it didn’t evaporate...I had to run the hairdryer through it to dry it out. The sensor on this one has only two contacts and does not appear to be removable from the air filter hose...you can see it though from the filter end though and reach it with the tube. Hope this is useful to other people searching the internet for idea’s. By the way, it also seems to have fixed the Rev lag when changing gear, something that I saw on one forum as “perfectly normal on Astra’s”. Thanks Paul

    Thank you for the long list of what could possibly cause engine performnce issues. Lot of people think fixing or replacing a part or two can fix the issues but it's not always the case. That's why the problem must be diagnosed rather than blindly throwing parts at it. So many components and sensors work together to send the accurate amount of data to the ECM, so that the ECM can send the right ratio of fuel to gain the maximum cobustion output. Any diffiencey can disrupt the proper combustion process causing performance issues overtime.
    Engineers have spends decades to come up with a product that we now take it for granted. It's not a horse or a bike. This is a product of science not a miracle.

      If you are still having the problem, list the details. I can't make any promises, but at the very least, I should be able to show you how to eliminate 95%+ of the issues on his list.

      Exactly. If you watch enough UA-cam instructional videos and make the time to practice what you watch, then you will one day hear someone call you a "D-I-Y GUY".
      Never give up in the beginning. There were times I would have videos playing at night in the background as I slept. Wake up to an answer I heard in my sleep.

    Good and thorough. I had no idea there could be this many causes. But they mostly make sense. The water in fuel seems unlikely to just be affected during acceleration, but I'm just an apprentice.

    • @LincolnGTX
      @LincolnGTX 6 років тому

      Believe it or not, where I live, water in fuel is a common issue which affects the entire engine badly. Paul did this thoroughly, like all of his videos, helped me few months ago with a problem which a few mechanics failed to determine so I did it myself.

    The MAF sensor is 90% of the time the reason...
    New one would help but cleaning the old it won't work...
    I got mine new Bosh Maf for 120€...
    For the hesitation, it might be the air system, fuel system or even the spark plugs... These are the main reasons...
    Thanks for the explanation...

    You forgot to mention the most common intake system component of fuel injected cars. The idle air control valve is what really makes cars hesitate and not start along with stalling.

    • @proclaimliberty2000
      @proclaimliberty2000  5 років тому +12

      I have never associated the idle air control valve with engine hesitation during acceleration but rather irregular idle speed and stalling.

  • @zchettaz
    @zchettaz 3 роки тому +42

    First, if your engine is hesitating, 95% of the time its the spark plugs that are causing it. If you have to diagnose via process of elimination, then it's best to start with the cheapest and easiest things to replace.
    First, an alternator has one job, which is to charge the battery and a faulty alternator will not cause your engine to misfire or a check engine light. This means a battery light is shown on the dash which in-turn tells you that the battery is not being recharged.
    Second, I can't even be bothered listing all the things that you've listed that's irrelevant.

    • @yungfresh2defe

      Very true hesitation is most likely spark and bad ⛽

      im sooooo mad i changed like 5 parts on my car and still stalling i think it the spark plugs

    • @zchettaz
      @zchettaz 2 роки тому

      @Adrian Vac that shouldnt be possible considering that leads have a jacket that covers the top half of the plug and the other half is inside the motor. Plus the alternator shouldn't be close enough for a magnetic field to have an effect. The only way this would occur is if a damaged lead was basically resting on it.
      The voltage that's sent to the spark plugs from the battery will always be the same, regardless if the alternator is charging the battery or not because that signal is controlled by the ecu. If it is an intermittent fault that doesn't cause the voltage to drop low enough to warrant the ecu to throw a battery light up on the dash then it's likely a bad ground wire or a faulty voltage regulator that most of the time is caused by heat exposure from the motor.
      Anyway, I'm getting off topic, point is that it shouldn't be possible for a magnetic field to effect spark. What suburb was it? As in, what motor? I'm curious to see a diagram of it..

    For a diesel engine:
    Blanking off the EGR was the fix on my diesel.
    The exhaust gas was screwing up the fuel mixture and causing a very very bad hesitation and a big puff of black smoke out the exhaust when trying to take off from a stand still. The ECU was not compensating for this and that hesitation was becoming dangerous. The blank plate was the only way to fix this problem.
    How can an engine be Euro 5 compliant when that happens? Maybe the testing for this is compliance is suspect?
    Until Foton/Cummins come up with an ECU update to compensate for this the blank plate is staying in place in my car!!!

    My Ford Escape 2.3L AT also "hesitates"when I would suddenly overtake but I mainly associated the issue with transmission gear dropping from overdrive to lower gear for more acceleration. So whenever I'm in a hurry and would overtake a lot, I just disable the overdrive for much better acceleration.
