It is extremely refreshing to find a book channel that doesn't recommend the same books over and over and over again. Your tastes are very much aligned with my own, so I'm glad to start reading various titles I've yet to try. Keep up the great content!
I'm currently in the last 100 pages of Pet Sematary, based on your previous recommendation, and I am absolutely loving it. I'm also the father of two young children, and you're right. There have been a few moments in this book that have hit HARD. Like punch to the gut hard that forced me to tear my eyes from the page and just stare at the ceiling for a while. King is a bastard, a masterful bastard.
Lonesome Dove was one that was so good that I refused to finish it. It took me over a year to read it because I was so busy with school but felt so compelled to keep going the entire time. Worth every page. Also got me out of a reading slump surprisingly, but man, the themes of camaraderie, friendship, loneliness and being stuck in a changing world are SO good.
You popped up on my recommended watches and I don't think I've ever clicked SUB on a channel faster than I just did. You remind me of my close friends when we just shoot the shit about books, music, coffee, whatever. Thanks for this channel and I look forward to future videos!!
I just found your channel and immediately subscribed! Watching you talk about books feels like having a conversation with a friend, you have such a dynamic way of describing books that makes me want to read every one you recommend 😄
Lonesome Dove is a book you can live in. Larry McMurtry is amazing, all of his books are excellent. When I started reading Into the Wild I did not think much of Alexander but wound up crying at the end. He kinda grew on me. He was a pure soul. Pet Cemetary is weird, scary, sad, I can't say I loved it but I also couldn't put it down. I am not a big Stephen King fan, I find most of his writing just gory or so long winded I can't deal with it, but he did manage to make this a haunting story. I prefer The Shining, which I think is very well written and creates, to me, a spookier atmosphere, getting inside the mind of a man going through a psychotic breakdown.
I love your videos so much - you have such a great vibe as a person. Can't agree more with Pet Semetary.. it's a book I thought I'd never get into, but picked it up and it's so much more than "horror" or "creepy", absolutely fantastic
Thank you! And yeah, totally agree with that. Pet Sematary does come across as a corny horror slasher flick of some kind but it has SO much heart. I love it so much.
I think Stephen King has been done a great disservice over the years as being touted a "master of horror". YES, he is a masterful writer, but Pet Sematary is one example of his books that I wouldn't call a "horror" book necessarily at all. For me, this book has creepy moments, but is mostly an exploration of grief, relationships, community and folklore. I think if he hadn't been given the reputation of being a horror writer, more people would pick up his books. (Not that he needs more popularity, just saying.) lol... My personal favourite of his is Cujo, which has a LOT more going on than just a rabid dog. I appreciate your wide variety of recs, and I also enjoyed the Krakauer book. Awesome.
I think he’s a master of writing suspense more so than horror. 100% agree with this and I do think a lot more people would read his books if he was more commonly seen as this rather than horror.
I've been saying this for years! He's my favorite author but I wouldn't consider his books horror at all other than maybe a couple. They definitely have spooky or creepy themes but they aren't in your face scary.
Thank ya! Lonesome Dove is just one of those books that you are thinking about any time you aren't reading it. It feels like jumping back into an adventure with your pals when you dive back in.
I love your recommendations!!! Definitely going to try Pet Sematary. I’ve never been a big reader throughout my life either, but in my mid-30s, I’m trying to dive in. Thanks for your authenticity and awesome recommendations
Into The Wild was my 3rd book this year and man I forgot how great it is. The research and interviews and letters he got ahold of to write it….so well done
I have never met anyone, male or female that did not think Lonesome Dove was amazing. Great recommendations. The Green Mile also an excellent Stephen King starter.
OK, Lonesome Dove will be one of my reads for 2024. You've convinced me. I have read Into the Wild and Pet Cemetery . I haven't watched all your videos so maybe I missed something, but why is your title of your channel, Booksaresick? I'm glad I finally clicked on it!
Read both Small Things Like These and Foster the past week+ based on your recommendation, and I’ve found a new love in Claire Keegan. I just finished Foster this afternoon and it’s going to take a while to heal from that one. So, so beautiful. It’s also just been so great seeing you do these longer form videos! I always look forward to a new upload! 💗
