I grew up in Richmond..I had a lot of memories on the front porch of my nanny and pawpaws house on Oregon Hill. The front porch..the Original Social Media outlet. We all talked to each other as they walked by.
I'm at the end of a court street so I have a large pie shaped lot. I have a nice small 10x12 foot deck off my family room that my wife and I use for hanging out in the evening. It has two chairs and a fire table where we enjoy star gazing. I may decide to expand this deck in the near future adding an additional 5x12 add on to the side. Off my wife's art room we have a much larger 20 x 20 deck used for BBQ and entertaining. My yard is very private surrounded by tall cedars. We love this. Having a front porch is not practical for us and although we have a couple of chairs there, we rarely ever sit out front.
Yeah I guess people have switched to spending time in their back yard. I know we spend a lot of time there ourselves. That's the benefit of the front porch. It's not private but we tend to stay connected to our neighbors and area we live in. Watching the coming and goings, visiting etc. More of a sociable atmosphere than the back. Helps us learn to communicate and get along. We've seemed to have lost that since front porches have slipped form being built. Just thinking a few more front porches might help in the country right now with everybody so polarized. We have a 10x10 at the back door for an evening sit and this 12x12 with the gazebo for cookouts and fire pit on nice nights. Just love it. Thanks. Steve
Saw that on your recent video. Great job. I need to do some work on mine. Replace a few boards. Always something to do just never want to do it. I retired and got even lazier. You believe that? Thanks. Steve
@@stevescorner2702 Well, with the deck I got a bug up my butt because I had a guy years ago quote a composite deck and he literally laughed at me and told me I couldn't afford it. I took it as a challenge and built my own. I try to challenge myself that way too. Sometimes it doesn't work though. Lol
I’ll bet all the kids weren’t sitting on your grandfather’s front porch, nose buried in their phones, texting each other either. Good times. I remember them well. What I wouldn’t give to sit on that porch one more time with my mother and grandmother.
Good times for sure. The back porch/deck is for privacy but the front porch is our window to the world. Neighbors, friends, just cars going by. Socialize, get to know and have fun together. I think we just miss a little something by not having one and using it. Just an older guy reminiscing a little. Take care. Steve

It's just a good memory. Sitting at the Barrel the other night just brought some of them back. Good times. Steve
