    I just finished reading "Fingers Crossed," which is the rock memoir by Miki Berenyi, who was the frontwoman for an alternative rock band called Lush during the 1990s. It was the best book that I've ever read about music, and that includes the ones I've read by well-respected rock critics like Lester Bangs and Jim DeRogatis. Regarding what it was like being in a band during that period, she did an outstanding job of speaking truth about working with record label executives, management, producers, concert venue staff, radio stations, and others around the music business who, sadly, were really driven much more by making a buck rather than doing what was in the artists' best interests. Additionally, the insight that she offered into how tension manifests itself in the studio when you're working on an album and your band has multiple songwriters really enabled me to gain a lot more respect for what takes not only to achieve success as a band, but to stay motivated to keep working together even when the wheels come off. Miki is able to speak freely about what she and a lot of other rock artists experienced because she doesn't have a horse in the race anymore. If you have any interest in understanding what it's really like being in a rock band, this one is highly recommended, and it's given me newfound respect not just for Lush, but for all of the artists that I like.

    "In medias res necessitates flashbacks, which strike me as boring and sort of corny. They always make me think of those movies from the forties and fifties where the picture gets all swimmy, the voices get all echoey, and suddenly it's sixteen months ago... but I like to start at square one... I'm an A-to-Z man; serve me the appetizer first and give me dessert if I eat my veggies." -- Stephen King, On Writing

    I finished Stephen King’s It last month (my book of the month), it was an adventure and I finally figured out what the “turtle” was 😅 I was so confused I thought it was typos I refused to look it up but it was driving me crazy, for such a long book I honestly felt like I could have read another thousand pages and still wanted more.
    Reading Harry Potter for the first time this month just finishing up Goblet of Fire, I’ve listen to the audio books and of course the movies but my first read of the series. Needed a break from the heavy stuff, looking forward to getting into The Last War Trilogy next.

    I also dropped the Vanished Birds last week. I really enjoyed the first chapter but it didn’t hold up for me in the following chapters. I usually alternate between SFF and history but I was in the middle of a MLK jr read thru (finished Stride toward Freedom before starting Vanished Birds and now reading Why We Can’t Wait) so maybe I was not in the right mood for some SF. I’m looking forward to the book club video with your book tube pals and maybe I’ll try Vanished Birds again at a later date.

    I'm so sad, I was slow to begin with Fire & blood, meaning now I have to speed read it before I even at all begin on the series, so I might be a week or so late, but at least it is weekly episodes so I will be able to catch up. I've always heard some debate on the right to left thing on Manga. Some people say they should never reverse the images; although, I doubt those individuals are reading it in the original Japanese. Others say if they're translating it and substituting cultural references for something more familiar, why not mirror image the art to read left to right? What is your opinion on that?

    • @Gruso57
      @Gruso57 18 днів тому +3

      In the same way manga remains black and white, reading to their orientation holds up the culture without losing many readers. Translating a manga doesn't sacrifice culture, if anything, it makes it more available. The whole left to right debate is from those who are habitually lazy. It doesn't take long to get used to.

    • @Tim_with_Tomes_and_Tales
      @Tim_with_Tomes_and_Tales 18 днів тому

      @Gruso57 Thank you for your thoughts. However, I have read several Mangas where they did change a Japanese reference that would not have been understood by a foreign audience, like changing the name of a pop star reference or how Characters mention that the subtle changes in a Japanese character can change a specific word. That would not work with English speakers. Then, there are idioms that are often quite unique to their region of origin. So, these translations are not directly word for word the whole time. I'm not saying these changes are right or wrong, just that they change more things than just the language used. Is that lazy, or does it help non-Japanese understand better? Again, it makes no difference to me, but there are pros and cons to both.

    Nice to see you back man. Hopefully this week’s reading is a tad more promising than the last. At least you had One Piece to fall back on. I have flipped through some volumes and while I don’t think it’s for me I can see why people enjoy it so much. I completed volumes 13 and 14 of demon slayer this week. I’m sorry to have finished the Pleasure District Arc as that absolutely cracked me up but this next one looks promising.
    Other than that, I completed reading Eiji Yoshikawa’s The Heike Story. This was my first book by this author, though I have read several volumes of Vagabond which is based on his novel Musashi. Enjoyed it tremendously and am looking forward to attempting the original version, as well as Eiji’s other books. If you’re looking for something Japanese after reading Shogun, this author may be of interest.
    I also began Sailing to Sarantium this week by GGK. Under Heaven was my book of the year last year but I have tried three other books of Kay’s since then and didn’t like them nearly as much as Under Heaven. Now….I’m 50 pages into Sailing to Sarantium and I can say this is going to be a contender for top ten of the year. Finally. I can already sense it. I am very subtly hinting that you should give it a try.
    Happy Reading!