I got this channel randomly recommended to me and I really enjoy hearing about what you're reading and also the book recs! It's helped me get into more consistent reading which has always been a challenge (I either start too many books or binge half of one and then forget about it for weeks). I wonder if you might like some of John McPhee's writing. He was rec'ed to me by a professor of mine while I was writing creative nonfiction in grad school. I read his book The Pine Barrens and it reminded me a bit of Into The Wild, but more naturalistic, since it's about the geography and history of the region and its people, and not so much a tragedy like Alexander Supertramp. His writing is immersive like Tom Wolfe or Hunter S Thompson but without all the drugs and psychedelics lol.
Salem's Lot is my favourite Stephen King book. Well written and very scary/atmospheric. Another very good book is Intensity by Dean Koontz. It is what it says it is - heart thumpingly intense.
I have had The Fisherman on my shelves for too long! Not that you asked at all - haha!... - Five of my favorite standalone books of all time that I think YOU should read are Persuasion by Jane Austen, The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez, Ledfeather by Stephen Graham Jones, Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh, and Augustus by John Williams. - Five of my favorite books as start of series that I think YOU should read are The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb, The Black Company by Glen Cook, City of Last Chances by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and Dune by Frank Herbert. - Five of my favoirite collections or anthologies that I think YOU should read are Sacraments for the Unfit by Sarah Tolmie, The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu, Never Whistle at Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology, Ten Planets by Yuri Herrera, and Things We Lost in the Fire by Mariana Enriquez.
listened to the audiobook of i’m glad my mom died a year ago and still think about it all the time if you want to get more into memoirs i suggest finding me by viola davis and educated by tara westover
Pet Semetary was my first SK book and will forever be the horror novel I compare other similar books to. Beyond it's genre, it is just a brilliant piece on grief and life
It was one of my first as well and I had no idea what to expect. I thought it might be a fun/corny ride but was completely unprepared for the level of despair and human pain that it gave me
I’ve read 3 of these 5 books. I’m Glad My Mom Died, Pet Semetary, and Into the Wild. All fantastic books! I don’t think Pet Semetary is Kings best book, but it is top 3! I don’t have kids, so maybe that’s why it didn’t resonate with me as much, but I loved it because of the slight lore of a Wendigo, who can manipulate psychologically damaged people, the relationship with his wife and the neighbors, it felt so real. That’s why IT by Stephen King is my all time favorite book. He can write children and relationships so well you forget they aren’t real. Christ, I felt like I was friends with the entire losers club halfway through the book. “And someone helped him (Bill), Beverly maybe, or maybe Ben… and for that long while, the darkness was kind” (paraphrased). Man I held him too! I was feeling that, I teared up reading about the anguish of him being tortured by his brothers death all throughout his life, defeating that burden, and then crumbling into a vulnerable, but relieved state of being while his friends surrounded him with love just encapsulated childhood and friendship. It was incredible.
I read Pet Sematary via audiobook, and while Michael C Hall did a fabulous job, I just find that I understand books and stories so much better when I am reading them in physical form. I need to re-read that one. I also read I’m Glad My Mom Died… but I haven’t read the rest! Definitely will this year!
I find that too sometimes! I've only done a few audiobooks but I'd say 50% I could follow just as easily as reading and the other 50% I was getting lost every 5-10 minutes. Weird how that is lol.
I have read the Jeannette McCurdey book and enjoyed it. I have read several Stephen King books however I never read Pet Cemetery. It looks so scary to me.
I have only read a couple of Stephen King books, but I like to recommend The Long Walk. It's probably considered a novella so its not a huge commitment.. It will stay with you forever though.
Is the english in Lonesome Dove difficult? Because I can't find it anywhere in German and there are some books (like hunger games) that I can read in english without a problem and with books like A Little Life it gets a bit exhausting.
Listen, I know that this comes out of left field, I love you selection, but Id like to add one that you should read: The Ophidian by Daryl Mckenzie. Really.
I grew up watching iCarly and other Nickelodeon shows, so immediately bought Im Glad My Mom Died, and read and found it very enlightening and have recommended it to a lot of my friends who grew up watching them!
Big yes to Lonesome Dove. A wonderful, immersive and transportive masterpiece.

simple story but hits hard
It makes me happy that you included my most favorite book ever in your list i.e. Lonesome Dove. It just doesn’t get any better.
You are my new favorite book reviewer. I will be checking out all recommendations here on out. Keep it up man!

Love to hear that! Thanks pals!
Lonesome Dove is in my top 5 of all time. It’s magical. Loving your channel! 😊
You had me at 1000 Page Western Epic! I love me some long books. I get to spend more time with them!🤗
I do love big books but I can’t lie, I was pretty intimidated by it. It is so so so worth it though!

Yep I couldn’t agree more with this! Most of his books aren’t really horror at all so it’s always odd to see them in the horror section.

Okay, now I’m intrigued by that 1000 page book!😅 Btw, loving the recent videos. Look forward to seeing your books

Lonesome dove! Everyone loving that! I’ll hafts add it to my list this year!
Lonesome Dove…. Without a doubt! So envious of those that get to read it for the first time.
As am I - haha! I haven't "re-read" any books yet but that might be the first
Me too. It's just everything a novel should be.
I love your recommendations!!! Definitely going to try Pet Sematary. I’ve never been a big reader throughout my life either, but in my mid-30s, I’m trying to dive in. Thanks for your authenticity and awesome recommendations

Really enjoying the content! I'm so happy to hear someone else sharing how amazing Lonesome Dove! I'm excited to give Fisherman a go!
picked up claire keegan because of you and LOVED both foster and small things like these! can’t wait to read more
I have never met anyone, male or female that did not think Lonesome Dove was amazing. Great recommendations. The Green Mile also an excellent Stephen King starter.

Sematary?
Stoked to find your page man, have added a few of these to my list! Also your fits are also sick, wardrobe tour? Haha.
Ha! Thank you! Wardrobe is 90% thrifted and gross. Love it.

I've read both recently, so beautiful indeed, I'm planning on reading her "So Late in the Day" next, a very short one though
I'm so glad! Claire Keegan is just something else. Love her.
I just bought Lonesome Dove! I've been thinking about reading it for a while and I think this is the year.

I love John Krakaur! His book Into Thin Air is really good too😊
Everything you said about Lonesome Dove - YES!
Lonesome dove is a reread for me 3rd book in the series. Love it!
Man, you're producing a lot of content good stuff
Thanks pal haha! I'm kind of in my "off season" right now so I have a lot of free time...
I literally picked up Lonesome Dove a few months ago bc of your recommendation on TikTok, hopefully I get to it this year 😎
I’ve been trying to find a well loved version of lonesome dove! But can’t seem to find. Might need to buy it new
Pet Semetary was my first SK book and will forever be the horror novel I compare other similar books to. Beyond it's genre, it is just a brilliant piece on grief and life
It was one of my first as well and I had no idea what to expect. I thought it might be a fun/corny ride but was completely unprepared for the level of despair and human pain that it gave me
It’s the third time this week I hear about Lonesome Dove… I’m also a huge red dead redemption fan… maybe this is a sign to pick it up!
I’ve read 3 of these 5 books. I’m Glad My Mom Died, Pet Semetary, and Into the Wild. All fantastic books! I don’t think Pet Semetary is Kings best book, but it is top 3! Hi, I discovered your channel yesterday and I'm watching all the videos! I love the reviews!
Do you have goodreads? I'd love to follow you there
I read Pet Sematary via audiobook, and while Michael C Hall did a fabulous job, I just find that I understand books and stories so much better when I am reading them in physical form. I need to re-read that one. I also read I’m Glad My Mom Died… but I haven’t read the rest! Definitely will this year!

I’m finishing Empire of Silence, then it’s on to Swan Song, then it’s Lonesome Dove.
That sounds like a lovely 1, 2, 3 punch
Swan Song - McCammon?
I have read the Jeannette McCurdey book and enjoyed it. I have read several Stephen King books however I never read Pet Cemetery. It looks so scary to me.
I have only read a couple of Stephen King books, but I like to recommend The Long Walk. It's probably considered a novella so its not a huge commitment.. It will stay with you forever though.
I read so many books that a lot of times I’ll remember loving some, but not remembering a whole lot about it. The Long Walk won’t leave my memory!
King is also one of my favorite writers. 📖📚
I absolutely loved Pet Sematary by Stephen King. One of my favorite books!
Well. Lonesome Dove is now on my "want to read" list....Never wouldda predicted that.
Im so excited for you lol. I hope you love it!
Is the english in Lonesome Dove difficult? Because I can't find it anywhere in German and there are some books (like hunger games) that I can read in english without a problem and with books like A Little Life it gets a bit exhausting.
I also loved "I'm Glad My Mom Died". The best memoir I have read, so far. 5/5!
Lonesome Dove is an IYKYK
I got lonesome dove i have to start it.. also found out its a 4 book series
Wow zach galafanakis has a channel where is reviews and recommends books... Perfect
I'm a little more than half way through Lonesome Dove. ❤
Two Words. Lonesome Dove.
"this book is not very long, I read it in about 3 hours"
That's a 300 page book, dude. How freaking fast do you read?!
Pet Sematary is my No.1 recommendation for everyone!
yess
